I just got a new S6 (SM-G920T), 5.1.1, COK1.
I've been using my S4 with WifiTether app (rooted) to hotspot/bypass tethering limits. Does anyone have experience doing something similar with the S6? If so, do you have any suggestions for ROM? Is Wifi speed a problem, or any functionality issues with rooted S6? I won't upgrade to the S6 and root if getting the wifi to work is an issue.
A different post suggested this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmo...nt/rom-sow-nice-rom-v1-0-oi1-tweaked-t3229591
Is it still the way to go?

Unfortunately I dont have a high speed internet option (rural area). I use slightly over the tether limit each month.
I'd just like to know if I can root/tether S6 in the same way as S4 without any surprises before I risk tripping Knox on my new phone.

Looking at link to rom you posted in op it looks like they have a working native Hotspot but it entails rooting and flashing the rom, if thats what you want to do; go for it.
There is no way of running a tether hack without root.
I'm thinking your S4 is rooted w/tether hack and you haven't rooted your S6.
Don't think there is anyway of not tripping knox at present, and the deknoxed feature of the rom is probably a build.prop change to not display tripped Knox on screen.

I am not sure why you would need to. It has WiFi and 3G onboard... unless you mean the other way round, in which case YES you can by going into settings/wireless and networks

Well, The Verizon model is cheaper, I'm with AT&T and I don't want a 3G plan but I want to be able to tether it to my phone so that I can still get instant upload and all the benefits while I'm away from "Wifi"

Foxfi should work.
I have a Galaxy Cam 2 and Bluetooth is also an option.
Most current models of Samsung phones have the "hacked" tether blocked, even if rooted. I found that the Wifi Tether Router app by Fabio Grasso in the Play store works perfectly and I gave up on waiting for the hack to be fixed. It's not free, but it's only a few $ (and worth it).
I know nothing it definite when it comes to the MotoX+1 as we know little to nothing about it, but it's likely safe to assume it will be as secure if not more than the MotoX.
I NEED to have Wifi Tether on my phone, it is an absolute must. I currently have an unlimited data plan with Verizon and I use tethering on my Galaxy S3 nearly all the time. Is wifi tethering possible on the Verizon Moto X? Is root required?

Buy the developer edition. It is the only guaranteed way that you will be able to root, and [probably] use WiFi tether...
Yes I'm considering that option, wonder what Dev edition x+1 will cost
I'm using Verizon now for home internet via a tablet with hot spot turned on. I moved to a rural area and no broadband is available. I don't want satellite because I can not game with it so I am stuck using Verizon. As you all know you have to pay per GB and its quite expensive. I need an alternative for internet and no carrier with unlimited data will allow you to tether. It looks like TMobile will be my best bet carrier wise and I know you can get around it so TMobile doesn't see that you are tethering.
Here is my question, I have searched for a few hours and looking at my options. I've found numerous places that tell you how to do it, but none of them have been updated for months. When you read the FoxFi comments everyone's claiming it doesn't work after the Lollipop update. Even found a few threads on here with recent comments, but no answer. I want to get a phone from TMobile just to tether the unlimited data. 5 GBs isn't enough for what I need. So can anyone confirm a method or point me in the directions of a thread that can tell me what is working currently? I don't want to start service with TMobile and it not work.
Thanks for anyone that can help.

Im on a lollipop rom on note 4 with tmobile, and I modified the files myself. Seems to work thus far.
Your not rooted? Just added the new APN with no VPN? And no app?

I am rooted. You must be referring to wifi tether app or something. I'm on a custom rom. Most (if not all) the tethering mods require root access. Maybe someone else can chime in on tether without root.
Ok this is a start lol. Looking at the Tmobile prices I don't think Note 4 would be a smart move for what I will use it for. Would the same methods work with an S3? you may not know worth a shot azking.

I've had s3, note 2, and now note 4 for my last 3 phones, all on the tmobile network. S3 is great and has a a lot of past development still available. Honestly though I'd go with something like the note 2 or 3 or s4. Those have better more recent development and can do the same things if not more. Good luck in your search
Thanks for the help bud I'll look into it more after the 7 day test drive.
On my regular N910T I had a 5.0.1 Rom that had working unlimited tether, but I got a replacement device because of GPS problems and it came with 5.1.1 (N910T3) and I couldn't find any way to have unlimited tether... So if anyone has a working solution for unlimited tethering on DOG1 for the N910T3 I'd really appreciate it. (I tried the IPV4 apn and wifi tether router and also the modded tether apk from the s4 forum both didn't work)

I think I might be headed to the same issue. GPS on my phone is really acting up. My Note 2 which is several years old works better. Im going to contact them and see what they say. Did they send you a refurbished or new phone ? I might request a new one and if they send me a t3 model i might just sell the note and get another phone.
DirecTV customer who can come to AT&T for $140/mo, 2-lines Unlimited Everything. Fine print gotcha is no tether/hotspot.
Is there a work-around since I guess my rooting days are over with this phone?
Thanks.
if you have root you can flash the hotspot hack and this will get your hotspot to work, now if you dont have root.
what i did was download clockworkmod app on your galaxy s6 from play store and then follow the instructions it gives you to tether to your computer.
if you need detailed info i have it, i just wrote down some basic stuff to not waste my time
I don't think the S6 is rootable anymore?
Bumping this as I'm thinking about jumping on the unlimited data deal and getting an S6 edge during the BOGO free deal coming up. Any update OP?

unlikely that any newly purchased device will still come with rootable firmware.
