[Q] SGNote unnatural colors?

Since I can't see an SGNote in a store yet, curious if the SAMOLED's less than natural colors ever bothers you, they seem to bother me on the lower resolution SAMOLED phones but a bit less on the same res but lower pixel density Tab 10.1 screen (however I prefer Transformer's IPS for a tablet)? -Thx
P.S. - I've heard mention in video reviews that the SGNote does have better color calibration than its other SAMOLED's handhelds.

i was shocked at how different the colors where when i got my capitvate. unnatural is the only way to put it. took me a long time to get use to the pumped up color amoled screen. (certain colors are increased because that is ones your eyes see easier making the screen pop) so when i was thinking of buying the note i had read that samsung gave the owner the choice to change that pumped up look to a more natural scheme i was thrilled. the lower saturation of color feels more closely to regular lcds. when i hold the phone next to my high end computer monitor with the same picture they are very similar in hue and saturation. although sometimes when i am showing off the big screen phone to friends i switch to the standard amoled setting (because the colors pop) i usually choose the lcd type setting for everyday use. hope this helps.

P.S. - Even on my newer Samsung TVs, when someone with blue eyes comes on the screen they can look fluorescent fake giving it a sci-fi vibe that can look ridiculous!

Zedomax did it http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=RsmDvvckt6k#t=1096s but ideally still would like to see it in person. The higher res screen must help as the colors are not bothering me like they do on lower res SAMOLED screens. I'll check out the 720p SGNexus in person even though I don't think it has the SGNote 3 color settings ("Dynamic, Standard, Movie" in Settings->Display-Screen Mode) that provide more user control.
Still would also like to see the SGNote with other launchers+cool live wallpaper as I'm no fan of the stock TouchWiz look..it shouldn't be too difficult to make it look cooler than stock right?

What screen mode are you using?

As with previous Samsung devices you can choose between various display modes, some are more accurate than others and different people prefer different look. Which mode are you running?
Adaptive display- Far too saturated colors, white point is too high(blue)
AMOLED Cinema- less saturated than Adaptive display but white point is still too high
AMOLED Photo- colors are slightly too saturated, white point is pretty good(right around 6.5k).
Basic- This is suppose to be the most accurate mode according to display mate but the UI and icons look washed out(perhaps because the UI colors were designed with very high saturation in mind?) . This mode is great for photos and videos though.
Update - I've started using basic mode. It took much longer than expected to get use to it but once I did I won't look back.

I personally always go for the most technically accurate, which is funny cause it's called basic mode lol.

I just use adaptive. Then it aaaaaaaaaadapts. Which is fine. Basic is too washed out for me. Maybe Ill do a week basic and see if it grows on me, though.

I don't think adaptive display does a great job at adapting lol at least not from what I have seen....I've compared Note 4s side by side at work and adaptive doesn't really seem to adapt at all regardless of the type of media that is being displayed, still looks far to saturated and the white point is too high. Some people like that though which is why it's set to that by default.

I though the same thing as well, at first. Cinema mode looked more like my Galaxy S4 which I was use to. I decided to give photo mode a go though since its significantly more accurate and it grew on me after a few hours. It takes a while for your eyes and brain to readjust.

Yeah I think I'll try out basic for a while and see if it grows on me.

I've just switched to basic. I used the equivalent of it on my Galaxy Tab 7.7 which also had an amoled display and I soon got used to the correct colours. Every time the phone rebooted it would start in the default before switching and you could see just how over saturated the colours are.

Yeah, same here. After using the stock color mode for years, it took me a while to get used to the accurate colors. But once I did, I could see the difference in how over saturated the colors were on stock mode. But it's definitely a preference, some people like the colors to pop.

Oversaturated colors are the best thing about AMOLED in my opinion.

Still using basic here. HAHAHAHA. But planning to try Cinema soon

I use adapted display. Don't care how accuracy color is Basic, it just wash out to me.
Cinema is crazy saturation.
Photo mode a bit yellowish, too warm.

I like cinemas cool color as photo is too warm for my tastes. I never use adaptive and basic looks off to me.

Actually its supposed to save on battery power.

Clarity/resolution

The LG V20 has a crazy crisp display. Just kidding, this is automated text so who knows if this screen is any good. So, you be the judge! A higher rating indicates that it's extremely sharp and clear, and that you cannot see pixels with your naked eye.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

i hate the image retention, my sony z3c, samsung note 4/edge not having the same issue.

