Hi guys, sorry for opening a new topic.
The question is this: A year ago I had a Xperia Ray, wich was a good phone. I did the stupid move of trading it for a LG optimus black, and this ****ty phone didn't last for more than 4 months... Then, according to my posibilities, I got an ipod touch 4G and a small normal phone to stay in touch. Long history.
Now I have the chance of getting a new smartphone. First, I wanted the Motorola Razr D3 and I liked it but I see no development for it here in XDA, probably because this phone is mainly focused to the latin market. That phone has a very cheap price, and I see that it has a guaranteed Android upgrade, this makes me wonder if the phone is gonna be upgradable to 4.4 Kitkat or just to Android 4.2 or 4.3... Nobody seems to know it at the moment.
Then, I started to check the Motorola Razr i closely, and I saw a video of it when technically crushes the samsung galaxy s3 in performance and multi-tasking, then I saw there's development for it and that's a good thing. Now one important question: You guys honestly think Razr i will be upgraded to Android 4.4 KitKat?
There would be a big chance considering that Motorola is now part of Google.
In conclusion, I have only $385 US dollars available for getting my next phone. I don't have any phone service plan, I hate them, I always get my phones to work in prepaid mode. And I consider that spending more than $500 US dollars for a phone is not very intelligent (sorry about this if I offend somebody), plus, I'm not precisely rich to get the latest flagships.
This are my options at the moment:
-Motorola Razr i: intel inside, good performance, but I don't know if will be updated to Android 4.4. It's one year old. They also say camera has bad quality.
-Motorola Razr D3: dual core, but kinda old chipset and GPU, it comes with the promise of an Android update guaranteed (they don't specify wich version tough)
-Xperia L: I like Sony, and this one comes with dual core and Adreno GPU 305, but Sony fails hard when it's about upgrading their phones.
-Xperia M: Same case as L, plus the fact that it isn't available in my country yet.
-Any other option you would want to recommend me?
Now, why I'm opening this topic here? Because I like Motorola and I consider that this brand is synonymous of quality. I got Motorola phones years ago and they were very good. I really like Razr i and D3, they're small, compact, beautiful and give stock Android experience. Please guys, give your opinion and recommendations and anwer the main question.

Yeh i recommend it, it's a nice phone and can get some updates, and it's a pretty smart, and have "low cost", if u can pay a bit more of course u can have some better phone with quad-core.
I find it a likeable phone, good for everything but it does not excel. Above all, reliable (after 9 months).
But it's currently updated to JB 4.1.1, and that's I think where it'll stay. (I kept it on the original 4.0.4 so I kept FM functionality and haven't noticed I've missed anything important). Moto are developing the Moto X (I think). The Razr is history, a bit of an in-betweener. So if a phone which gets the latest updates is important to you I wouldn't sadly touch the Razr i.
My other phone is an Xperia Z, bigger and better. But day to day I prefer the Razr i, and don't feel I'm missing out. But neither am I obsessed with the latest tweaks and mods. And because its processor is Intel, I think a bit of patience, intelligence, a willingness to learn and not to expect everything to be handed to you on a plate is in order; and it isn't a piece of electronic jewellery to impress your friends. But that's just like many good things in life.

I will give you some ideas regarding the razr i
Keep in mind that the z2480 processor from the Razr i is single core WITH hyperthreading.
Gaming is going to be limited mostly by the GPU on these "cheap" phones.
If the game is written with native ARM code there will be binary translation occurring on the fly on the Razr i / and some games are not compatible.
The phone lasts 2 days of typical use, or 1 day of really heavy use (For example 1 day with 7-8 hour screen time while indoors).
The camera benefits with software tweaks, and with decent/good lightning it can take very good photos. Take a look at these photos which were taken and lightly post-processed -- they are outdoor photos as you can see.

Just for the facts: I'm a gamer but not a phone gamer, I don't use my phones to play very much, just games like Tetris, Angry Birds and maybe Asphalt, I rather to play in my console or PC.
Also, photography is not a big deal for me, but yeah, I want good quality in the pictures and videos I take.
If somebody else wants to contribute with more opinions and information please go ahead.

