Samsung Wireless Charging Pack Review - Galaxy Note5 Accessories

Hi Guys,
This is going to be my first review. figured it might help some people decide whether to buy Samsungs Wireless Charging Pack. For those in the Philippines, i got mine at the samsung official store in SM Aura, BGC Taguig
Just got it a few hours ago so this will just be my initial review with photos, ill give a whole day of use review tomorrow when ive had the chance to use it fully.
Findings:
1.) The case is huge, actual measurement with the phone in is 1.8cm or 0.7 inches. It really feels like a brick
2.) It makes the phone heavy. I dont have a way to measure it exactly but an estimate would be a can of coke (the drink).
3.) its not "Fast Charging" feels like the speed of a normal wireless charger, about an hour for 25%. but then its a phone case with a battery so its not much of a bother since there are no cables.
4.) Wireless charging doesnt work with the case on. the case will charge your phone wirelessly, but if you put it on top of your "desk/normal wireless charger" with the case on, it wont charge your phone. case is too thick
5.) not sure if this is safe or if it might damage the phone, but if i plug the case to charge with the phone attached to it, it charges both. the case charges and it charges the phone wirelessly at the same time.
6.) as can be seen on the photo, there is no "over lap" or "lip" when the phone is in the case. if your phone drops screen first, there is no protection
so basically thats all i can say for now. Tom ill try to see if it can charge the phone to full from empty with one charge.
Im a heavy phone user, the note 5 if unplugged at 7am only lasts me till 2pm. so this will help alot. i can deal with the increased size and weight as long as my phone makes it to bedtime.
let me know if you have any questions, ill try to answer them.

thanks for posting pics... been looking for this device.

Where did you get it? I have been looking for this.

How efficient is wireless charging? for example, if the battery pack is 3400MAH and the internal battery is 3000, can the pack charge the phone from 0 and still have some left over? or does it only manage 1 full charge (a waste of 400MAH) or can it only charge up to 90%... etc.

I got it from an Official Samsung store here in the Philippines.

Cant answer this right now because i think i got a faulty unit. Ill return for an exchage over the weekend. Its only able to charge my phone from 10% - 50% before the battery pack goes empty.

Yikes, I hope the replacement one charges better than that.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using Tapatalk

I've been thinking on this and I almost think it would be better to have a separate battery that includes a Qi pad, as opposed to one built into the case.
Built into the case, you always have to tote it around when it might not be useful to you.
you can't use any other case
you couldn't opt for a wired connection, assuming that wired is more energy efficient than wireless.
I'm all about convergence and efficiency, but this doesn't seem to be as beneficial as it ought to be.
In my opinion, a separate battery pack with a qi receiver and fast charger, so it could charge on your pad (or cable) , and then put your phone on top of that, so the phone could charge at the same time as the batter pack.
------ Phone in its case ----------
------ Spare battery ------------
------ Qi Fast charger -----------
The have a magnetic connection between the phone in your own case and the battery pack, so for those that keep their phone loose in a purse or bag or pocket could use it without cables or straps keeping them together.

So did you get the replacement? Any different results on the charge %?

Hi. Yes i did get a replacement. Seems to charge faster also. Well 3 hours from 0 - 80. Im guessing it might be able to charge up to 100% but i use the phone while its charging which could account for the 20%.

I find myself using the fast charging battery pack more. Maybe its just personal preference. But the "wireless pack case" is just too heavy and takes too long to charge that its become cumbersome. While the fast charger battery pack only takes an hour and its done charging

[Q] Wind up/Dynamo charger

Does anyone know a wind up/dynamo charger that works for HD2?
I found quite a few such chargers on ebay, but without any output voltage/current specifications.
Thanks!
Do you have any link ?
What about charging time, turning the dynamo....all night long for a two minutes call ;-)
Outpout should be 5 V / 1000 mAh
Input is muscles !

