Hey guys!
It's been like three years since I posted something last on the XDA-Developers forums. I kinda reached a dead end to mobile phone technology, and Android as well. I used to tweak around my settings, rooting my phone, installing custom roms and whatnot - and here I'm back!
I bought the Nexus 4 a couple of days ago, and I thought I wanted to share a few things that I've come across, both good and bad.
Incredible build quality
Yes, I'm a bit nervous about tossing the phone outta my hand, but I must admit that glass feels a lot more smooth to carry around. Also the phone is surprisingly light and big. The rubber around the phone adds comfort when just dialling people - you'll get the right feeling. The sort of curve that the screen fades out to is a really cool idea as well. Apropos the screen, the IPS Panel just looks amazing from every angel. I looks like painted ink.
Rattle?!
After playing around with the phone, I guess you pretty much notice the rattling noise around the cam area. I looked it up, and it seems like it's a common problem, not to say a really quick-spreading one. As far as I'm concerned, people has confirmed that it's the autofocus, and a lot of phones on the market does the same. I doesn't annoy me at all, but I just get reminded now and then when laying down my phone on a soft surface.
Project Butter, Android is making this phone a clear pleasure
Holy honeycomb this phone is quick. The V-Sync and the Triple Buffering definitely made a huge improvement in the whole Android industry. You can really get the idea that this is not just some phone some random dudes made, and then just throw whatever version on Android on it - that's basically what Samsung did with their early tablet devices, without Google having a proper version of Android released (Honeycomb). This phone is just tailored with the hardware, and it feels that the software and hardware are "bound together", if you get the general idea.
Google franchise making me interested
I don't know about you Nexus owners, but I'm certainly more excited about this years Google I/O than I were last year. I feel like I'm included as the Nexus users always gets the first Android releases, and I'm just really looking forward to see all the goodies in the next Android version.
So without further ado, and without further talk, I want to know what you guys think.
- What do you think of the device in general?
- Are you critical against all the minor problems (such as rattling noises)?
- What do you think of Google cooperating with LG?
- Are you looking forward to I/O?
Cheers,
Fred.
I agree with you but I wanted to add that the rattle noise is also because of the button that allows you to pull out the SIM tray. It annoyed me the first days because it feels like there is some part not fixed inside the phone but now I learnt to ignore it. Sort of.
Very true, love the nexus 4. I'm not worried about the rattling either, although the fragility of the device annoys me - I don't really enjoy covering up the beautiful design with a case!
And yes I can't wait until KLP which will hopefully be at IO - although it might be a hassle updating with a rooted device with custom recovery?

You'll just need to manually update the device since with a custom recovery you won't get any OTA.

Wrong. Recovery doesn't matter. It's the /system that matters.

So you mean if I'm stock rooted with TWRP and a non-stock kernel I'll still get the next OTA?

Yup. But it won't flash. Now if you flash stock rom in top, download ota and flash it from twrp it will work.

The rattle is apparent in other phones as well i.e s3 and iphone. Guess all phone companies use the same manufacturer when it comes to cameras.
By the way, are your guys' power button also a bit loose? I have to press a bit above the middle to gain a hundred percent hardness on my press.
It's not alarming me as I just got a cover for the phone, but it's still a tad annoying to know. The volume buttons and the power button is also creaking if I press at different places.
Buttons on this phone is definitely a minus so far!
once you go nexus you can never turn back.... i went to a nexus from an xperia and i can enjoy the same "xperiance" of xperia and have the latest updates
The build quality feels sturdy, but I wouldn't describe it as incredible, due to how easily the screen and/or back shatters.
Hey guys, do you think buying a used note 3 is still a good by at $350?
How much do you think it will sell for in November after Note 4 hits the scene?
I think it's a decent deal. Not the best deal but not the worst deal.

Thanks. I just the pulled the trigger on a "mint" condition note 3 on swappa for $339 to hold me over until I get a Note 4 in November. Tired of my Nexus 5 poor battery life.
Enjoy. Battery on the note is a beast. ?

I got my note 3 back in January and I'm still very happy with it. This is the best battery life I've ever experienced on any device I've ever owned, But I also want to see what the future holds for the note line. If it's extremely nice I will get it. If not I will just keep my note 3 till I finally get tired of it.

I finally got the device. The seller claims that they too purchased it back in January. There isn't a mark on the device. It is definitely in mint condition.
It's on, rooted, debloated and disabled carrier iq, and customized! Easier than I expected to use one handed (but I have large hands) and fits in my pocket better than anticipated as well. Not as smooth as my Nexus 5 or even 4 (even turning most features off and using Nova), but worth the extra screen and battery size.
Definitely going for a Note 4 in a few months, but looking forward to using this bad boy for the time being! I'm not in any rush with this device in hand. The 3 is a great device. My only regret is not having moved to the Note line of phones earlier.

That's weird. I have a similar setup on my Note and it is the butteriest phone I've ever owned. I need to update my sig but I'm running stock rooted kitkat, I used Titanium Backup to debloat the crap out of it, and I got rid of Carrier IQ. There isn't a hint of lag.

I did the same thing, but just to my eye, it's not as smooth as a nexus 5. It's not a huge difference (it's barely a difference at all), and certainly not one that I would go back to a nexus for. It's just something I noticed with both devices in my hand at the same time.
If you enjoy rooting and flashing, I hope it's not the AT&T Note 3.

I rooted this note 3, but I've never flashed it because I was spending way too much time messing with roms on previous nexus.
What's the issue with att? I haven't looked into it. Difficult bootloader?