Certainly not.
I used to have a Moto Defy, with a huge developer/modding community around the globe.
I Miss it badly now, as moto does give a f* for us. The intel thing make the modding very hard, and and I don't think the benefit is worth it.
Seriously thinking in make the switch to the Moto X, which probably will have a bigger base for modding.
I would not recommend the RAZR i anymore .. I won't judge too hard on it, because it's still not rooted yet (since one year exactly) and i was and still am used to rooted android devices. With the RAZR i after a year, battery life decreased, i am in constant RAM problems as the 1gb are full with not that much apps, so for example, if i switch from whatsapp to the browser and back, it most likely killed whatsapp by then. That's annoying as hell, especially because my old Desire HD did a better job with AOSP/4.04. The worst part is that the RAZR i isn't updated and there's no development such as cyanogenmod for it. For me, this means a lot. My RAZR i is in repair right now because i got it with a broken audio jack and i'm using the much older galaxy S2 by a friend, broken display, sensors sometimes fail, but it runs so much better. Why? Because of the rom, HellyBean/4.2.2, it runs so much better despite it has less ram and should have the slower processor.
Ah, almost forgot, the VERY handy camera button (which i absolutely love and miss on the S2 i use right now) somehow seems broken too, maybe software, most of the time i have to press it twice before it launches the camera. It triggers well though, so i guess that's software too. It just doesn't run that fine as i wished it would.
I would still recommend it, but ONLY if you're fine with the possibility that this probably won't be getting Kitkat. It's a very capable phone, I use it mostly for news email and browsing and like Omar said it usually lasts two days (something not a lot of phones can brag about, sadly.) the battery life I'd say is one of this phone's best features. If you root it and run a custom rom the phone preforms beautifully too. Just be prepared to live with *some* compatibility issues with certain apps.
In my opinion, buy it. For the price I'm seeing it at these days which is about ~150 dollars, it's a crazy good deal. Just don't expect it to see any updates from Motorola any time soon.

I think it's still a great phone, i dont want a bigger phone and if you too don't want anything bigger than this then i think that still there is no better phone as all the other are bigger with the same screen size or bigger screen size.
There might be one that i would trade it for but it's still a rumor just, huawei d2 mini, 4.3 screen, quadcore, 2gb of ram...
As far as defects in this phone i would say:
- Low earpiece volume( i will try viper4android app for this )
-It´s heavier on the top so it would be more confortable to use if that was reversed
-If you updating any app the phone will lag a bit
-Original camera is not great, the pics are a bit without color
I dont play on the phone i say nothing about that
If you buy this phone try the infinirom v6, its great, it leaves a lot of free ram and the rom it's basically the original one so everything works great but with a lot more ram free
I still think razr I is a great phone (not the best) even with 1 year past

The phone is rubbish with stock Samsung OS and software! Slow often glitchy, long waits for simple stuff like switching between apps or even going back to the home screen.
BUT - with a custom ROM this phone is potentially AWESOME. Lag is gone, battery life much better. I make my girlfriend jealous and she has an iPhone 5S, lol.
Slightly bigger screen than iPhone, much lighter, more sturdy, expandable memory, FM tuner, and with a custom ROM loads more features and better interface.
Some ROMs are not available for this phone but a lot are: Many available from maclaw.pl, I've tried CM11 but found Carbon (latest unofficial KitKat) has a few more options and some nice optimisations to maximise battery life without sacrificing performance at all.

With stock, framerates go slow sometimes - since going custom no probs at all. Play a lot of Real Steel World Robot Boxing, a 3D effects-heavy game, runs without a hitch. Screen quality good, graphics good.
I just got one yesterday as a replacement for my work phone. I was using an iPhone 4 on iOS 7. thdevicee mini is a about the same size, but I have the benefits of android, root, larger screen, and the Google kit Kat keyboard. compared to the outdated iPhone 4 it's a decent upgrade.
my personal line is a galaxy s4. the s3 mini doesn't compare, but given that the s4 is my primary device and the s3 mini is for work calls and email only it's pretty dang good.
its a good phone but we have only a few developers for custom roms

custom ROM support, or lack thereof, doesn't make a phone good or bad...
if flashing ROMs is a priority, get a nexus as AOSP based ROMs on pretty much anything else sucks. any device with a Google Play Edition version and an unlocked boot loader will be a very close second.
I think the S3 Mini is a very nice phone but there are many other phones which has better performance and battery but they are not so cheap like the S3 Mini The Moto G is okay but the Gaming Performance is bad.. sry for my bad english
It's typical mid-range, with a decent custom ROM every day tasks are quick and the phone is very responsive. It'll gobble up casual games easily and some old intensive games but unsurprisingly you're not going to playing brand new high end games!

