Need some advice on the next step. My moto x wifi and Bluetooth stopped working all together. This started about a month ago and the wifi would stop and start working interminently.
At first the wifi would turn on but wouldn't connect to the router, it would just save but no sign of connecting. And then i flashed all the latest (5.1) official components of the Verizon Rom including the modems (basically followed the exact steps from a thread here) as it is a xt1060. Still had the same issue so i switched to another router and it worked but would disconnect at times.
A month later and the wifi/Bluetooth has stopped working all together. When trying to switch wifi to ON position it would slide right back to OFF. I tried alot of different roms including the officiak CM but no resolve.
I am coming to a conclusion that somehow the wifi module is fried but if you know something i don't then please help before i visit a technician who's gonna charge me the same as the cost of this device.[emoji16]
Appreciate any help guys.

That's a hardware failure. The symptom of the radio, whether BT or WiFi, turning itself back off is definitive.
Sorry.

So I'm guessing that would require a replacement of the entire logic board. Or is their a way for the tech to just replace the wifi/Bluetooth chip?

Sorry, don't actually know how they are put together. But, yes, I would guess it's soldered onto the mainboard.
This morning same thing had happened to my xt1052 device, had same symptoms over the last few months as described by OP, also tried latest stock firmware hoping it would revive this device but it wasn't happening. Then I got all excited after stumbling upon this thread but quickly realised that nothing was missing in my /persist folder which had proper file sizes . Very disappointed indeed.

Even though she doesn't remember, I'm pretty sure my wife dropped her nexus one. Now i gotta fix it.
PROBLEM:
1. Camera doesnt work now. It force closes or just shows black screen forever. The camera flash doesn't work either.
2. After hanging up a call, the screen goes black.
3. Extremely weak WIFI reception.
4. Burning through a serious amount of battery power and the antenna gets really hot.
STEPS TAKEN SO FAR:
1. Thought it might be software related so I installed CM7 and the battery issue got better but thats it.
2. Cracked the phone open and checked to make sure nothing got jarred loose during an earthly impact. The camera unit was a bit cocked but it still didn't fix it. Everything else seemed fine.
ALL OUT OF OPTIONS. ANY IDEAS WELCOME. At this point I am prepared to start swapping parts. Any recommendations?

Had the same issue. Send it in to htc, they will fix it for you. PS: Don't worry about the bootloader.
Well thats the other problem. I cant ship the phone because it has a lithium battery in it. I know, sounds wierd. Its a long story but basically I have to attempt a repair myself hence why I'm looking for suggestions.

I would start by replacing the board that the camera Is on. I think it is called the logic board or something similar

Hi,
The current problem is that my phone signal keeps cycling between full bars and no bars, or is not connected to a service. Checking the phone signal strength, it seems to be hover around -100 db or so.
So I did a search on the closest thing that I could find was this one.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1894486
So what I have done is the following:
1. Had an issue with charging and holding a charge when upgraded to Xperia X ed rom
2. Did some research and figured the easiest option would be to reload the first ROM and check if the issue still exists
3. Reloaded nandroid backup to the original, same issue
4. Cleaned out the USB port using some thick paper, rubbing alcohol, compressed gas and small vacuum, same issue
5. Did some more research, figured that it would be easy enough to replace the USB board, so replaced that (reconnecting the antenna)
6. Turned on phone and used the first custom rom on there, everything seemed to work fine but I didn't check the signal strenght
7. Upgraded to SweetROM v10, only then noticed the signal issue, unscrewed the back and checked the antenna connection, seems solid
8. Tried to use it for a day and it's really bad, most of the time inside, I can't get any signal but outside, I normally get full bars
9. Did some more research, remembered something about modems, changed the modem from XXLT3 to XXLSO, just incase it was that, still the same signal issue
So wondering if anyone can help me with the next steps. I figure I am gonna tinker around with it a little, to see if it is a software thing. I figure what I will do is the following:
1. restore back to nandroid - check the signal issue
2. if still there, maybe try a stock ROM
Maybe take the cover off again and check the antenna cable, could have damaged it pulling it back in the first time, however, it doesn't make sense that signal strength would not change that much but the reported signal would.
Any help would be great.
Anyone with any ideas?
Where did you source the replacement part, is it stock samsung and are you sure it's the same revision?

i have totally in same position. i have damaged usb port, couldn't charge. then buy an 5$ usb bord that same rev with original one. But reception is totally unstable. Especially when driving, reception have (nearly) always zero bar. And inside building reception is half of original part and also unstable. Tried most of what u tried, no luck. i think i have to repair original one(i opened inside the phone, all usb port pins broken from thecorner point. Just have to replace usb port )

So long as you use a stock replacement part and not the eBay alternatives, you'll be fine. These problems occur with the imitation parts.

