Custom ROMs? - Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is anyone near ready to release a Rom for this tablet? How far away is it? Thought I'd start a thread rather than hounding through all posts to find some new info every day.

I think it's safe to say that if/when someone releases a ROM for the Fire, there will be a dedicated thread created in the Development section and you won't have to go "hounding through all posts to find some new info every day."

Absolutely. People need to calm down and get their OCD in check

Please note:
"hounding through all posts to find some new info every day. "
is precisely what we expect users to do; we would be overrun in a day if everyone just made a new thread instead of doing a few mouse clicks. Read and learn, and not only will the forum be easier to follow for everyone, but you may pick up something you didn't know along the way...

Let's clean up the Wizard Upgrading Forum.

Guys,
As everyone who has read more than 3 posts here knows the Wizard Forums have become quite the mess lately
To help fix this situation, the Admins and Moderators have wisely decided to add a few Moderators seeking members who are active in the various threads.
I was honored to be one of the Wizard Members selected for this task.
Now I need your help. This forum is a community effort, it should reflect the needs and wishes of the community. That is where you come in.
I've already made Faria's "CID Unlocking for AKU 2.x Roms" Thread STICKY. Hopefully this will make it easier for newbie and veterans alike to find.
Please submit suggestions for other useful threads whose content should be made sticky.
I would like to eventually get this type of content added to the WIKI and then replace the stickies with a single closed thread that has links to the various sections of the new Wiza-Wiki.
Also, I know that we have a few members working on getting the Wiza-Wiki in shape, let's get behind them and support their efforts.

Why not simply gather up all the threads a newbie would need in order to SIM/CID-unlock, upgrade, etc into one sticky post and call it something like "all you need to know to upgrade your wizard"... Might help to clear up some confusion

Perfect idea, let's get the threads collected. Then we can compile the info into a concise thread and close it so it doesn't become useless.
My suggestions:
1. The wiki - of course
2. Everything that's already sticky
3. changing splashscreens
4. faria's ext-rom guide
5. One of the "wizard wont start" threads - even though it's not really an upgrade issue it's seems to be a fairly reoccuring question.
I'm sure the list will grow but this was what I found after a quick runthrough.
Other than that one might also want to mention the meaning of WWE and the fact that you can change the language by changing rom etc
Pehaps also the fact that the standard user profile is set to only display threads 1 month old...
Basically just include every question ever asked by anyone who's ever had a problem
2 cents
My 2 cents... Let's not make mess in one separate thread cause it would be hard to find the answers in it. Let newcomers see what they are looking for reading the thread header. I suggest to collect threads worth to be sticky in separate subforum say Wizard FAQ where users can't write, just read. Reviewing the FAQ time to time move some threads into Wiza-Wiki.
And if one of those n00b threads would appear in any of Wizard forum we could send newcomers to FAQ first (say by PM) and then send a message to mods to close or kill the thread.
So the structure of the Wizard forum could be:
Wizard FAQ
Wizard
Wizard upgrading
Wizard accessories etc.
G4
Rom updates
I think, to stop some of the annoying threads, it would be wise to stop the uploading and/or posting password protected ROM's and have the whole forum commenting, guessing........ it's childish and could be handled by PM's or E-mails.
Yes, I'm jealous........ but it is not helping the forum.
How about this one:
* I have developed I great new ROM, which is unbelievable, should I release it or not ?*
Is also not helping.
Kyphur, I think you will be a great mod, but don't just look at the n00bs.
Also, too many Stickies is improving, try using folders in stead.

It's NOT childish! Right now Jose is dealing only with me and it's better that way. I've uncovered a couple of bugs that we can fix before it hits the streets. Not quite ready for prime time, sorry. What's childish is the people that can't make a working ROM work because of themselves.
And be very careful of what you're jealous of. I've hard reset 2 phones today at least 10 times each, not counting going back and forth between two version of Jose's latest ROM on those two phones. We're talking 4 hours, maybe 5... and we're still working on it.