I'm on Lollipop right now and kind of miss KitKat for some reason.
KK I think was simpler somehow letting it run a bit cleaner without so much background noise yet just as functional as LP and MM, it feels like Sony put more effort into catering KK for the Z3 than LP or MM.
LP seems the most refined and polished, and does have more optimizations, I'm getting great antutu scores with it using slim 4.1 with some additional tweaks.
MM still haven't tried the latest and greatest, still seems like too much work to get it to where I would like it with these half baked releases and problems and functional losses I keep reading about.
I get that with each release most of us get excited (myself included) to try the latest and greatest thinking it's going to be an improvement, but what has actually improved and what has been lost? KK was stable with a few extra audio features had good start-up times and seemed snappier even though Antutu tells me LP is better and then there's Marshmallow...
What's your opinion? Any good threads I missed covering this topic?

I kind of miss KitKat too and I did go back for a while, the reason I came back to MM Concept is because KitKat isn't perfect either. The notifications are miles better on LP and MM.
I agree that KitKat was simpler and Android 4.4.4 is probably my favorite version.
Antuntu and other benchmarks don't mean anything for daily use unless you play 3d games. There are videos on you tube showing that kitkat is faster: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hx06yJMVT-U
Faster boot on kitkat was due to Dalvik, since Android 5.0 default runtime is ART. But I don't see why is that important, we don't boot our phone 10 times per day, do we?
I don't think there is a discussion on the forums about this, I would like to se it too but I think that people just jump to latest and greatest software...
Month ago I had Xperia Play wit GingerBread, now I have Z3C wit LP. I've tried LP and MM deeper. It's a big difference from GB. KK is much closer to GB, more "classic Android". Lolipop has much better SystemUI and almost all modifications is for LP. For KK there is only few mods for sound and that's all. I like KK cause backward compatibility too. On newer Android many older games like FIFA 12 are unplayable.
Time for Marshmallow will come in future. Today I don't see any advantage to use Android 6. There are no apps or games requiring it. Almost all apps want max 4.4. Speed or multitasking is in my opinion the same in all of the three versions - honestly Z3C has too much power that few percent in terms of performance is useless. The only reason to use MM is Xperia X camera framework in SLIMM 1.9 ROM (but this version is too buggy) - on the other hand, for Lolipop there are Z5 camera files.
Generaly the best from these three is (in my opinion) Lolipop. It looks nice, it's "reskined" Kittkat with some new and better features, has biggest fan support, it's stable, fast and complete - all features working as they should and nothing is missing. Almost all Xposed modules are compatible or has version that is compatible with Lolipop. Marhsmallow breaks the classic - some features are on different places, are little bit different at all and some of them aren't there completely (stamina - in latest build is only "something" like stamina; Dualshock 3 support and so on). There is to much to improve. Kittkat is for old school users, which want better compatibility with older apps or want to play SHIELD games, cause they don't run on Lolipop or Marshmallow in my case.
I just installed KK for a go, and it's pretty snappy, I don't miss lockscreen notifications from LP because I don't use them. All the functions I use are still there and with Xperia Xposed all the UI tweaks I like are still available. I'm not sure I'll notice an improvement in battery life because it was still pretty good on LP but I'll watch for that as most reports tend to favour KK in this department. I was thinking about what you (Miicheall) said about gaming, and there's this game I've been wanting to try for awhile (Army of Darkness Defence) and could never get it to work on LP, so I just installed it on KK and hey what do you know it works!
I have to correct myself - SHIELD games like Half-Life 2 or Portal are playable on Lollipop - on MM not. Many games working on KK but on higher version not. So good luck and have fun

