Android 6.0 broke wifi 802.11ac in Nexus 5 (D820) - Nexus 5 General

I've upgraded my access point to support 802.11ac. My laptop with Intel 7260 AC card connects at 867 Mhz and I can copy a file over LAN at 50+ Mb/c. When I connected my Nexus 5 with Marshmallow, it connected with 802.11n protocol at 135 Mhz and file copy speed at 5+ Mbps. Then I tried to flash Android 4.4.4 which resulted in 802.11ac and connection speed of 433 Mhz which is expected. File copy speed settled around 10 Mb/c. Not huge, but twice faster. Then flashed 5.1.1. Same result as 4.4.4. Then I tried to flash bare 6.0 again and got 802.11n and 135 Mhz again. So, it's clearly a firmware issue. So, I downgraded my phone to 5.1.1. to make wifi faster.

Actually, 5.1.1 lost 802.11ac as well after all the updates. I suspect this is something to do with the Google Play Services which have the new version in 6.0 out of the box while 5.1.1 has an older one which works as needed after fresh flash and then gets upgraded and breaks the 'ac' mode. Gotta verify that.

Well ain't that just a peach!
I upgraded my AP several months ago (had Cataclysm Lollipop) and decided to test file transfer speeds a couple months ago. Noticed speeds never exceeded 10Mbps. I was rather disappointed and thought it was a faulty AP, but too late to return it. Now I wonder if this is the issue.
If I use my PC to pull files from my phone using an ftp host the speeds will increase slightly to about 12-14Mbps, but that's all. I never thought to check what protocol it was using, I just naturally assumed it was AC since it was on the 5 GHz channel.

It can be 'a', 'n' and 'ac' running at 5 GHz.

I don't have an 'ac' router, but I have tried 5ghz ac by creating access points like:
WiFi file transfers as follows:
Nexus 5 6.0 WiFi hotspot 5ghz band - Galaxy S6 -- speeds around 22mBps download to S6.
Galaxy S6 superbeam auto 5Ghz band - Nexus 5 -- 25mBps.
Also tried the above tests with tab pro 8.4 and got similar speeds (20-27mBps up and down).
Nexus 5 running 6.0 cata and DP2,3.
Maybe, the router needs some different configuration.
On YouTube, I have seen some videos testing the Google fibre WiFi on Nexus 5, it did 220ish mbps (220/8 = 27.5mBps) with sub 5ms pings on the speedtest app.

Chances are you guys just ain't using AC 'correctly'
Nexus phones 1 can't use DFS channels. It absolutely will not connect.
This means less overlapping channels can be used for aggregation.
Most time of the you'll be lucky to pull off 40mhz channel width. 80mhz was great when no one else had 5ghz WiFi but as more people move to 5ghz N you'll lose it until everyone goes AC.
The Nexus 5 is only 1x1 so AC will never be faster than 433mbps.
So 1 set your channel width to 80mhz
Two use a Non-DFS channel like 48 or 161.
There's only 5 non-overlapping 80mhz channels.
File transfers with an N5 is a bad measure. There's only so much write cache. You could do a couple tens of MBs then the cache is full and it needs to move to the slow NAND.

In my case the phone connects at 433mbps.
File size was: 800MB
Average speed(800/time taken): ~25mBps

I found what was eliminating the 'ac' connection. That's the Google app. When the 5.1.1 is just flashed, there's an old version and the phone connects with 'ac' and 433 Mbps. Android Wear requires a newer Google app. If I install the latest version, the 'ac' protocol disappears. Then I re-flashed and installed the Google app from Sep 1. The 'ac' stayed. Installed Google Wear and it was fine working with somewhat old Google app. So, now I have everything on my phone as before and I still have the 'ac' protocol working.

[Q] Get the best out of wi-fi?

