I have always been able to perform screen mirroring from my Android phone to Chromecast without WiFi. The initial setup required a second phone, but after that all I had to do was to enable WiFi hotspot in my cell phone, open Chromecast APP and activate screen mirroring. A few days ago Google released a new version of Chromecast APP that checks if WiFi is connected before enabling screen mirroring. This new APP made my setup not work anymore. Does anyone have a solution, other than keeping the APP in the previous version? Thanks in advance!
Anyone? Thanks!
Did you try to activate WLAN on your phone before you turn on your hotspot?

Thanks for your answer. How do I do that?
Hey thorosso, i never had a Chromecast. but I need .
I wanna know if with chromecast I can use my phone as a hotspot , and connect the chromecast it without a third device?
Or if necessary the third device will only make the primary configuration and leave saved or will always need a third device ?
My only function would be to mirror the screen.
I saw the Miracast , but say it is very slow compared to chromecast 2.0.

Yes, you can use it as a Hotspot and mirror your screen simultaneously. First time you will need a second device to setup your chromecast: enable Hotspot in your primary phone and configure chromecast through your second device. That's it! The problem is that after Google updated the chromecast app, it no longer works, because the app disables WiFi before mirroring. So you will have to install previous versions from chromecast app via apk (any version with old icon) and disable auto update.
this is a big ****
The old version will work with a Chromecast 2?
I think are bad idea bought the chromecast 2 because this update.
In old version the changes settings were saved? or i always need a third device to make setup?
I see the problem you saying.. I Installed the New Chromecast app just for see it.
But... you already tried pull up notitications and press Cast Screen option? the Chromecast TV dont show up?
The old app works? Can someone upload the apk? Thanks.

It will only work in the previous version of the Chromecast app (the one I posted the link). First time you will need a second device to setup your chromecast: enable Hotspot in your primary phone (the one you want to do the screen mirroring) and configure chromecast through your second device (open Chromecast app and configure the device to use your first device hotspot connection). Keep your hotspot turned on. Open Chromecast app in your first device and through the menu, select "Cast screen". That's it!
Don't forget to disable the auto update in chromecast app. Good luck!

I've successfully set up my Chromecast with my Gnex hotspot and my Galaxy S 4G, and Netfilx and Google Play Music stream perfectly: however, Youtube and Google Play Movies and TV is tricky: it takes too long to load when it works. I got a Youtube video to work but only once. Tabcasting works but it lags. I think we need a thread that troubleshoots this type of problem, but if I'm wrong, please disregard this thread. If it's needed, please share your experiences here. The screenshots I'm attaching is my current setup (I switch my one sim card between phones): in this case, my Galaxy S 4g is the hotspot, my Gnex is MyPhone, MT6451 is my laptop #1, VPCM11AX is laptop #2, FranciscosiPhone is my iphone, and the Azurewave Tech is (I'm assuming) Chromecast.
Update: gnex as hotspot, s 4g as source with Aircast streams movies from SD card.

May I ask how you managed to get this thing to work? I've tried multiple methods for Wifi tethering using the Galaxy Nexus and all have failed. I have tried Wifi Tether 3.4 and the stock tethering option. The errors include, AP Isolation needing to be turned off, UPnp not configured, and no connection. Once I do eventually get connected, its slow and just kicks off while trying to reload. Are there any additional settings in the wifi tether app that need to be addressed? Any help would be great. Thank you.
No need for apps. I'm running cm10.2 on my gnex and 10.1 on my galaxy s 4g. Try to setup with the chromecast app but don't change the Chromecastxxxx network name. That is one problem. The next problem is "connection failed" due to password. That's fine. Double check your gnex password and try again. If you get try again just press cancel and you'll be set. It's a bit tricky but I've done it several times with both phones. If you get stuck, let me know and I'll post a video or something.
After I pressed cancel, I was set up. The first time I did it, I didn't know I was set up until I noticed the app said "Ready to Cast." Then, after resetting the Chromecast to troubleshoot some problem, I realized that changing the ChromecastXXXX name is the main problem.

