I've been using a defective Bionic since launch now. The last OTA update completely destroyed my data connection, to the point of it becoming so unreliable that I need a new one. After talking to Tier 2 Tech Support, they are sending a Bionic and want mine back. It is rooted and has safestrap with Eclipse 3.0 on the safe side. How can I be sure that Verizon will not know that I rooted it?
Only thing you can do is to reflash .902/.905. A hard reset isn't going to wipe the rom, just your user data.

Even if I didn't flash ICS? This will remove root and my entire safestrap system?
I just sent one back that was rooted and on ICS. I didn't bother to wipe anything before sending back. I just pulled my cards and put it in the box.
Though i did tell Verizon that i flashed it i don't remember mentioning root. Does anyone really think they would pursue money on a phone with known data failure units? My problem was that i couldn't get/keep 4G.

If it was any carrier other than big red, they probably couldnt care less, but big red is evil and they are all about money! If there is a way for them to charge you for something, they will!
But like previous poster said he sent his back, if they havent said anything by now, then they wont. They probably didnt even check, all they are going to do is reflash .905 on it, then remarket it as a refurb.

Uninstall safe strap and use stock recovery to flash an update zip of whatever ota you told them messed up your data. You need to make sure you're in whatever version you told them because they do record notes for every open case. It seems to me that your phone is working well enough for you to use an unroot method that is posted here on xda

Anyone had any luck with the data signal actually being better on the "new" device? I'm in the same boat, sending my rooted, but still stock Bionic back tomorrow, but not sure if exchanging one unit for another with the same hardware/firmware will really make a difference??
There were some earlier posts on AC about folks getting RAZRs in exchange for their BIONIC's.

In my area I don't get 4G. Only 3G and the signal is pretty bad near my work which is in the sticks. However when I travel to a 4G area I have no issues with my signal. Despite every phone using the same hardware/firmware there could be issues with the hardware itself that might be bad. Another phone may or may not fix the issue. It's almost like saying similar cars are going to perform the same. It will vary from batch to batch. There's no telling if you're not getting a phone with the same bad radio hardware or maybe it's not your phone and the actual signal coming from the tower. Verizon/Motorola isn't going to fess up to anything and unfortunately we're their pawns. It's always the blaming game for them. The RAZR and Bionic both share the same hardware but different firmwares. However the RAZR uses a processor that can handle the 1.2ghz speeds while the Bionic may or may not reach those speeds. The processor in the RAZR are stress tested to 1.2ghz while the ones in the Bionic were only tested @ 1ghz. I dunno how the radio hardwares are tested but some may be able to handle certain frequencies and some not. I have no clue about the deviances in the radio frequencies but is it possible my towers are different from your towers? I dunno that's not my area of expertise.
Dont worry about it being rooted i sent back 2 stratospheres with root and a custom boot screen and 2 droid 4 with the leak ics with root i really dont think they look at them

So I recently bought my M8 and would love to root, but there have been a lot of reports of issues with data because of csfb issues. I have not had this issue, but if I do start having it or any other issue, I want to be able to go back to stock and return my phone to Sprint. I am currently in the 14 day return period and I have insurance. On my last phone, I was rooted and was having issues with my battery and went back to Sprint, and the guy there told me that he could not work on it if it was rooted. He was a pretty cool guy, but he made is sound like it was a really big deal that I rooted. I have searched on all the Sprint M8 threads and I can't find a way to go back to stock. And I mean completely stock. Finding a stock ROM, Kernel, and recovery is easy, but I am not sure about s-on and locking the bootloader. I don't want the bootloader to say "re-locked" at the top because that is a dead giveaway that I unlocked. Is there currently no way to go completely stock?
As of now there is no public RUU and without that you won't get completely back to stock.
Sent from my 831C using Tapatalk
You don't need an RUU for your device to "look" stock. Restore that stock nandroid that's floating around, flash stock recovery, and take the OTA.
As long as you're S-OFF, you can change the flag to LOCKED and then go back S-ON.

