How many Kindle Fire and Nook owners bought the Nexus 7?

The Kindle Fire's lack of Bluetooth, GPS, hepatic feedback, compass, and camera have always been a disappointment, but it was easy to rationalize these missing features because of the price (except for the lack of Bluetooth, because that could have been implemented at no extra cost) When I saw the specifications for the Nexus 7 Tablet, I bought one immediately because it was everything that the Kindle isn't.

Coming from Nook Color. 7" is perfect size for me.

3 Fires in my household (wife and kids). I have the A100 and now will have the N7.

Nook Color running Mirage CM7.2 rom. I've enjoyed it but its just too slow for me for anything but reading. Ordering the Nexus 7 was a no brainer.

Bought my wife a nook tablet. Tricked it out as much as I could to make it a real tablet instead of a bn appliance. Bought the nexus for myself... very impatiently waiting

Selling KF, it was good, but now it will be just a paperweight with the n7.

I already sold my Kindle Fire, I will order a Nexus 7.

Most kindle fire owners won't know what the nexus 7" is & are probably loyal to amazon ecosystem. Now the geeks on the other hand are another story.

You could try listing it on the Singapore Craigslist.

Had a Nook Tablet (and previously a Color) but sold it when development of the 3.x kernel kinda ran into roadblocks and stalled.
In for 1 Nexus 7 8 gb, though. 7" makes a great portable video viewer & the price is right for an otg toy....

I have an iPad 64GB wifi+4G, I bought a Nook Tablet to see how I liked the 7" form factor, I ended up real liking the 7" size very much over my iPad but wanted a more standard Google experience. I was able to tweak the NT to where I was almost happy but ended up returning it when I heard about the ASUS ME370T that was going to come out with ICS 4.0. So I've been waiting for this tablet since January.
Why would I want this when I already have an iPad? My iPad cost me $900 including the "Smart Cover", and I have left it at restuarants a few times already, luckily returning to find it turned in @ the register. I am tired of worrying about something happening to my expensive primary computer. My iPad has become the only device I find myself using 95 percent of the time, & the other 5 percent I'm using it to control a PC using the LogMeIn App. I also found out with the NT that I really like a 7" device, as it is way more portable and much easier to hold. I've noticed that when I use my iPad I always prop it up on a surface & use it and rarely hold it in my hands. With the NT I found myself holding it more and using it in more positions than I'd ever used my iPad in. I am looking forward to getting my N7, just wish it still had microSD & HDMI like ASUS said back in January.
So when my N7 arrives it will be my portable computing device & my iPad will become my new desktop/home computer. Will work out nicely now that I can use Chrome on both have my tabs sync'd between the two.
Just a note, if they'd (Google & ASUS) have left the HDMI & microSD port in I could have hooked up my N7 to my monitor, keyboard & mouse, SDHC, and truly used it as my desktop as well & sold my iPad and completely converted over to the Google/Android ecosphere. But as Google has seen fit to remove these coveted ports, I will be retaining my iPad @ least until I can get my hands on a Microsoft Surface which I may use as my main computing device.

No one waiting for the KF2?

They'll be hard pressed to match the N7 on specs and price I think, plus this is a Nexus device

Looking at getting a 7" tablet. Google or Amazon

For Christmas I received $100 in Amazon gift cards. I have been playing with getting a tablet since the last generation Kindle. Now that I have $100 my wife is more open to me getting a tablet.
I have it down to the Kindle and Google Nexus. I know I can not get the Nexus from Amazon though.
I have been rooting phones for over a year and loading custom ROMs. I see for the Kindle I need root to get the play store like I have to root to put Amazon on my phone.
Kind of disappointed the Kindle does not have GPS.
Is there any other downfalls to the Kindle? I see its performance is not as good as the Nexus. Wondering if Custom ROMs might tweak some of that.

I've got a Nexus 7, had several original KF and my wife just got a KFHD.
If you are missing the GPS... and plan on doing roms and such I would stick with the Nexus 7 which is ready to go pretty much out of the box. Unlocking/rooting is trivial as a Nexus device.
If you are planning on using Amazon Prime videos etc.. that is not really an option on the Nexus 7 (no Prime Video apps).
Really depends on what you are going to do with it.
My wife wants movies, books etc... I use my Nexus 7 for business. I can do those other things, but don't normally have time to read or watch movies.

Thanks. I found the Nexus on Amazon so I went for it and got it. It should be fun to have.

I owned both and both are good tablets but I found myself keeping the Kindle. The Nexus is the better performer spec wise but the loud dual speakers, HDMI out, better screen and the wider bezel on the Kindle won me over.
BTW the performance difference really does go unnoticed unless you run a quadrant score.

