I want to give some context.
I have owned my Z1 since release on a contract. I have previously had the screen replaced twice and it worked fine afterwards.
However, I had dropped the phone resulting in the top of the screen cracking. Got it replaced by a local phone repair shop.
The result was a new phone screen, a white edge just over half way down the screen might be worth noting. The repair man said it was a warranty sticker on the screen they put in. (Sounds silly)
Anyway, the resultant problem is not exactly like what i've seen on many threads.
My phone now decides to press itself erratically. Usually after swiping and trying to press delete on the keyboard would it start acting up.
My remedy: Hard reset(Didn't work), factory reset(didn't work), upgrade from 4.4 to 5.1(I think, newest software) and to my surprise the issue remains. So after the repair man replacing the screen twice and ensuring that i'd done my best with little to no phone knowledge, I still have this problem.
There's many threads detailing problems, some linking to apk's that are "calibration software", some that say you can change calibration.ini but no helpful replies or expanding info on the threads.
Can anyone tell me if they've had any luck with this or anyone who has knowledge of what I should do next (E.g "there's no fix guy, you'll have to sell it and move on") as i'm starting to assume these screens are very tedious to deal with

Think again, before you purchase a new one or think you are capable of replacing it, when you're actually not.
Last week I was replacing a screen protector because the previous was getting dust underneath the corners. After replacing the screen protector I was not receiving any response from the touchscreen because I probably pressed down too hard on the screen. I proceeded with several soft resets and finally caved in to do a hard reset (which I hate performing because it is a pain reinstalling data, resynchronizing, and installing apps). After the hard reset touch screen was still unresponsive, which sucked because I arrived at the alignment screen.
So here is what I did. I opened the tilt screen and proceeded to push with little strength from the back side (where your sim card is placed) with my thumbs in a forward position, while gently massaging the screen with my remaining eight fingers. I then used those eight fingers, while proceeding to push outward with my thumbs, and pushed inward. Sure enough my screen was responsive again.
So before you decide to purchase a new digitizer try my technique because you have nothing to lose.
thanks for the cheap, but helpful technique
hope all is well hadn't seen you around for a while.
Interesting... does this make the device more fragile.. i.e. a slight drop or nudge and no response again?
Glad your device is working again!
It sure does look like a nice thalassotherapy for the phone anyway .
I don't understand why people are capable of replacing a digitizer. I replaced one.

I am more than capable of replacing one. At the time, I did not have a device I wanted to use as a backup because they were for sale. All I had available was a rinky dink Moto with hardly any contacts saved to my sim.
Over the past year I have read numerous stories on this forum and others while people applying their screen protector and suddenly their touchscreen was no longer working. Then as they were spending money and time replacing their digitizer, only to find out it wasn't as easy as they thought.
I was upset that my device wasn't working and figured, "hell I'll push it in the opposite position", which I did. The touchscreen works just as well as before.
I'm having the same problem (not responsive to screen taps), but I'm not quite getting the procedure you described. Are you trying to push the screen harder from the back side - and how much pressure are you using?
Hello all,
Just yesterday, I noticed something in my screen which I thought that it was a foggy screen from inside, so I thought that I'd leave the screen for the night, and let it dry. However, I woke up the next morning only to realize my screen stopped functioning, touch screen stopped working (please see attached files). Did someone experience a similar issue? Good thing I though squaretrade warrently when I bought the phone. I'm just worried they'll think its a physical damage. btw, should I restore everything to manufacturer settings? I installed ENERGY ROM. However, I wouldn't know how to do it since the touchscreen does not work.
Thanks in advance...
First, this looks like a collapsed digitizer.
You can try to pull the top layer away with duct tape, that might get you running again.
For warrant, if they refuse, fight them because it is a common issue with the Topaz. Search for "Newton Rings" or "Oil under screen" for many more posts related to this hardware failure.
You may want to flash back to stock before returning it, just to make sure they don't try to claim its software related.
To do this you would need to flash back to your stock ROM first, then go the the HSPL thread and and flash the relocker. You can do this without using your screen.
I would also take a good look at your warranty and if you can get away with permanently disabling it for a new device.
I'm glad I never bought the good looking TD2 and avoided all of this. There are tons of people complaining about this on the forum
Me too, I've only seen one Pure with this issue, but about 30% of Topaz with repeated failures even after repair.
Help/advice needed please?
My incredible S starting playing up with screen touches, didnt worry about it as it was sporadic. However I then lost the touch at the menu button, this prompted me to installMultitouch Vis Test and noticed that there was a double touch registration on the line up from the menu button. I then installed Screen Touch Test and this confirms there is a line from Menu button straight up the screen, as well as another line close to the left edge not registering any touch at all. The advice I am after is 1) is this a software issue as there is no visible damage, therefore do I go for a hard reset or 2)Is this a digitiser issue and do I go for a new digitiser (£50 from guy in the local shops or £15 of ebay and do it myself)
I have not rooted the rom the phone is all stock and not dropped or damaged it recently.
Cant be bothered with the pain of hard reset if I dont have to, but if it saves a digitiser I have no problem with that then. Equally dont want to get a new screen only to discover it needs a hard reset.
Thanks in advance.
Maybe you should try to boot into safe mode. You can do it by holding up or down volume button (don't remember which, try googling it) on boot when HTC splash screen appears (release power button first). This mode will start your phone without loading any application you installed. This way you can see if the issue is made by an application.
If it still don't work I would highly recommend doing hard reset. It is not that much complicated to reinstall after a hard reset. You can use an app like titanium backup to backup and then restore all your apps. I'm sure many people here can tell you that a hard reset is nothing because we are used to do it every time we flash a Rom and I for example do it at least 1 time a month.

