Yesterday my phone started acting up:
- Applications started failing
- Couldn't uninstall apps (it acted like they uninstalled, but they were back after reboot)
I tried wiping from recovery mode, but all apps are still there
I've even tried using Odin to do a master clear and reflash to stock, yet all the apps are still there. All the startup apps crash when I restart the phone, including the launcher, so the phone is unusable.
I'm desperate here, as I'm without a phone... any help is greatly appreciated
Ok put the phone in download mode but don't reboot to download mode where you see the yellow droid. Make sure you are at the home screen. Then run Odin then plug the phone in and make sure odin recognizes it. Then hit master clear and the phone will be wiped. Then put it back to download mode, with the yellow droid and then flash back to stock.
That's exactly what I've already done, but I'll try it again
Actually, follow up question; how do I put it into download mode without going to the yellow screen?
Another edit: did you mean to say debugging mode?
Yeah sorry I keep referring to usb debugging as download mode sorry for that.
setting > applications > development > usb debugging
ok, completed the master clear. It stated everything was successful. After the reboot, the phone came back, all apps still installed, and all apps still trying to launch on startup and FC-ing immediately. Going to try the reflash to stock now
Same thing... after master clear and reflashing, everything is still there...
Do a facotry reset from the privacy menu and see how that works if not then reboot into recovery and clear data/cache and see if that does anything. Master clear completely wipes the phone there is nothing on it at all. Can you get into any program to uninstall stuff.
I would take it back and tell them its got a mind of its own.
I've tried all of those things multiple times. When using uninstall programs, the device acts like it's uninstalling, but does it way too quickly and says it's successful. They're still there, though, and after I reboot they show up again.

Ok here is what you do...Menu/settings/sd card and phone storage..scroll to internal storage and unmount sd card...then format sd card...Then reboot in to downlaod mode and reflash with odin 1 click...after it boots up reboot into recovery mode and clear cache and user data...then reboot and you will be good to go...You willl lose all your stuff on your internal storage so back up anything important...
Sadly this didn't do the trick either, and I unmounted/formatted the internal twice for good measure. It's like there's a hardware problem, or the storage is locked out somehow. I gave up earlier today and called in the warranty, so there's a refurb on the way now. I hate to give up, but I think it was the only remaining option
Hello.
I was playing around a bit, and made a bad decision on disabling a sys app, with a root uninstaller app.
Now my phone starts up, but stays on the 'samsung' splash-screen.
My home doesn't seem to get loaded, so its stuck there.
I do, however, get notification sounds from text-messages and push-services.
My phone is rooted, but had no recovery installed, neither did I run busybox.
Not sure wether it runs 4.1.1 or 4.1.2, but I guess 4.1.1 because there's no intern recovery I can activate...
I tried flashing the recovery package with odin, still can't seem to get inside recovery... (Yes I can get into Download Mode)
I tried to reboot into the recovery via adb, but my phone - logically - doesn't respond to those.
Apparently, my USB Debug is not activated also... The phone connects, but I can't even do something with tools like GS3 Mini Toolkit.
Kies doesn't seem to connect either (even when the phone is on)... probably services that don't get started due to a battery saver app...
Long Story Short
Is there a rom & kernel, that can fully wipe my phone, via Odin, cause Download Mode seems to be my only option in recovering my phone.
Or any solutions that you could come up with.. because I already tested so much things,
and it's still stuck on the samsung 'lighting up' logo and a black screen.
The phone is for work & personal use... and I don't have the option to replace it atm.
I really need to get it working again... it was the only smartphone I ever had a decent battery life with (avg. 2.5days)
Thanks in advance!
- Fixed, I got into recovery mode, I forgot to stop pushing the powerbutton... so it rebooted. YAY :highfive:
After my phones battery was fully drained, i kept it for charging and after some time when i tried to restart it
Boot Logo animation appeared, then whole screen gone blank. It just shows the active notification icons and when power button pressed it shows power off option.
I am having the exact same issue. Have you had a luck resolving it?
My phone battery died last night. I plugged my phone in, let it get about 15% charge, then tried to turn it back on. The phone boots like normal, but after the boot animation goes away, the screen is black. Active notifications still seem to work, and I can hold the power button to get the Power Down option. I can boot into the bootloader & access recovery just fine. However, my phone is fully stock (no root, no bootloader unlock, no anything). I can't seem to access ADB when the phone is powered normally (ie, when I'm at this mysterious black screen), but it's possible that USB debugging isn't even enabled.
So far, I've found a few people who've said a full factory reset will fix the problem, but I'm looking for another solution, or at least a way to grab my data before I reset. Since my bootloader's still locked, I can't seem to use fastboot boot to boot into TWRP, and I can't find any other way to access my data to copy it off the phone. I've tried wiping the cache using the stock recovery to no avail. Any suggestions?
I had to factory reset my phone.. There was no other way to solve that issue, no other forum moderator is providing solution. There are many threads regarding this issue. Lets hope next update comes soon fixing this issue.
Hmm, ok, thanks. That's probably what I'll resort to doing. I was hoping to find a way to not lose my data. Or at least get a copy of some of it before resetting...
Me too have tried many things for not losing data, my usb debugging was also enabled. But pc didnt recognized any device. There was one article regarding recovering data after factory reset but you need to root your device after u reset ur device. Then you can recover data with DrFone data recovery or Es android recovery. I avoided it because i dont want to lose my warranty.
Moto X 2014: unrooted with bootloader unlocked. It's running Stock 5.1 and I haven't messed with anything on it. I gave it to my Dad after a few months of using it, so I factory reset it and gave it to him, 2 weeks later he tells me it has stopped working. It boots up normally, but from then on it is black, I can access minor parts of the OS such as the power off menu, the camera (by shaking) and Moto Display, but everything else doesn't work. I have never seen anything like this before, and I am well accustomed to flashing custom ROMs and rooting Android. If it comes down to it I will factory reset it or flash stock, but I can't even plug it into my PC and retrieve any files. Anyone have any idea whats gone wrong?
I have attached a video demonstrating what's happened to help diagnose the problem.

