Unlock Bootloader - Moto X Q&A

Hello,
I'm Trying to unlock a moto x 1058 from AT&T, I've entered the following command in fastboot mode: oem get_unlock_data.
Then I've pasted that code in the moto x website, but I got a message saying that my bootloader can't be unlocked.
Is there anything I can do to unlock it?
Thanks in advance.

Both AT&T and Verizon will not allow the bootloader to be unlocked, except on the developer edition. Many moons ago, there was a Chinese middleman that could supply unlock codes for a fee, but that has been a while. Most likely, you're stuck ... sorry.

What about sunshine? If you are on 4.4.2 it should work. That's what i've read about.

Motorola won't unlock my relocked bootloader :(

So I bought a Moto X through swappa in December. Up until now, I've been pretty happy with it stock, but now I'm looking to try some different ROMs. The problem is, the original owner previously unlocked and relocked the bootloader. Now when I try to unlock it, I'm being told I'm not eligible, because my account does not match the account my phone was originally activated on. Huh??? Does anyone have any idea what I can do at this point? Surely others have unlocked previously owned X's, right?
Email the original owner and ask for the unlock key.
Go into fastboot
fastboot OEM unlock
since the code has previously been put in, there should be no need for a code again

I guess I'll try doing that through swappa.

Tried that. Still locked though.
Email MotoX support. They are friendly and helpful usually. Some Chinese guy has unlock codes, that might help too

I have not heard of that.
Besides the physical appearance, when it comes to the difference between the "Developer Edition" and Retail or Moto Maker edition, the only difference is unlocking the bootloader on the Dev Edition doesn't void the warranty, but on the "non-Dev" it does void the warranty.
For the most part, Motorola gives the bootloader unlock code away for free on their web site, along with the instructions to unlock. The exception being in the case of a few carriers like ATT, Verizon and Republic Wireless, where for what appears to be carrier requirements, they do NOT give out the code.
If you have ATT, VZW or Republic Wireless, and have an X built in 2014, see the China Middle Man is back thread in the general section about getting a bootloader unlock code from the only way possible at this time. But yes, it does void the warranty

thank you for your response I do know that the unlocking the bootloader voids the warranty but again I ask is there any way to JTAG in order to unlock for att or verizonhas anyone looked into that and how reliable are the Chinese middleman for unlocking the bootloader

I have seen NOTHING on using JTAG to unlock the bootloader on the Moto X.
Since its release, the only way to UNLOCK the Bootloader on the X has been to get the unlock code.
How reliable is the middle man? Just read that thread. If the build date on your phone is 2014, you will likely be able to get a code. The middle man doesn't have "real time access" to the database containing the unlock codes, so if your phone was built a week ago, you might have to wait. As long as you meet those conditions, you'll likely get your code. In cases where the middle man didn't have the code, he's refunded the money.

Moto X Unlock from 4.4.4 (Safe Site?)

Soooo.. will this site work to unlock my ATT moto x on 4.4.4?
http://www.attphoneunlockingshop.us/products/USA-AT&T-Motorola-Moto-X-IMEI-Unlock-Code.html
That's not a bootloader unlock. That's for a carrier unlock so that you could take the phone with you to another carrier. Bootloader unlock requires either an unlock code from htcdev/middleman or an exploit like sunshine. For now you'll just have to wait to unlock your bootloader until sunshine gets updated and hopefully covers the X on 4.4.4.
Uggh.. Thanks. I misread the page in desperation to unlock this damn phone. Hope the update to 5.0 presents an exploit.

[Q] I'm lost! the xt 1058 and bootloader

I was just about to buy a xt 1058 sim unlocked, just now i find out people are saying that with the 1058 you cant unlock the bootloader, for the at&t variant?... but the phone is unlocked free for any carrier, so the bootloder cant be unlocked in this phone? please help i need to know this
Sorry my bad english
Correct, the only way at present to unlock the bootloader on the xt1058 is to pay for the Sunshine app, http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/request-help-exploit-moto-x-bl-t2828471 but only if your phone's version is prior to 4.4.4, though it appears it's "possible" it can work with 4.4.4

Its a Sim unlocked phone (no carrier) but the number is still 1058, im in Latin America, the phone has no logos in the back, i think only the verizion and at&t versions can't be unlocked... but i dont know, so ALL 1058 have the bootloader locked?
I guess if your carrier can provide the unlock code, but I believe not from Motorola
Just check which model you have.
If its an XT1058, its the AT&T model. You can request a sim unlock code from AT&T free of charge directly here: https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/?#/
Otherwise, buy it from ebay for around 10$
Now if you want to unlock the bootloader to flash different firmwares, AT&T phones (XT1058) don't allow that by getting the code from Motorola directly, so you need to use a tool: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/request-help-exploit-moto-x-bl-t2828471
It costs 25$ and it only works on phones that have an android OS lower than 4.4.4 installed!
To expand on what @dagoban said...
SIM Lock/Unlock (aka Carrier unlock) is different from Bootloader Lock/Unlock.
SIM Unlock is usually possible by buying the code from many 3rd party web sites on the internet. And sometimes your carrier will supply the code (you may have to meet carrier requirements) for free or a small fee.
When it comes to Bootloader unlocking, that is only needed if you want to easily root, or the ability to flash a custom recovery (Like TWRP, CWM, Philz) or 3rd party ROM (like CM).
For the Developer Editions Moto X, and some carrier editions (Like T-Mobile, Sprint, Rogers Canada, and others), Motorola freely gives away the BootLoader Unlock codes when requested On Motorola's Web Site. In the case of the Non-Developer Editions, it voids their warranty to request the code.
I'm not going to go into the reasons why, but Moto does NOT give out the bootloader unlock code for the Retail and Moto Maker X for Verizon, ATT, Republic Wireless and a few other carriers. For these you need to rely on someone finding a HACK( Sunshine was mentioned) but this can often times have requirements/restrictions. At one time, someone got a hold of Moto's Bootloader Unlock code database, and was selling codes to Verizon, ATT, etc users who couldn't otherwise unlock their bootloader, but this has since stopped.

[Q] xt1072 bootloader unlock

i have the uk xt1072 4g is it possible to unlock bootloader as when i try it says device not qualified for bl unlock, and when i spoke to motorola they looked at the unlock data and said the moto g 2nd gen 4g is not supported yet for bootloader unlock?
any help is appreciated as phone feels useless with locked bootloader i just want to achieve root access
My device cid is 0x007 which i should be able to unlock
Here are a lot of XT1072 users with a rooted phone. As this is only possible with an unlocked bl the statement of motorola canĀ“t be true.
If your cid says "able to unlock" it should be able to unlock. Is it a retail phone? Have you deleted all the seperators in the key before pasting it to the motorola page?
Maybe look for a XT1072 user here on XDA and ask if he has any problems.
Yh should be straight forward so annoying pretty sure im entering key correctly not sure what issue is

According to motorola the xt1072 moto g 2014 4g 2nd gen which is not supported at moment

It is unlockable, try to copy every line manually and make sure u don't have spaces somewhere.
I have a similar issue with the xt1072 (0x007). Motorola says it is unlockable and I got some unlock key but if I want to unlock the phone with fastboot oem unlock KEY it is not possible to unlock. There is a message: unlock not possible enable oem unlock in the developer menu. But there is no option in my developer menu for enabling oem unlock.
Is it possible to get the developer menu option back or to enable oem unlock on a other way?

I resolved my issue with first doing a factory reset, see www_androidpit_com / how-to-factory-reset-the-moto-g-2014 and after that I have this options and unlocking the bootloader works like a charme.