Fixed screen, aftermath was damaged digitizer, however after a few days the digitizer kicked back in and worked fine. After a few month the screen became unusable. Long story short, I didn't replace the digitizer and it only got worse so I recommend that you replace it. If you do, I highly recommend getting the special tool for separating the glass and lcd from the housing.

Oh well very valuable lesson learned!! I bought a cheap £15 digitizer and tools from ebay and took time out on a saturday to replace it. First off the little tool to seperate the screens broke on first use...managed fine following the youtube videos. Separating the two screens was a bit tricky but eventually managed it. Then replaced the screen and connected/built it all back together. Switched it on and watched as it was obvious I had damaged the LCD, either during separation or putting it back together. There was no obvious damage but it was goosed.
Decided to take it to the local guy at the shopping centre with the little booth to see how much to replace both. Was quoted £80-85 and told it would be end of the week.....ah nearly a week without my smartphone! Got a text message on Monday lunchtime telling me its fixed and that would £70, got there and he only charged me £65. Phone display is better, phone is more responsive and less sluggish that it was before too, and this was without a hard reset. Very happy as was dreading a hard reset.
Lesson learned, dont attempt to replace screens on own, leave it to the guys that change about 30-40 each day.
I presume the sluggishness of the phone was related to the screen problems also. Was contemplating a new phone, but can hold off now until Windows Phones 8 get their act together and one of the manufacturers decide to make a phone that fits my needs.
Thanks for advice guys.
I have no idea what's happened but the screen on my Z is completely unviewable. Was in my pocket, got a text took it out and it's dark (backlit making it appear grey) but with lines moving all over the place. Every now and then I get a brief glimpse of my home screen but then it disappears. The phone itself appears to be working but I can't see anything at all on the screen.
I've tried a reset (pressing vol+ and power button) but same issue right from the start (even on boot the sony logo appears as lines all over the place).
I suspect it's a hardware issue and i'll have to take it back but any thoughts before I go down that route?
Phones4U are going to do an exchange for me so problem solved but it does make me nervous about any future problems. Not even a month old yet and it's not like i've been throwing it around.

I do understand. We have to accept though that every devise we purchase there is always going to be some that are faulty. When it happens to us we tend to think its a devise problem that affects the whole range. Some people actually decide not to purchase that brand again meaning from phone to TV etc?
I am an Asus fan yet the hell I had with their range of tablets could have turned me against the brand. It didn't I own some very good Asus products.
These forums tend to be negative places as an awful lot of members only join a forum because they develop a problem. If we read every thread published here it would be impossible to purchase any phone from any brand as every single one of them has some problems.
You must, obviously, return your phone for an exchange. I hope all goes well with your replacement. It should be fine.
So one day after working out I took out my phone from my pocket and basically the screen wont turn on at all. upon further inspection it looks like that there is a very VERY minor scratch UNDER the screen ranging from right above the home button from the left to right corner. it is barely visible and you have to look at it in the perfect angle just to see the crack. I am freaking out and not sure what I should do. The phone will turn on and everything and it seems like i can actually touch things on the phone and I will hear feedback from it but just no image will display at all. It is a blank screen as if the phone is turned off. Any ideas on how to fix this? or would I need to try to fix the screen all together?

Sounds like what happened on my S4... when taken to AT&T they said it was a pressure crack. That's not the glass, that's the screen itsel lf possibly due to excessive heat OR if something heavy was left on it (or not that heavy, just on top of the phone for quite a while). Either way, you would need the screen replaced or you can take it to AT&T and see what you can do This is only from my own experience and knowledge, however my S4 broke due to presumed heat (don't know how) and nothing on it, though AT&T refuses to rule that possibility out. Sorry if I couldn't help too much

You helped do not worry! So I called samsung and when I explained how exactly the crack appeared, he told me that I could send it in and they can see what they can do (I was kinda nervous because I was rooted but I was able to odin it back to stock thank god its not hard at all to do even without what is viewable on the screen lol) The rep told me something along the lines of it could be either dead pixles is what I am seeing and not a crack. I kinda doubt thats why its like that but idk. He said that when samsung gets it they will do a hardware check and if they can determine if the crack was not made due to me dropping it then they will fix it. As for how true this is I have no idea! I never in my life had to use a warranty before so im scared to find out what they say!

If you see the crack under the screen when it's off then I'm pretty sure that's not dead pixels, I would show you my S4 but my dad has it in custody to get it fixed and sell it sometime in the future... basically, everytime I rebooted the phone, more cracks came, and then they grew. I'm glad I could help though and I hope that the warranty covers it even with Odin flash, however root is within the system I believe so even a clean Odin flash may remove root but not all traces Hopefully they won't bother checking the entire system for traces, but if they do... thennnn you're kinda screwed sadly. Considering you're sending this to the actual manufacturer (Samsung) instead of the carrier (AT&T) then it is very likely that they will find out about the root. Whether they really care? (Which they probably do, screw your enterprising ways Samsung) That's up to them now. I wish you the best of luck!!!! Tell me how it goes
