just looking for some input here. what does everyone think about the pros/cons of these two tablets? after everything's all said and done, which would you rather invest in?
The nook seems to have a much better screen and a more appealing form factor. it's also $130 cheaper.
the G tablet appears to have a mediocre screen but it already has the horsepower/expandability of tablets that will cost twice as much (ie. xoom). i know the xoom will shred this thing in benchmarks, but for all intents and purposes the g tablet can handle anything software-wise that's currently available with flying colors.
i'm assuming both will have a fully functioning port of honeycomb in the near future (whether official release or custom rom) so software-wise they will probably be pretty similar.
is the tegra 2 and added expandability of the g tablet worth the extra $ and putting up with the marginal display, or is the lower cost/better build-quality of the nook worth accepting the limited hardware? am i missing something in my comparison of the two?
would love to hear from the community on this debate.
How are you planning on using it?
I went with the Nook because I like the form factor, it has a great screen, and more than enough power for what I want it for (e-reader, browser, portable multi-media, simple games, etc). Lacking a mic port and decent sound are the only two real negatives, but headphones do sound quite good.
I don't yet consider tablets to be replacements for PC's or Laptops so far as doing any heavy lifting, but the NC can probably handle the majority of business and entertainment needs for most people (minus phone features, which *may* be partially remedied is Blutooth support is worled out by the awesome XDA people working on custom ROM builds...)

good question, and probably the main factor people will use to decide between the two.
for me, i originally liked the idea of the nook because i've wanted an ereader for awhile, and plan on using it to read magazines, books etc pretty often. but i also want to use it as a multimedia device- streaming video/movies etc. i like the idea of gaming on a device that is larger than my phone. i have lots of fun playing games on my droid x (my two faves are gun bros and dungeon defenders) and the potential for using a tablet device as a killer gaming console seems to be limitless. the G tablet seems to fit the multimedia/gaming niche better, but i think it will be inferior for e-reading because of the screen. i guess my question is: does the superior screen/e-reading capability of the nook (and lower price) outweigh the untapped hardware potential and video/gaming prowess of the G tablet?
I was shopping G-Tablet and Nook as well. In the end I wanted a smaller form factor that can be easily held for a period of time for reading. I'm not a big gamer so Nook is my choice.
I think you would miss Nook's screen if you pick the G-tablet! The IPS screen is just awesome.
Did you look at Tmobile G-Slate as well?
I've owned both... And honestly its hard to compare. Main reason is the size factor. That will ultimately be the deciding factor...
Reading on a 10 inch had its benefits, as well as drawbacks. Holding the Gtab for extended amounts of time is tedious. The quality of the screen (viewing angles) really does not affect ebook reading etc. Honestly unless its laying in your lap flat, you won't notice the loss of angle.
For gaming... There is no comparison. Tegra2 @1 ghz rocks even the most graphic intensive games.
So... I'd say the following in summary=
For heavy reading and light gaming, coupled with moderate productivity and light media... Go with the NC
For light reading, heavy gaming and moderate productivity & media... Choose the Gtab.
Its really a matter of personal preference... Depending on what your ideal usage looks like.

I'm coming off the G Tablet and still waiting for my Nook Color to come in, but I'll chime in with why I returned the Viewsonic.
Ultimately, it came down to cost and quality. There is a lot of hardware under the hood of the G Tablet, but for the $400 I paid, I regretted not just getting an iPad. It was really a build quality thing for me. I was willing to look past the horrendous viewing angles and the weird 3D effect in portrait mode, but I started getting some screen rippling, and the unit would kind of "creak" as if cheaply constructed. The rippling was so small that it didn't bother me, but it sure made me paranoid, because it showed up after just a week.
I will try to post after I've rooted my Nook and played with it a little while to give a comparison, but I'm pretty confident the screen is going to blow away the G Tablet. Probably build quality, too. I don't want it to come off as me hating on the G Tablet, because I really wanted to love it (it was a sweet cbr reader), but I couldn't risk having the thing crap out on me once the warranty ran out. For the money, if the NC dies after a year, I won't feel as duped out of my money and will still be able to replace it with whatever the new thing is.
I should also comment that I'll probably buy an iPad 2 later in the year so I have a big tablet for comics, movies and games and a smaller tablet for e-reading and light multimedia use. Because I do miss my G tablet for the multimedia uses.

