Warning galaxy s5 and s5 actives have a defect I'm the touch screen, caused by heat the phone produces however samsung denies it. What happens is that the screen gets hot from the battery and then it cracks then samsung support either says that Is an unknown issue or you can warranty the phone which you'll pay shipping to Texas both ways and then they will email you telling you that the phone has physical damage and physical/liquid damage voids there warranty where you will be forced to pay 100 and some odd dollars so they can repair it. This happened to me and since I have found 2 people I know that this has happened to, all only owning the phone for less than 1 week. Plus if you Google it you can find at least 6 other instances of this same incident. Oh and att says it was probably drooped and tells you to **** off, then they say that this is common that they get hot and Crack, aknowledgeing that it happens and that it was heat because the Crack is on the inside and not the outside. Then they say they don't warranty phones that were dropped and they just told me it was heat.
Moral of the story avoid the s5 and s5 active as well as ATT

6 or 7 out of 10 or 20 million... Yep, a good reason for avoiding the the whole thing. :silly: Sorry for your trouble, but the heat really has to be extreme to crack the digitizer. AT&T didn't make the phone, and didn't hold a gun to your head and force you to buy it. But Samsung could have treated you better.
It's not just that but att has a 28 day phone replacement or return with a 35$ restocking fee that they wouldn't honor because it was physical damage even though they told me it was from the phone.

That is they know that Samsung is too cheap to refund them the money. It's all about the "bottom line" they have to protect it. But I guess I will see for myself when my S5 comes tomorrow. I am not a big fan of Samsung after getting 5 bad S3's when I was with US Cellular. But 95% (Made up figure) of what I heard of the S5 is positive. So I bought a used one for $350 (Sold my HTC One M8 for $341, so I had the money to try it out) I still have a M8 I am using, some how when trading phones, I wound up with 2 of the M8.
I love my broken s5 it's a great phone but there is a lot of cases of this defect I have found a lot and to personally know 2 other people with the same issues with in the first week of owning the phone makes you wonder how many of them are not posted online

Or how many think that they caused it. Samsung isn't on my good side, I had 5 bad S3's when I was US Cellular. My Note 3 was good, just didn't like the size.
Doesn't sound common enough to worry, besides if they try that **** on me then I'll sure as **** raise hell, and besides that's pretty illegal for them to let a defect like that go unnoticed, and then deny to repair a crack caused by there ignorance, so weirdly I don't think this has much truth to it but, idk maybe it does, but that's my opinion.:cyclops:
not sure if it's too early to ask this yet, but is there already a root method that doesn't trip knox or whatever thing that can void the warranty?

Short answer, no.
We all know t mobile don't check for root so why bother yourself with this
g3 soon to be NOTE 4
its all these IBone converts that are flocking to this phone..
They're so used to Apple telling them what they can and can not do, that they dont yet know how to handle the freedom of Android/T-Mobile..
i'm just going to assume you're directing that at someone else. i've been using using android for quite some time. there was no knox when i rooted my phone before.
i don't buy insurance from tmobile so they won't be the one that's handling my warranty issues if something happens.
Like the OP, I refuse to waste money on Carrier insurance, and my previous phones did not have Knox. So it remains an important issue if you are relying on Samsung warranty. It's clear that existing root will trip Knox. My question is - what is the chance that there will be a root that does not trip knox in the future. Is it worth waiting or is knox considered to be bulletproof?
Edit: and no, I never owned an iPhone, and all my Androids have been rooted so far.
From what I read nobody has been able to break the Knox that Samsung share this knowledge with Google.
If the phone died and no fault of your own, Samsung will not take it back even if Knox is tripped?
Im not expert but I think that Samsung has to have a way to remove " tripped Knox flag " or any phone with hardware failure and Knox flag tripped would have no resale value if, for example, usb port is replaced.

it IS too early to ask; the phone has been out for a few days, so if you're paranoid about rooting because of tripping Knox, you'll have to just wait around and see, or develop an exploit and share it with the rest of the folks who feel they need it..
I've given back a Note 2 and a Note 3, KNOX wasn't out for Note 2 but it was rooted. Note 3 had a counter of like 12, as stated above, T-Mobile doesn't check.

