So I'm a Galaxy Nexus (Verizon) user and looking to get a new phone. I'm looking at getting a Moto X and I have a few questions about it. Mainly in regards to rooting and getting cyanogenmod up and running on it. I don't mind using its stock rom as it seems rather close to stock android, but I'm curious as to how hard is it to root a Moto X on Verizon and getting cyanogenmod on it and keep the special features like the shake to unlock the camera and the voice commands. Also how is the battery on the device (I normally stick to 3G and maybe web surf a bit and look at my RSS feeds through the day not a lot of really data intense apps.) Thanks.
I just got my Moto X a few days ago and found that I enjoyed the experience so much on it that I decided not to root. I have been rooting my phones for a few years and finally found a stock experience that I enjoy.
I don't see a reason why you would want to lose the amazing features that Moto X offers by switching to CM.
You can root the phone (there are guides around the forums for this) and add Xposed modules to modify some parts of the phone, however, any OTA updates will cause some headaches. With 4.4 around the corner for the Moto X I am going to hold off rooting for a while and enjoy what Motorola gave to us.

I'm also a long time rooter/CM kinda guy, galaxy nexus, GS3 etc etc, and I can honestly say that the only reason I would root this thing would be to change the battery icon (aaagh I hate it so much)
But this phone is so so good out of the box, it's just not worth wasting effort trying...although it would be nice to drop a new kernel on it.
Best phone I've had so far.

I will eventually root this thing... someday. I would also like a new kernel and I want to have Greenify back and some small customization options, but for now I am going to enjoy not troubleshooting some sort of issue that comes as a side effect of rooting.
I I just switched to the Moto X from the gnex on Sprint. I am very happy with my decision. The battery life is an enormous improvement over the gnex. I have always rooted my devices and installed custom roms, but I am yet to do so on the Moto X. It has a great stock set up. I will likely root once 4.4 is avaliable, but only to get rid of the sprint crap.

That's great to hear about the battery and stock ROM. Has anyone used the Motomaker site yet (Mainly this goes out to AT&T owners). I'd like to get mine through that when it opens up for most carriers on the 11th. But I'm curious exactly how does the process goes with activation and such. And I just noticed Verizon only offers the 16gig model is there anyway to get a 32gig model with big red.

Moto Maker allows an option for 32gb, so you could wait for that on Verizon, or the Developer Edition is 32gb but you have to pay $549 for it.

We're hoping when Verizon gets Moto maker access 32gb will be an option. Right now you can get a 32gb developer version but you'll have to pay full price, ($550) and is only available in a weird white /black combo.

Moto maker is a breeze... You do everything through the website, new line, upgrade or off contact. Much easier than I had anticipated.

Came from a galaxy "nexus" to the X and love it. I finally did root it and have played with Xposed a bit, and I will probably never flash a rom again. Xposed let's me change all of the things that I cared about on AOKP like having a torch toggle in QS, and statusbar/navbar transparency. To be honest, if I didn't want to enable native tether privileges (still unlimited here), I wouldn't be rooted.

I am a prior nexus owner and I spent month with the HTC one and then took it back because it was garbage. I have had my x for only a couple of days and I mist say I am EXTREMELY impressed. If you loved your gnex you will love this phone!

I LOVE HTC but I had the one for five weeks and at least 1 out of 4 calls were dropped randomly or my cheek would hang up the call. I loved the look of the one and thought sense 5 was the best sense yet. However due to the dropped calls the phone just did not work for me.
I have talked to others that returned the phone for the same reason
I wouldn't use the HTC one either. The sense UI is rather sluggish (I've used in the past before - HTC incredible and I've used the demo of the HTC one they had the verizon store and it was the same slowness), Not at all a fan of beats by dre/monster cables. And the button layout is kinda eh. Used to having 4 icons at the bottom with the main menu button being near the center.