LP Is very stable, battery is great if you decide to take effort and install greenify and limit app permissions and wakelocks. Marshmallow honestly at this point is not that good with most users reporting the Doze feature being somewhat useless
You're having a laugh LP was the worst OS update by Google for some time, it's been beset with nothing but trouble.
I know this is not the norm according to reports but monitoring battery usage with 3c toolbox LP in idle is drawing less ma than KK in idle, both are set up with stamina... same settings with sync, gps, and lte off, about 50% brightness... Go figure. I'm using both with Moly82'm debloated versions for comparison so that could have something to do with it. LP shows about 100 more apps when booting VS moly82's KK version too so that isn't factoring in as an advantage with battery life.
I'm also liking the ability for 32-bit audio output in lollipop which is wonderful and does make an audible improvement with Neutron, Camera mods for lollipop are better as far as I can tell, however now I can't play that Army of Darkness game.
I tried some MM versions and I hate the swipe for app search feature and the mods and tweaks I like aren't there yet so I will continue to wait on that, but it does seem like the smoothest version of all.
They are all giving me problems with the stock email attachment feature, is there something wrong with an update or something?
I held onto KK as long as possible until my phone had to be sent in for warranty due to a speaker failure. The Sony repair center loaded the latest version of LP onto my phone and it was actually bug free (unlike the early versions). However, it never had the battery life of KK. When using the phone, it had the same rate of battery drain as KK, but when idle, it seemed to drain twice as fast as KK. It seemed like Stamina mode in LP only gave me the equivalent battery life of KK without Stamina mode. SO, with KK, I could get 2 days of usage without stamina, and nearly 4 days with it. Both of those numbers were cut in half with LP.
I put up with it for as long as I could though until about two weeks ago. I finally flashed KK onto my phone again and WOW, it is refreshing to no longer worry about my battery throughout the day. Plus, the pull down notification menu in KK is way better! It's so annoying to have to swipe down twice in LP/MM/N. Plus, ticker style notifications are far less intrusive than the banner style in LP/MM/N. Finally, I just like the black background with white text that is displayed in the pull down menu. It seems so much cleaner to me than the grayish-green that LP/MM/N uses.
The one thing I miss about LP is the banner notification for phone calls when you're using the device. KK takes over the whole screen and is very intrusive. I downloaded an app that tries to mimic this LP feature, but it only works 80% of the time. I still plan to stick with KK until I upgrade to a new device in 2017.

Which are the sd card restrictions you mentioned?! I'm using my sd card without problems on Kitkat (for a week now) and I do only care about the mass storage mode,a feature that is provided on both KK and MM versions.

Only system apps can write to the external SD card for some reason in KitKat unless you're rooted.
I definitely think KK has the best battery and is the most stable, but I wish there were more (or any, really) camera mods for it. You have to be on at least LP for there to be any decent mods, although I do think KK has the smoothest image stabilization for video recording. However, image quality takes a big hit.

Hadn't mentioned that, guess I don't need this one. Kitkat still runs smoothly by the way.
So given that there are camera mods only for LP and MM - which OS has given you the best battery performance in your experience?
Isn't it worth upgrading to MM just to be sure to have all latest security patches?

For me MM is the way to go, just flash any of custom stock based MM roms and run slimcore debloat, I'm having great battery performance lasting me whole day (i get 4-6h of sof with 70% of that beeing youtube) and it seems like the most fluid and eye pleasing experience, and for camera mods, I would only suggest unlocked camera, others are kinda gimmicky, but best and only way to find out what suits you is to try it yourself, you can see that in this thread only we have a lot of divided opinions.

I've previously used a Redmi Note 4X and a currently use a ZUK Edge, and no matter how hard I tried to get used to MIUI/ZUI, I eventually got sick of the missing functionality and quirks of the stock roms on these phones.
I was amazed how much better my experience was after I switched to AOSPExtended on the RN4X and Mokee on the Edge. Looking at the threads there are plenty of AOSP/Lineage based roms for the Mix, but not many detailed bug lists. I'm very tempted to pick one up now that the price has gone down, and I want something with better battery life than the 3100mAh Edge.
Can anyone recommend the current most stable and functional rom for the Mix? What are some pros and cons of the different roms like crDroid, AOSPExtended, Lineage, etc?