?
It's past 1 year mark.
The screen ghosting issue is so prominent that it's annoying.
This is well known in the.forum's but it's not something that lg is talking about.
I'm going to have to find out if there is a recall or can get this fixed.
Truly disappointed.

The color reproduction on the LG panels is actually *really* good. Samsung cranks the vibrancy and saturation up on their displays because it is pleasing to most people's eyes. If anything, Samsungs color reproduction is vastly inferior with default settings. Both class of panels can be calibrated to be more correct though.
The other thing is that LGs colors are "cooler" and Samsung *always* biases towards warmer displays.

As we all knows people want Color vibrancy which Samsung is delivering actually.
I've tried to calibrate my display many time but even LG's display can't compete with Samsung's 2013 flagships display.

In what ways? And don't forget you are comparing an IPS-LCD to SAMOLED+ which will have vastly better blacks. LCDs can't yet compete on the contrast of an OLED.
I don't care what people want. They jump from one has to another and sacrifice utility for form at the drop of a hat.
I'll keep my color correct LCD that won't suffer from actual burn in
(My retention is all but nonexistent and that isn't permanent regardless)

Whatever it is.... There is no comparison between Ips LCD and SuperAmoled display .
By the way your retention problem can simply be fixed if you're rooted

You can try using the built-in Comfort View to make the display warmer. I set mine to high and it looks really close to my Galaxy Note 4, using the Basic display color option.

Yup that one. I use high on mine. Here's a comparison to my Note 4 with the basic color mode. The Note 4 is warmer here, but I'd say that it's pretty close. And a heck lot better than stock.

Display Uniformity Problem

I didn't expect 1000€ device still has this issue.

It is dark solid grey background.
In dark room open this image and set brightness to low. You should see uniform gray color.
I think at least 90% devices has this problem.

Feel free to enlighten me but unless you spend all your time looking at a dark solid grey background, I don't see why this is an issue. I have tested mine with a similar image and to my eyes, the screen is perfect.

Many apps has dark gray background. First I didn't test anything I just noticed it in youtube app - dark mode. Its quite disappointing.
I tried all three links on another pc and they are working.

While they do have a dark grey background, there is usually something in front of the background to draw your eye to instead.
Thanks for letting me know about the links, it's amazing how editing your post, fixing the links and saving the post makes the links work. I did check the links and all I see is noise.

Not every time background is covered by content. I can clearly see difference on youtube app, top part of display is slightly lighter and greenish and bottom is darker and reddish.
I did nothing to the links. I just tried to add pictures (insert image) but it didn't work.

Actually, mass production usually aims for less than 1% failure rate, so I'm pretty confident you got one of those >1%.
Considering YOU are the only one complaining, then yes, you're probably one unlucky person.
If you were talking about a Google Pixel 2/3, then yes, you're likely to have a **** screen, because that's how they are. Samsung screens aren't like that at all - the Note 9 has one of, if not THE best screen available on any phone.

I am pretty sure they will agree to change it + the chances to draw again a problematic display are really slim. Sadly some do have such a problem and actually I saw a lot worse on the xda forums. Return it for exchange is my advice.

It got better over the years, but still I estimate only 10-30% of all Amoled screens are perfect.
Samsung makes things right in terms of quality management, because most customers do not notice this flaw, but if you are sensible to it, it's hard to ignore!
in my threads I also explained the reason for this, which is how amoled screens are produced. they are cut out of wafers after lithography. only devices cut out of the center of the wafer have almost uniform screens. the more from a side your screen has been cut out, the worse the screen quality will be.

I think it has improved a lot since a couple of years. Before that, I used to swap my Samsung phones once or twice to get a decent one.
But the last 4 or 5 phones I bought, all with Samsung screens, were all perfect.
That includes Pixel 2 (not XL), Note 9, S8+, P20 Pro, etc....
Either I got extremely lucky to get as many perfect screens in a row, or they really improved things. Now I think it will happen to me again to have a bad one, but I'm not as nervous anymore. It's not a lottery anymore.
My Note 9 in particular is extremely impressive with a perfect screen. Perfect whites, no uniformity problem with any shades of grey at any brightness. Pure oled bliss.
BUT, I've had so many problems before that I'll ALWAYS be a little nervous before unboxing an oled screen smartphone. I've been burned too many times with crappy panels.
Let me tell you I was extremely nervous the day I bought my LG Oled 4K TV 55"..... Thousands of dollars thrown at an Oled panel lottery.... I was lucky this time again

So I think almost everyone has this uneven screen but maybe some of you have less sensitive eyes or just don't want to see this problem

