[Q] Sending rooted Bionic back to Verizon, will hard reset unroot? - Motorola Droid Bionic

I've been using a defective Bionic since launch now. The last OTA update completely destroyed my data connection, to the point of it becoming so unreliable that I need a new one. After talking to Tier 2 Tech Support, they are sending a Bionic and want mine back. It is rooted and has safestrap with Eclipse 3.0 on the safe side. How can I be sure that Verizon will not know that I rooted it?

Only thing you can do is to reflash .902/.905. A hard reset isn't going to wipe the rom, just your user data.

Even if I didn't flash ICS? This will remove root and my entire safestrap system?

I just sent one back that was rooted and on ICS. I didn't bother to wipe anything before sending back. I just pulled my cards and put it in the box.
Though i did tell Verizon that i flashed it i don't remember mentioning root. Does anyone really think they would pursue money on a phone with known data failure units? My problem was that i couldn't get/keep 4G.

If it was any carrier other than big red, they probably couldnt care less, but big red is evil and they are all about money! If there is a way for them to charge you for something, they will!
But like previous poster said he sent his back, if they havent said anything by now, then they wont. They probably didnt even check, all they are going to do is reflash .905 on it, then remarket it as a refurb.

Uninstall safe strap and use stock recovery to flash an update zip of whatever ota you told them messed up your data. You need to make sure you're in whatever version you told them because they do record notes for every open case. It seems to me that your phone is working well enough for you to use an unroot method that is posted here on xda

Anyone had any luck with the data signal actually being better on the "new" device? I'm in the same boat, sending my rooted, but still stock Bionic back tomorrow, but not sure if exchanging one unit for another with the same hardware/firmware will really make a difference??
There were some earlier posts on AC about folks getting RAZRs in exchange for their BIONIC's.

In my area I don't get 4G. Only 3G and the signal is pretty bad near my work which is in the sticks. However when I travel to a 4G area I have no issues with my signal. Despite every phone using the same hardware/firmware there could be issues with the hardware itself that might be bad. Another phone may or may not fix the issue. It's almost like saying similar cars are going to perform the same. It will vary from batch to batch. There's no telling if you're not getting a phone with the same bad radio hardware or maybe it's not your phone and the actual signal coming from the tower. Verizon/Motorola isn't going to fess up to anything and unfortunately we're their pawns. It's always the blaming game for them. The RAZR and Bionic both share the same hardware but different firmwares. However the RAZR uses a processor that can handle the 1.2ghz speeds while the Bionic may or may not reach those speeds. The processor in the RAZR are stress tested to 1.2ghz while the ones in the Bionic were only tested @ 1ghz. I dunno how the radio hardwares are tested but some may be able to handle certain frequencies and some not. I have no clue about the deviances in the radio frequencies but is it possible my towers are different from your towers? I dunno that's not my area of expertise.

Dont worry about it being rooted i sent back 2 stratospheres with root and a custom boot screen and 2 droid 4 with the leak ics with root i really dont think they look at them

[Q] Buying Droid Bionic tomorrow, can I root the device?

Verizon 4G LTE allows speeds of 10Mbps which is insane, Tmobile has around 3Mbps
Should I chose Droid Bionic or go to Sprint and chose Samsung Galaxy S II?
I like the idea of the Bionic having better resolution
I really like the idea of a device as fast as the HTC Thunderbolt but with dual CPU
Any advice?
It is supposedly already rooted somewhere. But personally I avoid Motorola blur enabled phones unless your whole intent is to have problem with crashing or resetting. I would wait to buy it until a stable nonBLUR ROM is out like cyanogen. I like Moto hardware, but supporting Moto software just plain sucks.

The droid 3 method works. http://www.psouza4.com/droid3/
The other thread here offering a bounty for the first root has confirmation.
One caveat. I do not believe there is a way to back out of root, yet, for the Bionic.

Just removing su and Superuser.apk should be enough to back out of root for now.
I'm leaving now, hope to get the phone soon
Well here's my 2 cents. I just moved to Southern California and was on Sprint previously (with the Evo rooted) which sucks where I live so I went over and switched to T-mobile (with the Sensation stock). T-mobile wasn't cutting it for me either. Was on it for 29 days and returned it. Now I'm on Verizon with the LG revolution that I've had for a few days (worst phone I've used) till I pick up my bionic today. Verizons service and coverage is bad ass totally worth it. All I gotta say.