I merely help in the initial bug testing. If this particular bug had been released the *****ing would have been legendary and why clog up our threads this early. As it turns out Faria just sent me what appears to be the fix.
I expect some more beta testers will be invited now, though that's not my call (but it is my recomendation)

That would be good -- if it would work. Problem is that people just want to jump in with both feet asking questions WITHOUT reading first. That's been the problem all along and why the forum is such a mess now.
I'm SOOOOOO tired of the "I bricked my phone" threads and the "How do I unlock. . . " threads when all that information is already here several times over.
Just my 2 cents.
Is there any REAL way to 'make' someone read BEFORE posting?? That's the problem, as I see it.
Okay, we're getting a little off topic.
I think the point here is to address the most with the least.
By getting the CID Unlocking, Rom Flashing and other much sought after info stickied and closed threads then we can simply shut down new "I brincked my Phone" or What is CID unlocking threads by redirecting the OP to the stickied threads and then deleteing the new thread before it pollutes the already clogged threads.
After this pro-active approach is implimented, I will be more than happy to sift through the mounds of threads mercilessly deleting the old threads that are nothing but confusing and clogging to the search function.
It is impossible to have something that people will read before posting. I suggest that we have a section of FAQ by noobs, which other members can just post a single line "go read the wiki".
the best place to start with clean up is the wikki, i looked through the wizard wikki last night and its horrible.. there is even a post from someone on there looking for something specific with their email address, didnt even bother to post it in the boards..
BTW, im a mod now to i will start looking and cleaning up tonight when i get home!

What good is QA if question threads are closed

I started a new thread asking for ROM suggestions that met specific criteria... no where did i ask for a ROM without issues.
I got a few suggestions (most were "I like X" and not what i was after) and then the moderator locked the thread with the answer:
Your best bet is to try a few roms and stick with the one you like best. Most of the custom roms are good but to ask for something that has no issues when they are being built off a port and not Captivate source code is a bit of a stretch. There are no promises with custom roms, that is just the way it is.
So what good is the QA section if i Can't ask which ROMs support Exchange, BT, etc. I have tried a bunch that don't but now that there are 20 or so, there must be one that fits my needs.
I don't usually call people out, but closing a thread in Q/A when there is all kinds of other stuff going on is silly.
Do we have new rules for the Q/A section? Apparently soliciting advice on specifics is offensive to some. If it was closed because people can't answer the question - then you are punishing the OP.
I am a mod on other sites, and i am surprised this thread was closed with such impunity.
I guess this thread will be closed or deleted soon too. But thanks for reading.

1. All ROMs may not work the same on all hardware. So try them out to find out which suits u best.
2. If u have any issues, ask in the ROM specific thread preferably.
3. Read the ROM thread. Generally in the OP or in a post or two that follow, all the things included in the ROM are listed, along with anything that doesn't work. That should take care of u knowing if the ROM u r looking at has it or not.
Last but not the least, people may not always appreciate a question for which answer is easily search-able, or has been answered already many times, or are present in the ROM thread on page 1. Literally every rom today has the OP or the post following that details what all the ROM has, and where it fails.
I understand the op's concern as he was asking about some specific features which, although important to many users, are usually not addressed in the rom op.
You happen to be a casualty of the war against "which rom is best" posts.
Feel free to start a thread questioning when we will see gingerbread, or speculating on why we have yet to receive froyo though. Those appear much more frequently and are allowed to blossom into flame fests.

Best 2 sentences I've read in a long time.
As to your issue. I agree that you should be able to ask a legitimate question like that. You're not one of those asking which is fastest or which will get me higher quad scores. I'm thinking there's probably not a great deal of people who would have tested all those options either. Like myself, I have no use for Exchange or BT or even GPS for that matter. I can speak for the parts I use, which are the google apps and other things.
I would think that if you want the most complete ROM you should stay close to stock. Right now I think there are only 2 custom ROMs built from the stock Captivate ROM, Cognition and Firefly. Firefly does use an i9000 based kernel/modem, so I don't know if that affects the functionality you're looking for.
When in doubt, just keep loading all the ROMs to test them out.......j/k terrible idea.
Well sense you wanted to call someone out, I replied to you telling why I closed it and if you are a mod on another forum you should understand about asking for info that can be searched for and found with a little research. So lets look at your requirments for a rom that is built from a port and not Captivate Source code.
1. Stable-Most roms
2. Americanized-? the local settings can be set in each rom
3. No FFC stuff- not sure what FC issuses you are talking about.
4. Good sound/voice quality-Love the sound on mine mixed with the sppedmod kernel and vodoo sound app
5. BT support (voice dial would be nice - even with vlingo) 2.2
6. Exchange Support-2.2.1
7. Decent battery- that is all on what you consider decent battery, Mine lasts 12 hours and that is good battery for me
8. 2.2 or 2.2.1-most roms are built off of 2.2.1 there are some that are 2.2
9. Good data-Speeds is what I assume you mean, that is as much carrier as rom based
all this was found with a search, which I see more and more people are not using. This is not a make my phone cool forum. For lack of a better term this is an Research & development Forum.
Might want to Look at the FAQ in the threads that have them to see if you see any issues that is a deal breaker for you.
As for your other thread that is all you were gonna get was I like this this rom or I like that one. We all understand that custom roms are a give and take deal. You want the newest Unofficial stuff then you most be willing to deal with some issues that might come up. If you want something that works 100%, 100% of the time then I would stay stock as there are no promises with custom roms

