The Kindle Fire's lack of Bluetooth, GPS, hepatic feedback, compass, and camera have always been a disappointment, but it was easy to rationalize these missing features because of the price (except for the lack of Bluetooth, because that could have been implemented at no extra cost) When I saw the specifications for the Nexus 7 Tablet, I bought one immediately because it was everything that the Kindle isn't.

Selling KF, it was good, but now it will be just a paperweight with the n7.
I already sold my Kindle Fire, I will order a Nexus 7.
Most kindle fire owners won't know what the nexus 7" is & are probably loyal to amazon ecosystem. Now the geeks on the other hand are another story.

You could try listing it on the Singapore Craigslist.
Had a Nook Tablet (and previously a Color) but sold it when development of the 3.x kernel kinda ran into roadblocks and stalled.
In for 1 Nexus 7 8 gb, though. 7" makes a great portable video viewer & the price is right for an otg toy....
I have an iPad 64GB wifi+4G, I bought a Nook Tablet to see how I liked the 7" form factor, I ended up real liking the 7" size very much over my iPad but wanted a more standard Google experience. I was able to tweak the NT to where I was almost happy but ended up returning it when I heard about the ASUS ME370T that was going to come out with ICS 4.0. So I've been waiting for this tablet since January.
Why would I want this when I already have an iPad? My iPad cost me $900 including the "Smart Cover", and I have left it at restuarants a few times already, luckily returning to find it turned in @ the register. I am tired of worrying about something happening to my expensive primary computer. My iPad has become the only device I find myself using 95 percent of the time, & the other 5 percent I'm using it to control a PC using the LogMeIn App. I also found out with the NT that I really like a 7" device, as it is way more portable and much easier to hold. I've noticed that when I use my iPad I always prop it up on a surface & use it and rarely hold it in my hands. With the NT I found myself holding it more and using it in more positions than I'd ever used my iPad in. I am looking forward to getting my N7, just wish it still had microSD & HDMI like ASUS said back in January.
So when my N7 arrives it will be my portable computing device & my iPad will become my new desktop/home computer. Will work out nicely now that I can use Chrome on both have my tabs sync'd between the two.
Just a note, if they'd (Google & ASUS) have left the HDMI & microSD port in I could have hooked up my N7 to my monitor, keyboard & mouse, SDHC, and truly used it as my desktop as well & sold my iPad and completely converted over to the Google/Android ecosphere. But as Google has seen fit to remove these coveted ports, I will be retaining my iPad @ least until I can get my hands on a Microsoft Surface which I may use as my main computing device.

Hi everyone. I have an offer for someone to buy my kindle fire hd. If I did sell it I would be picking up a chrome book. I type a lot on forums and use within at work. I am thinking it might be better for web browsing. What are your opinions? I really like my fire hd and I would miss the touch screen along with the many games. I don't know what should do so I am looking for suggestions. It is a pain to type on the fire hd, I really wish you could install swiftkey keyboard as the predictive typing is terrible on the kindle. Once again just shoot me your thoughts, this isn't a one is better than the other, I just want to make an educated decision.

If you really like having the touch screen and still want the option of having a better way to type, you should look into the Asus Transformer series tablet. You can buy a custom made keyboard dock that doubles the battery life and adds more ports(usb, full size sd I think). Its not one of those cheap keyboards either, its made by Asus for the device(super thin, very portable) hence the name Transformer, best of both worlds touchscreen tablet or mini laptop. It is very easy to attach and detach. Also Asus is awesome about updating their software, usually one of the first tablets to get new android updates.
This device would fit every need you mention above. You can get the TF300 series w/ keyboard dock for under 500. If you want best of the best the TF700 w/ dock is about 620-650, screen resolution is amazing something like 1920x1200.
Hi,I would love to get the asus but price is 2x what I am willing or able to spend right now. Before I bought the first fire, the transformer prime was what I wanted. Where I am right now, about 250 would be my Max budget. I am offered 200 for my fire hd with my case and the remaining 10 months on my best buy warranty for accidental coverage. So the chrome book would only be an additional 50 bucks. That's about all I can do right now as money is a bit tight. Thanks for the suggestion though,it was a great one.

