Wife has the H/K M8, completely stock and she took the MM update last week. Ever since her contacts have been messed up. Her contacts are correct if she logs into a PC, but she has a lot of contacts on her phone now that she says she already deleted (confirmed at least 1 or 2 weren't there on PC) or are just showing as the phone number (on PC the # is associated with the correct person). I thought maybe deselecting and reselecting Contacts under Accounts and Sync would do it, but she said all she has the option for is People Details so guessing it moved. Is there a fix for this, short of going in to the store?

So the title basically sums it up.
I was doing the usual flashing and modding
and everything went well except, well...
I forgot to backup contacts.
It's not actually my phone but my dad's and now his
700 contacts are deleted and now he wants to kill me
Is there anyway possible way to get the contacts back.
None of them are saved on his SIM Card and there are no backups of the contacts at all.
Am I screwed?
Unless you have a back up or they are in sim (wich you they aren't) you are SOL.
Why werent they saved to his google account ??? Thats the easiest method as soon as you login to google bam all contacts calender events everything is right back to the way tthey were...

Forgot about that one. Regardless requires you to back up somewhere.
Hello i am quite new to this, i looked around on the forum with no prevail to my problem although there was a similar post but that had to do with a Gmail contacts list.
First of all, i rooted my Droid 4 phone just earlier today and found this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1541297
I proceeded to freeze all of the apps listed aside from Facebook Authenticator. After i had done so i went to check to make sure my contacts list wasn't going to crash on me and found myself looking at an empty contacts list; except for a few that i had entered manually when i received the phone. I was guessing that it had something to do with freezing backup assistant and its other features so i un-froze them. Went in to backup assistant and synced my contacts when it said clearly that i had 80 some contacts backed up and when the sync was done, nothing had been added. I am going to try a re-boot right now but if anyone has any suggestions please let me know!

no prevail yet again...
i have restarted my phone, defrosted all of the apps i froze at the start and STILL am missing all of my contacts...in the phone app>recent, everyones name was there but i tapped on one and now they are all unknown. also i tried to sync back my contacts using backup assistant but now my backup assistant account has 0 contacts. why on earth would the sync delete the contacts. no single person would ever do that.
sorry for ranting and not capitalizing, i am highly pissed at me, myself, and i.
Also, when i try to sync my facebook contacts, the phone syncs but yet again, no contacts show up. someone please help me out =/ i will keep trying myself though.
Go to your contacts-menu- display options... and check to see what is being displayed or not displayed...

thank you for the reply but i fixed it. it must have been the fact that i froze backup assistant and when i did it threw all of my contacts in the trash on the verizon website for backup assistant so this thread can be closed as solved?
Thanks again,

My phone:
VZN DE Moto x
4.2.2 after upgrade to 4.5 then downgrade to 4.2.2
Unlocked boot loader
Rooted
OLD: I've had this issue since my DE came or of the box and sync'd with activesync the first time. Although I have the proper contacts displayed and they are marked to sync my contacts from my corporate email don't display in my people app. If I use touchdown they sync and display perfectly fine. All my Google contacts sync without any issue. They didn't work on 4.2.2 as phone was shipped nor after official 4.4 OTA update and not after root and revert back to 4.2.2. I've consulted with our IT&S folks and they tell me the servers are current and don't have any reports from others with issue like this. Anyone have any clue what might be the issue?
NEW: I was out playing with kids left my phone in to charge. When I checked it next it was wiped. I still had root however and the 4.4 update was in the process of downloading. I let it finish, froze motoOTA and delete the cache update file to prevent install. Anyone ever had the issue of a spontaneous wipe?

So.... I stated my problem incorrectly. I realized my corp contacts do sync they just aren't displayed.
I looked in the apps and see that there is 7 MB of data in contacts storage. That's about right for around 1900 contacts. Yeah it's a lot, I know I need to do some housekeeping but that's what a sales job will get you.
Anyway, I deleted all my gmail contacts and corp contacts thinking maybe a fresh reload would help. I only reloaded my corp contacts and while contacts storage data is back they aren't displayed.
I've tried removing and adding back my corp account to see if that would work but no dice.
I got touchdown installed and sure enough the corp contacts sync and display just fine but they still don't show up in the people app.
I have the appropriate "contacts to display" checked, our work servers haven't changed/updated since I was on my RAZR m (when I didn't have issue with contacts) it's all been since I got this DE moto x phone.
Where is the vcard or whatever the people app uses to display contacts? Does it need to be named something special?
Would the Motorola digital personalization app be causing any conflicts?
I've got contacts apk and odek.... should I?
Is there a log or something I could run and post for someone to review?
This is driving me up the wall...at my wit's end. anyone have any ideas?

Another strange action is if I export the contacts from the corp people app to storage (still nothing on the display) then import that same vcf file back to people all my contacts are there.