The 1st one has 5.5V and 600mAh, while the others don't have specs.
wish ebay got some tiny urls...meh i think they would do for emergency...nothing else. manage to get 1 or 2% after 5 mins of hand work
Not for the HD2 but i bought one for my diamond. I found it actually discharged the battery! Winding the handle the diamond displayed that it was charging and i could feel the rotational load increase as the phone started drawing current. However after 5 mins of winding my phone was 1-2% less than before 'charging'!

The same result! I was miffed. I thought that maybe the charging circuitry takes some of the power to operate and that the charger wasn't even providing enough for this, therefore it was drawing the rest of the battery and in turn depleting rather than charging the battery. I'm not sure why this was just my guess (and i'm an electrician )
well guess that answers op's thread
i remember when i was in school for a construction project my class mate was making a wind electricity fan from wood with a dynamo stuck on the tri wing when we tested how much power it produced when spinning it as hard as we could it was producing - power couldn't even light a bulb to show its working haha

Well, I thought about getting a solar charger, but I want something that will charge my cell anytime and not only during daytime or sunshine.
Although, if I don't find a wind up charger, I might end up getting a solar.
So, which one do you suggest? Have you tried it?
there are some solar chargers that can keep the charge in its battery, so even u don't have sun, u can charge it later.
i tend to buy this:

I bought a spare battery & USB charger (Ebay; never had any regrets), as I do with all my earlier smartphones. USB cab be from car, computer, photovoltaic panel or mains unit.

Another useless gadget
Well, slightly offtopic, but the thread was the closest I could find to post the following.
Recently i bought a wind-charger while on vacation in Paris (a charger that uses wind power while you bike for example to charge itself and then you can charge different devices with it).
And here is my negative review for it:
Well, i was very excited to buy this gadget (costed me 30 EUR). I bike a lot and this was also meant to be used for outdoor hiking activities.
But..
First of all the lack of any type of power meter renders the device unreliable to the point of uselessness. You take the charger outdoors (with a 1200 mAh battery inside) and you have no idea how much of the battery is filled(unless you pre-charge it from mains). But then, if i needed just an external battery, there are definitely better and smaller choices.
Second: You cannot pre-charge the charger from mains and charge the phone simultaneously, nor you can charge your device "on the go"-directly from wind..
Third: You cannot turn on the quite weak led lights in front of the device and charge it simultaneously (so, for example if you bike in the evenings when it is late, you have to chose, either you use it's light for safety, or you charge the device. Ridiculous)
Forth: in the description on Uniross site it is said "Can also be charged through a computer or through wall plug". Well, it can be only charged using supplied wall plug, no wire for computer charging..
Fifth: When fully charged from mains it will charge my discharged HD2 only to 60%, which means that it is less then 60% effective in transferring the charge. Also make sure your device will agree on some 500 mA of charging current (most of them will probably)
Sixth: It does need quite strong wind to charge, it starts to charge when your speed (in no wind condition) gets around 15 km/h. People say it needs some 15 km of ride to be fully charged. How they managed to estimate that the charger is fully charged - i have no idea.
Seventh: The charging indicator (which tells you that the speed is enough for charging), is placed right in front of the charger, so to check whether it charges you have to dangerously lean forward or ask the approaching bikers if they see a green LED light- truly stupid design flaw.
Eighth (the most annoying and stupid): YOU HAVE TO CHARGE IT FROM MAINS FOR SOME 20% BEFORE YOU CAN START CHARGING IT FROM WIND!! Can you imagine how dumb this condition is.. first - there is no way to know how long should i charge it from mains to get the necessary minimum 20%. Then, when i am outdoor and lets say charging the phone - if i use all the juice - the charger will become useless, as there won't be a possibility for another startup charging. Then I have to charge till it is decreased to 20% and use the wind to charge it back. HA! there is now way to know that it is on 20%,10% or 30%... how dumb the design and functioning can be... This is truly a raw device they let out on market. Shame for Uniross.
(i will stop here because it is too late...)
I wish i would have read a review like this before i went and got this piece of ... something... Hope it helps someone else.
Attached is the picture of mine in packaging

Solar back?