The Quadrant benchmark for the Xoom is 1826. With Honeycomb and 1.1GHz overclocked kernel, I just got 1728 running the same benchmark on the Nook Color, so i'm not sure I'd call that "shredded"?
Side by side the NC screen destroys the gtabs mediocre screen. Dell streak 7 has a crappy 800x480 resolution and also bad viewing angles.
I returned the g tablet because of the screen and weight. I could have looked past the weight or delt with it but the screen angles were so bad it was a chore to use. anything beyond black text on white was almost impossible to see unless directly in front of your eyes. I really wanted it to work too...
now that I picked up a nc and running honeycomb I'm glad I made this choice. I am also really liking the size and portability of the nc. for $250 I just dont see how you could go wrong

quadrant isn't an appropriate benchmark to use when comparing these two devices. besides, when apps start coming out that take full advantage of the tegra 2 it won't even be a discussion. that's not even taking into consideration what the dev's around here will be able to get out of the xoom.

Agreed. Having owned one for a week, I'd say calling the screen mediocre is waaaaay too nice though. The NC is so much better.
While the Tegra2 destroys the NC's 530, it wasn't meant for that. I'd wait for the LG G-Slate pricing, etc. The XOOM is already a fail IMO due it's pricing, data plans and crippled wifi (until someone here at XDA remedies that). If either Tablet were to appear in a WiFi only capacity that'd be sweet too.

For me reading in portrait mode on gtablet was horrible. Was too long and the horrible viewing angles made it impossible to get proper screen without weird viewing artifacts.....returned it and got the nook.
For flash though, the gtablet ran as well as my laptop

I tend to disagree with this. Hardware is hardware, but unless there is software and a medium for the user to take advantage of the hardware it is as good as a piece of poop in your hands.
Perhaps, with better software, the GTab is a great option, but the screen is still lacking, big time.
For $249 you can NOT do better than the Nook Color. And with the 1.1gHz OC, it flies! As far as a gaming it runs everything I throw at it currently. That being said I still game more on my iPhone and iPad. Not because of the hardware but because of the software selection.
When we start seeing games like "Infinity Blade" on Android ... then I will sell my Apple products, until then I keep both.
The screen and portability won me over
I currently own an ipad and nook and did own a gtab. The screen on the gtab was what killed it for me. It was blazing fast, but get a tiny bit off center and the colors go straight to hell, a little further off center and it becomes unusable. The ipad and nook have amazing screens. I prefer the nook though for its hackability and size. Both the ipad and gtab are a bit heavy and awkward to hold for any length of time. For the money, you really can't do better than the nook right now.
OP: Just curious what you ended up doing, as I'm in a similar situation.
I want an android tablet but I'm tired of waiting for the "really good" tablets to come out. I would like to get something in the mean time until my ideal tablet is released sometime in the future.
I feel like the G tab could last me longer because it has Tegra 2 and a 10 in. screen, but the screen isn't great and is missing gps. The NC has a great screen but older slower processor and the screen is smaller. I plan on using a tablet in a variety of ways. Probably about an equal amount of reading, browsing, gaming and video watching. Another reason the NC is tempting is because it's cheaper and I'm not sure spending more on the G Tablet is necessary if I'm just going to upgrade again in the near future.
Anybody have insight on which one has better battery life?