Question for the group... Will rooting alone allow you to install CM? Is CM available to be flashed via safestrap?
I ask because -> http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/1...cyanogenmod-10-2-experimental-nightly-builds/ and -> http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Xt1060_Info seem to indicate its for Unlocked bootloader or Developer Edition. And since there is no way yet to unlock the non-Dev Edition's boot loader, it further appears its really for Dev Ed only. And all the roms that aren't a leak from Moto in the Developer sections here also state you need a Developer Edition X or Unlocked boot loader.
Vergil117, as far as rooting, JCASE has released ways to root the initial shipping rom version, and the OTA update for the camera fix. So that is easy enough. I have rooted mine, just to tether (I still have unlimited). As with other devices, if you don't have an unlocked boot loader, rooting after new ROM updates are pushed is uncertain.
Like most have posted, I think the X in its stock form is very nice, and I don't find a need to flash a alternate ROM. If you flash to CM, you'll loose the Moto customization like touch-less control, shake for camera, etc.
So I ordered a moto X through the Motomaker software on monday night. It still says est delivery by the 15 but it also says it hasn't shipped. Kinda worried.

Same, I got to step 2 on Tuesday morning and that's been it so far. I'm hopeful we'll get our shipping notifications soon so we can get our phones before the weekend. But I know Moto probably got slammed with a bunch of orders on Monday so some of us may have to wait till next week...
Update to the shipping post. I got the fedex info and it should be here Friday yay.
Motorola's update system is way behind. When I ordered mine, over a month ago, It didn't say shipped until the morning it arrived and I didn't get a tracking number until an hour or so after I had already received the device.
But it arrived the day they said it would... I'd rather the info be late instead of the phone
Moto X rocking 4.4
Oh I know the feeling, Fedex was being lazy yesterday with my order. I live in a gated apartment building, the main lobby is like right next to the door to the building. I honestly think they saw the door and said oh no one here and went away. So I had to call them and tell them to drop it off at a fedex store.
My Verizon LG G2 was rooted and was trying to install CWM. Was booting into recovery through CWM App and now phone will not turn on at all. Just vibrates when I hit the power button. Any help please?
The Loki patch is not a bootloader unlock you cannot install cwm through ROM manager you have to use an app called freegee once the screen is not turning on I don't think its fixable I may be wrong but it sounds like its really bricked

I used Freegee to install. Was trying to boot into recovery using CWM.
Same problem
there has to be some sort of a fix... I downloaded freegee, then installed TWRP, rebooted it, and now it wont turn on, is NOT recognized by my computer, and wont even load the logo after i hold the power + Vol. Down. if I hold them for a while, red LED will show until I let go of them.
Same thing happened to me today. Cant get it to come on at all.

Yah, this sucks. Just curious if the manual way is working fine with the ota 12b?
I wouldn't try it its not freegee the app I wonder if Verizon/lg patched the bootloader to deny our current Recovery's this seems to be happening to people who just bought there g2s they must have just patched the bootloader but no ota update this has Verizon's name written all over it

I bought a used one and used the app and my phone is bricked. I'm talking about manually using adb. That method works still?
It is not the app it is the recovery shellnut thinks verizin /lg did something we are all very confused if I were you just to be safe I wouldn't try it

Is there any news on this? I have tried everything to get the g2 to fire back up but no luck. When charging the led blinks red. When attempting to turn it on the phone vibrates every 2 seconds. I think I am just going to get a replacement. Anyone have any advice?
On a separate note, I have no idea why this happened. I clean wiped, installed a rom, rebooted all from recovery and the phone never booted into anything. I wasn't even a slight bit worried because I know I did this correctly.
I appreciate it, thanks.

Just get a replacement. tell them that it wont turn on. DO NOT tell them that you rooted it. hahaha
Just had this happen to me.
It's probably dead.
Plug it in and give it some time to charge.
I finally got into recovery mode and was able to restore a ROM (bad flash and was stuck at the LG logo)
Freegee has been bricking devices since its conception. I'm surprised people are still trying to use it.
If anyone reads this before trying to use it, I would suggest not to.
I've used flashify once and it worked fine, but it's really best to push it via adb. Don't know how? Google is your friend. Or the search function on these forums. There's full guides on how to push a recovery on the g2.
Taking the easy way is normally never the best way.