This couldn't be any more true. I've rooted every phone I've had with them that could be rooted and never once had them turn me down for an exchange or replacement unit. Hell I think I replaced my old one s maybe seven or eight times over the years I had it and I even stopped flashing it back to stock and just sent it back. Not like it's super hard for them to clean it all back up to stock.
I'm certain that when you return a phone to most vendors, they just throw it into the "defect" pile, and those phones either gets wiped and re-imaged, or they send them to some 3rd party who buys them cheap and does that on their own.
after spending many years as a director of sales for a consumer electronics company, I know how expensive it is to try and inspect/repair returns, so I cant imagine that Samsung/t mobile/att and who ever else even bothers to look at them.
If you think about the thousands of phones coming back as returns every day, handling them any more than absolutely necessary is a major losing proposition for these companies, and they only care about profit. When you return your rooted/knoxed/bricked phone, they NEVER repair it, you just get a new or rebuilt one sent out to you.
But hey, if you want to worry about tripping Knox or sending in a rooted phone, and that you will be in trouble/charged/punished for that, then you just go ahead and keep thinking that!:cyclops::cyclops:

I currently have the LG G3 and after seeing the note 4 in person I want one . I guess my main question is should I hold off or do you guys think that its worth it to move on from the G3. I was a note 3 user and loved the phone, but Samsung really pissed me off with the whole Knox garbage that they implemented. In advance I am sorry if this thread is out of place, I just wanted some feedback from current owners.
huh? why do you even care about knox?
Came from a g3 and the note is better

Well in the event that I need my phone serviced, my concern is that I will be denied warranty by either T-mobile or Samsung. I honesty considered this a shifty move to use this as a reason to deny warranty claims....I might be wrong because I never have had to send my note 3 in for warranty purposes anyway. I miss how easy it was to connect to my samsung smart tv with the note 3, with the lg g3 it never streams well.
I also came from a G3. Had 2 of them, gave my wife one and sold mine on Craigslist and used the money to get the Note 4 which I'm using now. The Note 4 is a better device. The Snapdragon 805 handles the 2K display better and the battery is also better. Phone also doesn't heat up as much as the G3. The display being LED is also better then the LCD in my opinion with colors popping or u can dim the colors down in display settings.
If your able to obtain a Note 4 I say go for it. The Note 4 is a better device and will have more Development behind it vs the G3.
If you can't upgrade your not missing much.
In my opinion the Note 4 / Nexus 6 / G3 are the best devices currently on the market. Note 4 having an edge with the LED display and Stylus.

I am on the old jump plan and I have one upgrade left for the year so I am able to upgrade. You mentioned the note 4 doesn't heat up as much as the G3, that was one of my concerns and thanks for clearing that up. Using the phone for the torque app or navigation really fires up the g3, almost too hot. How loaded with bloat is touchwiz this time around?
I have the Note 4 and it is a great phone. It has replaced my OnePlus One as my main phone. The Note 4 is definitely better than the One, but only marginally. It isn't 450.00 better. Not for my usage at least.
its crazy bright! i dimmed it to like 5% and its still pretty bright lol
The charge is quite fast compared to the N3
Ive played around with the G3 and i6+, Note4 has better build quality imo although it doesnt look that way in videos. you have to hold it to believe it.
Metal bezel makes it a little slippery but the leather back, which feels a lot better than N3, helps offset it.
N4 wouldve been the perfect phone if the "Samsung" logo in the front is removed, quite distracting
I just upgraded from Galaxy S4 and I love it! I rooted day 1 and have no regrets.

T-mobile uses experian for warranties and jump related trades, didn't they recently implement a policy to no longer accept any device with a tampered flag, rooted, etc for warranty and or jump purposes. This implementation also includes devices with tripped knox flags. I'm not trying to be a bummer or anything I just try to think ahead.

TMOBILE uses asurion for warranty claims and both have no care about Knox or root. They both send out replacement as they are. They flash fresh software and ship it. It does not matter for anyone but Samsung.

so samsung does care if knox got tripped? just wanna make sure since i don't use tmobile warranty. so if anything were to happen, i'll have to ship it back to samsung for repairs.
i'm not worry bout bricking my phone with root. just don't wanna be burn by hardware issues unrelated to root 1 month later if samsung rejects warranty.

Samsung would care. But why use them when t mobile takes care of you. Plus sending phone back to Samsung is like a 2 week progress .

| came from the G3 as well. while the G3 was a nice phone I think the note 4 beats it. The Screen is better, battery life trumps the G3, and personally I like how the note 4 feels in the hand. One thing l do like more on the G3 is how they were able to fit the screen in such a small body.

Technically Tmobile can cover warranty for Samsung devices instead of you having to send it to Samsung. I forget what it's called but as long as your device is within the manufacturers 1 year warranty, tmobile can advance replace you one for $20. The defective device goes back to Tmobile. If you don't return the defective phone they charge you I think $200. I did this with my note 3 a few months ago when the screen on/off sensor broke.