Chrome books are a fair spec on paper but the screen is horrible. Not IPS... matt and low viewing angles.
How do you know the screen is horrible? Do you own one? Is the screen as nice as the kindle hd..... No. But it's not horrible, I have used one and the screen still appears high Def. Regarding viewing angles, I sit in front of my computer not off to the side so that's a non issue. Some people prefer the matte screen over the gloss, I do.
Thanks for the help guys.

Nexus 10.. and get a blue tooth keyboard if you need to type a lot. It was debuted online on 10/29. Not sure of the release date yet. It's made by Samsung, not Asus this time around.
The Asus transformer is not a bad choice. With the dock, it gets turned into an android netbook of sorts. Not to mention it's detachable and you can just carry the tablet portion around if you want. Though my husband says that it feels awkward on the dock, he hardly every uses it. Possibly only with the 1st gen, never tried the 2nd.
Or you can be adventurous and get the Microsoft surface running full windows 8 Not light on the pocket book though.
That's nice but budget is 250. Choices are slim.
Sent from my Sony Xperia Ion using Tapatalk 2.
Perhaps the N7 then. You can install keyboards to your hearts content without jumping through hoops. Plus get a BT keyboard. The 16 GB is now $199 and the 32 is $249.
Otherwise you can take a look at pre-owned transformers, but I'd take the N7 any day.. I love the 7" size.

It's a new OS. From my knowledge, it doesn't run Android, it runs chrome OS. It can go either way and it would be in early development in comparison to Android. Someone's gotta test it though

I have used one in the flesh for about 20 minutes. I don't own one because I did not like the screen quality.
Its not just me... from Anandtech
"The new Chromebook's display is still a fairly mediocre TN panel, but for anyone used to the majority of low cost PC notebooks over the past few years it's really not any different. The 16:9 display measures 11.6 inches along the diagonal with a 1366 x 768 resolution.
Viewing angles are pretty bad. Max brightness tops out at 233 nits, although contrast ratio is better than a lot of low cost notebooks. The low max brightness means that outdoor use will be an issue, generally speaking for really bright sunlight you'll need something closer to 500 nits to be usable."
look, the screen is fair for the money - but not for me.
---------- Post added at 06:53 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:48 PM ----------
BTW - I am quite sensitive to the quality of screens. So others may well have a more positive perspective.
The KF HD screen rocks though ! Better than the ipad mini and N7 ...
thanks deagle. I ordered 2 of them but they are out of stock. I am gonna hold onto my kindle hd until I test out the chrome book for a little while. The other one is a Christmas present from my sister and I for my parents who are not computer savvy at all. I figure this will be easier than a windows Pc would be for someone who never owned a computer. Thanks again

I think the chromebooks are great and especially since they are that cheap. The only thing that turns me off is that there is no internal storage, you have to access all your files from google drive. Not a bad thing if you are always near wi-fi or you have the 3G version($450 though).
Have you thought about just getting a bluetooth keyboard for the kindle, i'm sure there is one out there that is compatible.
By the way I own a KFHD and two Nexus 7's. I don't agree with everyone that says the build quality on the Nexus is bad, feels solid and one of them has been dropped at least 10 times w/ no damage, screen has no light bleed and great color, a powerhouse when it comes to multitasking, and all jacks(usb, headphone) are very tight.
That being said the KFHD has an even better screen w/ richer color, 10x's better audio, hdmi port, and better overall handling feel.
I think the thin client/cloud model has a future... and I have been tempted... and would have pressed the "go" button but the 3G ones were not available... and I don't like the screen too much (but then again, I like IPS and glossy).
I am selling my iPad that I regret buying. I want something else. I'm between the kindle fire HD 8.9 and the galaxy tab 2 10.1 are there good reasons to get this over the galaxy? I see the specs difference. But I'm still undecided. Any help would be appreciated.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA
Its a big "it depends"
If you're a prime member, that's a huge + for the kfhd
Its much easier to have a normal android experience on the tab2, but the specs are a lot lower. If you're willing to deal with rooting to get play on the KFHD and dodging amazons updates that break root the KFHD is better device. Or if you don't care about the full android experience and just want to consume media, the KFHD is great. I think only you can answer how important some of this stuff is to you.
Tab2 wouldn't be my first choice unless you got one of those crazy black friday deals on it for a 10" tablet in that price range though. I'd be more likely to compare the tf300t. Much better SOC and cheaper.
Is the kindle that much faster and is the display really look better? I like the idea of being able to expand the storage on the g-tab and I own the s2 and I love it. Whatever I get will be rooted almost as soon as I take it out of the box. Its what I do so that doesn't matter.

