I am going to go one step further back and say stock Jellybean ROM. No kidding.
I have 2 1053-s - one I bought new (my "daily driver") and never upgraded from JB (when KK was released initially a lot of people complained about battery life and other issues). Another I bought used and it already had KK. I used the one with KK extensively for a week druing vacation and observed KK is less stable - had WiFi drop offs when downloading offline maps, also complete phone freezes when camera app was working. I never had these kind of problems (or any problems for that matter) with JB.
As for Lollipop - just see how long the thread "how to downgrade from Lollipop" is.
verizon wise, best rom is either kyrptonite 4.4.4(some prefer eclipse, both similar) or Modded LP 1060, both are flawless, at least for me.
Stock Kit Kat because it never gave me any headache.
5.1 only introduced bugs and bad battery.
I would say CM 12.1 is a close second, it has some cool features and the Ambient Display is an actual improvement over Moto Display, waving my hand over the screen to see the time is the best feature.

It's good, but there are better ROMs. Also, it does have some parts on chinese.

I have been using Mokee for my daily driver for close to 2 months. It is by FAR imo the best rom out there and ive used them ALL. I have had zero fcs and yet to find a bug. Plus my signal is not affected as it is with most other roms, plus its one of the few I get LTE with. The few others I am able to get LTE with constantly switches between H+(around 4-7mbps) to LTE(12-30mbps) with Mokee my LTE does not drop below 18mbps. People make it seem as if part of the rom is chinese or something and that is not true at all. There are 4 apps that are included that are chinese. I simply use titanium backup to uninstall them and it causes no issues at all. I use mokee with arrrghhhs any kernel and use inverted 4.4.2 Gapps I found a while back. I highly recommend you give it a go! I use the weekly release not the nightlies. If you do use it you must revert to the stock kernel before upgrading via OTA. Hope you give it a shot dont think you will regret it.

Hi guys hopefully here the community may have an answer for me the thing is this one:
Today I decided to finally give a chance to KitKat based roms after months of watching the forum and development from guys like golden-guy, NovaFusion team and Android-Andy (sorry if I typed one of them wrong) and after trying to install my apps and finish customizing my phone decided to restart my device with one issue in every single rom either it was SlimKat from Android - Andy, Omni from Golden-guy and CM11 and Paranoid from NovaFusion team, some apps were uninstalled with no reason apps like Nova Launcher and SwiftKey just to name a few were not there anymore I don't know if it was because of installing Xposed Framework or what but that issue happened to me with all four roms [emoji17]
I went back to stock as I don't have that issue here, I'm sad because I really wanted to try KitKat after waiting a long time but that problem after every reboot and losing apps out of nowhere has forced me to wait even more.
Is anyone here who has had that issue too? How did you fix it?
If not, any opinion would be really apreciated thanks in advance, peace.

My device bricked on KitKat, better to get rid of your custom binary count while you still can in case it bricks so you can claim your warranty
What about 4.2.2 or 4.3 ROMs?

4.2.2 and 4.3.1 are so much better than stock 4.1.2 since it has so many more features, they're nearly as good as KitKat
I didn't do anything wrong, it bricked when I was charging it in January and I installed KitKat on December!
We are witnessing the great activities of developers and the appearance of more custom ROMs in the last time. All of them are lolipop custom roms and I wonder why there is so little KK cusom ROM (only Microkat ). It would be nice if some of the developers made a decent kk custom rom, because I think kk is much more appropriate for our phone. What do you think?
I don't think KK is more appropriate for our phone.
The memory issue is quite annoying. i cant even play music while browsing the web in google chrome.
And the main reason actually is because the rollout of lollipop. I bet most people are interested in the newest version of Android then a older one.

Why do You think so? Yes , RAM managment in Kitkat is bad , but I found that in lollipop is even worse.
With all other bugs from lollipom I think that is KK better option for now.
I still hope we will see CM 11 or PA based on KK for our device.

Sure we don't get much KK roms. I'm not interested in porting & fixing CM11 so I guess no one will do it XD
I have received the new lollipop update today, and I must say that it's faster and smoother than kitkat. Oh and battery live is also better.

A LOT of the poor performance issues of Lollipop can be cured by either a clean flash or factory reset
- can be a pain to reload stuff but can improve Lollipop no end
- battery use can be masked by clean flash - no apps etc
- once you load everything you had on kitkat it is the same or worse, depends on usage.
Lollipop use ART , Kitkat uses DALVIK, in time DALVIK will be phased out or not supported by apps

Yes i know , and thank You for hard work on CM 12.
If I had enough knowledge to do it myself it would be nice.
But who knows, hope dies last.
I've tried CM 11 and it was decent, except for the app redraws at times. Any other KitKat based Custom Roms that give decent performance and battery life?
I've tried many Lollipop based ROMS such as CM 12.1 and Candy 5 ROM but they have app redraws and the phone charges very slowly on Candy 5 ROM. I haven't tried AOSP but in general I think stock KitKat 4.4.4 was faster and better than stock Lollipop 5.0.2.

Titan Prime 1.03 is a very stable Lollipop. No charging or redraw issues and it's stock based. There is a later version, but 1.03 seems to be the best.
Sent from my GT-P5210 using Tapatalk
According to me the best kitkat based rom you can use is stock rom itself.. It gives the best battery backup and best multitasking.. For battery life use Greenify and hibernate all the useless apps you don't use (I get around 5hrs+ of on screen time) and for multitasking use the RT Ram manager script by DiamondBond and choose supermultitasking option in it. After that install xposed with GravityBox so you can have all the cyanogen mod features! I'm using it since 3 months and yes I've tried all the lollipop and kitkat roms (including cm11)and byfar, stock rom is the most stable and battery efficient rom you can ever get.