I own both. If I were constrained to use only one, it would be the Gtablet. Here are the reasons:
1. Froyo is not stable on the NC. Some ROMs are okay but it's not completely stable.
2. The wifi is buggy. If you haven't encountered problems yet it's because you haven't been to a site with incompatible wifi routers. When I travel, I can't afford to have a device that won't allow me to connect. Do a search and you will see all the wifi problems. Here's one recently: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=986133
3. NC is stock eclair while Gtablet is stock froyo. Makes a big difference when it comes from the manufacturer. I know there are smart XDA guys/gals hacking at making froyo work on the NC. I doubt BN will have an update to Froyo - there's no business reason for them to do it.
4. Gtablet has a microphone and camera plus bluetooth.
5. If honeycomb (and I mean if) comes to NC and Gtab, the Gtab will have it in performance.
Good points. What is the most popular rom on the Nook Color?
I think froyo may be the most popular mainly because its safe. I for one love honeycomb. Even with all its little quirks and stuff but the pros far outweigh the cons to me

hi peeps,
At least in the 1Ghz cpu weight devision, is it still worth buying at ~US$545? i'm not that impressed with the past and current 1Ghz offerings. My main concern is software updates -- which, ironically, was why i hesitated buying the SGS a year ago. But then Samsung appears to have released a Gingerbread update ahead of everyone else( *cough* HTC *cough*), has even announced that it won't lock the bootloader, and appears to have a ton of custom ROMs and just as much "unofficial" developer support.
Then again, the projected price range of the dual core monsters coming in May isn't really that big; imho a US$100 price premium is well worth it for me.
I think as of right now, anyone who wants a phone should wait for the SGSII, but as for buying the SGS, im glad i bought it when i did (jan). The community make it what it is. If there wasnt custom roms to speed the phone up then i would have been bitterly disapointed with the lag of a stock SGS, yes gingerbread is quick but its been awhile in the making.
One year and another month different story SGS 2 on sale SGS 1 at a cheaper price .
jje
Nope. Save your money for SGS2 or dual-core HTCm whatever suits you.
I would definitely hang on for whichever dual core floats your boat, be it HTC or SGS II. As good as the SGS is (I love mine) it will struggle to compete with the heavyweight dual core handsets.
Get a Tegra 2 based device. See how much juice they consume though.
SGS 2 is silly big, well for me personally, there ought to be some constraints to limit overall size of device, afterall its mobile phones we're talking about. Bigger devices defeat the purpose of having a mobile phone and tend to look rather unprofessional, more like portable gaming devices.
I'm going to take the opposite opinion to many on here.

doesn't have dual core, waaa waaa my penis isn't big enough, go and buy 3 spare batteries to run the dual core SGS2, better still buy a laptop, because the only people I have seen with ANY kind of computing power problems are frankly assholes who could bring a cray to its knees in a week.

The next big revolution is going to be in battery tech, when you can get 5000 mAh into the volume and mass of 1000 mAh today, that will open new doors
thermal rejection of an SGS at full battery draining whack is already as high as you can go and stay healthy silicon wise.
just be grateful it ain't x86.... (speaking as someone who used to run 64bit MIPS Cobalt RAQ2's back in the day when they were the new kid on the block... wow, an empty pizza box with not even any heatsinks on the silicon...)
save your money for SGS II
i just bought mine last week. got it for around $470 (8GB version) in Vietnam. the reason i got it was mainly due to the great screen as well as the strong community developer support which coming from the Galaxy Spica is a BIG difference in the overall user experience. I love tech and love tinkering with my phone. I don't believe dual core will make that much of a difference unlike on a laptop/desktop where you really have to run multiple programs (note: antivirus). I know my SGS will be astounding as soon as the devs finish tweaking the heck out of the GB code!
If you are going to pay that kind of price (around 500$) and you care about updates, why don't you get a Nexus S ?
Same phone, slightly better and corrected hardware-wise. It is supported by Google and CyanogenMod.
I think it's worth considering buying second hand. I just bought a 1 month old handset for quite a bit less than a new one. It's in perfect condition. And I'll use it for the next year and then upgrade when the SGSII (and others like it) are down to a reasonable price. Rinse and repeat (too expensive to be on the bleeding edge all the time ).