Out of the box, MIUI (or MIUI-based ROMs like EPIC) will have better battery life judging by comments made in RR/LOS etc threads. I don't pay attention to battery life because I'm never far from a charger and I don't do anything that heavily drains it, like gaming. The ZUK Edge has the same SoC as the Mix but it has a 4400mAh battery so I would assume that battery life will naturally be longer, even with the slightly larger screen. Other users that pay more attention to battery life like albertoduqe will be able to give you more insight.
As for bugs, I have never experienced anything major. I've only tried RR, LOS, Viper and AOSP Extended but the only annoying one I encountered was losing the proximity sensor (reboot to fix). Some other complaints are speakerphone echo, slow to wake from fingerprint scanner (mostly gone now IIRC), loss of sound when switching back from bluetooth headset and upside down front-facing camera (fix).
Since they all pretty much seem to use the same base, you'll see the same issues posted on many of the threads for those ROMs. In that same vein, much of the same functionality can be found on them all too. You will find some stuff missing on some, but it'll often be minor. Like on Viper you don't have full control over the nav bar. Yes, you can add extra buttons but they can only do a small number of things, but on RR you can configure them to do virtually anything (and on long/double tap too). The only way you'll find out all their functionality is to flash them, or at least ask in their respective threads. If I leave MIUI (43rd time) then I will go back to RR as the dev is the most responsive and any issues get addressed very quickly.
The pros for MIUI are better battery life (but by how much really?), better camera quality (I've seen this claimed a few times but never saw an explanation as to why) and smoother general experience (I can confirm that MIUI/EPIC are indeed less prone to stuttering etc, even after tweaking, especially with MIUI 9).

All the one's I tried were very similar, viper os
Just edged it, slightly quicker fingerprint unlock and better proximity sensor. Don't rule out miui 9 it is very good.
I would say that the unofficial AOKP ROM was probably the smoothest and had the best battery life. Trouble is it doesn't seem to be maintained and no NFC is implemented.
RR is great, feature packed but I have always had some small bug that prevented me from having it as a daily driver. For example, last build would not allow me to change from charging to transfer files. The one benefit of RR is the maintainer is very active and responds.
For me, the official LOS has been the most stable, albeit a little boring.

Sounds fine by me, on Lineage I'm not really interested in customization and bells and whistles, beyond the notification quick toggles

I think you will be very happy with LOS then.
I have tried all the others and always return to it. It just works.
I've been given a white and gold 3T that was no longer needed. The battery is a bit shot and the screen has burn in on the status bar. I was thinking, if I send it off for a new battery by OnePlus, is it worth using?
My current phone is a Pixel 2XL, but I am missing the headphone jack and the cell reception isn't the best...
Is the 3T decent on the stock rom? Or is it better on a custom rom/kernel?
I only really use YouTube, Gmail, Netflix and messenger... Just want it to be smooth enough.

The stock ROM updated to the latest security patch seems okay. YouTube is a bit laggy compared to my Pixel 2Xl.
I do prefer the size of the 3T though, it's really compact.
Would a custom kernel speed up the stock ROM? On apps like YouTube?
Also, I have managed to get the WiFi calling option to appear in settings, but from memory, I don't think it actually works? I am on the 3 UK network.
I sent mine a couple of months ago for a new battery and it's 100% worth it.
Custom kernels do speed up the stock ROM but your battery life might suffer a bit., so if you want the best experience I'd suggest a custom ROM based on Pie (e.g. Havoc/Luis' Resurrection Remix). Q ROMs are good enough but most of the better ones (as far as battery life is concerned) don't support device encryption yet.
I cannot comment on WiFi calling as I don't use it at all.

Would that be a Pie custom ROM and a custom kernel?
My only concern with custom ROMs is that I use banking apps and other apps that then may not work when rooted or on custom firmware. Does Magisk get past this? I have been using the 3T this morning and other than the unusable battery, the phone is quite nice. I like the size, the performance is decent enough (I expect it'll improve on a custom ROM) and the screen is brighter than my Pixel 2XL. It is definitely slower though, apps like gmail take a couple of seconds longer to load, but I am never in much of a rush!
How much did OnePlus charge you for a battery replacement? Can it be sent off to them when on a custom ROM, or does it need to be fully stock for them to do any work on it?

