Should I make a petition to Amazon for BL unlock? - Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am considering making a petition to Amazon to provide a bootloader unlock for us. Should I do it? I don't think it would hurt to try.

Not to be negative but why do you think this tablet only cost $49.99, or $34.99 during black Friday? It's heavily subsidized to be use specifically only for Amazon. I would say that we here on XDA are a small percentage of consumer that is using the device to its full potential. Plus I'm sure the talented dev here will figure something soon. Just my 2 cents.

We already have CM and Slim running on the device.
If they wont unlock the bootloader for the Fire phone that was a major failure, why would they do it on this device?

There really is no point. Amazon would never want this. they want you to stay on stock fire os so you keep buying things from Amazon. that's how they can sell it for $35-$50

OEMs allowing bootloader unlock is exclusively for developers....why would anyone be developing exclusively for Fire OS? Amazon has absolutely not one good reason to agree with us that it should be unlocked.
I mean, go for it, start the petition and I'll sign, I wish it was unlocked, but I'm not holding my breath even for a second on it actually making a single bit of difference.
As long as we have roms and recovery I'm happy...I'd be WAY happier with pure AOSP MM over any CM at all, but for a $35 tab that will run an open, rooted (at the very least) lollipop rom, I have absolutely nothing to complain about at all!!! Hell, I have a 7 inch, 2 year old, galaxy tab 3 sitting on my desk as we speak which is stuck on 4.1.1 and still sells for 2x used what this Fire tab does new.

Yeah I know. I'm just a firm believer in doing something instead of just sitting and watching others do it.

[Q]Any development updates?

I haven't heard ANYTHING in the past few weeks about ICS, it's status, the work anyone else is doing (except Leo and Xron) or even the possibility of any updates to the beta we're on now. I've heard rumours of a min Jan launch for ICS on our TP, but can anyone else confirm?

Yes yes their one silly rule of not asking about when it's done. I didn't ask just about CM specifically, I also stated "the work anyone else is doing". I'm just looking for people keeping their ears to the ground and hearing things about whatever might be going on from whomever.

That's all we know for now. Hope that their work on ICS is so successfull that they literally have no time to post about updates
The vB2.8 Xron thread in the device forum has Leo talking all the time about how he's getting other really great devs involved. I'm sure 2.9 will be out soon, but CM9 is a different story.
Devs are always hard at work. They like to tinker... Patience is key. As for right now, Xron is good enough for me. I use it every day. Can do anything with it besides Skype (although I really haven't tried that yet).
"A little nonsense, now and then, is relished by the wisest men."
we have a very good xron rom so it's not difficult to wait few months for ics)
If you want to stay tuned , check dalingrin's twitter and cm's site.
Xron is pretty awesome. I'm thinking about getting a native android tablet like a Galaxy Tab 10.1 (someone is selling a brand new one for $300) and just selling this Touchpad. Maybe I'll wait it out and see. Has anyone had any issues with the casing cracking on their touchpad? What can I do to get warranty?

i will buy your touchpad if you decide to sell... I know a few devs ready and willing to buy it. This will have ICS long before Galaxy will have a good working one.
It will be a little bit for ICS. It's being worked on by whom I consider the best in the industry. Problem is we have NO GOOGLE or HP support for the touchpad. Then top it off we have a dual boot situation. Tonight I booted webOS for the first time in a month. That lasted an hour then back to android.
There is no way in Hell I would consider giving up my touchpad. No other tablet will have dual boot with two fantastic operating systems along with one that has native beats leaving the door cracked open for beats in android.
But, if you can't wait, name the price and what type of TP you have.
Thanks,

It's a 32 GB wifi Touchpad. I'm having a lot of issues with the casing getting cracks along the speakers and charging port. HP better warranty this. Apparently it's happened to a lot of people. Like I said, I don't know what I'm going to do yet. It works alright right now, a little on the heavy side and I have a few android phones I can sell to make up the $300 someone wants for their brand new never opened Galaxy Tab 10.1. I bought the HP Touchpad knowing that because WebOS was linux based that Android would be possible eventually. It's just development is moving a long a little too slowly. That's not including your ROM though, Leo. You're doing some awesome work for the tablet and in fact am the only reason why I'm holding on to it this long. But eventually the weight thing might be the swaying factor and the fact that a naively supported device is going to have so many less issues and small problems.
We'll see what I decide to do. I have someone looking at a few phones I threw up for sale and what HP says about the warranty on this thing. Max I would make you pay? The original $157.50 I paid for it plus shipping.

well the cracks around the speakers is cosmetic. Contact HP Support they will replace the casing.
I had the same issue with my TP. The customer support was good. They sent me a return box and label. All you have to do is to pack you TP as per instructions and drop it at nearby UPS store. I received the repaired TP within a week.
Act fast before the warranty expires.
Do you really expect these guys to be working on this much over Christmas? They have lives too, you know. Xron has become a great ROM lately as well and is getting new releases all the time. I'm sure ICS will be out some time this month.

