So, I was bored and sitting in class, when I decided I should add my D3 to my laptop as a bluetooth device (for file transfers down the road).
After I established a connection, I figured out you can tether through bluetooth.
Here's how (for Windows 7):
1) Press Start
2) Open "devices and printers"
3) Enable bluetooth on your phone
4) Click on "add a device" in the top-left of "devices and printers" on your computer
5) Establish a connection.
6) Find your D3 in the list of devices
7) Right click the phone's icon
8) Hover your mouse over "connect using" so that "access point" pops out to the right of the menu
9) "Click "access point"
10) INTERNET
just found this out too...
is there any way for verizon to figure out that youre doing this (other than the obvious 'if youre torrenting and pulling huge amounts of data they'll know')
I don't know if they can or not. I've pulled over 15gb of data this month (on my Incredible before I switched to D3 2 days ago) using the wireless tether app. I know they can't with that, so maybe this works the same way.

No offense, but it's people like you that caused Verizon to implement data caps and the new tiers in the first place.

They offered unlimited packages then get indignant when someone uses more than a couple hundred megs.
They put the new tiers in place PURELY to make money. They know as people start using netflix and spotify/pandora they will use more and more data. They could have beefed up the network, or charged people so much money that people won't be able to use the features they bought on said phones.
They went with option B.
I didn't see this post before, I've been trying to get Wifi Tethering to work on my SIM Based (3G) Droid 3 on Telstra (in Australia).
I tried everything, new ROM, wifi tether hack, tether market apps but nada. It would connect to Wifi, but either NAT doesn't work, or something like that is stopping data from passing "through" the phone.
This morning I thought maybe I can get Bluetooth tether to work with my Asus Transformer (unrooted).
After pairing, and selecting "Internet Access" in the pairing options on the tablet everything works! Awesome. I was so close to sending this phone back.
All I need to do now is work out how to fix the CRAPPY battery life! (and figure out wifi tether when I have more time).
Cheers
If you want more battery life, get the official extended battery. It gets me through a heavy day of usage with ~20% to spare.

This works with my Asus Transformer as well. I was using my Droid 3 bluetooth to tether my Transformer tonight. Worked great!

I'm in the same boat as you. All I've got left to deal with now is Verizon's radio lockout of the call forwarding/waiting options, and i'm set.
I haven't got around to testing the Chinese radio yet...

The technology has been around a while, its greedy carriers that have been blocking it. It makes no sense with metered data plans, x GB is still x GB whether consumed on the phone or on a tethered computer. We are surprised the Droid 3 and other Droid phones can bluetooth tether for free without root. Why would I pay for wifi tether when bluetooth is free. I'm not sure what the speed limit of bluetooth is but I get full 3G speeds.
Mine is extremely slow on my work laptop compared to when I use the mobile hotspot. Is this normal? It's a work laptop and they still force me to use windows XP could that have something to do with it?
Is this free without any rooting/hacking?

Some of you may remember me havin some complaints about my n5 droppin searvice randomly. I was about to get an rma. Im glad i didnt.
I have tried everything to fix it. So last resort is to rma the device.
So, i was waitin in a tmobile store to pay my bill, and i started playin with a display nexus 5. Luckily, the phone was hooked up to their LTE network. So i got an idea and started a download. Low and behold guess what happens. The same EXACT thing my phone does.
And out of all irony the song "I want my money back, I want my money back" is playing in the store.
I dont think an rma is the solution here.