B, doesn't the one-click process do more than just add in su and superuser.apk? I thought that there are other changes within the system files. I could be wrong.
I'll be waiting for an SBF, myself.
Doesn't look like it, it uses an exploit, which was already in the original code and doesn't do any system modifications besides adding files. Removing them will get rid of root.
Of course, if we had an SBF, it'd be easier.

FWIW, my wife has a Droid X and it's been as stable, if not more so, than my Incredible. She has never had an issue with "crashing or resetting".
I got my Bionic at 8am this morning and the root method for the droid 3 worked perfectly. The longest part was waiting for the motorola drivers to install. I am now rooted and have made a backup of my apps with Titanium. I will be removing the Verizon installed bloat next. Until there is a recovery and way to restore I will leave all the blur and phone files alone though...

At first it did not see any of my stuff either at first. I'm not even really sure what I did beyond rebooting, but it worked just fine. Mine is rooted and all apps are back up and running. next step is to get rid of all the crapware.

Anyone know how to go back to stock from the .893 update?

Long story short the vzw rep told me to install the leaked update saying it would fix my 3g connection problems (which it didn't) and now I'm stuck with no root. I would like to either get root or go back to stock if thats possible. Is it possible to use the sbf and go back? Any help would be appreciated.

Won't work.
If I'm not mistaken. There is no way to go back to release stock. Since that update updated the bootloader / or kernel, FXZ ( SPF ) which ever you perfer to call it won't work since the updated bootloader.
sucks i know.
I have never heard about a vzw rep telling you to install something that is leaked. (most of the time voids warranty.)
About the only thing i can tell you is to try to get a hold of @p3droid on twitter and try to get a root method from him for test. but that may be unlikely but could be worth it if your willing to test stuff for him.
Anyway, Good luck with the phone.
I hope you get it

A Verizon rep telling you to install a leak... that reminds me of the Verizon store near me. They're (almost) all a bunch of idiots, at least every one I've encountered in there was. One guy tried to tack a note onto my account saying that my insurance should be removed since I "rooted" my phone, when I actually just had go launcher running. wasn't actually rooted at that time, I know better than to tread in their turf with the Superuser hanging around.
Couldn't he just apply the FXZ image since that's basically a whole phone image?

Ya dude they aren't the brightest but I couldn't get data on 3g at all the airplane toggle, factory reset, and sbf didn't fix it so I took the plunge to the latest leak with no success. When you call the tech people up on the phone they read from a script and its like dude I already factory reset a battery pulls not gonna fix it.....
For what it's worth, I've been seeing some issues with 3G lately myself, but I'm in an area where we have had LTE for less than two weeks. Every time I use 3G only, I get network issues as well, so my guess was it's just Verizon doing backend things and ****ing with the network.

I also had a vzw dummy say my DROIDX was rooted too cuz I was running LPP. I just looked at him and said... are you serious. I think we all know not to take a phone into vzw while rooted. Well the update from Moto is suppose to fix this issues, so Verizon may make you wait til you receive the update before looking into swapping a phone for you.
The Restart Connections app from the market doesn't work for you? It works for me about 90% of the time when I lose my signal. Rarely I will have to reboot to get signal back.

I haven't tried that, ill try it but they promised me an update by early nov, and they've given me already 2 months of free service. I dont care about getting free service id rather pay instead of the hassle... Sucks I paid full retail on launch day and have only had problems..

I take it you can only complain to Verizon if you bought the device from them.

Yea Verizon definitely knows of the problems. Its common. Verizon will eventually offer you a new phone but it may not be something you want. If the problem isn't fixed after the update and they persist they will probably offer some better replacements.
I don't really have a big problem with connection but it is there. Some days it doesn't happen at all. Someone on another forum said they received an update from Moto already, so hopefully they start rolling out soon.

EDIT: Just wanted to add that is the FIRST time I've ever done a warranty replacement in 6 years with Verizon. Wasn't terribly difficult...

