What would you do? - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
today I got my Note 5 (920C) :victory: first impressions are that it's big, dense, heavy and IDK weird.... but that's normal for me the first days are always like that. My History with Smartphones the last years go like this S4, Note 3, S6 edge (all of'em rooted) and now the Note 5. Loved the S6 edge but after the Note 3 I wanted a 5.7" screen all the time.
Anyway.... now to my current struggle.
What would you do? Would you root right now or test drive it stock and pass some time till 6.0.1 drops? My device has UAE csc and I saw the CAM csc 6.0.1 doesn't even has German as a language.
I don't care about Knox because I don't have a warranty and Samsung Pay is never gonna happen in Germany anyway....
And what about the Deep Sleep issue? I still haven't figured out what causes this issue and if it's a big deal or not! Just read somewhere if I would root for the first time on M this wouldn't affect me. Is that right and another reason to wait for official OTA with my csc?
would love it if someone could give me advice.

it's up to you you want to taste stock or want to rom and flash any custom rom...
there is a fix for deep sleep in MM but yes no german language is available yet.. and i do not prefer you to flash MM yet...

I root because some of my apps need root access and I like to de-bloated and customize stock roms myself. I don't need custom roms.

Do you know if it's true that deep sleep issue doesn't happen if rooted on MM? that would be another reason to wait. I mean it can't take much longer anymore. The other reason is that I have to set up my phone how I like it and probably after MM I have to do it again.... not having German sucks but wouldn't be a massive problem.
but thanks so far for ur advice.

If you don't have a warranty and you're not going to use Samsung Pay, I'd say go for the root. No doubt whatever ROM and kernel you choose will be updated to MM.

I too am waiting to root until I get MM on my Note 5. I am a bit concerned about the deep sleep feature though.

Galaxy S2 to Note 3, First thing to do?

Coming from a Galaxy S2 to a Note 3. Read awesome reviews and the phone looks like the real deal. As soon as I take it out of the box what's the first thing I should do?
Can you delete the ATT preinstalled apps or no?
Maximum Battery life? I read to disable WIFI scanning so I'll do that. Anything else?
Also if it is 4.3 should I root it? Is a rooted device tons better then stock firmware?
I'm not a phone guru so please answer so I can understand. Thanks
Wait for the Note 4, possibly coming out in September..

bcoz its samsung.
Yes I believe so
last samsung phone for me
(i'm really serious..dissapointed with the fact they have 10 note 4 versions, slow updates, not even saying around when they will be released and up until 4.4.4, touchwiz still lags)
my next phone will be either a motorola or an LG.
no harm in waiting few more days!! no need to feel butt hurt its still 5.0 , note 4 might get 5.0.2 at release

I reckon they should synchronize the release, btw they are definitely reading this forum, just to see how many people has issues with this device.
I see nothing special in android 5.0 update.
Still touchwiz will override all the lollipop UI changes, and touchwiz has far more features than any aosp will have.
I general android update is only insterested on nexus and gpe devices there you actually see that Google has on it's mind about interface and features. All the Google apps are already updated on every device anyways, so it is not like iOS there you wait for new update as it brings newer web browser update/fixes and so on...

Hey i just want to say to those who thinks its not anything better, they need to think again. My wifes S5 has it, the battery is much better, in fact she went 3 days before needed a charge to where before on 442 she had to charge it every other day. Plus it seems alot smoother than my note 4. I personally hope they present it when its a stable product. So I am patient
Judhin say it there is nothing special except one thing, Writing to SD card again that's the only reason I need Lollipop.
thats regular from Samsung
and i bet the lollipop update will not came with any features just changing the number from 4.4.4 to 5.0.2 in
(About Phone)
actually Samsung doesn,t respect the customers for an example
1.TouchWize still lagging !
2.Finger print sensor is *** from S5 and they re installed in NOTE 4 ! without enhancement
3.Waterproof why its not available on NOTE 4 !!
4.Quick Charge its not really charge in 30 min its take about 40 !!
5.Thousands of editions of NOTE 4 to make developing and Mods not compatible !!
6.And i will not forget the Filled RAM !!!

Ok thats would be a feature, and ART instead of Dalvik. But it is like OTG, someone need it someone don't.

Yes, and? What's your problem in this?
Your Note 4 doesn't function anymore now the Note 3 has an earlier update?
Ask yourself: Why did I buy this phone?
1. Because of it's great functions and other things
2. To complain, if earlier models gets an update first (and my phone doesn't have the "great functions" anymore)
Get a life!
I just don't get the game Samsung is playing....from my point of view the newest devices should get the firmware update first then the rest. But hey, I wouldn't be surprised if the note 2 gets lollipop before the note 4 since it is scheduled to get it too hahaha
Just awaiting game with Samsung.
Surely they must have had a problem with the testing on the Note 4 , maybe they have came across a few bugs with the note 4,
Must admit i am surprise that the Note 3 received the update first.