My contacts tell me that making ICS for the Touchpad is almost like starting over. They have to get the drivers and all the goodies fixed before anything even close to stable can be released. It's sort of like when we waited for Gingerbread to come out. Man, it seemed like it took forever, but it was WELL worth the wait.
Patience, young ones.
Well I called HP and told them that it's cracking. They said they're going to send me a box that I can send the Touchpad back in and they'll fix the casing or give me a new one. I think I might end up getting it replaced, not touching it for fear of possible cracking AGAIN and wait to see what we're gonna get with ICS. Since we have all month to wait anyway it's a good time to send this Touchpad back to get it replaced. I just need to make sure I uninstall all the android based stuff and reset partitions so they don't see what I did.
why would anyone care about the TouchPad when new tablets are coming out

Here comes THAT thread: Jelly Bean?

Alright, everyone.
My Atrix 2 just died on me. Well, didn't die, the screen cracked open, long story.
Basically, I need a new phone.
However, because the Atrix 2 STILL hasn't gotten ICS, I swore to never return to Motorola. Yeah, it's not 100% their fault that it's taking them so long, but seriously? It's become really annoying.
So I promised to ONLY buy Android products that have the word "Nexus" in their title, phones that get DIRECT updates from Google without wait and without alterations.
Problem is, I was gonna hold out on the Galaxy Nexus since I feel like a new one must be on the horizon.
Then I heard of the Atrix HD, which, like the other Atrixes (Atrice? Atrici?) has a very amazing starting price of $100.
And now Motorola mobile is owned by Google, right?
So, the TL;DR version of it is this:
Is this phone likely to see timely and consistent updates from Google? I know it just came out, but you guys are really great at what you do, so I'm wondering what your predictions are. Is this phone likely to see Jelly Bean at all in the near future?
I'd like to buy a phone that is future proof to AT LEAST Jelly Bean.
Thanks
The updates still come from Motorola. The acquisition doesn't mean anything to the updates. But this is probably one of Motorola's flagship phones now, so it'll have to get at least Jelly bean.

according to what i've read, MB models are midrange, XT models are flagship. Regardless of this being the most powerful at the moment, it's mid range. There will be a Droid RAZR HD that will surpass this quickly with an XT model number.

That can't be right. When the Atrix 4G launched it was the top of the line Motorola phone, the first dual core phone and won best of CES 2011. Anyway I'd have to agree with the previous poster it will eventually receive JB.
From my understanding, any device that runs ICS will be able to run JB
Well the only company that has conformed jellybean on there top of the line smartphones is htc!! And they did that yesterday only!! So i will give motorola few more days before hearing about jelly bean upgrade!! And we should understand only phone that has jelly bean is galaxy nexus!! But since motorola mobile is part of google now so we can expect faster upgrade cycle!! And mostly vanilla experience to!!

I'm pretty happy with ICS, so I'm OK waiting a little while for JB. Motorola will probably release it in 6 months, then AT&T will delay it for 6-9 more...not that it's really OK, I wish updates were faster. They need to cut out the carrier-specific modifications!
My wife just today got the new Motorola Atrix HD. So far I think it is a very nice phone and hope she gets great service from it. I to hope that the Jelly Bean update is pushed out for this phone. Only time will tell.
According to this, the Motorola Defy will get JB and it's reasonable that the newest devices will too...
Jelly Bean for the MyTouch 4G Slide, Desire HD, and Motorola Defy
***EDIT***
Just noticed it's a ROM so I'm assuming this is specially made b/c of it unlocked? But here is another quote...
"These devices are all a little older than some would expect to be receiving ports. But if the HTC HD2 can get it, newer devices should be able to as well."
Motorola Defy is still running on an old modified Froyo kernel, seeing as how they never even got gingerbread.
Quarx ported Jellybean over, however.Motorola has long stopped during about the defy

Your best bet is a to go for a Nexus device it you want something that is close to being future proof. I kind of know what you are going through with waiting for a new nexus phone part of the reason I didn't drop $350 GNex. The best advice I can say is go with the AHD for now, you can even get one for $50 on contract from best buy or amazon as long are you don't mind going with the new tiered plans.