Ok I've done some digging and can't seem to find anything with my exact problem.
Yes I have looked up duplicated read only contacts BUT everyone seems to have this issue with contacts synced from another app. Mine is no.
Got this baby this past Sunday (found out that I can upgrade 7 days early so of course I did it. Love the phone and think I will be okay without root. Got Helium backup to backup my data. Only thing left is for them to add a Restart in the power menu then I'll be fine with no Root. OH and they need to get Lolipop out ASAP)
But ever since then I've been having this issue. I've been having new contacts made, same name as a contact I have, but with not info (most of the time. Sometimes it has their number in it). Now here is where it gets weird.
They are Google contacts that it says are saved under my Gmail. I go to Gmail, No duplicated contacts there, I try to delete, says they are read only and can only hide, AND it seems like the contacts that are getting duplicated are contacts that I seem to call most often. I have all other apps and their contact sync turned off so I know it's not an issue with them, and since they are saved under Gmail and when I turn off the local Phone contacts they are still there so I know they are not local saved/SIM contacts.
If anyone has any suggestions let me know. I felt like I had this issue loooooong ago with another phone but pretty sure it was back when Facebook synced its contacts and I had to link them.
I'm a savvy guy and know my way around Android.
Thanks
Ok well i ended up getting it myself.
For people with this issue:
Turn off google contact sync. Then go to apps in settings and then look for the contact storage app. Force stoo the act and clean all data. Check contacts to make sure its empty. Then enable google contacts sync.

Contacts in Android are stored in a database, and as they come from multiple sources (synced from Google, Facebook, Whatsapp, LinkedIn and copied from SIM or stored as "local phone" contacts...) it's easy to have multiple instances of same contact with different info or even duplicates. Contacts app let you "join" multiple contacts from different sources so they will appear joined in your contacts list, but they will still be stored inidividually in the database.
Anyway, there are multiple apps that let you manage your contacts at a deeper database level. With MiniContacts https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.brapeba.minicontacts you can see all raw contacts one by one showing its original account source (group). And you can delete all contacts from a source (i.e. those coming from LinkedIn, or Facebook) or choosing manually those you don't want. Notice that if you don't disable the syncronization with the source those deleted contacts will reappear again. So, first disable syncronization! If you want to delete the contacts permanently from everywhere instead of just from your Android database, go to the source (LinkedIn, Facebook...) and delete them there.
Hope it helps...

I could kiss you right now. I have been scouring the internet and downloading apps for hours trying to figure out how to fix "read only" and "can't be deleted" contacts on my second replacement dud Turbo 2. Duplicates galore, and they wouldn't go away. Thank you, thank you, thank you! No more Verizon Cloud - that really messed it up both times. Merry Christmas! :good:

The app Simpler Contacts can merge duplicate apps. I've used it on friends' phones to do that.
Of course, Simpler Contacts also would like you to keep using their app and even their backup service, and they have a Dialer app too. But you don't need all that. I just use Simpler Contacts once in a while to check for duplicate contacts.
But this solution above is good too.
I also used Simpler Contacts to export all contacts from a "local" account. Helped to friends do this when they switched from iPhone to Android and the carrier store exported all their iPhone apps to "local" phone account -- which is STUPID. All the contacts need to synced with Google.
Any ideas how to recover my contacts lost after updating my locked bootloader Moto X (AT&T)? It was not even rooted. I did nothing special within the update, but some contacts were lost fully. Some still have just WhatUp accounts (not phones). All rest is working like needed exept "system/applications update" within every reboot. I can't even return to 4.4.4 back or reflash 5.1 in order to check system without the bug. Can I recover and copy contacts on another Android phone? (my Google Autosync is switched on)
If your Sync is ON, you're safe!

If your Sync is On, your contacts should have been saved in your google account right?
You can log into your google account in any phone and get then there by Synching

Try my troubleshooting steps posted here if you use AT&T Address Book. Be sure to check online to see what contacts are saved on your account via your PC.
If you use Google Contacts then I would check on your PC and then go to Settings > Accounts > Google > Email > Contacts > UnCheck and then check the sync option. If you have over 1K contacts it may take a while to sync.

Thank you. I will try. David Schuster confirmed the issue with 5.1 for AT&T phones only https://plus.google.com/+DavidSchuster/posts/5qMzkiFGQQg

No problem. Any info you can give with your specific use case will be helpful. Certainly if you have any contacts on phone memory you should move to the cloud (Google Contacts) if you decide to reset or Clear Contact Storage App.

Dear Mark,
The issue was not solved. As I have found that I have never used AT&T Address book on this phone. Google sync was switched off as well (It's too late to switch it on now).
Any another ideas how to find lost contacts? Which application keeps contacts in case of non-registering into AT&T Address book app?

But if you log into Google Contacts and check, are your contacts in there? If they are then they should sync back down to the phone.
If not there, then they were 1 either never syncing before KitKat, were in AT&T Contacts or were only in phone's memory. If in AT&T Contacts then you should be able to log on to AT&T Addressbook and find the contacts and then disable and reenable app to resync to the phone. That would only work if you are an AT&T user and not if you were using AT&T phone on another network.
If contacts were in phone's memory then they should have been there after the upgrade to Lollipop. If you have reset the phone then the contacts wouldn't be restored after the reset as they were local and never in the cloud.
Any contacts on the SIM card?