The design of the Streak seems like it could fairly easily take a back with a solar charger built in. Has anyone seen something like that?
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
I think you would have difficulty finding a solar panel small enough with enough power output to do any good, not to mention having to leave it out in the heat of the sun while it charged.
Good point.
Buts not about replacing the mains charger but adding a little charge while out and about. Prob get a few days extra with solar panel. Unless you forget to take it out of your pocket
I think its a great idea. Maybe a battery with built in cover/solar panel
Sent from my Dell Streak using Tapatalk
does sounds like a good idea you can already get solar phone chargers but one attached to the phone would be great!!
you'd probably be better off looking for one of those solar power batteries that could charge an internal battery, then use it to charge the streak once the charge is up
Solar chargers work under indoor lighting also. My watch never dies on me and I'm indoors all the time. As long as you left the unit face down, it would trickle charge and maybe get enough extra time to never worry about dying out before you get home to your charger.

Problem is the Streak needs an awful lot more power than a watch. I see this panel on eBay http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/5V-150mA...895?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aacb1b777 which they say is 5v 150ma and it's 110mm x 56mm. This is roughly the size of the battery cover on the Streak, but you would need 7 times as much current to successfully charge it.

What if you combined this with the battery idea? So it would charge a second smaller battery, and when your battery was running low you flipped a switch to charge the streak from that? It would start to get bulky but might work?

No you wouldn't, it would charge with only 150ma, it would just take about 10 hours for full charge, in reality, something like this would only slow battery drain on a "super"-phone like this.
That's my point - not to charge from dead, but to top up and maybe get an extra hour or more before searching for an outlet.

Aren't there serious problems with trying to trickle charge Lithium ION cells? As in, it kills them pretty quickly?
Isn't that why loads of modern kit has normal and fast charge modes, depending on what the available amperage on the cable is, and why some things, e.g. iPad, cannot charge at all from some USB ports?
As far as I know the only thing you don't want to do to a lithium battery is let it discharge fully, that shortens the battery life considerably.

This didn't make sense to me, so I Googled. It is correct. I found this quote on a battery research site.
"Similar to a mechanical device that wears out faster with heavy use, so also does the depth of discharge (DoD) determine the cycle count. The smaller the depth of discharge, the longer the battery will last. If at all possible, avoid frequent full discharges and charge more often between uses. If full discharges cannot be avoided, try utilizing a larger battery. Partial discharge on Li-ion is fine; there is no memory and the battery does not need periodic full discharge cycles other than to calibrate the fuel gauge on a smart battery."
There was a chart that indicated that discharging only to 50% as opposed to until it dies can triple the battery life.
The moral is to have it on a charger whenever possible.
Well, according to http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/charging_lithium_ion_batteries
A continuous trickle charge would cause plating of metallic lithium, and this could compromise safety.

It is referring to when they are fully charged, but you would definitely have to cope with that situation, since that's a recipe for exploding batteries, otherwise

After reading that article, this statement I made previously is clearly wrong.
What I gathered from the article is that for max lifespan of the battery, a couple of things should be done:
1) Do not completely discharge.
2) Turn the phone off while charging.
Of course with the Streak it would be impractical to do both of these, as it would mean turning your phone off for an hour or so in the middle of the day.
Oh yeah, and hope like hell that Dell did a good job designing the charger circuitry.

A seperate solar charger might be useful but there's another potential problem with a built in one, that is having to leave the phone lying in the sun for long periods of time, never a good idea.