I also think more should be done about all the questions in general. Move those to q&a and start handing out warnings. This is ridiculous.
At least I am not alone.
How many ROMs are there now? For me to search every single ROM thread (including all change logs) to see if a ROM meets my specific needs is silly.
I hate when people ask "how do I flash back to stock" and this is not one of those questions. I can't type this in the search field "Rom support for 1-10" and get any meaningful hit. And many ROMs link to alternate sites, and you have to view the features there - when they are all listed.... Some don't list email support until you go to the FAQ and it says email.apk was removed.
Again, I am not a newb looking for sympathy - I just want some equality in the heavy hammer. Next time I will title my thread "when will we see gingerbread" and all will be good.

So you think that If a question is posted that can be found with a simple search that a warning should be handed out?
I understand that the Captivate is for alot of people their first smartphone, and can be overwhelming, so new question threads for things that can be searched for are gonna happen.

I remove those threads when I see them come up. As silly as it might be that is what your gonna have to do. If you want a perfect rom your best bet is to learn to make it your self. Do you understand what "from a port" means. That means it was not made for our device and that there will be issues. The Dev try to fix them but like I said there is no 2.2 Captivate source code to build from so they do the best they can. Look I am not trying to come across rude but all these threads asking for this and that and "wtf this doesnt work" Is really starting to get on my last nerve. The only advice one can truly give is "Read, read and read some more to make sure you have all your bases covered."
I am not gonna argue the point any longer and will give this thread a few minutes for people to reply before I close it.
+1 Make your own, I did.
The time you flash all the rom's in the forum and test it out, you probably could of custom built your own to your specifications. So many roms out there, just not the flash freak like I was, too much time.

[Q] Hey Devs, whatcha gonna do with the new Froyo source?

Unless I'm mistaken, there now is only one Dev out there that has stuck by Captivate code. As someone who places a high value on the Audience voice chip on the AT&T devices, I am very interested to see if more devs will look at this newly released source and make something of it, either new or port their existing top-notch work. I've tried, and liked, many of the I9000-based ROMs, but I keep coming back to the Cappy-based ones due to the voice quality.
So Devs... any interest? I'm sure that I'm not alone from a user perspective.
I would like to see a kernal based off the released source that also has the voodoo sound added to it. I am sure there is a lot that can be done and it will take some time.
I was thinking of flashing to something new, but with the source available, I think it's time to be patient. Can't wait for a semi-up to date ROM with full captivate compatibility!
this belongs in Q&A section
I believe whole heartedly that the ROMS the DEVs are putting out are fantastic and do everything I want and need in a ROM.
OTHER then the audiance chip support. It would be cool to have in the roms as an ability but not necessarily required.
See sig below - this post doesnt belong here. *facepalm* The devs will do what they do, when they decide they wanna do it - noobs coming in here constantly asking for sh*t only irritates them and pushes them away from bringing us the good stuff....

I thought about that, but I put it here for two reasons:
The developers come here regularly, and not necessarily the Q&A section
This is a question directed directly at the devs, not necessarily the user community
Make sense?
Devs still read the Q&A - how about reading the forum rules and abiding.... this is un-needed clutter in the Dev section

Not trying to start a flamewar or anything... while I only joined last November, and my post count is indeed low, please don't assume that I'm here asking for candy. I comb these forums many times daily, and only post when I can't find the answers I'm looking for.
As for irritating the devs by asking for stuff... I've noticed that for the most part, they actually like the feedback, and want to know what the users like. I see no problem with providing input. Like I said, I posted here because the Devs come here, and not so much to the Q&A section.
Lastly (and maybe this should have been clearer in my OP), only one dev seems to be working on Captivate kernels, with the rest working on I9000 (since source has been around a long while). What with new hardware around the corner, dev interest for the Cappy might be waning. I thought it a fair question.