Just make it fair and square, I somehow don't agree with some of your points.
1. I do not suffer any lag at all with the touchwiz on note 4.
2. I agree that the fingerprint sensor is shxt, but this is because apple is having the best supplier on the market.
3. I don't feel any problem with waterproof, you don't always throw your phone into water. When you need it, get a waterproof pack.
4. No comment as not an important issue to me with that 10 minutes. Just use an powerbank if really urgent to save up that 10 minutes.
5. A lot of note 4 variant is carrier provider and US fault, they purposely request Samsung to make separate version for them.
6. Something wrong with your system as LMK will manage your RAM itself. I do agree that the RAM usage is quite high but since no effect to smoothness and performance, why need to worry about that?
Thread Closed.
And there is need for a new thread for this ?.. just another reason to poke the flame horse..

To Root or Not To Root

Now that I have upgraded from the Note 3 to Note 5, I am hoping that rooting without tripping Knox will be a possibility.
However, I must admit that if it's not possible that for the first time in quite a while, I would be content to not root, because I'm interested in Samsung Pay which relies on Knox.
I am still open to the fact that if there's a way to root and that there is a good, stable ROM in development available, I would be willing to give it a try.
Your thoughts?
I'd still root.
I would still root, just because I like using Tasker and a bunch of stuff in it isn't enabled. I also use Google Wallet anyway, so Knox is a non-issue for me.

I feel the same as you. I've been rooting and romming for the past four years and this is the first time that I've had no desire to root.
I hope they will release the Ping-Pong root soon for the Note 5 as I would like to try out the various payment solutions coming out in the next months.
I didn't care with the S6 Edge as I thought it would have taken ages to find a 'stealth' root, but then... :banghead:

Oh you have a s6 edge ? I figured you were talking about root a note , then again i see youre in Italy so yeah no note for you either ...
I'm a rooter and ex flasholic but this time around I might not due to Samsung Pay. If I end up liking and using it, I won't root my phone but if I don't then I'll root and flash a Rom of choice as usual.

I'm in agreement and have thanked those for responding to my post. I don't post often and respectfully welcome everyone's views and opinions.
If we get root I am all over it, I don't care about tap to pay... Takes me about the same time to pull out my phone and tap it as it does my card so yeah..
benefits of root outweigh the benefit of reaching into a different pocket to make a payment.
not sure yet
I too was an HTC M8 flashoholic, Ive been sober for a week now with the Note 5. I have to say it has been very smooth, even Touchwiz and trouble free as well as blazing fast. I do miss the Viper4Android and Titanium Back up abilities. But this phone needs some time for the developers to create some magic before I will root. There will be an OTA update soon and rooting will lose that ability, not to mention as of now there arent an abundance of ROMS to choose from. Also I have caught up on my sleep from the lack of flashing roms!
DR
Sprint 64g Black Note 5
Given the fact that I live in Canada and it will probably be 3 years or so before we can use Samsung Pay that makes my decision easier. I tried to stick with unrooted this time around so I can get the "promised" monthly security updates easily. However, Lightflow has that persistent notification if you dont have a rooted phone which is bothering me probably more than it should.

What is taking Samsung so long to update to LP 5.1.1 ?

I heard that LP 5.1.1 is the most stable. We are stuck in 5.0.2 on Note 4. So is my Tab S. So is my Alpha phone. All at 5.0.2
Why is Samsung so slow? I think they might have abandoned us.
Samsung screw up on Note 5 and all the updates are slow.
Its a bad company.
It's not Samsung. They updated. The update is now with US carriers. They are holding it up. Sprint, I believe, already pushed the 5.1.1 update to their phones a couple weeks ago.

I heard from an a distant uncles girlfriend, second cousins best friends brother we should be getting it very soon.
There are a few 5.1.1 custom roms available. But if you are not rooted or you need T-Mobile features, you'll have to wait for T-Mobile to push the update.
Best decision I ever made was to install a custom rom. I currently have 5.1.1 and do not have to deal with the ever slowing TouchWiz. After StageFright was announce the very next day the developer of the rom i'm currently using patched it up, the only downside is I did have to sacrifice Wi-Fi calling but soon enough Android M will come out and that will fix it.
geez cant you wait, you see the C is getting the update, and then you make unnecessary threads about the update, just be patient..
if you cant wait, ill buy your note 4 for 200$ :victory:

Been using PopRocks v10x and it is amazing, fast and stable. ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...procks-rom-v1-tw-rom-bases-tmo-stock-t3096286 ). Now if you want to try 5.1.1 there are many choices to choose from and can recommend them all.
Just me, but I think Samsung is in no hurry to push it 5.1.1. I guess there mentality is if they (note 4)users want 5.1.1, buy a note 5, which for me it ain't happening.
My note 4 came with 5.1.1. There should be a few customs floating around, such as TekXodus.
Samsung and the note 5 is very disappointed. I will stay on Note 4
FUN FACT:
Tmobile already has 5.1.1 and it is installed on Note 4s with the SM-N910T3. You can buy it in the store right now or warranty your phone and get it. Both of those options will be faster than waiting for the carrier to release it.
Tmobile gets a thumb down for this move. Uncarry that update Uncarrier.

