Please help, im having problem flashing ROMs - Galaxy S III Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone, I hope someone could help me with my problem.. So here's the thing, I have an S3 Mini (yeah is 2015 and i still using that POS phone (piece of...) but I live in Venezuela and unless you're rich or sucking the [email protected]$ of someone in the goverment, buying a new phone these day's it's almost impossible).. Getting back to topic, I want to flash a different rom than the stock one, I have my eyes on a MIUI one a saw the other day (yeah I like MIUI) and here's the problem, I tried to flash other ROM's before even that MIUI one that i just tould you about, and every time the phone do the first run with the ROM the Back and Menu buttons simply doesn't work at all, only the home button.. I already read other post of people with the almost the same problem but still can't find any answer, so I hope that this time is different.. What I did find was that the problem is and im almost sure that that's the problem, is with the kernel, because every ROM that I flashed is based on android 4.4.4 and with a custom kernel, and ofcourse my phone is stock with the stock kernel, here's some stuff you may want to know:
Model N°
GT-I8190
Android Version
4.1.2
Base Band Version
I8190XXAMG4
Kernel Version
3.0.31-1332988
[email protected] #2

Compilation Number
JZO54K.I8190XXAMG4
You may want to know that i have the phone rooted and with a custom recovery (TWRP 2.8.0.0) and all of that i did it without ODIN or Kies, for rooting i don't remember exactly what i used, but i think it was and apk that comes from here on XDA, that roots the phone with one click, and it worked because since then i never had any issues.. And for the custom recovery I think i flash it via Download mode or something like that.. The thing is that i don't remember at all using Odin or something for doing any of that (rooting, recovery and flashing a ROM).
So can you help me? do i need to use Odin to flash that MIUI rom in order to avoid getting my Back and Menu buttons damage? or what can I do? I really want that ROM I hate the stock one (i honestly hate Samsung but im stuck with this phone for now -.-)
Thank you! and yeah sorry for bad english blah blah, is not my first lenguage

[Q] And entre ye mega n00b...

OK, so I proper n00bed myself here... I downloaded sgs flash or something off the android market (it has the picture of a little penguin sat down) and it basically is meant to flash stuff easily.
So then I had Darky's v10 Extreme edition RC3 on my phone, selected it to flash, and let nature take it's course.
It went Tsunami on my ass.
Basically everytime I turn it on, it shows the samsung galaxy s logo, but then it switches to essentially, a broken screen. In which I mean, it's all different coloured pixels and you can't make anything out.
I'm using a powermac G5 from the stone age, in which heimdall doesn't work as it's not intel based, and my dad has a windows laptop containing nothing like Kies or Odin etc.
So yeah I ****ed it, anyone any advice or anything? Cause I'm real stuck right now lol!
Thanks in advanced.
OH it's version XXJF3 I think, and is the Samsung Galaxy S I9000 international version, should that be any help.
Hey man,
Can you still get into download mode?
Try flashing the stock JVK with bootloader.
I'm not sure about Mac operating system, but you can install the SGS drivers on your fathers Windows machine.

Hey buddy, Yeah I can still get it into Download mode, but I'm super new at all this, so JVK and Bootloader just went straight over my head haha.
Alright...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011901
That's the JVK thread. Read the directions... twice if you have to.
This is Perka's file stash.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=984588
Enter the file stash and look for the Software folder.
You'll want to download Odin, and Samsung driver.
The Bootloader is the way that your phone boots up before any other firmware runs...think of it as the BIOS of your phone.
SO just like corrupting the BIOS will kill a PC, if your Bootloader gets fragged, you have a very expensive rectangular hockeypuck instead of a phone. There is almost no way to brick your phone, other then damaging the Bootloader.
The fact that you can go into Download mode means your Bootloader is fine, so your phone is also fine...it just needs the right software installed on it in the right order. As long as you can get into Download mode, you can use a tool called ODIN to load software onto it.
JVK is the 2.3.3 (Gingerbread) firmware that was leaked, and likely not the best thing to start with.
I would start by looking at a thread about a ROM called Darky's Ressurection. It is designed for just the situation you are in...a chance to start again. ON that thread you will find very clear instructions onhow to use ODIN to do it, and then from there you can go onto whatever ROM you want.
Also, FYI, I think what you downloaded from the Market was SGS Kernel Flasher, which just flashes kernels, not full ROMs. A Kernel is a piece of software that controls the hardware functions just like in Linux proper, and affects connections, battery life and CPU behavior. In short, the Drivers. If you tried to flash a full ROM with SGS Kernel Flasher I am surprised it worked....but if it did, then yeah, total meltdown.
Remember, as you will learn, when people talk about flashable firmware on the SGS it is in four sections...
Kernel: The layer connecting the hardware to the software, the drivers
Modem: The phone connections/bandwidth
CSC: The carrier, region and APN info
ROM or PDA: The operating system itself (the Libraries and Application Framework).
There is also a fifth that is not essential...
Theme: Changes the framework to customized icons/graphical appearance.
Those may all be combined into a single flashable package, or split into sections to be flashed individually....but you will learn all that as you go.
Good luck and have fun. As long as you have a solid bootloader, you are golden.
Thanks for all the feedback guys! I just booted my dads laptop and am about to embark on the journey of phone-saving-ness.
I'll let you know how it goes.
Success!
Ok my phone is back up and running! it didn't take hours by the way, but I've been to the shops and all that jazz...
A few real quick questions though, could someone please explain the following below? Just so I know where I stand with what I've now got? I'd be massively greatful... Cause I don't know what firmware version 2.2.1 is... Aha.
About phone:
Firmware version 2.2.1
Baseband version I9000XXJPY
Kernel version - 2.6 32.9 #voodoo_stable_5.4
Build number - Darky's v9.2 Extreme Edition
Thanks for all your help guys, especially for being so quick! It makes me happy to know that with all the crisis in the world, there is at least one community up for helping each other out =]