Hi, I was wondering if there are ways you can increase your wi-fi speed, like installing drivers or changing options or something? I was also wondering what is the max speed the wi-fi can get up to on the captivate? Ive gone as far as almost 18 Mbps and I have about a 54 Mbps on my home modem.
Sorry no, if you are using a customised ROM, they usually have the so-called "Wi-Fi fixes" on them (not even sure what they fix).
As far as I know though Captivates should be using the full 802.11g capacitiy anyway... What are you using to test these speeds anyway?
The speed test app from the market, only thing i could find to test the speed, thanks for answering!
Ah right, then the speed test you have done is for the Internet Speed. So that's the actual speed you're getting for the internet (even on your home computer, if you're doing this test at the home Wi-Fi), not the actual Wi-Fi speed.
Wait...I tested speedtest on my home computer too and I got about 45 mbps(highest i got) and then I got a 18 Mbps on my phone using wifi(both "download" speeds btw) there are one or two things using wifi in my home but I have another question, am i supposed to be getting around the same speed I have on my phone as I have on my home computer?
Do you have the home computer using wireless as well?
No, I have fios,my home internet modem is also a router
Then yes, it will depend entirely on how many devices you have using the wireless at one point. If you have a 802.11g wireless router, then the max total output will be 54Mbps. This will obviously be shared among your wireless computers/devices.
holy **** so your saying that my captivates wifi can get up to almost as much as my pc modem can?
Theoretically, yes. If there are no other devices on it, and no interferences in-between.
Actually, I just found out that our Cappys have Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n; DLNA.
This means that if your wireless router supports the 802.11n framework, it should use that instead (which is greater than 54Mbps).
Of course, I'm not sure if the ROM and/or modem will support that... Stock ROMs will most definitely support it, and probably any ROMs built using the Stock ROM.

Nexus 6 - WiFi SpeedTest Slower than should be.

I'm not sure if this is a networking issue or phone issue, but I think I got this narrowed down to a phone issue.
I currently have a 105mbps plan through Comcast and all is working well except my Nexus 6 WiFi SpeedTest maxes out at around 20-22mbps.
Currently routing with a WRT1200AC Router with both 2.4 and 5ghz bands enabled.
I am aware the Nexus 6 supports 802.11ac; therefore I connected to my 5ghz band network. The nexus shows i'm getting a solid 360mbps connection to the router. However when doing a SpeedTest it caps at 20-22mbps (I should be getting around 105mbps). I suspect no issue with the router as I tested with a 802.11ac supported laptop and was screaming past my 105mbps speed. Based off some google searches I found that possible causes were maybe some power saving features, those have been turned off.
Troubleshooting I have done:
- Moved my 5ghz band to different channels
- Tried different 5ghz channel widths
- Tested speed on 2.4ghz band (Same Results)
- Tested Another Nexus 6 (I tried running a speedtest with a family members N6 running pure stock rom/unrooted and same results as with my Custom Rom'd N6)
- Disabled Carrier Radio leaving only wifi on.
- Reboot Phone, Router, toggled wifi Off and on.
Any other suggestions? It would be pretty disappointing of Google / Motorola if this was the result of hardware capabilities.
Select a different server on Speed Test.
not seeing that issue here...

OK thanks for looking!
hmmmm

has anyone tried the wifi speed increase hack/mod?

I was browsing and saw a mod for some phones to increase WiFi speed.
So i had a go and it significantly increased the speed.
-----------------
The changes are in the following file:
WCNSS_qcom_cfg.ini
Changing the following line:
gChannelBondingMode24GHz=0
to
gChannelBondingMode24GHz=1
-----------------
Any one can explain what it actually did?
Seems like a simple change for a big difference, but not sure if i had inadvertently stuffed something else up.
It forces the phone to use bigger channel widths on 2,4GHz , but it doesn't really matter these days.
Just get a 5Ghz network if you want speed, for example 2 internal speedtests on the mi5 on a 2 and 5 ghz 802.11ac network:
2,4Ghz N 40Mhz : 67mbit/s
5Ghz AC 80Mhz: 430mbit/s (my laptop gets 700mbit easily over wifi , too bad the Mi5 doesn't have enough antennas for that)
What router do you have?
On my old Linksys EA on 5GHz band Mi5 doesn't connect above 150Mbit/s. Router is supposed to be N300+N300 and has 2+2 internal antennas.