Yeah I use my One's hotspot to connect the two as well. Funny my LTE is faster than my router.

Yeah, runs fine. Though, naturally my battery drains quickly.
I've tried this method and it doesn't work for me. Left the chromecast's ID as default, was able to get it to connect, but the Chromecast itself is never recognized by any device. I can refresh or toggle wifi and eventually it will show up as an option in Google Music/Youtube, but then trying to connect to it produces an error message.
I have tried using a Galaxy Note on T-Mobile run tethering and surprise surprise, it works, but because they don't have unlimited data like I do on Verizon, it's not an option at all. Seems like it might be an issue specific to the GNex.

So with this method you used your galaxy s as the hotspot and the gnex to setup the chromecast correct? I don't have a second phone to do that, have you gotten this to work by using the windows chromecast setup app? I can't connect...with or without a password on my hotspot and using 2.4ghz only.
Please explain how you set this up step by step
Currently, I'm using the gnex as a hotspot. I originally used chrome on Ubuntu to set up. Actually, any setup will work. I switched to see what works best and I think the gnex hotspot is more stable. You will, however, need a 2nd phone or computer to setup. Sometimes setup gets a bit tricky and says setup failed but that may not be correct, as I showed in the screenshots.

Thanks, I'll try this out when I get home and see how it fairs.
I tried the 2.4Ghz setting and the Chromecast app doesn't recognize the Chromecast at all. Even though it's set up and connected to the network, the app will detect it as needing to be setup, even though Chromecast displays "Ready to Cast." I really think it has to be related to some Verizon LTE thing because I don't really know why it would instantly work on a T-Mobile Galaxy Note but not for a Verizon Galaxy Nexus. Doesn't really make any sense. I don't think using CM10.1 has anything to do with it either. I also tried CM10.2 with the same results.
OK. If you are "Ready To Cast" and you can't, this is what I found: YouTube, Google movies, and music are "blocked" if you don't have a paid hotspot plan, but Netflix and casting from your computer should work. On my sim, I had about 99gb of data and Google doesn't cast but Netflix and tab casting works. On my wife's sim, the hotspot on her plan is still less than 500mb so I can stream. This is on T-Mobile.

Was trying to show someone wifi direct the other day and as it turns out it didn't want to work.
Went to album, selected a pic, pressed menu and share, scrolled down and there was no option for wifi direct.
I've also read that you have to pair with the device first.
I even tried an app that I used to use called SuperBeam which also didn't work.
Does anyone have this working?
I was attempting to send files to a Note 3, even android beam didn't work.
I don't use this feature all the time but it'd be nice to have a feature working if it's supposed to.
Cheers.
Superbeam works fine for me. 41mbps+ for large single file transfers

for me it's mixed bag. sometimes it works like a charm, just press Throw, shows available devices, chosing one of them send the file to the output (photo, video, music). and sometimes - like after disconnecting and trying to connect again few minutes later - it doesn't work at all.
The point i'm trying to make is why on earth is it on the device if the device doesn't use it? I can't understand why a company would allow a protocol to be included and then not give the ability to use it?
On the vast majority of phone all you do is pick a file and select share, then choose wifi direct and off it goes, no need to be connected to wifi, infact you wouldn't even need a sim card to do it.
Such a stupid thing to happen and a bit awkward when someone with a sammy device is showing off a feature and even though yours has it it doesn't work lol.
I found myself saying "Ok just download this app" Bit long winded isn't it? I mean click share and click wifi direct job done, what gives ?

Can you check whether video (not tab) casting works from YouTube.com?
At least that will help determine if it's a discovery issue.
Also, does your Chromecast have a fixed IP address (via DHCP reservation)?

Interesting, it's like it can find your Chromecast but the control port isn't functioning.
If you haven't gone into your router and set up a Reserved address for your Chromecast, then it does not have a fixed IP. That means when you restart your router or Chromecast, it might get a different IP address.
Speaking of rebooting router and Chromecast, that's the next thing to try.
I did reboot chromecast and the router still no luck.

