Hi everyone, first time poster, though I have used the forums for a while. Apologies if this isn't the place for this question, but I couldn't find a better spot. I rooted my first-generation Fire (remember those?) a while ago and installed CM10 to get a more up-to-date version of Android than what came with the Fire, but the hardware is a little too old to run it well (just starting the Kindle book app can take close to a minute). I want to get the newest Fire 7 and put CM on it, and I was wondering how it compares with other "budget" tablets currently available, such as the Nexus 7, Zenpad S 8.0, or Galaxy Tab. Does it run comparably well, or is it really "bogged down"?
I didn't have much time with it hands-on, but I rooted and installed custom ROMs on a couple of them and they worked fairly well, no annoying stutters or lag. I gave one to my brother and he says it's working really well, himself having previously owned a 1st-gen Fire. If you still would like to squeeze something out of that one, I'd recommend going with Hashcode's AOSP 4.3 ROM, it always seemed much smoother to me than CM ROMs for that device.

It does the job, it's been quite fun to mess around with if they were the same price I'd go with the Nexus 7 despite the lack of sd but given it was less than a third of the price I could get an N7 for it's a bargain.
Galaxy tabs do feel bogged down to me, feel sluggish whenever I use my parents but suspect screen is noticeably better on those and the zenpad which I've never seen anywhere.
Thanks so much for the advice, both of you. I got a new Fire, put CM 12.1 on it (thanks to these forums, I knew to check the version before letting it on the wifi, and was able to prevent it from updating to 5.1.1) , and it is running great. I think I already tried Hashcode's AOSP 4.3, Duchman, and wasn't able to use it well (same issue - incredible slowness), but I might take another crack at it now that I have the new Fire.

Just curious how many people here are new to Android?
I've noticed that there are Nook users who seem to be new to the forum. So, I am assuming that those new to NOOK are getting their first taste at Android or just never tinkered with your Android phones.
Myself, I've been with Android since the G1 and was using an Iphone 3gs prior to making the switch. Currently I have a HD2/Android, my wife has a Vibrant/ Eugene's Gingerbread and my daughter has a G1/Sparks Mod.
What about U?
I switched from iPhone to an Evo last summer, and sold my iPad around the same time (Apple's handling of the iPhone 4 antenna-gate turned me off to their company). I haven't looked back - Android is much more for me than Apple was, and the NookColor is a phenomenal tablet for me.
I never had apple products but got to play with them as I knew many people who did have it. They make a great product.
I am coming from an HTC Incredible, which is awesome. Personality wise. Android is right for me just as a PC is right for me over a MAC. for the price, this Nook Color experience can't be beat and the rooting and customizing is an awesome hobby!
NC is my first Android device. I did a fair amount of hacking with my DirecTivo which is also a Linux based hardware device.
Homer
Original Droid which I have had for a year... though it seems like longer (which made for some fun at my expense in another thread, lol.)
Android-x86 in some virtual machines and tested on a netbook and on a dual-core Atom system.
Now my phone is upgraded to a Droid 2 Global as well...
Still have the original Droid though, and loather to part with it.
iPhone owner here (jailbroken, of course).
After initial awe wore off, I didn't like my iPhone much anymore for its limitations, but after jailbreaking it and customizing it to my liking, I like it again. Always looked at Android devices with envy though. NC is my first, and I loved learning about ADB, rooting. I love Market and that I can sideload off-Market apps by just dropping them in Dropbox.
This is my first android as well. I've had the last three iPhones and loved them. But I consider them a communication device. The tablet arena had to be android for me so that I can integrate it into my job as an engineer. So far its been great! !!!!!!
get zooted with nook color
I'm new to android. Using a 3GS for my phone.
I am not new to Android. I have had the HTC Eris, LG Ally and currently I have the Moto Droid, which I love. So I am not new to Android and I have the original Nook which is rooted as well.
I am an NC owner because i was an android owner. Before this this, i had my droid incredible, and i loved the experience. Reading about what could be done with the NC, it was an easy choice to ask for it as a gift. I love this thing, and am more pleased with it than i thought i would be actually.
Learned how to root my HD2 a few months ago, and LOVE android! Coming from a blackberry, WM was driving me crazy. Blech!
I'd been drooling over my daughter's ipad, but when I learned about the NC, and the PRICE, well, gave myself a fun Christmas present. So much better than the ipad!
I've been an android user for about 10 months now. I also have a HTC Google Nexus One that is running CyanogenMod 6.1.1.
New to Android but did a lot of tinkering with my Tilt(Kaiser) and Touch Pro2 before I got my iPhone.
This is my first Android Device. Using it, I've actually decided that aside from the apps, Android was made for this screen size.
webOS is my OS of choice though.
I've had a slew of different Android phones from the G1 to the myTouch 3G. I currently have an HD2 that I've messed around with Android on. But my main phone ( and the phone that I always come back to ) is my iPhone 4...
I owned an iPad but sold it due to never using it, but when I saw the Nook color could be basically a fully functional Android tablet for $250 and it was much easier to hold than the iPad I had to buy one...
So far I'm very happy. I can't wait for full custom ROM's to become the norm...
I've had a Hero for quite some time, which I rooted and have flashed many roms to. I've been very happy with it, and was equally happy when I found out that I could root my book. Lovin' android.
Sent from my rooted Nook Color with XDA app
NC is the first Android device i offically own. But i've been a phone hacker (WM and iOS) for three years. My husband is an android guy so i hopped on the bandwagon and love it.
Sent from my XDA app on my Nook Color
I'm fairly new to Android, but sadly a Backflip was my first.
I started device tweaking back in palmpilot days as a kid, got an iTouch, thought it was okay, but then got the Backflip, loved the hardware, but the software wasn't worth it.
after that I got a captivate for free, and now my brand new nookColor (already rooted) might be getting 2.2 before my phone does. xD Happy day!
I owned the original nook, and the nookColor is a different beast all together, and is a nice cheap alternative to the Galaxy tab and iPads. and it seems to be bringing in new blood to the dev community.