Havoc/Resurrection Remix etc are custom ROMs which come bundled with their own custom kernel. Mind you, Pie versions of custom ROMs are mainly to be found in their up-to-date threads (even if they're updated for the Q versions). Check the most thanked posts on the sidebar in the Havoc thread for an easy way to get to the updated Pie ROM with the latest security patches.
Magisk does pass CTS and banking apps/Google Pay work in my case, but it does need a module and some editing in order to work. The MagiskHide Props Config module does that job, you'll need to configure it - selecting OnePlus as brand and 3T as model, latest update, works though. Here's a quick link to the module's thread with info etc. You'll also need Busybox (available again as a module in Magisk) in order to get the Props Config module to work.
The battery replacement was free even though the initial quote was around 36€ so around 30 quid - don't know why, might have been because of the free out-of-warranty camera replacement I requested as well. I'd suggest doing that too, the original OP3 and 3T cameras are known to stop focusing after a while and OnePlus offers a free fix even if the phone is out of warranty.

Okay, thanks again. A battery is about £15 online and replacement is very easy, so I am not sure whether to do it DIY or get them to do it and hope they may do it for free if I claim to have camera issues? (it focuses fine at the moment...)
I've had fairly good experiences with Resurrection Remix in the past when I dabbled with ROMs on my Nexus 6P (I stopped when I got my Moto Z Play as it never really needed it) So I'll give that a go tonight and see how it performs. The battery truly is shot, my partner who owned it before always had it at 100% brightness and used it whilst charging, so it degraded very quickly. As did the OnePlus 5 I gave her last year.!!!
I wish screens were cheaper for it as it has severe burn in on the notification bar, due to it being used at full brightness all the time... but the rest of the phone is in mint condition, so it seems daft to pay a fair amount of money to get rid of some burn in...

You're welcome! I chose the RMA way just to be extra safe, I wanted an OEM battery after reading mixed reviews concerning third party batteries (the general consensus is that they're not as long lasting, but the ones from ReplaceBase should be at least half decent) and the price difference has been worth it, for now. My autofocus was just starting to malfunction when I applied for the RMA, you could try and give it a shot.
Yeah, screens are expensive and the chances of getting an LCD display or a flickering screen when using a custom ROM are rather high and not worth the price if the burn-in doesn't bother you that much.

Is it just autofocus that is the issue? Tap to focus works fine. Autofocus does seem a bit temperamental....
What is your battery like post-replacement?
OnePlus customer service say they will replace camera free of charge (it doesn't seem too bad, but may as well?) And they will replace the battery for £24.50

Assuming I can get WiFi calling to work, I think I will get it replaced. As long as I can get 5 hours SOT out of it across a mixed usage day, that'd be the maximum I'd ever need. I rarely ever go over 3.5-4 hours SOT on any day on any of my phones.

SoT is, well, extremely subjective but I usually get around 4.5/5 hours SoT if mainly outdoors on LTE. WiFi, on the other hand, I can easily get around 6.5 to even 7 hours SoT. That's mainly Reddit/YouTube/Telegram/a bit of Instagram.
Autofocus started getting way more erratic than usual, tap to focus sometimes did nothing - this will generally degrade to a point where the camera won't even focus in manual mode. Also, backup your data before sending the phone (and maybe leave it on stock OOS). You'll basically start fresh with a locked bootloader and OOS 9.0.6.

Oh wow, really? That is better that I would have imagined it would get!
I am hoping it may work out if I stay on stock as I do prefer sticking to stock these days, but if not, I will give RR a go.

Yes. I was told yesterday by OnePlus that they will fix it for free even though it is well out of warranty

Sorry for the delay - RR, Havoc and custom ROMs in general would both feel smoother and more battery-friendly over stock, but I don't know if it's that huge of a difference. Haven't really tried Pie OOS that much but it felt like there was a bit more stutter when compared to custom ROMs.