Basically people are having issues with connection. I'm not going to fully explain this because it is quite complicated and to be honest, I don't even fully understand it. But because this is a tri band phone (sprint spark) it relies on the network to tell it when you switch from different bands and when to switch from an LTE connection back to a 1x connection for voice calls. The phone only has one data transmission path, so it can't be connected to LTE and 1x (voice network) at the same time. It has to be one or the other. That's why you can't use mobile data while in a call. This works perfectly fine when the tower you are connected to has been upgraded and has the correct csfb fallback switches in place. But the problem is, a lot of towers don't. This causes huge problems for spark phones. All spark phones have this issue; the. Samsung Galaxy s5, LG G2,and the Nexus 5. But a lot of people have been having issues with this phone being really bad. Sometimes people can't receive/send texts or calls, and sometimes they can't connect to mobile data at all, no matter where they go. Originally it was thought to be an issue with sprint and what I described earlier, but people noticed that if they swapped out the phone for a new one, the issue went away. This isn't true for everyone, but that solved the issues for a lot of people. The general idea now is that it mainly seemed to affect people that ordered the M8 online early on. It doesn't seem to be affecting the phones bought from stores recently as much. Someone also claimed that the phones were provisioned incorrectly and that was causing it. But nobody really knows. If you are having an issue like I described, I would go back to where you bought it from and tell them you want to exchange it.
Also, if someone notices anything I said was incorrect, please call me out on it. As far as I know it's all correct, but I could easily be wrong.

I don't want to sound like a total idiot, but I guess their no way around it, I haven't used a HTC product since my Hero days, So let me make sure I understand what you are saying, flash my stock rooted nandroid, find a stock recovery zip and flash, then do I used terminal to lock my bootloader, or do I flash another zip? Then where does the OTA come in at? Now after reading this and the rolling of the eyes, I just wanted to make sure I didn't make a mistake, and this will have me back to stock without root ? I will like to thanks in advance for your patients.

Good explanation. On my note 3 I was consistently hitting no less than 10 mbps at my house. On my M8 I was getting 2-20 MBPS at my house, with NO consistency. No issues with calling/texting, however. I recieved my M8 on the 11th (same day as the s5 came out, expecting chaos) and was getting okay signal in my house. Now a few days later it seems someone is pointing a cell phone jammer at me. I lose connection completely, then it goes back to slow speeds, about twice per minute. Same thing with calling and texting though. I REALLY do not want to go through the entire process of going back to stock to ship it back to amazon, so I am hoping it has something to do with sprints towers since I was alright the first few days.

Haha I completely understand the position you are in. I was in that position not too long ago. You do almost exactly what you said. Flash stock rom (NOT stock rooted though) and stock recovery, then lock the bootloader through adb. And that will pretty much return you to stock, but your bootloader will say "re-locked" at the top instead of "locked." So it's obvious that you've unlocked at some point. If everything else is stock, I doubt anyone would question it and you would more than likely be fine, but I like to be extra safe. I know with my previous phone (EVO LTE) if you were s-off, you could run a tool that made it say "locked" instead of "re-locked" so I would imagine you could do the same for this phone, but as far as I'm aware, you can't yet. I guess we'll just have to wait for a dev to make a tool for that.

I am so dissapointed, but I dont know wether to blame HTC or Sprint. No matter where I am I get the same crap, I went a few miles away where I know the heart of sprint spark connection lies, but still get really bad connection. Could you point me in direction of a link or location where I can find a stock M8 rom and recovery, trying to get back to Stock so I can return phone to Sprint for another M8 after having the problem with my Spark and signal that everyone else is having. Sprint is trying to get their network working properly, but it's not an easy task. The upgrades have to be done to each tower and that takes time. Not only does Sprint have to have the work done, they have to get a permit for each tower first. Some places that is easy enough, but some other places the government is very strict with work permits and it takes forever to get one. It could quite possibly be an issue with your phone, but it could also be an issue with the network. If you get a replacement and still experience issues, it's the network. If the issue goes away, then it was the phone. Unfortunately, I'm most cases it's really hard to tell until you get the replacement. But in your case, I'm almost certain it's an issue with your phone.