Not trying to start a flame war either was just trying to redirect you and prevent further endless flaming if you continued to post in the wrong section.

Agree completely!! Dev(s) do read other forums
I have question about the source code that was just released. How do I implement it into my build enviroment?
I mean ok I extract the file. Then read the readme file. It says to overwrite the modules I want to build. Is there a general rule to what should and should not be over written. I have compiled the generic code but nothing device specific.

LOL. No apologies needed. This thread that you started is essentially the same as opcow's, except that he posted the news before you did. All that followed in his thread, however, was very similar to the responses in your thread.
Similar, but different - different because the hall monitors didn't flame anyone in that thread! Why not?? Because, methinks, for the most part, those in the other thread were more "senior" than thee, Mr. Dalewest. Get it? There's a pecking order here that must not be violated.
Strange, but I didn't notice any ROM devs complaining in your thread or Opcow's. I did, however, see some silliniess in the other thread, such as "Charlie Sheen throwing some pixie dust" into the new ROMs, but no cries of outrage over that. Then come some self-appointed spokespersons for the devs in your thread saying the devs this, the devs that, "Ooh, the devs are going to get upset," etc. [Sigh]
The source of KB1 dropping has been mentioned since yesterday or before in various threads here, and I didn't see any devs getting upset about it. The KB1 source dropping is certainly related to development. IMO it's perfectly fine to post it in Development. Your are not asking a general question - you are asking what the devs have in mind vis a vis development, now that KB1 has dropped.
That said, given that there was already another thread, you shouldn't have started another one. Consider your wrist slapped, ha, ha.

First of all, this should be moved to the Q&A section, and he may use big letters if he wants too, if he wasn't allowed then xda would remove the feature i'm sure.
If you could update your signature with links to tut's of how to do each step it would help a lot more then just " Look at my Signature " Your signature is not helpful at all to new users. " Unlock Bootloader " Well how do you expect someone who has never done it before to know the steps in which to take to undergo the unlocking procedure.
Checl out the " Sticky's Roll Up Thread " In the General/Q&A section " and you should be able to find the corresponding methods to help you get flashing and onto your desired Rom, welcome to the community, any other problems, feel free to open a thread and we will be sure to help you as soon as possible (Have a search first thou ofcourse )

big letters are there to emphasize something. if you're using it in normal post, it's just as douchy as writing in full-caps.
my signature has enough info to point every newcommer into right direction. it's there to make sure they do steps in the right sequence. details can be found by searching the (sub)forum. also, my signature is the answer to his question on what he did wrong - he flashed custom recoveery without unlocking bootloader. once he knows what he did wrong, he can move on to fixing it and doing it properly.
i honestly don't understand why people expect to be spoonfed info? why are people lazy to read stickies/search forums? they will get their answer faster that way, instead of waiting for someone to provide them with everything in another thread they created.
i really dont want to sound entitled, *****y or anything. but the amount of people hijacking threads, posting new threads improperly, and generally not being good users is too high. thats why i added the info i did to my signature, so people can "follow the breadcrumbs" to solve their problems. cheers.

Well most users need more then breadcrums, say you got your first Android Device, and it was an expensive device to you and you was scared about bricking it or whatever, you wouldn't want to use intuition for something that could potential screw you over. For Example, i'm not going to become a Qualified Chef by searching and following Top recipes online am i?! It's not gonna help me achieve anything, a tutor who can Point you in the right direction and who can Help you out with steps you don't understand, and who will be there to answer any Problems you face.
Sometimes most people prefer to be Taken through tutorials Step by Step and your signature is very minimal. So therefor should not be used as the answer. It's users like you that cause so many duplicate threads to be opened.
If your not going to answer the question fully, and with enough information (Links) then don't bother answering it and leave it someone else who can provide the correct information. If it has already been answered, link him to the corresponding thread and give him the reassurance that a PM is all he needs if he doesn't understand what is the thread. The reason you have SOO many more POSTS then THANKS is because what you are posting is not helpful to other users. If you are going to have a tut in your sig and want people to follow it, add links otherwise don't bother posting half assed answers. It's not helpful. If your not gonna do a good job and get annoyed by noobs. Leave xda.
For information on how to follow this guys half assed unhelpful signature, go here and make you sure 1. Upgrade to JB (Officially) 2. Root 3. Unlock Bootloader (Various Methods, use whichever works for you) 4. Flash recovery (TWRP/CWM, Personal choice) 5. Flash whatever you like!
Stickies found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2225910
Any problems drop me a PM, It's what xda users are meant to be here for, to help eachother out!