I agree. SGS is still a great buy.
honestly, i do find dual cores a bit of an overkill for phones...but yeah, the price diff is just too close, esp. if you compare it with the G2X. dual core it is then. i just wish HTC(and all the other brands) would stop with the signed bootloader crap.
Then again, once the other dual cores come out, then the SGS drops to US$350...hmm...

I really don't understand why people need more than 16g, of course the option to have more and carry a larger collection is always good, but it's definitely enough. I think people are more worried about the feeling of "being limited". I have never used the cloud, and still don't plan to, unless it's urgent documents I need to transfer. I do plan on using it as a media consumption device- movies, ebook, shows, browsing etc.
Here's why
1) Put your music on the phone. This tab doesn't have cellular reception anyways, you will have your phone. Put all 10g's or however much music on your phone. It's easier to take out your phone, put in your pocket, and use as a mp3 player then to use a tablet anyways, much more convenient.
2) Apps will not take over 1g. So for 16g version, let's say you start from 14g. Minus apps you have 13g.
3) Ebooks, epubs, takes up basically NO space. You could put the entire collection of Game of Thrones, harry potter, hunger games, 30 books and it won't take up any space because they're all text files.
4) If you read comics, because they are big pictures, they might take maybe 2-3 g's. You can also put a small size of your favorite picture collection in it. So now we have 10 g's left.
5) Movies. A good quality movie takes 1G? You can have 5 movies on it. Why would you need more? Even on a long distance trip, will you finish all 5 movies? I don't understand the need to have your entire collection on the tablet, there's no need to put 20 movies on it, when you won't watch them all yet. We have 5g's left.
6) Television shows. Most television shows are 40 minutes long. They take up less space than movies. I watch a lot of shows- big bang theory, game of thrones, modern family. Just get the 300mb version, instead of the super HD 1g versions. It'll be enough for your 7 inch screen. With 5g, you can put 2 entire seasons of a show on your tablet. Or do like what I do, put the latest 5 episodes of different shows on it to have more variety.
That's it: now, what can you do with your 16g Nexus 7?
You have tons of books you can never finish, comics to read, 8 hours+ of movies to watch, 24+ episodes of shows to watch, and web browsing is always available.
Is this not enough? When you finish watching the movies or shows, delete them. Pretty sure the tablet will not be your only device, so refill after you finish! I think people are just greedy and want to put their entire collection of movies on it.. but I don't see why if you aren't going to watch them anytime soon. Not telling people how to use their tablets, and I understand it takes more effort to shuffle things into your tablet every once in a while. But I'm just saying, it's possible to have a 16g device and enjoy all the media consumption even without using clouds.
my bluray rips are 6GB. i'd love for you to tell me how to get 720p quality video down to 1GB.
Do you really need to watch bluray quality on a 7 inch tablet though?
Even if it was 6 g, ok, then one movie at a time then.
But really, you can put three 2g movies on the tablet and they'll be of the highest quality already. I dont think it makes that much of a difference on the 7 inch screen if you go up further.
No, i don't, but thats what i have my rips as. I'm not going to re-rip all my movies for one device. and the display is 1280x800, so 720 is the perfect resolution.
hence why OTG, or god forbid, a USB port is great. I can plug my 1TB hard drive into my Asus Transformer and i have all my media. On the Galaxy Nexus i can plug in a 32GB flash drive that can store 3-4 movies and up to 16 shows.
N7, right now. just the 16GB internal. which if the Gnex says anything, will actually only be 13GB.

You're kidding right? I have 6 gb of games and apps on my One X. I have a ton more purchased that I haven't installed just because I am trying to keep open space on my phone in case I want to load a few Slayer or Gojira albums on it. You can bet that my 16 gb N7 is going to be completely tapped for space within minutes of me getting it. I might keep 2-3 gb open for a movie or two but every other byte will be used up by games and apps.
I'm used to listening to my 20GB music collection. I don't want to split it up and download parts of it every day, I like a big playlist.

Ahh games, I forgot about that one. My biggest game is 200mb though, I guess I'm not really a games person, or haven't gotten into it yet.
But without games, how do apps take up space? Most phone apps are less than 20mb, and those are the big ones. Normal ones take like 1-4 mb.