I don't like the iPad. The os is so limited. Everything is so slow. And programs crash all the time. The crashing may have been because I jail broke it but either way it just sucked. I prefer android.

Was it an ipad 1? IMO the ipad 3 i have is worlds above the kindle fire HD, except for the price. The kindle is going to be even more limited and slow than an ipad 2-4. Samsung has been known to not updating their software so i'd recommend a nexus tablet if you want to go android.
I returned my kindle. Right now i have a nexus 7 and an Ipad 3. The ipad 3 works so good it's kinda boring, the nexus is completely open and there are alot of mods you can do to it. At this point i would not recommend a kindle unless you really like the amazon interface. CM10 looks like it's coming soon, but there will be lots of bugs, and you have to wait.
Maybe not exactly the info you're looking for, but here's my experience with the various manufacturers..
My current round up of devices include:
1. NookTablet
2. NookTouch
3. Moto Xoom (gave to Dad, but I still maintain)
4. Sammy Galaxy Tab 2 7"
5. Asus/Google Nexus 7
6. Kindle Fire 8.9 (just got this week; they had a $50 off deal one day)
7. Sammy Note I (phone)
4,5, and 6 are the only "current" models; all the other have newer versions.
They all have their pro and cons...here's my opinion on some of them.
Overall, the Nexus 7 is the winner.
If you're looking to run custom roms, the N7 has the widest selection and (more importantly) most active development community.
It also has the fastest proc of the bunch.
Its one real drawback, as you and others mentioned, is that it does not have expandable memory.
The Gtab2/7"..the 4 things it has over the N7:
1. Rear camera
2. Expandable storage
3. I/R blaster
4. A lot cheaper (I've seen refurbs on woot! twice now)
It also has a good selection of custom roms, but the dev community isn't as active as the N7...and that's only going to get worse as time goes on.
It is noticeably slower than the N7!
If you run any rom not based off of Samsung's rom, you lose the I/R blaster.
It's not that much of a loss because the available I/R remote control software sucks.
I've used the rear (and front camera) not more than a handful of times.
As for the Nook:
I would only recommend a Nook if you happen to frequent B&N stores often. Or you have already purchased e-books/magazines through them.
Their stock rom allows you to read any book while in store.
Their "Nook Kids" is available as an app for iOS, but not available for any Android devices except their own Nooks.
From my experience their Kids apps are nothing more than a larger selection of kids books, and they allow you to record yourself while reading the book.
I've run custom roms on it and ended putting the stock rom back on (rooted and Google Play installed of course)
As for the Kindle:
I would recommend if you have already purchased e-books/magazines through Amazon and/or have an Amazon Prime account.
Amazon (AFAIK) doesn't allow you to stream any video through android devices except their own Kindle Fires.
So as a Prime member, I was able to watch Fringe for the first time last night (a title not available on NetFlix).
You can also "check out" a lot of books without purchasing them.
I did root and get the Google Play store installed on this too.
I most likely won't be installing any custom roms on it.
Not because I like the Amazon UI or anything...but simpy because:
With both the Nook and the Kindle, you get value added services (like being able to read books in store and streaming content not available on other devices/roms)
So for me personally, I'm a big Amazon user, and am digging my 8.9 and the Prime features.
If I was looking for best specs and most open, I'd probably get an Nexus 10
Geekybiker said it best: " I think only you can answer how important some of this stuff is to you. "
I own a GT 2 7, and theres a catch about the SD memory expansion and is that you cant install applications or application data on the SD; not at least on stock rom; the expansion its only useful for media (music, movies, docs, book, etc..) not for apps.
Regards.
It all depends on the features you want now, and or later.
If you like The Fire HD, it has amazing dual speakers and is a great multimedia device, but is limited at the moment due to the Amazon ecosystem. But both the 8.9" and 7" variants, are having custom roms being developed for them, because the bootloaders have been cracked. So if your willing to wait for the goodies, then go with the Kindle Fire HD.
If you want something with more of a all around Android Experience now go with the Galaxy Tab. In my overall Opinion if it maters, pick the Kindle Fire HD either model size.
I ended up ordering the gtab 2 10.1 I want the expandable storage for movies and pics. 16gb is fine for The rest. Thanks to everyone for their input.