If you search the forum here for "black screen" it has happened to other people as well on stock 5.1. Supposedly the fix is a factory reset.

Ok, It was just really surprising thats all. I will factory reset then. Thanks
I am having the exact same issue. Have you had a luck resolving it short of a factory reset?

Unfortunately I couldn't retreive any data from the phone, I can confirm however that a factory reset does fix the issue. The Android automatic backup does work in the broken state so I did manage to restore my settings and apps. But the internal sd card was wiped upon factory reseting. Just an idea of the top of my head: Try running adb backup and see if that works, and then unlocking the bootloader, flashing twrp, restoring the backup, and finally transfering the internal sd card data to a mounted drive using twrp. Thats just a stab in the dark and i dont have the phone on me to test it. Give it a try and lets hope Motorola will fix this bug soon.
Ok, thanks. I did try adb backup, but adb won't recognize the device when it's "booted" & sitting at the blank screen, and the stock recovery doesn't give full adb access. I'm currently looking into the various data recovery options to maybe pull some stuff off after reseting. It's really only a few files that I need, so maybe that will work?

Unfortunately the internal SD card mounts using MTP and not like a flash drive, so using the usual methods through Windows to recover wont work. However you could try and restore your internal sd card using this solution: http://goo.gl/OKdV14
As for accessing adb through recovery, you could try this method: http://goo.gl/5T7bhq
Hopefully one of these methods should work, so you can at least recover some of your files.
I had the same problem today. I tried to backup a twrp backup I have made few weeks ago but I still had the black screen. The only solution is to factory reset...
Happily I could have saved my data when I was on TWRP. Anyone knows how to restore sms from the data I have saved ?
If you get stuck in charge only mode, while running the latest cm12, and the usb menu won't show up in the settings tab (under storage -> more) just delete the file /data/properties/persist.sys.usb.config and reboot. It should restore it back to normal connectivity over usb.
Hi!
After i choosed charge only in my blisspop, my pc or my laptop doesnt recognize my zenfone even in bootloader. Tryied to factory reset, flash another rom but, tried your method but no success. I can only use adb over wifi becouse of this.
Worked splendidly...thanks!!!
wish i would have seen this before as i formated my fire to get rid of this.
Hi,
I have to pick up this old thread, because I have the same Problem with my Lenovo K3 Note on CM12.1. Deleting the suggested file and rebooting did not solved the problem. The file persist.sys.usb.config was not restored after reboot. Any other suggestions for me?
THX
J.
Many, many thanks. Every time I choose "charge only" my Fire 7th (KFAUWI) with Lineage 12 (austin) installed get stuck and I can't conect it to PC. The only solution was a factory reset to get it to normal (mtp/ptp conection).
Sorry to revive an old thread but I need to thank you. You saved me one month of searching for a solution. Worked like a charm.
Can I disable this "charge only" option? In case I choose it by mistake.

When I try to do into ...data... It says I need to turn on root access. How do I go about this?