Before you worry about running out of movies to watch, you need to worry about running out of battery. Your tablet won't last you for the entire 14 hours flight btw. Running out of movies should be the least of your concern.
Since your trip goes beyond reasonable usage of a tablet already (24 hours), it is reasonable that you will have to do more to sustain having entertainment on the tablet. You will have to stop somewhere to charge along the way. I hope the in between transfer time is long enough, otherwise your tablet will never have enough battery. I guess it is only fair that you need to bring an extra USB-OTG then.
I agree, an SD card would be very valuable for you in this instance. But I don't think a lot of people take 24 hour trips. I think for most people, 9 hours worth of movies (if you fill the 10g with all movies) should be more than enough until they can transfer files into it again.

Most long haul flights have power sockets in the seats especially on international flights (as long as you avoid US carriers ..shudder..) power has never been a problem.
When someone starts a thread generalizing ever users "use" of their products you have to expect this sort of response.

not only that but a New Trent 12000 would really come in handy for those flights.

Yeap, and that's perfectly fine.
I guess we can say if your usage is more out of the norm - e.g. you need more than 9 hours of movies in one go- then Nexus 7 isn't that good of an option for you. Or you could still always bring USB-OTG for extra storage.
But generally, for most people, 9 hours straight of movies/books/games should be able to sustain their needs. And again, we're not talking about the end-all super tablet here. This is $250, meant to be a cheap pick-up. Just saying people can still do ok with 16g, thats all.
Nandroid and Titanium backups can take a lot of space. Also, I like to be able to download new ROMs and flash from anywhere (wifi willing). Uploading/downloading from the cloud takes too long and is too inconvenient with large files. Most free cloud services have file size limitations or not much storage space. Using cloud services can be done, but it requires juggling multiple services and a lot of time wasted uploading and (re)downloading files.

lmao couldn't resist
I'd have to say, one of the reasons I really like technology in general is there are so many differing ways to use it depending on a users wants or needs.
A large portion of the music I listen to on my phone/laptop/tablet is ripped in FLAC. I'll admit, some devices definitely sound better than others, but even on my phone with my HD380 or HD595 headphones (or streaming over bluetooth via APTX, or using one of my USB DACs that I travel with on my laptop) the difference is apparent. Even my car speakers (11-speaker Harman Kardon setup) showcase the difference in audio quality.
One of the reasons I've preordered the Nexus 7 (16GB) is for car usage. Offline maps/navigation is nice for those longer trips, but it's moreso for playing my music over speakers, as well as bluetooth OBD-II connectivity and Torque. I also tend to keep a couple 720p reencoded blu-ray rips (my entire blu-ray collection is ripped without compression on my server at home) for when necessary.
Either way, I feel I'll be able to deal with only have 16GB worth of space (I'm using about 20GB for music on my phone), but I'd prefer more OR expandable storage.
One thing I've noticed with every device I've ever owned. I've filled up all available storage (current phone is 8 + 32GB, less than 10% available. Current laptop is 128GB + 128GB SSD storage, less than 10% available. Current server is 30+ TB (24x 2TB drives in Raid-Z2 in VDEVs of 8 drives each) and has 28% free because I JUST added 8 more drives to it since we had less than 1% free).
I love storage. I love data. I love technology. And I love that there are so many devices out there than can meet peoples needs.
On my Xperia play, i have a 32gb sdcard and i have almost filled that with games alone. Games like fifa need 2gb data alone...

Look no further than this:

You can still hit the movie bucket size quoted by OP and manage to fit more than 15 movies with decent quality - no 720p of course, but x264 can do magic

Here's why
1) Put your music on the phone. This tab doesn't have cellular reception anyways, you will have your phone. Put all 10g's or however much music on your phone. It's easier to take out your phone, put in your pocket, and use as a mp3 player then to use a tablet anyways, much more convenient.