The good news is that AT&T isn't forcing you onto the new shared data plans...yet. I figure they'll eventually decide to do that to keep up with Verizon, but for now they look a little better because of it.

Doesn't BestBuy charge you a Restocking Fee if you decide to return anything, especially a phone? Plus certain electronics only have 15 days instead of 30 days to return an item. If this is still true...save yourself the headache and get it from Costco (at their store or online with free shipping) and they give you free accessories (see my post about Costco just a few days ago).
If BestBuy has changed their policy, good but I can't tell you how long it's been since I've stepped foot in their store because of this. It's maybe part of the reason why they're struggling with their stores and trying to hang on to their mobile wireless departments.

OK.. so this thread turned from a JB discussion to Best Buy? LOL. I'm about to pull the trigger on either the AHD or GS3 and am having a tough time deciding due to the JB issue and a few others. From the sounds of most of the comments here, it doesn't appear likely that Moto will offer the JB update, or am I missing something? The GS3 is a nice phone, but the screen on the AHD is far superior and the build quality of the Moto phone seems solid. What do you guys in this forum think? AT&T will sell me either phone for 50% off, no activation fee and a credit back to my account for the CA sales tax too

You strike me as someone who intends on modding ur phone, running roms and other mods or apps that require root so that makes the decision very easy, the GS3. It comes with an unlocked bootloader, root was gained before the phone was even released, the dev support is massive, aftermarket support is amazing, and JB is coming soon! Dont like the battery life? You can use a higher capacity battery if you choose. The camera is lovely! Especially since you're gonna be getting it for half off, that makes it a no brainer!

Gadgetz.... thanks.. Actually your assumption is a little off base and that's due to me having been an iOS person for the past 4 years. And it's also the reason I'm drawn to Android, and even moreso after having watched the various vids about JB and Google Now.. simply amazing new version of Android.
So if I understand what you're saying, you're recommending I go with the GS3 for various reasons, regardless of me not liking the blue tint on AMOLED screens. And I can understand this to some degree. Also, when you install Nova I thought it only changed the look of the home pages and icons. Are you saying that it completely changes the UI including the notification bar where you can toggle on/off for Bluetooth, GPS, Wifi, etc? Sorry, but I'm a noob. I do like the new garnet red color on the GS3 but all of them are fingerprint magnets as you know. What case and screen protector do you recommend? Already found a high end, class 10 32mb microSD for $35 on eBay.

As far as I know, it's not necessary to unlock the bootloader to root your phone, in fact, I rooted my AHD BEFORE I unlocked the bootloader. As for the ways, you can use MythTools, just search them on the forum.
See above.....though you're lucky because it's much easier to root these days. Anyone remember when we were doing Samba mounts with Linux for root?
Your phone has to be rooted to unlock the bootloader, and I'd advise you to unlock your bootloader now. It's easy and it can save your ass if anything goes wrong with the phone.
There's no reason not to unlock the bootloader unless you can't because it's a work phone or warranty reasons or whatever.
Warranty issues aside, almost every part for this phone can be found for real cheap and the hardest repair is a cracked digitizer or lcd screen, both of which can be done by anyone for $20 in parts and 30 minutes of time. Only thing you might not easily find is a motherboard, but a broke screen used Atrix HD can be found on ebay for cheap and the board swapped from it.

I picked it up about 1 year ago for 99 cents. Gonna have it for a year longer until the AT&T contract is up. Maybe longer than that if I don't see any phone that's really worth buying.
/I'd really like it if they took the Atrix HD, made the screen a bit bigger, and gave it the X's cpu and whatnot.
//There really aren't that many large screen phones with the durable feel that my Motorola phones have.

I'm usually able to get a full days worth of crap in with the current KK roms, less if I'm on the internet a lot, but for just music, maps, and phone calls, I can get up to 2 days on a single charge with the EB20. But yeah, I agree...the EB40 should be the regular battery and there shouldn't even be a Maxx version...
Crap battery is the trade off for thinner phones that act as a fashion statement....I don't think any of us are that vain and would prefer a long lasting brick over a short lasting cd case. Blame Apple and hipsters.

Well, without internet It could last more than a day but I use it most of the time. I wouldn't complain too much about it If I could just buy the EB40 but... It doesn't ship to my country. so I guess I'd need to get a new phone soon. I'm pretty sure It won't be a hipster thing.
And since I have no money, I'll be with my AHD for a while, Lol.