For Christmas I received $100 in Amazon gift cards. I have been playing with getting a tablet since the last generation Kindle. Now that I have $100 my wife is more open to me getting a tablet.
I have it down to the Kindle and Google Nexus. I know I can not get the Nexus from Amazon though.
I have been rooting phones for over a year and loading custom ROMs. I see for the Kindle I need root to get the play store like I have to root to put Amazon on my phone.
Kind of disappointed the Kindle does not have GPS.
Is there any other downfalls to the Kindle? I see its performance is not as good as the Nexus. Wondering if Custom ROMs might tweak some of that.
Thanks for your help.

I've got a Nexus 7, had several original KF and my wife just got a KFHD.
If you are missing the GPS... and plan on doing roms and such I would stick with the Nexus 7 which is ready to go pretty much out of the box. Unlocking/rooting is trivial as a Nexus device.
If you are planning on using Amazon Prime videos etc.. that is not really an option on the Nexus 7 (no Prime Video apps).
Really depends on what you are going to do with it.
My wife wants movies, books etc... I use my Nexus 7 for business. I can do those other things, but don't normally have time to read or watch movies.
Thanks. I found the Nexus on Amazon so I went for it and got it. It should be fun to have.
I owned both and both are good tablets but I found myself keeping the Kindle. The Nexus is the better performer spec wise but the loud dual speakers, HDMI out, better screen and the wider bezel on the Kindle won me over.
BTW the performance difference really does go unnoticed unless you run a quadrant score.

I guess it's too late now, but... The Nexus 7s on Amazon are all being sold by third party retailers, with obscene markup.
Just from a glance, the cheapest one available right now is an 8GB model for $236. Google stopped selling the 8GB model in November, I think. Offering instead a 16GB model for $199. On Amazon, the 16GB model costs $250 or more. Google's Play Store offers a 32GB model for $250. On amazon, the 32 GB model costs $270, thus being actually the least offensive (to me), but still more than it should be.
When I was searching for a 7" tablet, I had $180 in Amazon gift cards... and those markups are a large part of why I picked up the KFHD (as well as the superior speakers, HDMI out, and Amazon Prime videos).
I really like this tablet. It's worth every cent; even more so, now that I've rooted it and put the Play store on it.
I hope you enjoy your Nexus 7, though.
Yes but with Amazon it is free shipping and no tax. I paid the $270. Google I had to pay both. I saved about $15 going through Amazon. I was kind of shocked.