I thought about this as a possibility.
Thing is, this is battery-inefficient for when you want to both use the tablet (say to read) and listen to music at the same time. Effectively, you're wakelocking two devices at once.
To conserve battery, I'd much rather use the tablet for doing both (even if doing so cuts down on the size of my collection). The tablet has a lot more battery to kill as well. Hence, the storage space is an issue.

I am an avid music listener and I don't really see that point. Listening to music on the phone hardly takes out any battery at all.. I've listened for maybe 3 hours, and it takes 10-15%? The reason is because the screen isn't on.. the screen/movies/games are the biggest battery killers. Music playback while the screen is off doesn't hurt that much. If you have your tablet for most of your gaming/browsing/movies, I think your phone would last many days and battery would not be a huge concern.
However, I'd understand why you'd want to only use 1 device at one time for convenience though.
I'm starting college next year, and I need a laptop! I better one than my current laptop anyways... I currently have an Acer Aspire S7 391 - purchased it used, and it just has too many cons that just don't make it worth the $600 I paid for it.
It gets too hot for Lap use, battery life is about 2-3 hours, the fan gets crazy loud... too loud for my high school classes, and the trackpad is jumpy, slow, and just.. terrible.
So I need a new laptop! Here are some things I would like to mention that may help tell you what I'm looking for.
1. Good Battery Life. A minimum of 6 hours.
2. Atleast a 1080p display. (Prefer touchscreen)
3. 13 inches minimum display size.
4. Slim, and powerful for it's size. I don't need to be editing videos or playing games, but being able to do some tasks that require a little more power would be nice!
5. The fan, if there is one, simply can't be loud. I don't know why this bothers me so much, it's fine if it's my desktop, but for a laptop, ugh..
I'll also be bringing my desktop to school, this Laptop will mostly be for taking notes, and being able to do all of my school "stuff" on a portable device, so I can work... anywhere!
Your suggestion doesn't need to match any of the specifications I mentioned, I'll certainly take a look at anything recommended!
Thank you so much!
(In-case it makes any kind of difference, I'm going into Business at an above average university, 30,000 students total)
I forgot to include a budget! haha! I'm willing to look into used versions of the laptops recommended as well, to possibly save a hundred bucks or so, I would say mu budget is just around $1,000. (Possibly being able to find it used for maybe $800 if any are available used).
Dell Inspiron 13 may be a fit for you.. If not the Surface Pro 3 was OK
I reckon surface pro, but if your looking for a bargain, look at some of the sub $200 Windows 8.1 tablets. Ad some accessories such as a keyboard, mouse and battery pack, and you could have a decent laptop replacement for under $300.
I would even suggest something such as the cube iwork7 dual boot tablet (android and windows 8.1) for ~$125USD from geekbuying
http://www.geekbuying.com/item/Cube...GB-32GB-HDMI-IPS-BT---White-Black-341909.html
This is all you really need for school imo, and after adding accessories such as a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, battery pack and usb hub, you could have a moderately powered computer for about $200.
I seriously considered doing this myself, but the school gave us Lenovo ThinkPad yogas (current model), which is also a good option.
Ive been wondering about this also. Im about to start my computer science degree this year.
Look into Asus. By far the best in terms of hardware and build.
I'm particularly fond of the N range, though those might be a bit too powerful for regular use. (still, €1299 for a laptop(N76VB) that can run Dragon Age Inquisition on Ultra at 58FPS is well worth the money to me.)

So looking at the note 10 designs it looks like its going to have the hole punch. ( which I dont like)
At the moment the note 9 8gb version is on sale at £649. Trade in of my 6gb version will get me £340.
Is it worth the £309 price difference to get the extra ram and storage and the hybrid sim version bearing in mind I'm going to stick with the note 9 until at least the note 11?
Not in my opinion, I doubt you'd notice the extra ram that much and you could buy an SD card for much cheaper if you really needed extra storage.

In my opinion, it depends on what you do with your phone...
Do you play heavy games or daily basis activities?
If only daily basis activities (Email, Gmail, Word, Excel, Facebook, Reddit, Telegram or others) then 6GB would be enough, my opinion only.