I guess it's too late now, but... The Nexus 7s on Amazon are all being sold by third party retailers, with obscene markup.
Just from a glance, the cheapest one available right now is an 8GB model for $236. Google stopped selling the 8GB model in November, I think. Offering instead a 16GB model for $199. On Amazon, the 16GB model costs $250 or more. Google's Play Store offers a 32GB model for $250. On amazon, the 32 GB model costs $270, thus being actually the least offensive (to me), but still more than it should be.
When I was searching for a 7" tablet, I had $180 in Amazon gift cards... and those markups are a large part of why I picked up the KFHD (as well as the superior speakers, HDMI out, and Amazon Prime videos).
I really like this tablet. It's worth every cent; even more so, now that I've rooted it and put the Play store on it.
I hope you enjoy your Nexus 7, though.

Yes but with Amazon it is free shipping and no tax. I paid the $270. Google I had to pay both. I saved about $15 going through Amazon. I was kind of shocked.

Hmm... hadn't thought about the shipping (too spoiled by Prime, I guess), or the tax (since I live in a state with no sales tax). Guess that $20 "premium" wasn't so bad as I thought.
...Although, that still doesn't excuse the prices on the 8 and 16 GB models (imo). :S

I agree with the prices for the 8 and 16gb models are nuts. The only one that is right is the 32gig. I have to pay tax with Google because they bought Motorola and they have a ton of offices close to me.

I know you got the Nexus, but I will still answer.
I got the Kindle Fire 2 from work. It's awful. Terrible battery life, the kindle OS is crap, and no way to get android on it that I can see.
From looking it up, 4x the processing speed, a better resolution display, and an already android JB device....
And I can get 3g if I want.
I have no idea WHY anyone would get a kindle. Mine was free, and I love free stuff, and I will hack and use this thing to death. Honestly though, if the nexus was $300 and the Kindle was $200, i would STILL get the nexus, that however, is not the case. It's $160 for the kindle....and $200 for the nexus. That's only $40 for an infinitely better device!
NOW, if you talk about the Fire HD, still the Nexus. My above is no longer as relevant, but here is the rundown
Nexus
-quad core
-8hours battery (claims by google)
-55 grams lighter! (340g)
HD
-Dual Core
-11hours battery (claims by Amazon)
-55 grams heavier (395g)
Side notes that I cannot claim as fact, but from Amazons own websites I cannot find proof that it has either
-NFC
-GPS
Now, I'm not sure about you guys, but I don't plan on using GPS. HOWEVER, I will use NFC a lot when I get a phone or tablet. For the tablet I plan to have an NFC set next to my second media monitor and have it turn on my wifi and open a remote app I use. I will also have an NFC thing in my case in my bag that will turns wifi, bluetooth, and gps off, as well as silencing the tablet.
I just think the nexus has more bang for your buck. However, the Kindle HD DOES have more battery life, CAN be hacked to run JB (that's why I didn't include it as a downside for the HD, I assume being here you know how to root and ROM it) so you shouldn't miss out much from apps. However, if you use the kindle for the Prime services, then you won't have the Google services so...I suppose that's user preference but I personally cannot live without a custom ROM, I feel suffocated heh.
Anyways, enjoy my two cents! Hope it can help someone!

Kindle Fire 2- No, just, please don't. Do whatever you can for that extra $40 to get the nexus

If you are thinking of buying a new Kindle Fire, wait a month or two and there should be a new one. Otherwise, you can read reviews from Sept 2012.

Amazon is running a sale on the fire HD 7" - I ordered one last night and it was here when I woke up a little while ago.
I really like it so far, though all I have done was put a screen protector on it as soon as I opened it and turned it on/worked through setup.
The display is nice and crisp, the screen responsive.
I got it to take advantage of the stuff being amazon prime gives me - streaming video and so on while out and about, as I travel around the country for work. I generally don't want to lug my computer around where the tablet is nice and small.
Obviously here is the first place I come as i'd like to root and get the play store on to add my years of apps to it.
I've been with a variety of (at the time) high end android devices now, so at first blush in the hour i've owned it as my own, and not some display model, i'm very satisfied for the price. ($159 free shipping, direct from amazon.)

It's nice how well it works with the amazon services, it was easy to manage my kindle account on the amazon site, and transfer the changes to the kindle.
It's also nice that they have my 'free app of the day' apps from the amazon app store going all the way back to 2011, so win there.
It's snappy and responsive, and I didn't know it had bluetooth - honestly didn't know much about it before pulling the trigger on purchase. I figured best case would be a halfway decent viewing device for amazon prime media.
Turns out this little tablet is a lot better then I thought it would be. Even if I wasn't going to root it and break out of the amazon cage the presentation of it all and what it was designed to do is really well done.

Is the Fire 7 worth it?

I have a few tablets and looking for one for my 3 year old. A good bit of reviews on Amazon said this tablet is super slow and glitches to where its not usable, but since its Amazon reviews its hard to trust them. Is this tablet decent speed wise? I have a Tab 3 7 and after debloating the speed was day and night. Thanks for any responses.