Same here, except the shipping part . That sucks. I picked the Atrix HD for function over fashion....could have got a GS3 at the time, but I don't want a plastic Samsung. Hell, I've only had one friend that's actually liked their Samsung phone and that's a buddy with a Note 3 (and he'd like it if it felt more durable as well as not liking the OS tweaks...his previous phone was a RAZR HD Maxx and he liked that OS)

Well, the kevlar back looks really sexy. I wouldn't like a plastic samsung phone, even though a lot of people likes It, people's tastes are weird... The only thing I like of samsung is the #GALAXY11 Lol

[Q] trade S5 +$200 worth it?

Hey all!
Curious for this of you using the Nexus 6 if you're happy with it, pros and cons, etc.
I have Craigslister wanting my Galaxy s5 plus $200 for his Nexus 6.
From everyones experiences over the last few months, if you were me, would you make the switch?
is it worth the switch with that cost involved?
or am I better off sticking with my S5 for now?
Just curious if the Nexus is as good as the reviews say it is and if it's worth an already great Android phone plus some cash,,,Thanks!!!
I'd do it. I upgraded from the S5 and have never been more happy. Will never buy another Samsung phone again. Pure android is enough reason for me.
I really can't comment on the monetary side as I have no idea what you paid for your S5, but do I think the N6 is a better phone, for sure. It's pure Android and Android L is as good as it gets. This is the first Android phone I've owned that I've not wanted to install a custom ROM onto and only feel the need to root for a few useful apps. The only downside for you is the camera in some ways will be a step back. Yes, it has OIS and daylight photos turn out perfectly fine with the N6, but it isn't the greatest when it comes to low light photography. Could this improve in the future? Sure, we've seen other Android phones get camera updates that were quite significant. The speakers will be a huge step up from the S5. Their loud, very loud and that goes for calling also. You won't be having any issues when it comes to ear piece volume when it comes to making calls.
I will warn you, the phone will feel massive in your hand when you get it. I had doubts about even keeping mine when I bought it since I have smaller hands. After about a week, I got the hang of operating it one handed when I need to. It's a bit of a stretch to reach the opposite end of the keyboard, but you get the hang of it.
Vaxick hit all the right points. The part about the custom rom is subjective though. I prefer custom roms and the latest ota hasn't psyched the memory leak that is in lollipop. Most custom roms include it already.
As far as the price, the s5 is $609.90 right now with a retail price of $660 according to t mobile. So that person is ripping you off with the price, you're better off just buying a nexus 6 that is new from the play store or from Motorola or your carrier and sell the s5 by itself.
Plus, I don't really trust buying from other people without any sort of third party protection. It's very easy for someone to report the phone stolen after they sold it to you for a couple days and then your phone is rendered useless when you paid for it.
Youre better off just selling the s5 and buying a nexus 6 from somewhere more reputable.

Thanks for the input! On a side note, I always meet the person at a carrier brick & mortar store to run the IMEI and everything to make sure it's all legit. I'm a 2 thumber when it comes to typing and owned a Note 4 a couple months back I think I can used to the size. Def want to get into Lollipop and want a more pure experience than TW gimmicks. If the camera can hold up to the G3 I had (which I though was really, really great) I think I may take the plunge. I'm not due an upgrade and can't really shell out the whole $650 right now, so I may take a little hit on the cash and go for it. Thanks again.

Well either way, if you're going to be trading up your S5 + $200.... thats more than $650 in value if you think about it.
Motorola and depending on what carrier you have, they have financing options where you can pay it off in monthly intervals.
Even if the IMEI did checkout, they can call up their carrier and report the phone stolen days later. There's been numerous nightmare stories on Reddit and XDA where they've purchased a phone from a meetup via Craigslist and then days later the phone was blacklisted. From that point onward, you're pretty much out of luck as you have no "proof" that you actually bought the device other than your word.