Hmm... hadn't thought about the shipping (too spoiled by Prime, I guess), or the tax (since I live in a state with no sales tax). Guess that $20 "premium" wasn't so bad as I thought.
...Although, that still doesn't excuse the prices on the 8 and 16 GB models (imo). :S
I agree with the prices for the 8 and 16gb models are nuts. The only one that is right is the 32gig. I have to pay tax with Google because they bought Motorola and they have a ton of offices close to me.
I know you got the Nexus, but I will still answer.
I got the Kindle Fire 2 from work. It's awful. Terrible battery life, the kindle OS is crap, and no way to get android on it that I can see.
From looking it up, 4x the processing speed, a better resolution display, and an already android JB device....
And I can get 3g if I want.
I have no idea WHY anyone would get a kindle. Mine was free, and I love free stuff, and I will hack and use this thing to death. Honestly though, if the nexus was $300 and the Kindle was $200, i would STILL get the nexus, that however, is not the case. It's $160 for the kindle....and $200 for the nexus. That's only $40 for an infinitely better device!
NOW, if you talk about the Fire HD, still the Nexus. My above is no longer as relevant, but here is the rundown
Nexus
-quad core
-8hours battery (claims by google)
-55 grams lighter! (340g)
HD
-Dual Core
-11hours battery (claims by Amazon)
-55 grams heavier (395g)
Side notes that I cannot claim as fact, but from Amazons own websites I cannot find proof that it has either
-NFC
-GPS
Now, I'm not sure about you guys, but I don't plan on using GPS. HOWEVER, I will use NFC a lot when I get a phone or tablet. For the tablet I plan to have an NFC set next to my second media monitor and have it turn on my wifi and open a remote app I use. I will also have an NFC thing in my case in my bag that will turns wifi, bluetooth, and gps off, as well as silencing the tablet.
I just think the nexus has more bang for your buck. However, the Kindle HD DOES have more battery life, CAN be hacked to run JB (that's why I didn't include it as a downside for the HD, I assume being here you know how to root and ROM it) so you shouldn't miss out much from apps. However, if you use the kindle for the Prime services, then you won't have the Google services so...I suppose that's user preference but I personally cannot live without a custom ROM, I feel suffocated heh.
Anyways, enjoy my two cents! Hope it can help someone!
TL;DR
Nexus- Yes, more for money
Kindle Fire HD- Yes, more battery, kindle services.
Kindle Fire 2- No, just, please don't. Do whatever you can for that extra $40 to get the nexus
I'm looking into purchasing a Nook HD+ tablet. I've played with it in store and it seems like a great buy, especially for the price. I'm a college student and would be using it mostly to view textbooks, take notes, and light game/movie usage. I'm looking for an under $200 tablet and I think the size is perfect (I'm not a fan of 7" tablets). Overall it seems almost too good to be true.
The reviews are mostly positive from what I've seen, but I'm really curious on the longevity of the tablet.
How long have you had yours, how do you feel about it/was it worth buying, and how well is it running after how long you've had it?
Thanks!

Longevity seems pretty good my wife's is a year old no issues still working great. My first one lasted about 7 months and then it lost a fight with a flight of concrete and steel stairs, any tablet would have failed believe me it was almost 20 feet of bouncing. My second one is a refurbished unit I have had it for about 6 months no idea how old it really is and it is working great still.
As far as light gaming and movie viewing it is awesome. I have the hdmi plug and use it to stream movies all the time. I read on it all the time I can't imaging you having an issue with text books as I read books, magazines, and comics all the time with no issues. There are faster devices out there but not at the same price.

Thanks for the prompt and helpful response! Have you noticed any sort of "lagginess" when you don't completely end a program (pull up the active program bar and swipe them away)? I was playing with one at Target and it was very laggy, but when I cleared out the dozens of apps that were currently open, it seemed to run more smoothly. Granted this thing has probably been abused for however long it's been on the display case and by many people, but I was just curious if you've had any sort of problem like this.
If you expect the same performance as an iPad you will be disappointed. It is about 90% in speed and polish for less than a third the price. I don't have much lag but I keep all my stuff (movies, books, music...) on the external card and I think this eliminates 90% of the lag others see.

Lag is normal for this tablet due to chipset. If you're willing to root, lagfix application fixes the issue by using trim. I run the latest cyanogenmod on my tablet and I love it. I read comics on it daily! Rooting, changing from stock rom to cyanogenmod 4.4 and lagfix, if you have the appropriate chipset makes this tablet a lovable beast of a beauty. I use it for word processing with a Bluetooth keyboard as well. Had it for 9 months and I love it. Would only stop using it for a nexus 10 level screen with an intense graphic processor and expandable storage. But honestly not looking to spend $600 for a tablet, so this is my go to device. I have a nexus 7 2012 that I honestly use solely to read novels and play a few Tegra processor based games. I like the 7 inch for reading novels, but use my Nook hd+ for everything else!