I never bought any warranty/insurance from tmobile. I thought the basic 1 year warranty was that I can return to tmobile within 30 days and the rest of the year will be covered by samsung.
I will definitely be rooting ASAP if tmobile covers the entire year without me buying insurance from them.

cool, thanks. never knew this. i will definitely be rooting this tomorrow.
So I went out and exchanged my iPhone 6+ for a Galaxy S6 with T-Mobile, and I rooted it using the PingPong Root as to not trip KNOX. So tonight I wanted to flash TWRP and though the hell with KNOX, I do what I want. So I used flashify and installed TWRP through the app and everything went smoothly, and even flashed a custom kernel. Then I thought, heh wonder if KNOX tripped, went in to download mode and to my surprise, my KNOX was tripped but not with 0x0001 but with 0x0208! I googled it and never saw anyone else post anything about it, so I thought I would post and ask, did I screw something up?
EDIT: will add pictures in the morning when I can grab my girlfriends phone

You were ok until you flashed TWRP and custom kernel, which tripped Knox. No real harm done, but you can't take it back to T-Mobile and ask for another one. They will laugh you out the door
So now that you are full fledged modder, you might as well flash a debloated rom and have fun with it. Who knows . . . maybe @mikeyinid will bring Xposed to us, if some folks aren't blowing smoke up our asses.
If I understand it correctly knox warranty doubles as a flash counter. So if you flash a kernel it should be 0x0001 then if you flash 207 more times it would be 0x0208. I'm assuming knox glitched out on a flash or for what ever reason something insecure was flashed 208 times. Perhaps it's a malicious app with root access doing stuff knox dislikes?
T-Mobile does not care if you return the phone with a tripped Knox flag and here's why: even if you return or exchange an untouched phone in immaculate condition that phone is not put back for sale. It's sent back to the manufacturer where it gets reflashed and brought back to factory like state.
As a precaution, I always return phones on the activation screen. Why: so the rep doesn't have to factory reset so there's no need for him to see the boot up screen or recovery.
That being said I wouldn't push my luck and return a Samsung phone running CM.

I realize T-Mobile returns phones to OEMs before reselling them as refurbished. But T-Mobile does not have to warranty a phone that has been modified from original state (eg, rooted, Knox tripped, etc). Whether or not they will exchange a modded device depends on the rep you talk to. The other day, I called a local T-Mobile store and asked the MOD whether they would exchange a phone that is rooted or Knox tripped, and he made it very clear they would not. So you are taking your chances returning such a device. It is always best to restore a device to stock before returning it.

This is why you don't ask them personally. If you call customer service over the phone, it's completely different. They'll do basically anything to keep the customer.

If I wanted to return a modded phone, I certainly would not call ahead to see if they'd take it. I have no intention of returning mine. The only reason I called was because it came up in another thread, and I had nothing better to do at the time besides make a call to the nearest T-Mobile. My point is, you never really know if a store will take it back. People should not make blanket statements assuring others they can return modded phones, because it depends on the rep you deal with. If the rep is in a good mood and feeling generous, your chances are pretty good. But if the rep wants to be a douchbag, they have a right to refuse a modded phone. I agree most reps will do anything to keep a customer, but you are still rolling the dice when you try to return a modded phone.

Hi,
I bought my note 8 directly from Sammy and was wondering if rooting will effect my plan.
My plan is a little over 30 pounds a month and after two years the phone becomes mine but after one year I can return this phone and get a note 9 but I am not sure if I still can swap this note 8 for a note 9 after I break Knox and root it.
Does anyone know if I can root and not get in trouble when swapping phones ?

Ease of someone knows how this works then please let us know.
If you have to specifically pay through samsung pay then you cant root as samsung pay will no longer work
I am not talking about Samsung pay the app.
I am talking about the phone.
Bump! Rooting phone will not affect upgrade plan... Just un-root it before change it with ur service provider... or re-install stock rom before swap. Selling phone on the other hand wouldn't be fair to those who using Samsung Pay or other NFC payed options... But that is not the issue for ur quest..., just saying...
Jess no one understands what I am trying to say ?
I bought the phone from Samsung and have to pay them around 30 pounds a month.
This phone did not come from a service provider...
Just flashing stock ain't gonna fool Samsung when the phone is returned as there is something called Knox.
But forget my question as I already rooted and flashed custom Rom.

I didn't see anything in the ToS about rooting, mostly about damage, maybe it does come under damage though as Knox is an e-Fuse that's destroyed upon flashing custom recovery..
However I don't think they care that much as it's a simple fix for them. I guess no one knows for sure though unless they've done it themselves. maybe ask on the S8 forum incase someone who had the S8 on the upgrade program rooted & then upgraded to Note 8. (if you still would like to know)
My verdict is I don't think it matters... However I've not flashed mine