Some of you may remember me havin some complaints about my n5 droppin searvice randomly. I was about to get an rma. Im glad i didnt.
I have tried everything to fix it. So last resort is to rma the device.
So, i was waitin in a tmobile store to pay my bill, and i started playin with a display nexus 5. Luckily, the phone was hooked up to their LTE network. So i got an idea and started a download. Low and behold guess what happens. The same EXACT thing my phone does.
And out of all irony the song "I want my money back, I want my money back" is playing in the store.
I dont think an rma is the solution here.

Never ever had this problem. Guess its because of your service provider. In your location the infrastructure of your service provider is propably not as good as you think.
as well as im not having such an issue with tmobile. but im in nyc, and tmobiles network in the area is fairly new and improved.
Hmm... I get a great lte signal all around town. Mostly 43mbps, when it works. I heard the n5 uses some new "low power lte" or somethin. Maybe they have issues with it here?

not really low power lte, but the newer lte radio that the n5 uses does do much better on battery than previous versions of lte.
I'm in Arizona with tmobile and I sometimes have my network drop maybe at least once a day.
No network drops in Vegas...
Definitely it's a N5 issue. I'm in Europe and I have this problem. I remember reading in forums about that when I bought my phone. As long as I was on 4.4.2 I never had a single issue. After updating on 4.4.4 I have network issues few times a day.

its called a network issue for a reason. its an issue with your network, not the device. i didnt have issues on on 44, 441, 442, 443, nor 444. network issues relate to your network.
Well if it is my network, how come when i lose the network, sometimes the phone will also reboot. Dont think thw network would cause that

just as your phone shouldnt be rebooting. so your "network issue" can be related to whatever you are running on your phone. that would be on the personal level, so id check into what i am running. my nexus 5 has never had an issue with rebooting.

Reflash stock firmware, clean. Go a few days without any apps installed. This will show if its phone/network related, or app related.
If it still acts up on fresh install. Try someone elses Sim, preferably on another network. If it's OK... Then you've narrowed it down to your Sim, or again, you're network.
Process of elimination. ?
Same thing happens to me on AT&T. It has happened with 3 separate N5s and doesn't happen with my Moto X. Yeah, it's an N5 problem. The radio in this phone is garbage.

Even the display model with nothing on it did the same exact thing. Maybe its a flawed design, where some phones have this problem, and others dont. Stock. Every N5 I have owned has been stock, and all have had network dropping issues, and all have had difficulty maintaining LTE. No problems with my Moto X, none with my iPhone 5s when I had it, and none with any other LTE phone I've owned while on AT&T. Just the Nexus 5.

i think that you are the one actually not seeing the issue. your phone drops data, you watched the store phone lose data as well. your phone and that other is on the same network. it doesnt sound like a phone issue, it sounds as if its your local network that is having the issue.
It's a radio/network combo issue. I never had drops on the 4.4 radio. Since 4.4.1 and above, i get these network drops on a daily basis.
Go to your battery stats, look for cell standby and check the "time without a signal" percentage. I usually have 10-11% of my uptime.
I got fed up with this crap, so reverted earlier today to the 4.4 radio (1.0.25.0.17). Still too early to make any judgment.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Seems to be only when I'm on mobile and from T-Mobile users only.
Yeah, I am.. Its getting annoying now.. I thought it was because I side loaded the update but then today I flashed the whole system images and still.. I do want to try and call T-Mobile and restart the network for me. Maybe that will help..

Edit
I am getting doubles from Verizon and T-Mobile users.