Have had mine for about a year. I rooted and flashed a custom ROM immediately. It is an OK tablet for average use with some lag. A good deal at the price but far from being a top product on the market

Thank you for all of your responses! To go along with my original question, how is the responsiveness to using a stylus for notes? Someone was telling me they didn't care for the ability to write on it, but they didn't provide much more detail than that. What are your thoughts? Especially with google play compatability, I'd think there are some good note taking apps (recommendations possibly?). I'd mostly be taking notes on top of PDF versions of slides my professors put out. Thanks again!
Using a stylus is not great at least the one I tried. My Note 2 is much better but then again that was built to use a stylus. Typing is very doable on it I do that in meetings all the time.

I will echo what the previous post said. Not that great with a stylus but as far as bang for your buck goes you can't beat this thing.

Does that depend on the app as well or just not good in general? Even with a pointier stylus than one of those wider ballpoints?
I only tried the one it is one of those freebies Amazon gives out with other things. I actually got it free with a case for a tablet I gave to my daughter. Works ok for general navigation. My mother in law uses the same type for everything on her nook she doesn't like using her finger but she doesn't do any type of note taking just reading and light game playing.

I have a Nook HD+ running CM11 and an LG G Pad 8.3 GPE. The former has an 8.9" screen but is sluggish even with trim, and the latter has an 8.3" screen and is silky smooth. As of last week the G Pad GPE is $225, so it's only a bit more than the HD+ (assuming it's still $180). I use the HD+ to read comics and the G Pad for everything else. My $0.02 on the HD+ and something similar.

Did you get the G Pad on sale? I'm seeing it from $279 online (best buy). I'm nearly positive I'm going to go with the HD+ though. I've been doing app research and I think I've found apps that'll fit my need on it and I don't need it to be super powered.
I did hear from a different forum somebody talking about being able to buy it, play with it during the return period, and then returning it if i don't like it. Is this true? Where would allow that? I would have thought that once it's opened, it can't be returned.
Barnes and Noble and Amazon both have really good return policies. Just double check when you buy it.

I've had mine for a year now and I'm fairly happy with it. Like some, I rooted and put CM on immediately. Performance is okay, if laggy at times, but the 1920x1280 screen is great.

Thank you for all of the help you've provided. I appreciate it greatly. I was talking with a colleague of mine about this and he brought up a good point about B&N getting out of the tablet game. Will there still be support/will I notice they even got out of the game? He was saying to watch out for it to soon become obsolete and be careful of hopping on the train right before the final stop.
What are your (and everybody's) thoughts on that?
Thank you again!
Pretty sure you're going to install CM on it soon as you get it, so no I don't believe you'll even notice the B&N are out of the game, as you put it
As the others say, there is a teeny bit of lag but the screen/battery life/sheer functionality you get more than make up for it.
One thing I sometimes wish for is GPS, but for the price really you're getting so much more than you're paying for.
They will continue to provide support through the warranty period and after that well you still have the forums here. The product works well enough as is and they haven't stopped selling content so it should be good for a while.

I bought 3 HD+ a year ago and all are still good running cm11. One is used as a DVR recording 2 cameras on motion to emmc. It's still alive but might break sooner (hope it doesn't).
The touchscreen is not that good, maybe because I use a screen protection.
Sometimes, alternating between apps (chrome, office) may be a bit slower. I used to use Swiftkey as custom keyboard, but aosps one is much lighter.
I've had my HD+ for a year and a half. Still loving it. Right now I'm running PAC-ROM on it and not having any real issues. I only update the ROM every month or so. But it's great for videos, surfing and reading. Still have no complaints about it and as long as trim keeps running, it doesn't lag too much.