If you just got another Bionic, your problems aren't going to go away. I got my warranty replacement last week; same issues.
They did offer me a new phone; anything but the Razr. Considering I not only bought the phone at launch, but bought a couple hundred dollars in accessories...I want the phone to work as advertised; not a new phone.
Well the week before Thanksgiving I was actually sucessful of having the store giving me an actual off the floor replacement. Up until that time I have taken my phone into 4 different corporate stores in and around Cincinnati and each time The associate looked at the phone and just ordered their "certified like new" replacement shipped to my home. Now I want you all to know these "certified" units were nothing more than returns to VZW from others that are experiencing the same thing. I went out of my way to take the phone into the closest store when I experienced either the loss of data or the BSOD situation.
This time I tried something different which got me a brand new phone..not sure what pushed them over the edge though....On the 23rd of November I got the dead BSOD and immediately took the phone back to the origional store which I purchased it on the 12th of September and cornered my origional salesperson explaining that I have had four replacements...I sternly request for him to correct this problem WITHOUT pulling the battery....The store was moderately heavy with customers who had a ear tuned to my complaint. He was insistant that he had to pull the battery after plugging in a charger...I loudly told him to stop and demanded for customer service to be put on the line because I insisted pulling the battery was going to do nothing more than set me up with a return trip. He told me that all customer service was going to do is issue out another "certified" unit...Loudly I protested that this has to come to an end because all of the screen protectors he had sold me during the origional purchase are now gone and the battery life is degrading fast due to the constantly seeking for data problem. Everybody knows VZW does not ship a new battery or battery door with these "certified" units ( of course). As I would not budge on the "certified" route because my battery and battery door was showing signs of premature wear...the manager stepped in and allowed me to turn in my unit for another right out of the box...printed out a receipt for the return full price and then gave me a new receipt with the same price but with the november date. He told the associate to mark the unit defective screen out of box. Now he didnt allow me to have the new battery or door BUT I got a new unit which I am happy to report has not had a hiccup since...knock on wood. BUT BE FOR WARNED...if you are sucessful at getting a off the floor exchange...check your account because the billing dept of VZW thinks this is a upgrade and will sneak a updated contract date in on your account....It took two calls into customer service to explain to them this was not an upgrade and after they tell you that it has been noted....TAKE THE TIME to check online your contract date is put back to the origional date.
After a little bit of work I am a happy Bionic VZW customer
Have you guys tried the SIM pull trick? My Bionic has not had a data problem since. I did this over a month ago.
1) turn off Bionic and pull SIM
2) power on the bionic and open phone. It will state the SIM is missing.
3)turn off the Bionic and insert SIM
You will need a pair of fine tweezers for this.

This won't help if you need the 4G throughput (for hotspot, etc), but my data connection is rock solid on the go if i choose CDMA Only mode under Mobile Networks.
I've taken to changing to LTE Only mode in the field testing interface (##PROGRAM) when I need to use LTE throughput for hotspot, and that, too, is rock solid. The problem seems to occur for me only when it's switching between CDMA and LTE.

Pulling the SIM did nothing for me, unfortunately. I'd demand a new (and different) phone, but I spent about $150 on accessories and don't want to unload those for pennies on FleaBay.

Verizon tech just told me to ROOT my phone

Thought this was very odd. I was on phone with tech support cuz my phone bricked itself today. not sure how or why i wasnt even using it. The tech sending me replacement suggested i root my phone because it would help a lot with the random reboot issue i originally had called ina bout last week.
Proceeded to tell me that Verizon does not care if you root as long as the factory data reset will work as intended for them.
Didnt know if this information was well known or not just thought it was odd that a tech tell me to root my phone.

That's very odd. I used to work for AT&T and they said we could loose our job of we told a customer to change the core software on any device. Strange indeed.

yeah that is what he was saying (he was telling me how he rooted his and was using cwm as well) but he said that verizons policy is that as long as the "STOCK" factory reset takes it back to original condition then they will not persue anything any further. (which btw is stock zv7 right now) the new phone they shipped me doesnt have zv8 yet either.
who knows i just thought i would elaborate what the tech told me.
the phone i sending back had CWM on it and wouldnt boot or charge battery. so i manage to get it into emergency mode and left it for about 18 hours which gave me almost 35 % charge( seems very low) but i managed to push the zv7 tot and revivie it to send back. YAY
Vzn and root
There is a lot of misconception about rooting, I used to co manage a vzn reseller.
If you go to the android market there are root apps all over the place, if rooting voided any warranties there would be huge liability issues for legal software developers and customer uproar. Plus the hardware OEMS would not alllow it to be sold legally. Rooting is a software change you are not hacking or modifying hardware here. Plus android is marketed as open source unlike iphone OS.