I called a T-Mobile rep not sure I can trust them as far as I can throw them. I was informed that it is a Network issue plaguing random people and multiple devices including iPhones as well. So we will see how true that hold going to download and reflash the 5.0.1 rom and see if it works.

I am having the same issues and I just got this 2 days ago and now. Some people not everyone is "double" texting me its very annoying. On 5.1 I might flash back to a previous rom if I have to. I know Sprint users were having this issues but it wasn't an issue until 5.1 at least I didn't have it long enough to notice.

Did the T-Mobile rep say that we had to do anything or they would fix on the back end for everyone?

There was nothing that we needed to do. Keep in mind it could have just been the same stuff we get fed to get us off the phone. So take it with a grain of salt. Phone is almost charged back up to 50% so I will flash 5.0.1 to see if thats the issue when its charged enough.
This is a random issue of T-Mobile. I've experienced it from time to time. Sometimes I get doubles, doesn't matter whom the carrier, or I'm told I'm sending doubles. Their customer service either plays dumb, or says to do random things that won't help the fix in any way.

Been with T-Mobile for over 2 Years, With my Nexus 4 5 and now 6 and am I not sure if its T-Mobile or my new Nexus 6 but on my other devices though multiple stock roms and custom roms I have never had the issue I am having today.
Thanks for creating this thread, I am also experiencing this on T-Mobile.
So update again. I know I am posting a lot sorry for that. So still on 5.1 no re-flashing yet and the duplicate texts seemed to have stopped.
Edit
Annnnnd its back fml
Thank you for the thread. Issue started right after I fastboot flashed 5.1. Tried clearing data on both Google messenger and Hangouts but issue persists. Very annoying. I'll keep trying stuff.

And it is indeed from other T-Mobile users only
Flashed back to 5.0.1 Not sure if its a timing issue but no duplicates yet
Guys would you mind testing something for me?When I uncheck advanced LTE services in the cellular network services the issue seems to stop.
I am still on 5.0.1 with updated radio/bootloader and I m experiencing the same thing.
Test 1-5 are done without advanced LTE services
Test 6 and 9 with LTE advanced on
Has anyone tried 5.1 with the older radio? Maybe the new is causing an issue.

I unchecked Enhanced 4G LTE, and the duplicate SMS issue stops. Confirmed it via self-SMS and SMS between me and a friend who's running 5.1 on a Nexus 5.
Yeah the issue disappeared for me as well. I wonder if it's a Google mistake, or if we need additional files from T-Mobile.
Also getting duplicate texts here on T-Mobile. Does anyone know if restoring back to my stock backup would resolve? Or can I restore that, and then flash the old radio/bootloader?
Try it.. It wouldn't hurt

I'm getting duplicate texts too. Seems like they are only from people with iPhones.

So for the past month probably longer I have been dealing with bizarre WiFi issues. I went back to stock unrooted and relocked bootloader that fixed nothing. I've tried at least 5 different wifis with no change. PROBLEMS 1.Whenever I'm on WiFi I do not receive any notifications except SMS. 2. When I have WiFi on everything loads really slow and on social media apps etc pictures don't load at all.
Any ideas or suggestions?

1. If you use WiFi repeaters? Switch off.
2. Reset your wifi router from time to time.
3. Install WiFi analyzer and check if your signal is blown away by other signals on the same channel. If so change the channel in your router.

I hope you have proof of guarantee. Go to the company where you bought the phone.

I had the same issue with my Verizion Nexus 6. The wifi was always stuck between on and off, and wouldn't work. It started out intermittent, and got worse until it would never connect.
Verizion gave me grief and wanted to give me a used phone on unknown condition, so I contacted Motorolla about it, and they were happy to send me a replacement phone for the cost of shipping ($25ish?) While it was not new, they said it may been used up to 7 days, and then factory inspected for issues, which is more than the Verizon phone i got from them "new" that must have shipped with a Spanish recovery on it.
Moral of the story contact Motorola if it is in warranty and after basic troubleshooting you can get a replacment phone within a week.