When does the S5 mini become dead as far as OS upgrades or security updates?

I am curious. I assumed lollipop was going to be the last one I would see, since the phone is over 2 years old. I love Android 6.0.2 now. I am curious how long I might expect to keep getting updates on the phone? I cannot find any "end of life" lists for the S5 mini so I am unsure.
Also, what would a worthy successor to the S5 mini be to be more up to date?

Depending on the range of the smartphone, the manufacturers give support of about 2 years, after that they are totally forgotten (except samsung, they forget the mid-range smartphones at 4 months LOL)

Thanks. I thought it was weird when I saw an update come up for a whole new OS... I love my S5 mini again, although I am looking for an upgrade to save for that's similar size but better than what I have in the S5 mini. Closest I can figure is A3 2017 but not sure.
For now, till I get more info I will enjoy my renewed S5 mini with, now, epic battery life in comparison.

Doze works very well in the s5 mini, is very good no doubt, personally I recommend using some custom rom, do not have samsung applications and are extremely fast, also have new versions of android (7.1.1 in this case) Of course they are in beta and contain bugs, but they are still very good

Well a while back I tried to get a standard rom that was not from DBT (my handset is german, from ebay and it was cheaper) but it would not boot up. So I had to re-flash stock DBT firmware to get it to work. I remember trying Cyanogen mod on my old S4 mini but the compass did not work and a few other things. I cannot use a rom if basic phone features don't work. But with my experience of trying a different rom on my S5 mini, I bet custom roms would not work. I did get it rooted a couple times though although now I stick with unrooted so more standard apps work.

That is very strange, since the custom rom of this forum work very well for the variants F / M / Y, since they are the same device but dedicated to different markets (M in my case since I am in South America), The problem lies in the H variant, since it assembles a totally different processor and it is difficult to compile some custom rom for that variant, you should try some, I personally recommend this rom, very very good, you still have to polish one or another detail, But can be used daily

Thanks. I have bookmarked it. Although it seems every rom I have seen has issues for some reason. Whether in my experience with Cyanogen where the compass stops working and something else which I care about, or that one and tethering and hotspot etc. I just have been kind of burned from the excitement of my first custom rom failing me on the feature front and seeing big known issues with other custom ones I have seen. Not to mention I would want to avoid having some apps refuse to work like my banking app, google apps or Android Pay etc. But I have bookmarked it though in case because it seems cyanogen mod's site has gone down, which is not a good sign and any way they never supported S5 mini which was depressing. Are there any roms that are feature-perfect with no show stoppers on the S5 mini?

I do not understand exactly what you mean, but if the question is, if custom roms may or may not work in one country or another, as far as I know, they would have to work without any problem, as long as the bootloader is unlocked , A common problem is the loss of line, ie the device can not communicate with the operator, therefore no calls or sms, but that is solved using odin and flashing the baseband (there is also a post In this forum on that)
Firmware has various ones you can get based on the carrier or country or what ever. My phone needs me to download the DBT firmware. I tried choosing one someone recommended which was also a stock genuine rom for my phone but not DBT, it was one that they said was as close to raw Android possible. I flashed it and it would not boot. They gave me reasons and all kinds of complex more indepth things I would have to do all kinds of hacky piecemeal techniques to get the other rom to work. I was not interested, using odin, selecting a file and waiting is nerve racking enough for me without having to go 3 levels more complex than that. So the only thing I could do was flash the DBT version back on the phone and it worked again.
DBT is a very clean firmware in regard to branding so no need to switch to anything else, it has only 3 apps which can be uninstalled without rooting.
As for the updates I believe that Marshmallow is the final official update we're getting, there could be a couple security patch updates though. Like many users I was pleasantly surprised that we're getting 6.0.1 considering that we're talking about a 3 year old midrange Samsung which in smartphone years is a long time.

Thanks.
I certainly was shocked when I saw 6.0.1 or Marshmallow or what ever it said on the screenshot. Jaw dropped with excitement.
I don't know how guys can use Samsung's BS. KitKat, Lolipop or Marshmallow they all run poorly on my mini, and there's a lot of annoying slowdowns even when just scrolling twitter.

I highly recommend you factory reset your device. Prior to this Marshmallow update my phone was a constipated donkey. Just slow and sluggish as hell even doing the most basic of things. I got the Marshmallow update and it did feel a lot better. I factory reset and put my crucial apps back on and my phone is perfect again.
I would really like to see video showing how quick it is. Because I believe it will still be slower than Slim6.
And when scrolling is slow I get triggered as f.

I have no idea what Slim6 is. What I do know is I was getting ready to throw my phone in the trash and save up for a new phone, till I got the Marshmallow update. Now my phone feels like a brand spanking new upgrade after the crap experience I have been having. Snappy, responsive, everything is working well. Perfect. Pshhh not to mention idle battery life has vastly improved.
It's custom rom for F variant of S5 mini. Battery was never a problem for me on marshmallow from Samsung though.
