Are there Amy methods to root after the OTA update on ATT MOTO X? I bought a moto x and ran the update before researching on how to root it. I'm currently showing version 139.12.54.
You can't, unless you have unlocked bootloader. I don't know if you can downgrade and then follow the procedure to keep root over OTA.

Yup. I'm stuck on this boat too. Did the ota. Can't downgrade. Can't root. If there is no intention to unlock the bootloaders for At&t, then I know I'm gonna put this on swappa for cheap.
But I think I'm going to hold out for a bit seeming that I'm really liking stock, and I have other phones to Dev on. I hope unlock comes our way.

The popular carriers like AT&T and VZW don't allow it - so that prevents a large group from doing it.
Cause most carrier phones don't have their option to unlock the boot loader. But yes if you do unluck the boot loader you can root. But you can also root without unlocking thanks to jcase's pwnmymoto root method.

Most people aren't talking about it because I guess they figure you know whether or not you bought a phone that could be unlocked. If you are bootloader unlocked then yes - you just flash su.zip in cwm or twrp and you are good to go.
So if you are on Sprint or T-mobile, US Cellular or international go for it.
Unlocking the bootloader voids warranties as well...doing it through the website makes that void permanent whereas if you did it without the website you can still have your phone go through the warranty process as long as you unroot and relock the bootloader. that's what i love about the nexus devices
Ugh!!!
Glad I ran into this. I was going through the process to unlock my XT1080M on the site...looks like I'm waiting for the non-Chinese path.

While this may be true for Nexus devices, it doesn't apply to the Moto X.
The Moto X bootloader has 3 states:
Locked, Unlocked, and Re-Locked
Once you have unlocked, if you subsequently re-lock, the status changes to "Re-Locked". You can NEVER get it back to "Locked". So regardless of whether you get your code from the official Moto Unlock site or the Middleman, they still know that you had unlocked previously. There is no way around this...

Exactly! I'm not sure what he is waiting for. An BL unlock exploit to come along? Dan Rosenburg (author of the Razr M Bootloader exploit) has said himself that it is extremely unlikely that a new Moto BL unlock exploit will EVER come along.
@Radio2006 : The "china" method could end tomorrow. It is 99.999% sure to be the ONLY way you will ever get unlocked. If being unlocked is important you, I would urge you not to wait.
Its China method quick, before it ends again....maybe for good....
Or it won't happen. The bootloader won't be "cracked". If it could be, it would be by now.
I'd get in on the China method, or accept a life of no proper root for your device. And no developer made updates after the X stops getting official updates.

Not sure. He is in Canada so I assume he has a Rogers XT1058(same hardware as the AT&T phone) and unlocked his bootloader.
I believe there are flashable zips that can be used with a rooted phone, however the process isn't as simple as flashing the full image with rsdlite.

Let's clarify things,
1) my bootloader is unlocked because I have a Rogers variant
2) flashing touched Roms through twrp recovery only, yes flashing flashable 1053 roms
3) I have never attempted to rsdlite any firmware other than rogers firmware
Is this clear enough, I do not want anyone to brick there phone, had 3 soft bricks to this point myself, its a frigging pain in the butt and yes they all involved flashing Roms. The moto is a great phone but its also very finicky
My suggestion is wait for your carriers firmware to be available and rsdlite it.
Yesterday I again had a soft brick just from restoring a nandroid, so I rsdlite back to the pre camera firmware, I had it downloaded already. I then accepted the new camera ota and everything went fine until I tried to flash twrp recovery, it wouldn't flash, so I tried to rsdlite back to the pre camera firmware, no go. It seems that I can't downgrade from an ota even with a unlocked boot loader
Edit: patience, obviously we are all going to receive kitkat soon enough and I believe AT&T is next up, US carriers first and then all other carriers.
Trust me I want kitkat too but not willing to jump through and dig a frigging hole I can't get out of