2.2.1 is updated Froyo and is a great firmware. In time we will all move up to Gingerbread, which will likely be 2.3.3.
The Baseband is your Modem file, and JPY is the standard modem for the UK and Europe. For me it used too much battery but lost of people have no problems with it. It is very very stable.
The Kernel is SuperCurio's Voodoo kernel as installed by Darky's ROM. The Build number lists the ROM you are using, in this case, Darky's v9.2.

[Q]about rooting/installing rom/kernel SGS. newbie here.

well im kinda new to SGS. i currently use Go Launcher EX as for my phone to look good. and install some games/apps.
what i want to know is what is the best root / kernel / rom. and what should be done first? updating my firmware to gingerbread or installing/flashing root/kernel/rom?

BUMP!! >.<
Look around some custome ROM to flash and lagfix it, after that you have gain root permission and many stuffs u can play around
What's the best way to root stock galaxy s with 2.3.4?
First of all you have to download a 2.3.4-firmware (I'd suggest JVS, it's 2.3.5) and then flash it with Odin (you know how? If no, just let me know and I'll explain it ).
After that just look for a kernel that fits your firmware and also flash it with Odin (PDA-filed) and you're done.

Should be fine with it, can you direct me to the Odin rom in question please? I take it that its pre-rooted with clockwork recovery?
You could post the steps as it's for a friend and I can direct your post to him.
Hey guys I have a related question regarding kernels, posting here to save creating more threads.
I've come from Froyo 2.1.1 with Voodoo Kernel. Only reason I've updated to JVR 2.3.4 is because I've read this topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1225879 and realised I can have glorious Voodoo sound again on newer firmware.
So I've gone ahead and followed this guide to update firmware: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1139050
However I was unsuccesfuly in installing madrooster's kernel, through Odin I semi bricked and through CWM it gave an error. Perhaps because I am not rooted? However I was successful in installing Dark Core 2.6, I read that this had Voodoo sound but upon installing the Voodoo control plus and running it, no controls were available. It said phone needed to be rooted to load the driver....I'm really lost, I need help
Tried to flash kernel - Think I bricked phone
I tried to flash a dark core kernel using SGS kernel app. Phone rebooted and showed funny colours on the screen with a robotic voice giving commentary every now and again. Now just keeps rebooting and showing random colours on the screen. I have not backed up the phone, but contacts etc are on google. Can anyone help?

Captivate flashing to stock i9000 rom Pls help

Hi
Just bought my first android - captivate. Its on firmware 2.2 build froyo.uckb1 baseband i897uckb1 and kernel ver 2.6.32.9.
I wish to install samsung galaxy s i9000 gingerbread stock samsung rom on this. So, downloaded firmware I9000DDJV9 ## 2.3.3 2011 July
I9000ODDJV9
from sammobile.
Used clockworkmod recovery. Booted by holding vol up down and power. Did back up, reistall package, factory reset, partition wipe and update from zip.
It gave message opening file..installing..
After that it just seemed to get stuck. Half an hour passed and nothing happened.
What have I done wrong. Pls advise. Fortunately, I removed the battery botted into clockwork and restored.
Thanks
where to begin?
first of all:
you tried flashing a rom intended for ODIN/Heimdall in CWM
secondly, DO NOT flash straight i9000 firmware from sammobile on your captivate!
screen rotation will not work, home/back buttons will not work properly, there will be no voice when you make a call, and worst of all, you will be flashing i9000 bootloaders!
do not do it. we really do not want to have you opening another thread about you bricking your phone for doing something so stupid.