Android 7 - 5Ghz WiFi slow

Jun-3 2017 got OTA update a few weeks ago. T813 doesn't have problem connecting to 5Ghz wifi but on 5Ghz the connection is slow. Appears to be capped at about 10MB. Whenever I run speedtest while connected to my 5Ghz network I get 10MB uploads. Disconnect from 5Ghz, rerun speedtest and I get 80MB uploads. Go back to 5Ghz rerun speedtest, back to 10MB. Can reproduce this every time.
I guess I am stuck not using 5Ghz.

Found this in a different thread. Changed to channel 40 and speedtest shows upload speeds of 80MB. Netgear recommends using channels above 149 but I will stick to 40. Anyone know why using the lower band 5Ghz channels gives higher speeds than the higher band channels?
do you happen to be using a euro model in north america? what is your CSC and which country are you using the device?
On router (if possible) change channel width to 20 any frequency should fix wifi. Atleast for me this worked
Sent from my SM-T813 using Tapatalk
After changing the routers channel bandwith, this thing goes from 10 mbps to 80mbps. They need to fix this. All my other devices max out at 235mbps on 5ghz. This tab is too advanced to be doing this.
Had the exact same issue on my new T713 and the channel width change from Auto to 20 worked for me on Asus router. Left the Control Channel on Auto. Thanks!
I had this same issue too. I had to turn off Power Save Support then I didn't have anymore 5 GHz slowdowns

Mine had the slowdown with Power Save off - the channel bandwidth was what fixed mine.
hey guys, my download speed is very slow on 5ghz wifi, but few time ago was working well, I dont know what happened. My macbook reach 120MB download and 10MB upload, but my galaxy s8 shows 10MB dowload speed. I tried change my channel width on router, but didn't work.

I'm finding 5GHz to be a real mixed bag across all of my devices - Tab S2 T713, 2 iPad Air 2's, Dell XPS 13 9350 laptop, a Lenovo desktop, 2 Dell desktops, and a Galaxy S7 Edge phone. Performance seems to be inconsistent and I see complete dropouts where the band isn't even visible on some devices. This is irrespective of distance from the router, an Asus RT-AC66U_B1, number of connected devices, etc. When it's good, I see 120MB/sec but other times it will drop off by 50% or more or will disconnect. I've pretty much reverted to 2.4GHz except when I get the urge to test 5GHz out again.

Question Slow wifi speed 6e and 6

I have a brand new Asus GTAXE11000 router and my s21 just refuses to go past 350mps on 6e and 6. Is anyone seeing speeds past this on there phones or is the phone limiting to 350, I am literally a foot away from the router when testing.

I was going to suggest you go to snbforums but I see you are already there. Great site to go to and I read through the whole thread. Hope your problems get fixed (I have a mere RT-AC86U) but the router market has shown continually over the years that it treats its purchasers of new models as beta testers. Edit: By the way, My internet connection is an over-provisioned 400/50 and I get 450/55 which is the same as the ethernet connection from the desktop.
I don't have 6e, but I'm getting better speeds on my new WiFi 6 RT-AX68 than I'm seeing on my old WiFi 5 RT-AC68, and I have the AX set to a lower bandwidth (40Mhz vs 80Mhz). The 436 result is the WiFi 6 router. That is the max of my internet connection.
I'm on 6 and my wifi speeds are about as maxed out as my 400 MB service will theoretically push through. I'm on Asus.

Fixed the issue with a network reset on the phone now seeing 1gig download on 6e!!
I have the RT-AX88 set up in a mesh network across my house. Speed was an issue when I first got them installed, but slowly over the years with firmware updates they disappeared. Another thing I have set up in the router settings is to reboot the router every morning at 3AM, that seemed to clear up a lot of issues for me as well.
Well the issue has come back it is no longer fast and needs another reset
edit: the culprit was adguard, updating to the nightly build fixed the issue.
Waiting for prices to go down before jumping from 6 to 6e since it will only benefit my s21. But good to know about real life performance and things to look out for!
I have the same router but my phone just doesn't seem to find the 6GHz SSID, is it possible it's deactivated in my country? (Argentina, SM-G998B). I might be the first one around here to have a 6E router, so it's hard to figure out!