It would be nice. I have an N7 but haven't bought a charging pad yet because I didn't feel I'd get enough use from it. My N7 battery easily lasts me a full day and I just throw it on the charger at night. No big deal.
I use a Moto X right now and tether my N7 to it on my daily bus commute (~2 hours each day) and I usually need to give the battery some juice before I leave work to have enough for tether on the ride home and the remainder of the evening.
When I get the Turbo, it will easily last a full day. I don't think I'd ever really need the full two days of battery life, but it would be great for long days. My Moto X right now can't make it through an entire day with my usage. I know I'm probably above the bar in SoT (usually 3.5-4h), but I average about 13h, according to GSAM over the last 8 months. Could use a nice big battery to keep me going for 18-20 hours.
I guess it does have wireless charging...
The new DROID comes with a turbo charging feature so when you’re low on battery, a 15 minute charge can get you up to 8 hours of use. DROID Turbo comes with the Motorola turbo power charger in the box at no additional cost. And for added convenience, the new DROID is wireless charging capable.

Awesome..thanks for that
Semi-related.. Can anyone suggest a nice charging pad? I've looked at them for my N7 before and the prices seem to range pretty widely. I understand they charge pretty slowly.. but are they all the same for speed? Does the device need to be perfectly aligned in order to charge? Can I charge two devices at once (N7 and Turbo)?
I'm thinking I'll throw a pad on my desk and one at home, either in the living room (coffee table/end table) or bedside table.
There are some features of a phone that you appreciate more when you have them than you do when you read about them. An example might be high speed charging, their are a few technologies out there for this but the bottom line is when you have it you really come to like it. Its very nice when you have forgotten to charge your phone and you suddenly decide to go out to be able to get a charge on it that will see you through in the time it takes for a quick shower. When it was new and I first read about this it sounded good but no big deal, I usually make it through the day fine and charge over night. Now that I've had it though I really like it.
This is kind of a long way to get around to it but wireless charging is the same way. Its very nice to simply have the pad on the night stand or wherever you may put it and drop your phone on it without having to plug it in. It seems like nothing much but once you get used to it having to plug in seems like a bit of a hoop jump. One benefit of wireless charging that often gets missed is port damage, I have had more than one phone in the household that met its demise by tweaking the micro usb slot so that it either wouldn't charge or couldn't transfer data or both. My understanding is we will still have to plug in to get high speed charging but the ability to do both if we want is a very good thing in my mind.

Good points. I held off on a pad for my N7 because the battery easily lasts me through the day, two if needed (I usually charge it every night, though). Even though the Turbo probably wouldn't need to be topped off during the day like my Moto X would benefit from, it would be nice to have the option. I agree on the Turbo charger too. Great in a pinch if you are at an airport or something and just need some quick juice for a flight or something.
3.9Ah batt's gonna take a long time to charge with a 700mA limit though.
Should be OK overnight. Then again if it's only discharged to 60% when you start it shouldn't be hateful.
Yeah, wireless charging works best where/when you are going to set it down for a while such as over night or when you place the charger where you set your phone in the evening. I used both, one on the nightstand and one on the end table by my chair. In the latter case it is quite convenient since you can answer a text or what have you and simply set it right back down and its charging again. This is why I think its a great feature to have both wireless and high speed by whatever name, they should complement each other well. I say should because I've had both but not on the same phone, I'm really fairly stoked about this handset for this and other reasons.