this was my first android device. paid it 300 euro of my hard earned money. before i bought it, i sat down, read about the android, read about the device, read the stickies, followed the tutorials. if i encountered an error, i searched if someone else already had it. if i could not find someone else with the same issue, i'd post new topic/post.
there ARE tutorials around the site, i'm well aware of that. my signature isn't step-by-step tutorial, it's there to POINT PEOPLE INTO RIGHT DIRECTION, and it's doing it's job as i've been told.
on the other hand, you're not a mod - you dont have the right to tell me what i should or should not post, as long as it's within the rules (and this guys topic is totaly out of the rules - wrong subforum, question asked numerous times). i have 5:1 post to thanks ratio becouse i ask and discuss a lot. helping someone once in five posts is good enough for me. for you it seems, it's just a measure of your e-peen.
in the end, you enable breaking of rules by letting people know it's ok to open another and another and another topic on same issues that have been discussed numerous times over. with not telling them that what they're doign is wrong, you're enabling every other noob that comes here to, instead of search for answers to his questions, to open another topic anywhere he pleases, flood the forum with useless posts and not be sanctioned by it.
atleast i tell them proper ettiquete - and the ettiequete is for them to search more for answers to questions already answered.
now i'll say it again, you're not a mod, so you telling me to "leave xda" has zero to none practical effect. i will post whatever i want within the rules of the forum.
ending my post on a not-as-assholish note as your post is, i wish you all the best. over and out from this thread.

Now you see this is the main reason that i have more respect then you do from other users, just stop being such a butthurt little childish kid about it and HELP THEM OUT if the thread is duplicate, link them to the correct one and report the thread. simple as.
XDA Rules may state search before posting, so chances are they probably have already! And that's why they're opening a new thread. You was a noob once, how would you have liked it if people were being ass's to you?! Because compared to me your a noob, and i may start treating you like you are dense and know nothing. XDA Rules can be bent. so what if he opens a new thread. It can be closed, moved, and deleted if it needs to be, if you don't bloody like it don't look on it.
If you don't have anything nice to say, don't bloody say it at all, it's the internet, let him post where he wants and what he wants. you can always request it to be maintained.
Goddamn butthurt users. We are here to help, not be ass's because we want to feel less noobish then the next guy

AOSP Rom's is there a point?

MODS PLEASE MOVE THIS POST. I AM SORRY FOR POSTING IT IN THE WRONG SECTION.
I don't mean to be a downer on people who've done the hard work in porting or making a working custom rom but is there point to AOSP Roms if there is no working camera? I mean isn't it a pretty big functionality that needs to be working for the ROMS to be actually released as working?
Perhaps maybe its just me who thinks if you buy the Z1 based on the fact that it has a good camera you'd want that one minor feature.
Just a thought I decided to share.
(PS: When I say camera isn't working I mean complete functionality not "It just can't focus. It does work!"
Now you have seen the point of the Q&A thread (i.e. its a place for posting questions that is better than the original dev forum) I think its time to answer your question.
the point is this is a developers forum, for developers and by developers. Not every single rom in this forum is a finished article but are works in progress. They are not here for you to be able to pick through and make your phone "cool"
They are here as on going pieces of work for people to help develop and work on.
Please read this
This is the highlight of that post and should be the last word in this thread
XDA-Devs is about developers & hackers helping each other and working together to get the most out of our devices by understanding them better than most.
XDA-Devs is not about helping everyone who wants a "Kewl bit of kit" make their phone better than the guy next to him.

Well, work done now doesn't have to be done in the future anymore so if they iron out all the issues already that saves a lot of time in the future right? Sure, without a working camera there will not be a lot of people using them, but I still hope sony fixes this issue in the future and when they do we at least have a bit to choose from already.
That and the fact that it might be more for themselves, to develop and get some experience or work on things, then for the end user.