So my question is, does this affect your use of the device? Is it causing wear and tear on you vision? Or is it just an OCD/OCPD effect?
To me personally, stuff like this is pointless to have an issue with even on a phone that costs $1000. Unless it's to the point where you can't use the device because you see the defect on everything.
To another comment I saw that included the word "Perfect," NOTHING is perfect, and there will never be such a thing that could be perfect because of our human definition of what perfection is. It's good to strive for Better, but it's pointless to strive for Perfection.
Btw, I did download the Pic and tested it on my Note 9 and my wife's Note 8, and the uniformity is affected on both devices. I also looked at the image on my 4K TVs and my LCD monitors and the effect is there. Are you sure the image itself is uniform?

Perfect screens exist. I have some. I have perfect eyesight. I was a combat helicopter pilot in the french army. I know what to look for. If it is there I see it. If it is not, I don't. It's a fact. It's science. Not some voodoo magic wishful thinking.
I've had terrible screens. I've had some perfect. Nowadays I get more good ones than bad.
Bad ones still exist, but it my opinion that they are less and less common.
Against clear backgrounds you won't see much apart from a slight shift in color temperature.
Against dark grey at indoor brightness you can have incredible differences between some parts of the screen.
If you use a dark theme (not black), you will see it all the time.
Does it prevents you from using the phone ? No of course not.
Does it suck on a 1000 dollars phone ? Yes.
Some people are insensitive to that kind of thing. Good for them.
It's not an OCD. It's the will to have a good looking screen.
I like good looking women. I don't think it's an OCD. I know what I want, that's all. And I want the best. Nothing less.
If you want to settle with average, good for you.

You do know that you have to have a perfect eyesight to be a combat pilot, do you ?
Acuity, color, contrast, night vision, side vision, field of view, and much more. Everything is tested BEFORE you're even allowed to go forward in the selection process.
Most people fail those tests. That's sad but that's life.
As a side note, you don't have to have perfect vision to see those screen problems.
They can be very obvious to anybody open minded enough.
Close minded people though, will always be impervious to such matter.

And yes I do know you have to have "Perfect" eyesight to join some military air forces.?
And I hope you aren't calling me closed minded. I never said someone has to have perfect eyesight to see the differences of the pixels in the image.

It's like the night light feature is on constantly at a very low level - anyone else finding this?

I thought this too when receiving the phone but not sure it's an issue. I quickly got used to that and I usethe "natural" color profile. I think it was just that my previous phone (huawei) was just a bit too saturated and my eyes quickly got used to it. But yeah white seemed a bit off for me the first time, especially at low brightness level.

My colours are well washed out on mine got it on boosted makes no different

Yeah on my pixel 3 the natural, boosted and adaptive all seemed pretty different - on the pixel 5 I struggle to see the difference. Adaptive looks best though.

Dude! Thanks!! I really love the P5 but the colours... My whole screen looks dusty and brownish.
The contrast of the P3 is so superior I almost want to change back to the P3 again.
Does anyone have a device with a nice contrasty display?

Same with me: I come from a Pixel 2 XL which I configured for saturated mode. Obviously, it had ridiculously exaggerated colors. I too noticed the brownish touch but it look quite pleasing and natural. Although switching color modes does not make much if a difference. But yes, adaptive looks most punchy, therefore I stick with it.

Also, is there are way to turn the night light feature off permanently? I thought there was a was to do this on the pixel 3. On the pixel 5 I only see the option to turn it "off until sunset"

Options --> Display --> Nightlight --> no schedule.
It's turned off for me.
But to be honest it feels as if it is still on...
I really begin to hate the display, as I thought the times of ****ty yellowish/beigeish displays is over!
And because of the colortone it even seems to be less contrasty that my P3....
I'm gonna try to do some pictures when there's some spare time in my life.

It feels like it's still on a tiny bit doesn't it. Hopefully it was a design decision by Google to make the screen more "natural" and it's not a limitation of the panel. Then they can fix it with an update.

I do not know what happened: Yesterday the brownish tint was clearly visible but it seems gone today. Was it a reboot? Was it the downgrade from Play Services Beta to the latest stable? I do not now. Seems to be a software issue because it is (temporarily?) gone. My best guess would be a non-working color management calibration. And if so: Software can be fixed!

Are you sure you're not just getting used to it?
A reboot hasn't changed anything for me and I also never used the Google service beta (which I'm thinking about joining now )

Define awful?
What's to say the S20 Ultra isn't the one that's bad? Samsung always oversaturate, even in their natural profile.