RevoRooting
Verizon might also be less persnickety about rooting on the Revolution because it's on its way out. I know Verizon was much pickier about my Droid 1 when it was new than they were a few months ago.

This was only a 1 year term on that ruling. it is coming up again soon whether or not it is viable to do it or not.

Oh man, I totally did that when I had gotten my Revo. Fortunately Thecubed was around, and he took control of my computer and fixed the phone. It was awesome. I recall the battery taking for ever to recharge. We had to wait 30 minutes before we could try anything. We needed enough juice to run ADB and push stuff to my phone.
yep what the verizon sales/ tech guy said
walked into verizon today. my phone messed up but thats another thread... and he literally said verizon does not care if u root your phone... didnt say as long as or anything else. just said they dont care. so yeah feel free to ask them yourself.

Yeah they Dont care, but brick one & try to get a replacement in warranty if you do.
Last month i made a boo boo installing Clockwork Mod and locked it up.
While they were very helpful, nice, and understanding; And a couple weeks later when I came in with my repaired phone (thanks to un_brickable) were more than happy to get me back online with a new sim card (I had to use my sons old HTC Incredible until I FINALLY found the fix). The warranty is now VOID and I was NOT going to get a new one.
I also dropped the protection plan & bought a "development" Revolution off of E-bay. So if i blow one up i can be back up & running in a couple minutes. cheaper in the long run.
Sometimes being Honest doesnt pay off. But in the end I have a BETTER phone for the experience. (2 of them actually)

Because an exploit is just that, something that can be used maliciously. They aren't trying to screw with rooted people, they are patching security holes.

any vulnerable area in the code HAS to be patched because the first people we blame for the phone getting hacked, is Verizon, for not having the security it should have in the software

Rooted phones are a liability...
For Verizon. The reps don't care (of course), but the main company does. It does void your warranty if they find out about it.
See, the tethering apps, Google navigation, Google voice, etc, etc are all lost profits. This is especially true with this phone, where in stock form, they nickel and dime you for "Verizon Navigation," "Verizon Voicemail," and "Verizon Tether."
Another negative impact for them is the number of returns the early rooting and experimentation process creates. I can remember the number of "forced failures" and nit-picking occurring on my old Eris when people were flashing the leaked upgrade that permanently disabled root, just so they had an excuse to return them.
The Verizon reps are "next-to-minimum-wage," 18-30 year old employees who could give a rat's patootie what you do with your phone. The RMA techs, on the other hand, may not be so forgiving.

[Q] Return Completely Stock

So I recently bought my M8 and would love to root, but there have been a lot of reports of issues with data because of csfb issues. I have not had this issue, but if I do start having it or any other issue, I want to be able to go back to stock and return my phone to Sprint. I am currently in the 14 day return period and I have insurance. On my last phone, I was rooted and was having issues with my battery and went back to Sprint, and the guy there told me that he could not work on it if it was rooted. He was a pretty cool guy, but he made is sound like it was a really big deal that I rooted. I have searched on all the Sprint M8 threads and I can't find a way to go back to stock. And I mean completely stock. Finding a stock ROM, Kernel, and recovery is easy, but I am not sure about s-on and locking the bootloader. I don't want the bootloader to say "re-locked" at the top because that is a dead giveaway that I unlocked. Is there currently no way to go completely stock?
As of now there is no public RUU and without that you won't get completely back to stock.
Sent from my 831C using Tapatalk
You don't need an RUU for your device to "look" stock. Restore that stock nandroid that's floating around, flash stock recovery, and take the OTA.
As long as you're S-OFF, you can change the flag to LOCKED and then go back S-ON.