The reason I'm looking for a KitKat based ROM is because I found that KitKat ran faster than Lollipop for me. I compared my friend's Moto G2 (running Lollipop stock) and my Moto G2 (running KitKat) and my phone opened up apps and everything evidently faster than his phone. My theory is that if stock lollipop is slower than stock kitkat, all custom ROMs based on Lollipop will be slower than ROMs based on KitKat.
I've used CM 12.1 as well as Candy 5 ROM (which was praised for its RAM management) but I got app redraws on both of these and battery charging was quite slow on the latter.
Anyway, I'll give Titan Prime ROM a shot and see how it goes. However, in case that doesn't work well, could you suggest a decent KitKat based ROM?
If it were me I'd do what the other poster said, stay on stock and root. For the simplicity of installing flashable zips like xposed, I would also install TWRP as a custom recovery.

Thanks, I'll do that...
Also, just because the 5.1.1 based custom ROMS (such as CM 12.1 and Candy 5 ROM) lag, is it right to infer that 5.1.1 stock will also lag (i.e. when it releases for Moto G 2nd gen) ?

I would think not. I personally don't use the CM based roms, for various reasons I don't care for them. Honestly though, I have had no lagging on the stock based roms. I do put Titanium Backup on first thing and debloat any rom I flash. Right now on 5.02 with transitions turned off in developer options, my phone is just as fast as it ever was in kit kat.

Thanks... Is there a specific reason that you turn off the animations? Does keeping them on give you any issues as such?
EDIT: Also, I should mention that majority of the app redraws I do face are when I press the home button whilst using Chrome (even though only 1 tab is open and no other major apps are in the background).
Try MicroMod by DiamondBond: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/development/rom-micro-mod-11-t3032290
Very smooth and stable tho not being a custom ROM. Just don't update apps from the play store and try expose for customization.

Well, @DiamondBond optimized the apps himself (compressed for less ram usage and better performance) and when you update them, the optimization is lost.
Still, this is (in my opinion) the best rom so far, very very fast, stable and smooth.
Thanks...

I didn't have any problems with animations, they just didn't add anything for me. I like instant and that combined with "faster than light" in Nova's settings gives me instant everything.

Chomp SMS lets you do that in stock Kit Kat. It's best feature that I lost in Lollipop was it auto enabling data to send or receive MMS, then disabling data. The developer wasn't able to offer that feature in Lollipop.

Hey,
I'm still using the stock 4.3 ROM currently but it is sooo slow and laggy so I want to upgrade to a custom ROM. I'm looking for a fast and stable ROM and don't care that much about customization. Should I go for a 6.0.1 ROM or a 5.1.1 ROM? Is 5.1.1 more stable?
I looked through some ROMs from Lollipop Hub and came to the conclusion that Candy5 seems to be one of the fastest ROMs. It is supposed to be combined with the Tangerine Kernel, but that is discontinued. Can I use the Helium Kernel instead?
Since Candy5 was not updated in some time, but Sabermod was, should I rather take Sabermod? And if so, should I use the included kernel or take another one?
Most of the ROMs from Marshmallow Hub have been updated in the last couple of days. Does this mean that I have to (or at least should) update my ROM, if I chose on from here, every couple of days/weeks as well? I would prefer something that I install once and then I'm good for a while .
So, what I am basically asking is: Should I go for a Marshmallow or a Lollipop ROM (and why) and which one is the most stable and has the best performance (and with which kernel should I combine it)? For Lollipop: Candy5 or Sabermod? For Marshmallow: CM13 or Sabermod or Temasek? Or something completely different?
edit: Please don't read this as "what is best ROM, I am too lazy to test stuff myself"
I mostly need help deciding between Marshmallow and Lollipop, and, if Lollipop is "better", as in more stable/faster, then I need to know if Candy5 is a good option and which kernel to take with it (since the last update was in December, I have no idea if it is outdated or something and the reviews in the Lollipop hub are from October...^^).

Ok sound good . I read on some CM13 ROMs that the camera was not working and that the problem is within CM13 and not the ROMs issue... is this still the case? Because some CM13 ROMs do NOT have this written in their bug section Oo

Unfortunately, I own this phone and will not buy a new one just because you don't like it.
To me, it's a decent phone and with a fitting ROM I'm pretty sure that I will be quite content with it.
Performance and stability depends on the rom, not the version itself. Most of the lp and mm roms are "almost" bugfree right now. So, try whatever you like. I couldn't see much difference between them but I loved marshmallow more.
Also in my humble opinion, carbon lp gives better performance compared to the candy5. Especially when combined with helium.
I used CM 12.1 But i think it was a little buggy. Cm 13 is great smooth, no bugs whatsoever. I also recommend XOSP. Its fast too and it looks like a proper Xperia device

I'm running CM13 Sabermod with stock kernel and it runs smoothly and I have not noticed any bugs yet. It's a bit laggy playing Pokemon GO (which was the main reason for my upgrade from 4.3 lol), but I'm relatively sure that its because of the "outdated" hardware, which no ROM can fix.
So thank you to everybody that actually contributed something to this thread