So does this mean the phone is fried? I received mine like this and have no idea what to do. I am not a Verizon customer so I have no way to return the phone. I took it in a trade for my phone thinking it must be fixable and now I am without a device. I know it is my own fault for not doing my research first but this really just sucks :/

Can you plug the phone into the computer and enter download mode? If not and you can't get get into recovery, then it is bricked.
You could always try to use lg's one year warrenty. It will cost you thought.

No download mode, no recovery. The stupid LED wouldn't even light up. Luckily, I was fortunate enough to get my old phone back. A guy found me on craigslist and texted me asking me to unlock his model LS980 for T-Mobile, and in turn he would trade me the VS980 for a Droid Ultra. And like I said, I obliged and thought I could fix it, without doing my research first. Well like I said, I was fortunate enough that he traded me back today. Now I have another swap set up with a guy tomorrow, to trade my Ultra for his LS980. But this one has issues too. For some reason it has no sound at all, unless you use a Bluetooth. I'm sure that will be annoying really really fast, so anyone have any ideas where I can find the info to fix this? Lol

I am pretty sure that LG has a 1 year warranty and they would've replaced it for you for free. I went to Verizon and they sent me a new one right away but a while back I had upgraded my old droid 1 before the 1 year period ended and I bricked it just messing around. Motorola replaced it with a refurb and I never even went to Verizon. I just had to pay shipping. Maybe you should try the same thing. Just send a couple emails back and forth with LG customer support and see what happens. Good luck.
Add me to the brick list

Mine did the same thing this morning, although it has been fine for 2 months since root+xposed+freegee (for TWRP).
But if I send it back for warranty replacement, will they be able to see it has been rooted if it won't turn on? I love the phone, but really don't want to be billed full price for a new one.
Two days ago I switched back to my Verizon Moto X from my nexus 5 after figuring out that Sprint and T-Mobile are unbearable in my area. I'm rooted on 4.4 and am getting the update push. So I was thinking is it even worth unlocking the boot loader if I am perfectly happy with stock Moto ROM and kernel and just use safestrap so I don't lose system write?
Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
I guess what I was getting at is the $40 worth it if I don't care about Cyanogenmod etc.
Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
If you want to be able to root no matter what, yes. If not no.
Moto X developer edition
I already rooted and got write protection nuked I'm just sitting on 4.4 planning my next move. Right now I'm using gravity box but if I'm going to use safestrap I might as well flash Eclipse it looks perfect.I can avoid xposed as well.
Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
honestly I had the same question a few days ago and I went ahead and simply had my bootloader unlocked by that Chinese guy.
I'd rather have the peace of mind knowing anything is absolutely stable system wise when switching to 4.4.2 instead of "maybe" everything working alright.
This way too, if going forward android is updated again, it will be easy to side-load or even take an OTA; versus safestrap and/or 4.2.2 root method may not work at all or cause more issues in the future.
I guess what i'm getting at is, the unlocked bootloader will guarantee the longevity of my moto X
my 2 cents :good:
You may be stuck on 4.4 forever if you want proper root.
And when official updates end for the X, roms will keep it updated....losing Moto features maybe, but without root....you'll still be stuck.
Doesn't seem like a lot of money to avoid all that.

I'd think if it worked we would have heard about it by now. The Moto X is not on the list of supported devices. Though reading up on it, the website says if it doesn't work on your device it won't cause any issues, just reboot and carry on. You could take one for the team and give it a shot...
Yeah, not working. Worth a try though.
Does this over and over again and then fails....
Maybe it could work on KitKat?
damn this is the longest i've had a phone without root! prolly gonna have to sell this thing and get the m9 when it comes out! bad enough no bootloader unlock, but damn even no root thats gay
as of yesterday, my Moto G 2014 (bought thru Amazon last Nov.) doesn't boot anymore, not even to recovery.
It was never rooted.
Any advice before contact Motorola support? I don't want to loose any personal data.
Do you get any indication that it's charging when plugged in?
A screen should appear, the Motorola logo first, and then a graphic noting that the phone is being charged, and then the screen turns itself off. Please check if that happens.

That's probably best. If it mysteriously came on, you'd still have to worry about it dying after the warranty period. Which it would almost surely do the day after the warranty expired.