Basically people are having issues with connection. I'm not going to fully explain this because it is quite complicated and to be honest, I don't even fully understand it. But because this is a tri band phone (sprint spark) it relies on the network to tell it when you switch from different bands and when to switch from an LTE connection back to a 1x connection for voice calls. The phone only has one data transmission path, so it can't be connected to LTE and 1x (voice network) at the same time. It has to be one or the other. That's why you can't use mobile data while in a call. This works perfectly fine when the tower you are connected to has been upgraded and has the correct csfb fallback switches in place. But the problem is, a lot of towers don't. This causes huge problems for spark phones. All spark phones have this issue; the. Samsung Galaxy s5, LG G2,and the Nexus 5. But a lot of people have been having issues with this phone being really bad. Sometimes people can't receive/send texts or calls, and sometimes they can't connect to mobile data at all, no matter where they go. Originally it was thought to be an issue with sprint and what I described earlier, but people noticed that if they swapped out the phone for a new one, the issue went away. This isn't true for everyone, but that solved the issues for a lot of people. The general idea now is that it mainly seemed to affect people that ordered the M8 online early on. It doesn't seem to be affecting the phones bought from stores recently as much. Someone also claimed that the phones were provisioned incorrectly and that was causing it. But nobody really knows. If you are having an issue like I described, I would go back to where you bought it from and tell them you want to exchange it.
Also, if someone notices anything I said was incorrect, please call me out on it. As far as I know it's all correct, but I could easily be wrong.

I don't want to sound like a total idiot, but I guess their no way around it, I haven't used a HTC product since my Hero days, So let me make sure I understand what you are saying, flash my stock rooted nandroid, find a stock recovery zip and flash, then do I used terminal to lock my bootloader, or do I flash another zip? Then where does the OTA come in at? Now after reading this and the rolling of the eyes, I just wanted to make sure I didn't make a mistake, and this will have me back to stock without root ? I will like to thanks in advance for your patients.

Good explanation. On my note 3 I was consistently hitting no less than 10 mbps at my house. On my M8 I was getting 2-20 MBPS at my house, with NO consistency. No issues with calling/texting, however. I recieved my M8 on the 11th (same day as the s5 came out, expecting chaos) and was getting okay signal in my house. Now a few days later it seems someone is pointing a cell phone jammer at me. I lose connection completely, then it goes back to slow speeds, about twice per minute. Same thing with calling and texting though. I REALLY do not want to go through the entire process of going back to stock to ship it back to amazon, so I am hoping it has something to do with sprints towers since I was alright the first few days.

Haha I completely understand the position you are in. I was in that position not too long ago. You do almost exactly what you said. Flash stock rom (NOT stock rooted though) and stock recovery, then lock the bootloader through adb. And that will pretty much return you to stock, but your bootloader will say "re-locked" at the top instead of "locked." So it's obvious that you've unlocked at some point. If everything else is stock, I doubt anyone would question it and you would more than likely be fine, but I like to be extra safe. I know with my previous phone (EVO LTE) if you were s-off, you could run a tool that made it say "locked" instead of "re-locked" so I would imagine you could do the same for this phone, but as far as I'm aware, you can't yet. I guess we'll just have to wait for a dev to make a tool for that.

Yes you can. I said that in my explanation. There's no tool, it's a procedure.
And this procedure properly sets the flag rather than masking it.

I am so dissapointed, but I dont know wether to blame HTC or Sprint. No matter where I am I get the same crap, I went a few miles away where I know the heart of sprint spark connection lies, but still get really bad connection. I'm just going to return it to amazon, then buy it from best buy so if this crap happens I don't waste days and days of getting it shipped back to amazon.

How does one get the stock nandroid? I have also searched and cant find it. Then I just flash it like a normal rom? I need to ship this back to amazon, I dont think they will check the bootloader and stuff but for sure a rom with missing apps will surely trigger them.
Could you point me in direction of a link or location where I can find a stock M8 rom and recovery, trying to get back to Stock so I can return phone to Sprint for another M8 after having the problem with my Spark and signal that everyone else is having. Plan on using Captain_Throwback method for my Hboot, just need to have the Rom and stock recovery to get this show on the road. Thanks in advance and thanks for your patience dealing with noobs !

Sprint is trying to get their network working properly, but it's not an easy task. The upgrades have to be done to each tower and that takes time. Not only does Sprint have to have the work done, they have to get a permit for each tower first. Some places that is easy enough, but some other places the government is very strict with work permits and it takes forever to get one. It could quite possibly be an issue with your phone, but it could also be an issue with the network. If you get a replacement and still experience issues, it's the network. If the issue goes away, then it was the phone. Unfortunately, I'm most cases it's really hard to tell until you get the replacement. But in your case, I'm almost certain it's an issue with your phone.