Interesting. Was probably something on Google's end then. Remember that except for Netflix, Chromecast gets its "apps" like a web browser does, so any changes can make/break functionality in a "live" manner.
Up until the most recent update, I have been able to share my screen to my Chromecast and then open NFL Mobile.
Now, it displays a message on my TV stating to disconnect my device in order to use it.
Is there a way to prevent this check.
Thought would be to root, and allow the screen cast service to work without the phone reporting this is being done.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Am I the only one that this affects?
Or do some people in this community use a custom Rom that avoids this issue. Any response would be greatly appreciated.

It's affecting everyone - /r/Chromecast/comments/2isxbo/nfl_mobile_no_longer_casts_video/ (I can't post links?)
The change appears to have gone into affect at least yesterday.
It went into affect the moment I updated the NFL Mobile app on 10/6/2014. I am thinking, something could be done. If ruining a custom ROM, couldn't there be a way to ensure what ever flagged is engaged when the Cast Screen sevice is used to always show as off, so nfl mobile does not know it is being used.
This also affects the Samsung Allshare media cast device. (Mirror mode on my Note 3).

Makes sense. I did try the factory reset but the app says a new update is required...so I'm guessing rolling it back to the pre-10/6 version wouldn't work.
I believe a similar workaround was developed into custom ROMs for hiding HDMI connections but after searching online I can't find anything that references a similar cloak for the screen cast service.
Now, I am not opposed to rooting my phone and using some hdmi adapter. Anyone confirm if there is a ROM that allows the NFL Mobile to stream to the TV in any means necessary.

I'm far from an expert on this matter, but it seems to me it has something to do with the permissions enabled by the NFL Mobile app. With screen cast/mirroring, you connect these devices wirelessly and you may need to cloak this connection in order to throw off the NFL app? In any event, I'm having the same issue and was hoping someone could help.
A work around includes an app called screen stream mirror. NowI don't have the link to it, but it requires root. It can be used with a chrome cast to allow you to watch video which you normally wouldn't be able to. Cost is $5.00.
What's this teensie I've read about? Hacking your chrome cast, anyone heard about it?
Thank You. I will be making some modifications
Re:
NFL mobile app now checks to see if the phone has been rooted and/or has the developer options turned on. In either case it will not allow streaming to a bigger screen. Back in August 2014 they banned rooted phones altogether from watching preseason games, then because of an outcry, they have allowed them back in partially to watch from the phone but not project onto a big screen. They also have put a DRM protection in so you cannot set up a mock location with a gps spoofer app.
No audio with the "Screen stream mirror" app.

Email the developer. They will work with you.
If your audio does not work, I would assume 1 of 2 things.
1. Your media volume on your phone is turned all the way down.
2. Running a custom ROM that is interfering with how the application works.
Does the audio fall to transmit with every application you open on your phone?

I have a Verizon Galaxy S4 and had the same problem. The recommendation that worked for me was rebooting the Chromecast - just unplug then reconnect the power to the Chromecast unit, wait for it to cycle back up and try again.
Hello All,
Looking for a solution to the title. Need to make my phone turn on WiFi HotSpot when it connects to the Bluetooth in my car. I tried this with Tasker and a guide I found online, but it fails and says error executing action: WiFi Tether.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
OP, I've tried to replicate the problem and it seems that the app doesn't have the proper permissions. Although all app permissions are enabled in the app settings, I think it's missing an additional permission. See screenshot below. You might want to contact support for the app to get the issue resolved.
As for a work around, it may be possible to do what you want with NFC stickers.

Yep, same thing I was getting. None of the automation apps for this particular scenario that exist on the Play Store work either. SecureSettings plugin for Tasker also will not enable WiFi Hotspot. Sounds like the same implementation I have. Thanks for the help! So I would set the profile in tasker, and then the task would be what I put in AutoInput, right?
Thanks again!

I did it backward this time. I created the task first and then I create the profile. I use the state connect to BT to trigger the profile. Also it's very important that you enable smart lock, so your car BT can disable the lock screen and autoinput can do the job. You would need to buy the full version of autoinput since the lite version won't work.