I can confirm this issue started with my note recently after a ROM flash possibly 2 months ago. I tinkered around just like the OP and I can confirm with a high level of certainty that it isn't a hardware issue. Reverting to stock didn't help much, but using the same ICS modem with which the phone initially came with made the Wi-Fi more stable. However, those spontaneous disconnections are still happening, and with them the phone lags and freezes most of the time. I replaced the USB board with a genuine one from broken screen old note. Everything seems functional apart from the intermittent yet frequent Wi-Fi drop outs. I'd love insight into this matter too.
Added: Wi-Fi just disconnected and reconnected while typing this post by the way.

Nope. That's hardware issue,at least ours are. if i use original board no problem occurs(except no charging couse of broken pins), then if i use new usb board problem occurs about gsm reception that explained above. I think your problem(wifi) and our's(phone signal) isn't same.

@ nokiamodeln91 - thanks for the tip, will be trying that. I have done some asking around and I think that I might have an alternative but will need to test it out this weekend.
@ juliobahar - sorry, my wifi signal is strong and constant. By phone reception I mean carrier signal. I have done a fair bit of research on this since logging this question and 99% of it points to hardware issues. I have gotten some new software to track carrier signal via map location (hope this will be able to give me a little more insight into it's performance) and it just seems to be weak (i.e. either a connection isn't quite touching or it just isn't up to scratch) so that when indoors, it just doesn't have the juice to receive.
@ maktama - yes, it is almost certain that it is a hardware issue.
any further updates on this issue? i damaged my usb port a few weeks back and ordered a replacement from amazon ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B009X6BGDM/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 )
i replaced it following a guide on youtube and initially everything seemed to be fine. i could charge again, signal SEEMED fine, and even my mhl adapter worked and i could view the phone display on my tv, so i binned the old usb module.
since then though i've noticed some serious problems with my signal. sometimes (though not all the time) my signal strength drops off terribly indoors. even in the car my strength can go from full bars outside the window to 0 bars in the car, especially if i have my charger plugged in. it's very inconsistent though, in some places i've noticed very little change to signal strength. wifi seems fine though and outdoor use appears to be as good as it ever was!
is there any point flashing another modem or even completely reflashing my phone (i'm running a fully stock rom though i am rooted) or is this definitely a hardware issue that can only be resolved with a new board? i'm due a new phone in february anyway but it's a bit of a pain not being able to rely on having a signal even when i know i should have one
There has been lot of similar issues replacing the usb module from sellers other than Samsung service. May be the antenna connection was not made properly. Open it up again and do a thorough check. If all Ok, then you might need a genuine part.

sorry i should have said i did re open the phone and checked all my connections.
any idea where a genuine samsung board can be bought, and is the board revision really as critical as people say? as i said, i stupidly threw my original board away because i thought the new one was working so have no idea what revision my board was.
Genuine part from the Samsung guys. Most of the time it's Rev 1.0. Yes the Rev is important.

Hello,
the problem I've with this phone is that the wi-fi wont turn on, either the bluetooth.
So I tried different roms, stock 2.3.5, and then cm10.1.2 stable, and the same issue.
The last thing I tried was a simple one-click odin installation consisting in a super wipe plus the installation of a stock 2.3.5 firmware.
And here I am, facing the same problem. Actually when I go to "about phone", status, then I see:
Wi-Fi MAC Address: Unavailable
Bluetooth Address: Unavailable
At this point it seems like this is a hardware problem, and for that reason is more than welcome an oppinion in the opposite way

what if my captivate was shipped with a generic non-original battery cover and that's the thing provoking this issue? I'm saying this because battery covers shoud have some little metallic things on the back that improves the wifi, gps and bluetooth, am I right?

Also I found this:
near to the screw that is close to the sd card slot, there should be a copper pin coming out from a tiny hole. Every Captivate has that tiny pin of copper, that should match with a white spot in the back of the battery cover.
Mine doesn't have that tiny pin; there is nothing but a tiny hole in that spot.
So this is what happen when youg get a refurbished Captivate on eBay these days...

I don't think this pin is the problem. Unable to turn on <something> usually means the system did not recognize the module during boot process. As it was mentioned already, Wifi/Blutooth on Captivate works fine with back door removed. Missing part indicates the phone was disassembled and someone attempted to repair something.

I remember reading a thread a year or so ago about a guy who replaced that pin after having problem with his cappy. He had done it by himself though.
I might be wrong but what you suggest would come from the modem and/or kernel which seems to work fine on every other phone that runs CM.
It's a shot in the dark but it's what we got for now if you check what the other guy has tried so far (in the other thread with the same problem). Could be a good idea to ask that other guy if his phone still has the metal golden pin.