- debloating makes a significant difference if retaining FireOS (you'll need root to do the job right)
- installing a custom rom (several solid choices) yields a nibble/responsive tablet on par with far pricier options
- display resolution makes device less than ideal for extensive text based work; better than most in price range for video, graphics, etc
- be aware of audio glitches in games with when running a custom rom
- parental controls in FireOS top those of most custom roms
- durable but not indestructible tablet; might consider "kids" edition which comes with more generous physical protection and warranty but is otherwise identical

If the Fire 7 is for a small child, I would just keep the Fire OS. It has great lockdown features for its children mode and a lot of free apps for children in the Amazon store. This is the same exact model that Amazon sells for $100 as a child's tablet. That one also includes a rugged child case and replacement insurance. You can get a refurbished one of these Fire 7 tablets for about $28 currently. I got one July 1 and it had 1 or 2 dead pixels that only show on a completely black screen. On any other screen the dead pixels don't show. For a small child that might easily break the tablet $28 is better than $50 or $100. Rugged shock resistant childrens tablet cases are $10 or $15 for this model. I bought the most recent one for my 3 year old niece.
To find the refurbished Fire 7 2015 tablets, go to the regular Fire 7 listing and look down the page a couple of paragraphs. The refurbished prices will be listed in smaller print than the $49 price.
Another way to find them is from the top of the Amazon title page select "TODAY'S DEALS" then select "OPEN BOX & USED". This will take you to the Amazon Warehouse Deals dept. It's an Amazon department that sells refurbished, open box, returns, one-of-a-kind, etc products. All the products usually have an original warranty, can be returned and are eligible for Prime Shipping. While in the "Warehouse Deals" department, search for "Fire 7 tablet" and you will get a listing of the refurbished ones.

I'm basically looking for a tablet with a micro SD slot so I an load movies and shows on it, watch Netflix, and play some of the silly toddler apps. My tab 3 7 has held up good with my kids in its Otterbox.

Catching Up with the Amazon Fire...

I've been using XDA for a few years now to mod my many other Android devices, but today; was talking to wife and she isn't happy with her Amazon Fire tablet as she says it's too slow and is sick of all the ads. It's a 7" 5th Generation running 5.6.0.1 and all I've done to it in the past is install Google Play on it.
What would be my best option / ROM to load which would basically turn it into a simple yet stable Android device? I looked at LineageOS & a couple of others in this forum, but unsure which is the most stable - and - if it's even possible to install any of them on a 5.6.0.1 device. I planned to test out a couple as I thought I had rooted when installing Google Play long ago so grabbed TWRP and installed FlashFire - but when launching FlashFire I was told it was not rooted.
What would you suggest be the way to go to achieve this goal? Thanks!

Unfortunately, allowing FireOS to update beyond 5.3.2.0 permanently removed the ability to root and/or install custom ROMs. It's FireOS in all it's glory from this point forward. There is a convoluted way to remove some of the Amazon bloat but you probably don't want to go there as it's not for the faint of heart. Most who travel that route have less than satisfactory outcomes. 5th/7th gen Fire 7 devices are getting long in the tooth and are decidedly underpowered for the tasks Amazon demands of it. Your better half is probably looking a new device if she is significantly dissatisfied.

Some folks over in the HD 8/10 forum seem to be making headway with achieving root, some of which might apply to the Fire 7.
However, I do have to agree the 5th gen Fire 7 I have is barely a functional tablet at this point with the stock ROM.

HD 10 has a different underlying architecture utilizing different kernel and ROM components exposing new vulnerabilities that are being exploited. Amazon will undoubtedly close those as do all manufactures. In contrast HD 8 uses the same architecture as the Fire 7. Realizing root on that device is highly unlikely.
It will be interest to see what Amazon does with the next hardware refresh. Me thinks the Fire 7 will be gone with either an adjustment on the HD 8 price point or the addition of some other gizmo to fill the gap.

From what it looks like so far, it looks like the current progress for the Fire HD 8 is less so "root" and more like "uncovering hidden features we never knew we could use on Fire OS".
I do notice the Fire HD 8/HD 10 have gotten more of the spotlight recently. The Fire 7 (even the 2017 version) just isn't the $50 bargain it was two years ago. The HD 8 2017 has already dropped down to only $80 new.
Less people are buying the 7" tablet now, because it almost seems "too cheap". I do wonder what the Fire tablet lineup will be next year.

You could argue that the 8" it better value for money (I don't really know, but maybe) but for me the 7" form-factor is just perfect for a "everyday carry device".
The market for 7" tablet is not so big, you could get a Lenovo for about 80 Euro or a Samsung for about 120, that's about it if you want to avoid chinese no-names.
So it is by far the cheapest option and debloated and equipped with Google Playstore it is quite a nice device and I expect Amazon to drop the 7" line, so get it while you can...

A gently used HDX is a far better device for similar coin. Far superior hardware and capable of running a dozen+ custom ROMs ranging from KitKat to Nougat (soon Oreo). I do enjoy my rooted 5th gen Fire for media streaming playback.