Nexus 6 quick charging

Hey guys I just bought the Nexus 6 and been looking around here and didnt find anything on best ways of charging the phone. I know the phone comes with the quick charger, but I tried it and the phone got real hot and I am pretty sure its not good for the battery in the long run.
That being said I do not want my battery to start losing charges since it does not have a replaceable battery. I am just curious if anyone on here uses other methods of charging the phone or better yet if anything is proven to be safer to charge. Right now I am charging the phone with my previous Samsung s4 charger and seems to charge fine, but if its not good to do this I would like to know sooner than later.
The n6 is meant to charge fast and isn't the first phone to use fast charge technology so I think we are fine using the stock charger. There's no way a battery charging that fast isn't going to get hot.
Define "real hot."
It is normal for the phone to get quite warm when charging. It should never be hot to the touch though. In this context, by hot, I mean you're unable to hold the phone. If you're able to touch the back, and keep your fingers there for more than a few seconds, then the phone is warm, not hot. Anyone who has had a battery overheat can tell you that the difference is unmistakable.
Chargers will, by definition, heat the battery to some extent -- how much, depends on what kind of charger. The order (from warmest to coolest) is: QuickCharge 2.0 (Turbo Charger), qi wireless charging, QuickCharge 1.0 ("Traditional" 2A charger), Regular 1A charger, USB charger (500ma). However, the heat produced by ANY of these chargers is normal, and the battery was designed to handle it. The life may be lessened by the heat to a very small extent, but it should still last way longer than the 1 to 2 years you'll likely own your phone. Plus, technically, the battery IS replaceable. It's just not designed to be user-replaceable, but there are businesses that will replace them. Or... you can purchase an after-market warranty, most of which cover batteries.

I meant just warmer than normal use of the phone. I understand the phone gets hotter the faster you are charging, however I charge my phone every night so what is the point of the quick charging except when I am at work and my phones about to die?
I just feel that the phone will last longer by not quick charging it, but I could be wrong. What I really want to know is if anyone knows if its better for the phone if you just charge with the 1.0 and if so which charger should I use? Maybe another motorola one or would the samsung one work fine?

Technically, yes, it'd be better for your battery, but realistically, you'll never notice, since you'll probably get a new phone long before battery life becomes an issue.
However, to answer your question, any 1A charger designed for Android devices will work (If they're not designed for Android, they'll show "Charging (USB)" in the battery monitor, and will only charge at 500mA). The brand isn't really important, as long as it's a reputable brand. (...and before you ask, yes a 2A charger will work fine too, but will heat your battery more than a 1A charger.)

Ok thanks...I guess ill continue to use my samsung 1a charger since it works. And I know that I wont have this phone for the whole 2 years, but if I charge the phone every night anyway why take the risk of damaging the battery at all with a stronger charger when I dont need it right?
Anyway thanks for the advice and ill keep using my samsung charger.
Thanks

I put my phone on a wireless charger all night and it gets a little warm but nothing to lose sleep over.

Which wireless charger are you using?
The quick charge technology is designed to quickly charge your phone without reducing charging cycle performance

Wireless Charging

Can we take a minute and just appreciate having this ability built-in? Being able to keep my phone topped up by literally just setting it down on my desk is pretty awesome.
Mods please remove if my fanboy is leaking.
I ended up getting a Sony battery pack + wireless charger device from Verizon when I got my Edge (no doubt some will know what I'm talking about).
It's definitely chunkier than your typical wireless charging pad, but I get 3+ full phone charges from it before it has to be recharged itself (also has pass-through, so you can still use it to charge your phone while it's plugged in).
Build in wireless charging is definitely a great feature.

That's the one (or at least I think it is, there's always the possibility there's a newer model that I have - but it looks/functions the same).
Don't let the negative reviews sway you, a lot of people complain that it's hard to get it to work but I believe that's only because they didn't read the instructions. It states that once you hit the button (to active wireless charging on the pack) you have to place the phone on it pretty quickly - if you don't, it'll start charging and stop after a few seconds. It works just fine through my incipio case and as I mentioned in my above comment I get 3+ charges from it when it's fully charged itself.

This is my first time with wireless charging, and I have to say, what a great feature. I now don't charge with the traditional cable unless I am in my car. I have a four 3 coil chargers from RAVPower and CHOE and they are nice. No issues charging at all. I have a friend who has an Incipio Ghost 120 wireless charger and my phone charges without an issue on that as well. Yea, I don't think I am going to go back anytime soon to regular wired charging unless I have to.

That's one way to keep the charging port pristine!