New to Android yes, my last phones were the Wing/Tilt, all Rom-afied, an i <3'ed WM6.
I had figured since Android was google-ie it would be (no offense to Devs) *****ie, like no Emus for copyright reasons an so forth and thats what i used my phones for
After the phones died an seeing the ugly new WM i went to tablets for a Micro-mobile device an saw i had to settle for Android or pay 400+ for underpowered Windows.
After coming up on google voice, an app that takes away from cell phone companies, i looked into Android more and saw how Linux-ie-free-ranged it was and got the NC for Christmas.
The NC specs probably make it beastly-er (an help most stuff not work) but i fix PC so enjoy that helps it feel Linuxie an doesnt make me think of Mac stuff which i figured was googles intentions.

A big x2 here
webOS is so much easier to navigate, but Adroid on a big screen is fantastic.
Hello!
So, I'm not really a noob to this, just to this account and posting on the site. Therefore, I am blocked out of the Dev section, which is the only one REALLY for the Kindle 2.
Anyways, I have a question or questions!
I have been a long time android user and loved to modify my phone and try out the tons of new ROMs out there and always have the latest software running.
At work for xmas we had a raffle and I won a Kindle Fire running OS version 10.2.4. Now, I never really touched anything Kindle or any related things so I was out of the loop. I looked some stuff up and surmised that I have a Kindle Fire 2, which is fairly new. I also seemed to find that the Kindle Fire series runs modified android, can be rooted, and the Original Fire has some ROMs for it.
Now, when it comes to the Kindle 2 things seem to be a little confusing.
As far as I can tell, you can root the device, with Qemu method, and install and run android apps? I could not find anything on getting a recovery on the system, and thus, no ROMs. Is this basically true?
If so, is there any news on headway for making this available? I want to work on getting JB or something that is true android running on the Fire but if we don't have much of any progress, then I will just wait.
Thanks!
It seems as though you and I have similar problems. I do have a Kindle 2 and I'm fairly happy with the the actual hardware but I'm not at all satisfied with Amazon's spammy OS. I'm hoping that I can either root it and download something like Go Launcher Ex to get an android style launcher or simply replace the current os with a viable ROM.
Unlike the OP, my experience with this type of thing is very limited and I'm having trouble understanding some of the jargon being used on many of the guides that have been provided on this subject. If anyone would be willing to walk me through this process, I'd really appreciate it. Oh, and my current version is 10.1.1.
I'm new to this device, and therefore new to researching about it, so if this question is redundant, I apologise. But even if it is, I hope someone will take a moment to help out.
Just got a Kindle Fire HD 7" 3rd gen for Christmas. The serial number starts with 00D2, and after it went through a couple updates, it's now running Fire OS 4.52 (build 11.4.5.2). I have a factory cord on the way, but I'm looking to be prepared for when it arrives. Is there a way to root this, yet? Can this device be rooted with Firerooter?
Also, if it is possible, I'm possibly looking to install a different ROM as well, and I'm hoping for some recommendations. I want something that offers more customization ability, and a wider set of options, but I don't need something as extravagant as CM 11, for example. I also don't want one that will lag on this device (I hate waiting), or consume the battery much faster than Fire OS 4 does. I'd prefer if it consumed less battery power honestly, but I figure that's asking for too much. Any help is appreciated.
Firerooter. Yes. KFSOWI modding community on Google+
So first hello everyone I just joined this community
I am actually just getting my first android phone, and I was looking around for something interesting
and found out that there is a phone like Nexus 5 which is capable of running all sorts of different OSes
like ubuntu, sailfish, firefox, android of course,... But since nexus 5 is a phone from 2013 I just didn't like the
idea of getting a phone which could become obsolete this very year in terms of specs.
So I was wondering where is Nexus 6 compared to Nexus 5 in terms of running all these differenet OSes,
and generaly in its support for modding and such...
thx