Except, with Safestrap it's actually possible to add custom ROMS. Took me around 20 minutes to get it set up and I;m no power user!
Can we steal the note 5's features.... Especially the finger print scanner mechanism thingy mah jig...lol
If you want a couple easy Note 5 features. You can start by removing your SD card and super gluing the back cover to your phone!

To answer your question; yes it is possible as its only software. The note 5 really don't have anything the note 4 doesn't with the exception of two things and two things only....the new style pen and the curved edge screen.

So you mean to tell me that the fingerprint scanner is the same? I thought it was changed when samsung came out with the S6, correct me if I'm wrong.

Two things? What about Exynos Octacore, 4GB of ram, thiner than our Note 4, camera with better low light pictures, streaming to YouTube with just the camera app (no livestream or ustream) better stylus pen, premium design, LTEcat9, should I continue? Lol actually the Note 5 is a good upgrade, the extra memory card and removable battery was never an issue for me, on all my years of phablets power user, never changed my battery or upgraded my external memory to more than 32GB and it was always free....

It is changed but the functionality of printing based on the fingerprint is only software related. There's not extra hardware needed for that function.

"Exynos Octacore, 4GB of ram, thiner than our Note 4, camera with better low light pictures, streaming to YouTube with just the camera app (no livestream or ustream) better stylus pen, premium design, LTEcat"
Can you count the amount of people that will actually need to use all these? Answer is yes because it's going to be a small number. I bought the Note series because of the pen. Know how often I use it? maybe 4 times a year. I got it because of my job at the time and as it turns out, I barely need to use it for my job now.
Exynos means no AOSP so you're stuck with Samsung's BS of a software. Only good thing about TW when it comes to Note is the Pen software!
4GB of Ram doesn't mean crap. Note 4 has 3GB of Ram and it's fast. Heck my wifes G2 has only 2GB and it still kicks ass. Antutu doesn't mean ****!!!
'Thiner' so that it can break? And since when does a thinner phone classify as a upgraded feature? Really?! iSheep stuff dude.
Better low light pictures. I can't even remember the last time I decided to try and take the perfect photo at night. Oh man....oh man...not again...
Streaming to Youtube....Oh you mean that's an upgrade because they changed some code in the camera app? Guess what, it's going to be ported!
Better Stylus....I'll give you that but that still doesn't justify getting it just for the fact that the Stylus is more like a pen now. Sorry
Premium Design...........LMFAO!!! That's the difference between buying a 911 GT and a 911 GT2. You're paying extra money because of the word premium. iSheep mentality. Samsung is actually succeeding in that department.
LTEcat9: Because our current speed of LTE Networks is totally going to utilize this feature right?
Look....the phone looks good. Actually I take that back. It looks like it needs to be in a bubble because it might break just looking at it. I know that's why you put it in a case. Why buy a pretty phone to dumb it down with a case when you bought it for the looks?!
And maybe you're into Specs; I'm not sure, but seriously. Are you really looking at those specs and trying to justify spending $799+ on that phone? You're better off just saying you like to have the newest thing when it comes out so that you have it.
If I was being a **** I'm sorry but I'm really tired of seeing all the force justified answers for why the Note 5 is an "upgrade."
I feel as though people are just taking what they are given because they aren't given anything other options so they just roll with the punches.
I see that other posters have stated "yes, samsung comes to xda and reads your post to give you what you want." I understand that they don't and thankfully they don't because if they really gave us what we want they would go bankrupt in a heartbeat. However, the Note 5 just doesn't make sense. They took away so many things that people use every single day. You wouldn't believe the amount of people that tell me they are so thankful that I recommended to them to get a phone with an SDCard to save their pictures and such because their previous phone didn't have it and they were thinking their stuff was getting backed up to the cloud and it wasn't.
blah...I'm off this..
Do you think the development people will be able to Chang the functionality of the note 4 fingerprint scanner anytime soon as it seems like it will be very complicated to achieve

Well said my friend
So I was offered a company phone from my job, I had the luxury of picking ANY phone(on Verizon). I went with the Note 5 thinking it would a good phone for my day to day working tasks. I came from an unlocked Nexus 6, so its been 7 days that I've been rocking the Note 5.
I have to say that today I'm possibly going back to Verizon and swapping it out for the Nexus 6. The lag is still there on the Note 5 and I'm thinking it's again due to TW. The screen and camera hands down is the best I've ever seen! But the studder slowness of the software turned me away VERY quickly. Maybe I've come to accustomed to stock Android[emoji16]
Iv had the nexus 6 and brother you will love it. Very easy to root and bootloader is simple to unlock. Top notch device!

Company phone - rooting allowed?
Same here with iPhone versus N6.
IPhone has a better battery life.
There is too much white in the Google software and the amoled screen causes battery drain.
Solution could be rooting and a dark rom, but that's a violation of the contract rules.
I went ahead and switched, and I'm going to go stock for a while, I'm just wondering at this point why I would root.

THIS!
I ran fully stock for a couple of days last week while debugging a problem with random reboots. I had forgotten how much screen space is taken up by useless annoying ads! Adaway is a godsend.
Ok so im a long time tmobile galaxy user.. started with the S2 went all the way up skipping the S5 switched to note3 and here i am with the note 5..
1) on the note 4 when i used the keyboard that came with the phone if i typed the word happy or sad, dog, cat, crying, baby, love.. anything, it would suggest an emoji... i can't seem to find a setting for the note 5 to do that. Is it possible?
2) i do not do not do not like the call popup if i get a call while I'm doing something else is there anyway to get rid of that?
I love having the Spen but I'm wondering if i should have chose the S6 edge plus. The note seems to be more for business purposes now.