I'm not sure either, not very familiar with phone software specifics. I'm a computer guy and in computers missing software controls means device not initialized. Kernel/modem software is fine, but there is something wrong with the hardware. I personally don't believe restoring the pin will fix the issue. On a good Captivate, even with this connection open (back cover removed), wifi/bluetooth works fine. A good repair guy have to take a look here and check all currents/voltages from SoC through amplifiers to antenna. Shooting in the dark is asking for more trouble. On the other hand there is no point to pay for shipping/repairs on a $90 device.

Yes, I will! actually this thread had pointed out some interest, I'm saying this due to the over 200 visits it had in just a few days lol
Back to the topic, this phone definitely was disassembled because it was a refurbished unit bought from a big store on eBay.
This piece of.. hardware, cost me $89 by the way, and the only solution I got from the seller -as I'm overseas now and I can't ship it back without expending lots of money- was to get a refund for the half of the price...
So basically I got this $45 Captivate that only works for:
calls, sms, music, storage & camera
Still, I don't think that $45 is a good price of this piece of... hardware.
And yeah, now I'm convinced that the missing pin of copper it's not related to the wi-fi issue, actually that pins only exist to improve call reception as I was told by the seller.
Therefore, and after flashing many stock and non-stock roms through Odin & cwm respectively, I must conclude that this is a hardware issue.
So I'd like to know if any of you guys would drop me a link of a DIY for disassembling and replacing wi-fi hardware on a captivate, because I've another Captivate with a different issue: usb port broken, so I can take the good parts of both and create a fully working Captivate
let me know
peace

BT/WIFI main logic in inside SoC, can't replace it. There are few external components you may check, but you need oscilloscope, good voltmeter, some special tools and advanced electronics repair knowledge. DIY repair in home conditions is not possible. I can send you the repair manual, if you want. One thing you can do is to repair the USB port on the other Captivate. It is doable, but you still need some equipment like vacuum pump, precise soldering gun, solder wick, good flux, etc.

Hey guys !
I have a problem with my Nexus 6. I'm running stock 5.1.1 unrooted with latest update(48M) and keep getting dropped calls (I only use 3g). It doesn't happen all the time, today I got 4 dropped calls. I'm not quite sure what's the problem. I have the phone for 1 week and I'm not sure if that's a hardware or software problem. (I also had Chroma installed and had the same problem)
Are you guys facing this issue?
Is there any thing I can do?
Thanks !
When I had my Samsung Note 3, I was dropping 7% of my calls according to Verizon. They told me to buy a network extender from them for $150 but that is less than useless. I solved the problem when I bought my Nexus 6 because it is a Motorola phone and supposedly has the best radios. You may live in an area where you have a weak signal. If that is the case, you can live with it or move to a different area. As long as I live here, I will never be anything other than a Motorola phone.

Still sounds carrier related. Moto has best radios out there. Try different radios from other builds. Radios are tower dependent. Sometimes older radios work better for a specific area. Has to do with tower upgrades.

I edited my post. Try different radios and then check the DBM value in settings>about phone>status>sim status. Should be below -105. Any value over that is pushing signal. Will have to be unlocked at a minimum to fastboot flash the radios. To recovery flash radios will need TWRP custom recovery. Root not required.

I've had the same problem several times. No voice, no data randomly. The only thing that has ever fixed it is a factory reset. If you use TWRP it doesn't wipe /media. It seems to happen when I update the image or change kernels, but not every time. Bizarre.

In my case there is no need to restart the phone or reset it. It will go back to normal in max 30 seconds.
Mine generally goes back to normal as well, but I don't like dropping every call I make or take. A factory reset cures the problem until I update the next time.
Just flashed dp3. Will test to see it things got fixed.

I'm curious about this too. I'm on Chroma right now and have dropped calls pretty frequently, which really sucks considering a large portion of my job involves talking on the phone. I've had 4 dropped calls in one short 5 minute conversation and was very frustrating for me and the person on the other end. Any suggestions or solutions would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same issue with my Verizion Nexus 6. The wifi was always stuck between on and off, and wouldn't work. It started out intermittent, and got worse until it would never connect.
Verizion gave me grief and wanted to give me a used phone on unknown condition, so I contacted Motorolla about it, and they were happy to send me a replacement phone for the cost of shipping ($25ish?) While it was not new, they said it may been used up to 7 days, and then factory inspected for issues, which is more than the Verizon phone i got from them "new" that must have shipped with a Spanish recovery on it.
Moral of the story contact Motorola if it is in warranty and after basic troubleshooting you can get a replacment phone within a week.