Well it has many custom ROM options as does Nexus5, official multirom, first to get updates etc.. But unfortunately, it doesn't have Firefox or Ubuntu or sailfish. They're made by multirom developer and I dont think there's been much done w those. I've tried them on my nexus 7 and wasn't impressed. So I wouldn't run it even if were offered. 6 is bigger but as far as specs.. That's when I hit Google. Lol
Got a 6,2013 7, 2013 7 LTE. I love my nexus. Can't go wrong. I still have the galaxy nexus from years ago.

Putting aside the issue of running non-Android OSes -- which comment #2 covers pretty well -- both the N5 and the N6 support Android-based custom roms very well. Both have unlocked bootloaders so you can load anything that will run on the hardware and flash a factory image of stock Android so you're back to where you started (including going back to various earlier Android versions.)
I've had a Nexus 5 since December, 2013 and it's been excellent -- A++. And I don't think it will be obsolete for at least another year (meaning we'll have updates from Google.) Add to that the exceptional value: you can pick up a new one on eBay for about $200 -- I think -- don't hold me to it.
I've also had a Nexus 6 since March of this year and, while I'm happy with it and wouldn't send it back, I must say that it has some issues. It has run very hot a few times. Read some reviews -- they're not all good. Plus, it's much more expensive than the N5. I like them both but, considering price, the N5 blows away the N6, IMHO.
Ah I see, well I think I'll first have to check them out hands on because N6 by specs seems to be huge and everyone says so, while looking on the pictures it doesn't really seems like that and I have used phones with 4 inch screens until now so really not sure about this ??

If it seems large at first you will get used to it. That big sexy screen will win you over
The more you use it, the better you'll like it!
Hello there! Semi Newb, long time XDA lover here. I believe this is my first post so please bear with me. My situation is quite weird, or i'm sure I could find help in another thread. All advise would be greatly appreciated! If this is the wrong place to post, please move.
I recently went to a goodwill store over here in the US near the west coast. For you who do not know it is a legit thrift store. I picked up a mint kindle fire HD 7 for $12.99. The reason it intrigued me is I love kindles but hate the os.
As I spent maybe an hour in the store looking threw it, I noticed it has SU installed and was rooted already. I thought great! One step covered. I was a little concerned about security, connecting to my wifi at home although. I loaded some software and nothing came up.
I have an older kindle ,rooted, and got an android os working myself. I have also rooted, used TWRP to do the same on an older phone. So, I do have some experience but I am totally rusty. That was years ago.
I booted the hd7 into recovery (or whatever it might be called and noticed TWRP was already on it. It confused me because it was still running the amazon os.
So, my questions. Can I load a custom ROM and flash it with TWRP right off the bat as it is? I have apps on it now and use it as is. Should I somehow do a complete wipe, unroot, and start from scratch. Or just can i go through TWRP to do so.
I really love this devise. The speakers are quite amazing, the screen is pretty amazing compared to my old old old kindle, and its pretty snappy speed wise. I would love to get gaps. (google apps) and an android rom.
Here is some confusing, maybe helpful, info I got from a devise info app. Cpu-z will not work so i used a crappy app.

No these stupid juvenile names really are from the original OS .
Obviously you can only have confidence is a hacked device if you are the one who hacked it. There is no way of knowing who put what into it and how it was rooted.
If you do decide to do a clean installation make sure you do NOT put a recent "up to date" OS on there, you will make it harder to modify.