Never ever had this problem. Guess its because of your service provider. In your location the infrastructure of your service provider is propably not as good as you think.
as well as im not having such an issue with tmobile. but im in nyc, and tmobiles network in the area is fairly new and improved.
Hmm... I get a great lte signal all around town. Mostly 43mbps, when it works. I heard the n5 uses some new "low power lte" or somethin. Maybe they have issues with it here?

not really low power lte, but the newer lte radio that the n5 uses does do much better on battery than previous versions of lte.
I'm in Arizona with tmobile and I sometimes have my network drop maybe at least once a day.
No network drops in Vegas...
Definitely it's a N5 issue. I'm in Europe and I have this problem. I remember reading in forums about that when I bought my phone. As long as I was on 4.4.2 I never had a single issue. After updating on 4.4.4 I have network issues few times a day.

its called a network issue for a reason. its an issue with your network, not the device. i didnt have issues on on 44, 441, 442, 443, nor 444. network issues relate to your network.
Well if it is my network, how come when i lose the network, sometimes the phone will also reboot. Dont think thw network would cause that

just as your phone shouldnt be rebooting. so your "network issue" can be related to whatever you are running on your phone. that would be on the personal level, so id check into what i am running. my nexus 5 has never had an issue with rebooting.

Me neither. I'm running 4.4.4 stock unroofed unmodified and never had random reboots or network drop.

Reflash stock firmware, clean. Go a few days without any apps installed. This will show if its phone/network related, or app related.
If it still acts up on fresh install. Try someone elses Sim, preferably on another network. If it's OK... Then you've narrowed it down to your Sim, or again, you're network.
Process of elimination. ?
Same thing happens to me on AT&T. It has happened with 3 separate N5s and doesn't happen with my Moto X. Yeah, it's an N5 problem. The radio in this phone is garbage.

You guys dont understand. Ive tried everything. Flashed to stock, 4.4.1,4.4.2,4.4.4 relocked the bootloader. Called tmobile ten times, different radios, sim cards, pulled the sim for 5 mins, different roms, apns, Same exact problem every time. Did you not read my OP? Even the display model with nothing on it did the same exact thing. Maybe its a flawed design, where some phones have this problem, and others dont. Maybe its a combination of the phone and the network. I dont think well ever know

Stock. Every N5 I have owned has been stock, and all have had network dropping issues, and all have had difficulty maintaining LTE. No problems with my Moto X, none with my iPhone 5s when I had it, and none with any other LTE phone I've owned while on AT&T. Just the Nexus 5.

i think that you are the one actually not seeing the issue. your phone drops data, you watched the store phone lose data as well. your phone and that other is on the same network. it doesnt sound like a phone issue, it sounds as if its your local network that is having the issue.
It's a radio/network combo issue. I never had drops on the 4.4 radio. Since 4.4.1 and above, i get these network drops on a daily basis.
Go to your battery stats, look for cell standby and check the "time without a signal" percentage. I usually have 10-11% of my uptime.
I got fed up with this crap, so reverted earlier today to the 4.4 radio (1.0.25.0.17). Still too early to make any judgment.
Hey guys !
I have a problem with my Nexus 6. I'm running stock 5.1.1 unrooted with latest update(48M) and keep getting dropped calls (I only use 3g). It doesn't happen all the time, today I got 4 dropped calls. I'm not quite sure what's the problem. I have the phone for 1 week and I'm not sure if that's a hardware or software problem. (I also had Chroma installed and had the same problem)
Are you guys facing this issue?
Is there any thing I can do?
Thanks !
When I had my Samsung Note 3, I was dropping 7% of my calls according to Verizon. They told me to buy a network extender from them for $150 but that is less than useless. I solved the problem when I bought my Nexus 6 because it is a Motorola phone and supposedly has the best radios. You may live in an area where you have a weak signal. If that is the case, you can live with it or move to a different area. As long as I live here, I will never be anything other than a Motorola phone.

Still sounds carrier related. Moto has best radios out there. Try different radios from other builds. Radios are tower dependent. Sometimes older radios work better for a specific area. Has to do with tower upgrades.

I edited my post. Try different radios and then check the DBM value in settings>about phone>status>sim status. Should be below -105. Any value over that is pushing signal. Will have to be unlocked at a minimum to fastboot flash the radios. To recovery flash radios will need TWRP custom recovery. Root not required.

I'm not having problems with the signal in general. The problem is that it simply drops while in a call. ( from full to no network)

I've had the same problem several times. No voice, no data randomly. The only thing that has ever fixed it is a factory reset. If you use TWRP it doesn't wipe /media. It seems to happen when I update the image or change kernels, but not every time. Bizarre.