Thanks for saving me. Can u sugest any custom i9000 based gb rom for captivate. This is my first android and I am trying to learn...
You'll have to read First and last few pages of the threads and get an inclination of what people are saying about the ROM. Noone can tell you what you'll like the best, its all subjective.
On that note: I hear mosaic is nice
Lmao

Because I wanted to use Captivate outside of the US, I was also looking for ways to flash i9000 roms.
I found some modded roms, most of which were odin based, but none of them worked properly. After multiple bricks, I just gave up and installed CM7 instead. It works like a charm without any problems and it's not missing any functionality from the i9000 rom.
I just resurrected my captivate. I think I am going to flash CM7.

why do you need i9000 rom for outside US use? the only difference between i9000 rom and i897 roms are that i9000 supports HSUPA....everything else is same..
ofcourse i9000 has more features....but to use it outside US, you just need to unlock it...

[Q] Various questions / doubts concerning the i9000

Hi everyone,
I have since a week a Samsung Galaxy S (I9000) and I find it a bit different from my previous device (HTC Desire GSM), so I am having some question and doubts concerning what I have done so far on the phone after reading many threads in this great forum.
First of all, when I got the phone, it had an operator layer, so I wanted it to have a completely stock rom. Hence, I flashed using Odin the phone using those files:
CODE_I9000XXJVU_CL851880_REV03_user_low_ship.tar.md5
MODEM_I9000XXJVU_REV_00_CL1092175.tar
GT-I9000-CSC-MULTI-OXAJVU.tar
The android version I have now is the 2.3.6, but I find it a bit (a lot) laggy, so I was wondering if this ROM is actually a stable ROM or a development ROM, perhaps can you help me choosing a more stable stock firmware?
Also, I am also having some concerns with rooting the phone. In fact, when I had my HTC Desire, there was mostly one method to root the phone (the most common method let's say) using unRevoked. But now I got really lost with the Galaxy S as the methods for rooting seem not only to be numerous, but to depend on the firmware I actually have on the phone. So I flashed a file in my phone that rooted the phone, but it seems to have a moded kernel with it. The file I used is the following:
CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVU_2.3.6-v4.3-CWM3RFS
Click to collapse
So I am wondering if there is actually another method to root the phone that does not involve flashing a custom firmware?
Also, I might go back to a MIUI ROM, but I wonder if by flashing another ROM with ClockWorkMod recovery, it will replace my actual kernel (which would be great) ?
I'd like to use the phone for a while using a rooted stock rom, with no alterations nor modifications; and then I will go back to using a MIUI ROM. So can you please help me with my doubts; I really don't like no knowing what I am really putting into my phone so I don't want to spend a week doing trial and error
Thank you all in advance and please forgive my noobism
If you flash a new ROM the kernel should be replaced but I don`t know for sure if it`s he same on Samsung like on HTC. I rooted my i9000 with unlockroot( just google for it) and the phone is stock rooted and I flashed speedmod kernel with heimdall in order to have CWM so I don`t have stock kernel either.
Thank you for your answer !
What android version do you have on your galaxy ? 2.3.6 ? Is it smooth ?
Perhaps I will try MIUI to check how it works on this device (it worked great on my HTC Desire with lower tech specs )

Help with kernel and firmware

I have looked, googled for sometime now with no answer. I used philz kernel ages ago along with a leaked Samsung official jellybean, the firmware was from Korea I think. Anyways, the phone works 100% but I have not used it since upgrading to the note II. I'm going to sell the phone but would like to flash back and install the official UK firmware just so the new owner has no issues. Also when I reset the phone it's in another language, which might put some buyers off, obviously you can change the language to English but still. The reason im having trouble is because the baseband and build number do not match any other I can find on the internet, which makes me think I may have messed up when I flashed, although everything works fine.
My device info is -
Model number - GT-N7000
Android Version - 4.1.2
Baseband version - N7000XXLSO
Kernel version 3.0.31-1042183
[email protected] #3
SMP PREEMPT Sat Mar 23 18.25:14 KST 2013
Build number - JZO54K.N7000ZSLO2
All the info I found showed a different build number or baseband... so I'm lost. Hopefully someone can help.
Please be nice...
Thanks
I was wrong, the firmware was from Taiwan i think, anyways... I flashed PhilZ-cwm6-XXLRK-XEU-3.99-signed... that was a long time ago. Hope that helps.
I found this kernel, is this ok to flash? PhilZ-cwm6-ZSLO2-OZS-5.06.1-signed
Where can I find stock official UK firmware? I have not checked yet but will look... just did not want to get ahead of myself.
Thanks again for any help.
head over to sammobile.com and search for firmware for UK and flash it via pc odin after doing all the wipes. before flashing make sure counter is set to 0.
excellent, so what about my kernel? i'm sure I need to flash another safe kernel because I think my safe kernel was replaced when i installed the official rom?
sorry, so just odin then... not to worry about the kernel?