Conflicted

I've been reading the several threads on this forum, and on the regular Verizon S6 forum, yet still remain on the fence about forking over a large sum of money for this device. Forgive me for my rambling but any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
I've been using smartphones since 2007, starting with my windows mobile XV6800 (htc). Been tinkering with them, and unlocking my phones even before Android devices were available. Touch Pro II, Dinc, Tbolt, GSIII, and now HTC one (m7) Of all these phones, by far, the GSIII was my favorite. It had such great dev support, and root/bootloader unlock was achieved within a few months of it being out. M7 was a bit of a hassle to root, and gain S-off, but still doable. But now, all I am reading is that it is very likely GS6 will never get rooted (at least us poor saps on Verizon). Another caveat: I still have unlimited data, and have been paying full price for my phones since GSIII so don't want to make an impulsive purchase by any means. So my question is this: given the technology that is available now, is there any advantage to unlocking this phone other than flashing cleaner debloated ROMS, or custom kernels? The WiFi tether can be accomplished via FoxFi, and there is a working debloat tool floating around. For some reason, I cannot wrap my head around paying a large sum of money for a device and not being able to modify it to my liking. Considering other phones such as M9, or LGG4, that might be more rootable but I'm just not feeling the coolness factor on those as much as GS6.
What I remember about the GS3 is that root was achieved before the bootloader unlock. It took quite a bit of time but eventually we were able to flash an unencrypted aboot.img to the appropriate partition when it was leaked by an insider, and voila, we were unlocked. I'm assuming that resource is not available to us anymore.
I'd love to hear some opinions on this from other flashaholics that have taken the leap and gone with this locked down device.

I have had quite a number of phones (as you can see from my signature lol) and flashed more than you see there. I enjoy toying around and changing to my liking. With that being said, I went and got this device because I loved the edges and the look. I think the themes that Samsung has allowed give you some of that customization ability. Though you can't uninstall apps or alter some things, Idk, there was just something about it I loved.
I don't think we are going to see an unlocked bootloader anytime soon, or a root either, but it's still a great device in my eyes.

Thanks! That's the direction I'm leaning.
I always say if you are conflicted, then the answer is no. Pretty much always.

Life isn't about being safe and reserved, it's about throwing yourself out there, getting banged up, and then doing it all over again.
I say, if you're conflicted, then go for it... It's always better to have learned from an experience than to say 'what if' or 'I should've'...
Yeah it's cash but so what, the biggest risk here is disappointment; you can always sell the device.
*If you want an example, ask me about the time while on vacation I got stranded in Reno after someone stole the entire contents of my bank account... So with no money, gear, or a plan, I decided to hitchhike to Burning Man with an Irishman, an Mexican and a polyamorous Swiss couple I met at a grocery store. I can assure you good times were had and yes... At the beginning I was most assuredly conflicted.
Could not disagree more. But whatever, I don't really care of he buys an S6 or not. Lol
I'm open to all opinions here. I'm currently on m7 and I abhor the stock software, while the latest aosp ROMs have been incredibly buggy. Just itchy to get a new phone that is actually functional. Thanks for the advice.

I don't know if this is the best phone I've ever had but it's by fast the best Samsung device I've ever had. Go for it!
I posted earlier but wanted to give an update:
After 2 weeks this is definitely the best Samsung Galaxy I've ever had. It's fast, responsive, and I still oogle the screen and it's curves. I don't even think about rooting or anything because with the themes and Nova Launcher it's a whole new phone. My battery is actually really good too which is just another bonus. I say try it if you are conflicted. Worst case you can return it on the 13th day and you only lose a little money.

I came from some rooted stuff myself, but aside from a few things that I had on my Galaxy Nexus with Sourcery ROM, the main advantage that root gave me was the tethering. FoxFi solved that on the Edge. If I want to change up the look on my phone, I can throw another launcher on whenever, icon packs, etc, and none of those require root. So I was also sitting on the fence until launch, and then it dawned on me ... what would root REALLY give me, that I can't find a workaround not anyway? Do I want root just for the sake of being able to? Sure there are still some apps you can't take off altogether, but with the 64g version, I'm not going to see a huge chunk of space taken out by them, and with a 3rd party launcher, I can just hide them altogether. That's actually the only main complaint about stock, is that I can't hide them in the stock drawer.
All that said, I'm VERY happy with the phone as it sits. Such an improvement over my G2 (which was still a great phone for me til the day I traded in), that giving up root options (at least for now, even if forever) was a trade-off well worth taking.
Thanks for all the feedback. I broke down and ordered the 128 GB model in black. Trading in my old smartphones will help with the cost. They said I'll receive it on Friday ☺

You made a good choice, as far as I'm concerned. I've been crash flashing a hell of a lot longer than my "joined xda" date would lead you to believe, and while I will ALWAYS miss the days of uninhibited GS3 flashing and I found myself doing it less and less as phones got better.
That being said, I still want root - and will still hold out hope that we'll get it. I imagine we will, but it will be a while and I think it's important for all of us to temper our expectations when it comes to that. Just enjoy this beautiful, unique device and try not to let it get you down.
Not to mention there's still plenty of new(er) devices (tablets, phones, etc) that can and will always be unlockable/rootable ... so you can get your kicks with them while you wait!
Welcome to the GS6E family!