sIm Lock, aka carrier lock, has nothing to do with bootloader unlock.
To bootloader unlock, you need the unique code for the phone. Likely due to carrier contracts, Moto doesn't give out the bootloader unlock code for ATT, Verizon, or Republic Wireless, but does for many/most other carriers. At one point there was a web site in China and a Middleman who access to Moto's list or database of codes which included even those Moto didn't publicly make available (I.e ATT, VZW, RW) but that dried up a while ago. JCase found a vulnerability in the bootloader on the 2013 X, and came out with/updated his Sunshine tool with a hack exploiting that vulnerability to unlock the bootloader (without having the unique code) on the 2013 X too, but it doesn't work once the X has been upgraded to 4.4.4. Sunshine DOES work on the 2013 X if it has never been upgraded past 4.4.3.
Thanks for letting me know. I got the phone in August and it was on 4.4.3, but then I accidentally installed 4.4.4. If only I had known that I wouldn't be able to root it after that.... It really sucks because I really want Viper4Android on my Moto X.

Jcase has been teasing us with word of the next sunshine version working for 4.4.4. It was projected to release early January but they must not be done putting all their awesome into that sauce. Be patient and I bet you'll have an unlocked bl soon enough.
In an abundance of caution, I would probably hold off taking the lollipop update coming soon in case it patches whatever vulnerability they are exploiting.

You should be able to use the same web site to get the bootloader unlock code, many others with the European and Asian XT1052 have been able to get their bootloader unlock code there.
If you get the code in an email, it will either work, or give you an error if its not the right code. It will not brick your phone.

See the one stop shop for root thread in general. Right at the top of the page.
All current root methods are there, based on device versions and state. ?
There is a untested way to unlock the bootloader but is very risky, you must open your device. Anyway if you are so brave to try this procedure http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-ultra/general/droid-ultra-maxx-brick-recovery-t2830806 look at this guide at the second point, first you must drill the plate on the ram chip, you must short the right pin on your moto x to ground (i attach a photo, pointed by the orange arrow) then follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/how-to-resurrecting-bricked-moto-x-t2629057

Verizon (non-Dev Edition), ATT and Republic Wireless can not unlock their bootloader. It has been this way since the 2013 X went on sale.
Its likely due to contracts between Moto and those carriers.

Sunshine relies on your phone being rooted, or the tool being able to obtain temp root.
4.4.4 on the 2013 Verizon Moto X, or most/all 2013 Moto X on locked bootloader, hasn't been rooted, and the tool can't temp root the phone.
So if you have 4.4.4 on the 2013 Moto X, do not expect Sunshine to work.
If you have never updated the 2013 Moto X to 4.4.4, then Sunshine will likely work just fine.

Did you update everything or did you individually update components? I think it came down to whether or not people updated the bootloader when they updated to 4.4.4. There was a way to update without updating the bootloader and I think it's those phones that sunshine works for. I'm far from an expert though; I could definitely be wrong.

People were being "cute" and manual flashing SBF's but skipping GPT.BIN and Motoboot.img (two parts that can't be downgraded).
However, as I understand it, this doesn't change the fact that 4.4.4 can't be rooted or temp rooted by Sunshine, which prevents it from working. It does mean that if done this way, they could likely downgrade to their previous SBF which matches the GPT.Bin/Motoboot (probably 4.4.2), and still use sunshine.

Notice he says "XT1060 4.4.3 VZW - Rooted" Um, XT1060 never had 4.4.3, only 4.4.2 and 4.4.4. So I'm not sure we'll get a straight answer, because I replied asking for clarification, and didn't get a response.

Oh wow. Yeah, something is a bit off there.
JCase said something a while ago about a bunch of exploits he would be releasing. I was/am really hoping there would be something that we could use to gain root on the 2013 Moto X, but with his last comment on twitter, I'm not so sure that is going to happen.
If I were in any other situation, I would be looking for a new phone, but two things are preventing it. First, I love the Moto X and haven't found another phone I like better. Second, MY moto x is already unlocked (I held on to 4.4 until Sunshine came out). Its my wifes and my fathers that are not. Somehow they ended up on 4.4.4 without knowing it. They claim it just happened while they were sleeping. I more quickly suspect they tapped on it thinking it was an app update from the app store. But in any event, their phones are still locked.