No, 6gb is enough
Save your money. Your existing note will be good until it dies. Companies keep adding minute changes to their "next flagships" to play with our minds to buy their new phones. They want your money is all it is. Keep your note 9. But it you have the extra cash then have at it.
I've had both and you absolutely cant tell a difference

Ram is random access memory and effects how many applications stay open in the background. If you're planning on running ten resource heavy games open at once maybe. Game performance would be much more heavily impacted by the GPU and CPU performance than by the amount of ram (which from 6 to 8gb would have no effect whatsoever I would guess). Unless you're planning on switching back and forth between two very intensive games I can't see why this would benefit you.
How about you instead tell me how it benefits game performance? Smart guy lol
I have 8/512 note 9, only reason is i need 2 things.. huuge storage and 2 sim cards...if no need for 2 sims i would get 6/128 and stick sd card inside

The current industry of smartphone tech reminds me of the PC age. Not to mention, when ram levels started increasing and folks kept closing out their background apps to "get the device to be faster." I still chuckle at those days.?

Manufacturers are trying to get us back to wanting more megapixels yet again; they got us hating bezels because our phone started to be good enough to keep for more than a year; they got us obsessed with the amount of RAM there is in our phones and how the CPU benchmarks. I've got a Note 9 and a Mi Max 3 and I honestly could happily use either of them day-to-day. Manufacturers in all industries have a duty to make us want to crave things, and they do a good job of it. To answer the question though - no the OP should not upgrade unless they have money to burn as RAM will have absolutely no difference on gaming performance or day-to-day performance - it's just a psychological up-sell to get people to get the 512GB model. Also did you really say you'd be effectively selling your Note for £349??

Yes that is the trade in price.
After reading lots of posts (as well as this one) about the 2 different models I'm going to stick with what I've got. I have a 256 sd card so I have plenty of storage and as regards ram unless your doing a speed test side by side I dont think I'm going to notice. I'm probably going to stick a sim only sim in September when my contract ends and hold out with the 9 until i either break it or something revolutionary comes out. Which i doubt.
Another thing that i think the 9 has in its favour is the fact that it DOES have a forehead and chin as when watching videos you dont cover any of the screen where as with a real edge to edge like the s10 and most probably the note 10 i think it will be an issue let alone the pesky hole punch!
Thanks for all the replies

I sometimes use an older iPhone and I really do love the bezels as far as usability goes. All the newer phones lead to me catching UI elements - for example I'm a big YouTube watcher and the only phone I've used recently where I never accidently skip videos when moving my phone around is the iPhone. The other downside to bezels being removed is that phones really do all look pretty much the same now.

As for RAM, whatever anyone says, it has no bearing on actual application speed - all RAM does is hold applications in memory. Apps are flushed from memory according to space and the particular memory setup the manufacturer implements. Some manufacturers throw loads of RAM at their devices but their battery management is so brutal that it's almost worthless.
Google themselves think 4GB is enough, and cynicism aside, they do actually write the OS, which the manufacturers don't. If anyone knows how much RAM is necessary it's Google IMO. I can't think what would motivate them to think otherwise. Unless you have applications hogging loads of RAM, the worst you can expect with less RAM is that an application you had open a while back has to re-open again. With 6GB of RAM this should rarely be an issue, and many apps freeze their state anyway
Tend to agree that you likely wouldn't see much benefit with extra RAM and I certainly don't think extra 2Gb at a cost of £300 is good value.
That said I can see the appeal of 512Gb internal storage versus 128Gb
If you really want an 8Gb / 512Gb Note 9 then wait until Note 10 is on sale, I guarantee Note 9 price will fall significantly and the difference to upgrade to 8Gb / 512Gb Note 9 will likely be less expensive.

Monitor your memory usage. If you never approach 6GB utilization, then you'll never gain anything with an extra two GB. Have you filled 128 GB with content you couldn't put on a $50 SD card?