In my case there is no need to restart the phone or reset it. It will go back to normal in max 30 seconds.
Mine generally goes back to normal as well, but I don't like dropping every call I make or take. A factory reset cures the problem until I update the next time.
Just flashed dp3. Will test to see it things got fixed.

I'm curious about this too. I'm on Chroma right now and have dropped calls pretty frequently, which really sucks considering a large portion of my job involves talking on the phone. I've had 4 dropped calls in one short 5 minute conversation and was very frustrating for me and the person on the other end. Any suggestions or solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Anyway, known issue and other then switch it to 2g I didn't figured out any other workaround....
Need some advice on the next step. My moto x wifi and Bluetooth stopped working all together. This started about a month ago and the wifi would stop and start working interminently.
At first the wifi would turn on but wouldn't connect to the router, it would just save but no sign of connecting. And then i flashed all the latest (5.1) official components of the Verizon Rom including the modems (basically followed the exact steps from a thread here) as it is a xt1060. Still had the same issue so i switched to another router and it worked but would disconnect at times.
A month later and the wifi/Bluetooth has stopped working all together. When trying to switch wifi to ON position it would slide right back to OFF. I tried alot of different roms including the officiak CM but no resolve.
I am coming to a conclusion that somehow the wifi module is fried but if you know something i don't then please help before i visit a technician who's gonna charge me the same as the cost of this device.[emoji16]
Appreciate any help guys.

That's a hardware failure. The symptom of the radio, whether BT or WiFi, turning itself back off is definitive.
Sorry.

So I'm guessing that would require a replacement of the entire logic board. Or is their a way for the tech to just replace the wifi/Bluetooth chip?

Sorry, don't actually know how they are put together. But, yes, I would guess it's soldered onto the mainboard.
This morning same thing had happened to my xt1052 device, had same symptoms over the last few months as described by OP, also tried latest stock firmware hoping it would revive this device but it wasn't happening. Then I got all excited after stumbling upon this thread but quickly realised that nothing was missing in my /persist folder which had proper file sizes . Very disappointed indeed.
My issue seems to pop up when LTE is in use. After using it, LTE will jus stop working for a couple minutes. Signal will still be there and LTE but won't work. Thinking about getting a replacement but I wanna see if any other Sprint users have had this problem

When connected to LTE it doesn't load fast like with ur note 8. But I'm not having the 3g issue. Still a problem though
After calling Sprint again today to look into this issue...they were baffled and could not figure it out so a ticket was created for Tech support to call me back in 5 - 7 business days.
I got off the phone and did some more trouble shooting on my own again. I starred at the phone for awhile and got a wild thought abt my lil plastic case I had on the phone...and sure enough thts wht it was. Just a plastic case with separate top an bottom peices tht was plastic to look like metal...and i do believe that thm 2 lil pieces on my case was interfering with the signal. I have the exact same case on my iPhone 7 Plus jus a different color and there is no interference at all. I took the case off and hav had the best signal...full bars and LTE ever since...All this time it was the case that was purchased from Sprints website. So I will be taking the case back because my phone is now completely naked lol and I need a new one. Problem solved!

Well..... back again. Same issues. Pages load at a snail pace. LTE cute in n out. Downloads seem to be unaffected though. I did a speed test and got this result...
Just returned my Note 8 today before the 14 day period. Had multiple issues with network...and multiple calls with tech support.
No calls coming through, straight to vm...double texts. Getting a replacement in a couple days, hoping for much better experience.
Had issues before i put a case on it. Tech support did all the usual reset, reactivation, *720, 730, 740, multiple prl and profile updates. Figured it was only going to get worse. Didn't want to risk not being able to return. $35 restocking...oh well. Back to my trusty note 2 for a couple days
Sprint tech and manager tried to tell me that that practically the whole city had tower issues and that the phone was working as its supposed to. I use the phone for work, so reliability is important. Sprint store did everything in their power to prevent a return. Diagnostics run on some Windows 95 laptop was a joke.
