The Chinese variant supports Full Netcom 3.0 which during standby mode allows the 1st sim to be in 4G/3G and the 2nd sim to be in 3G-voice at the same time.

This means in countries like Japan and South Korea which do not have 2G network, both sims will be able to receive incoming calls via 3G during standby mode as neither sims are forced to 2G. As far as I know, this is different from all previous dual sim phones which only allow one sim to be in 4G/3G while forcing the other sim to be in 2G, thus rendering the second sim useless when there is no 2G network available.
From the youtube video reviews of the Indian variant, I have only seen one sim in 4G/3G while the other sim will be in 2G.
Does anyone know if the Indian variant supports dual standby with 4G/3G on the 1st sim and 3G-voice on the 2nd sim, at the same time, like the Chinese variant? Or will the 2nd sim be forced to 2G once the 1st sim is in 4G/3G, and vice versa?
Finally something that I've been looking for since I moved to Japan 2 years ago.
Now if only it doesn't look hideous...
as a force to establish that 1 to 3g sim was, and 2 sim only 2g?

I cannot help you with the question(s) on the Indian Mi 5 variant, but I may confirm that all current generation of phones are 4G+2G only.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/help/dual-sim-simultaneous-4g-3g-capable-t3370632
I don't think that MI5 works both SIMs 3G or LTE. Whenever I switch SIM1 as 3G or LTE Preferred instantly SIM2 will go to 2G only.
This is confirmed!

As far as I am aware, that is true for the Indian variant. The Chinese variant, however, is confirmed to be able to connect to both LTE + 3G simultaneously; I have 2 Chinese Mi 5 Pros and they both work as stated.
I have tested on mi Mi5 and i confirm that. First SIM is 2G/3G/4G with data and second SIM 2G/3G simultaneously.
I am in France and it is tested on Orange / Bouygues. It is the fist phone i have tested with this function...

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS MI5 china variant and MI5 India variant. You would like to think you are special, but you aren't. MI5 is produced in 3 variants (normal, prime, pro) and it's sold in china or in global markets .. like India.
so.. you might have to redo the question, so it can be properly answered. Nobody knows what is India variant of MI5... it might be a clone made in India as far as I know.

Calm down - don't recall saying I was special?
I read that in either the official Xiaomi forums or xda when I was wondering the same thing and some users said they couldn't get dual 3g purchased from the official Indian Mi5 store.

my mi 5 (indian version) during standby mode allows the 1st sim to be in 4G/3G and the 2nd sim to be in 3G..
however, this ability is kind of an issue for me, because i want my 2nd sim to be in 2G (to save battery & better reception of cellular network)
is there any way to force the 2nd sim to 2G?

In dialer *#*#4636*#*# or tap % times on memory capasity in settings. In additional settings you can chose Simcard 2 and inside chose Only GSM
After restart it has to be set up again.
So.. did anyone get to conclusion here?

Anyone else have any issues with one sim not working? I was on vampirefo's Zenui rom for a few days and both sims worked fine at the same time and then whichever one I don't have set as the data sim fails to work. It shows no signal for the sim thats not set as the data sim. Both had full signal yesterday. I flashed the LineageOS rom to see if it was rom related but still does the same thing. Am I missing something here?
AT&T shut down 2G
It's not just data that's affected. I get 4g anyhow. It shuts off the voice and SMS also on whichever sim isn't set as the default data sim
I retract my previous statement. Thanks lycsky for the insight. I've got Pure Talk USA on one sim and FreedomPop on the other. Whenever I set the preferred network type to 3g/4g on both whichever one isn't the data sim resets preferred type to 2g and it's greyed out. Is there any way to force it to not do that? In the preferred networks there's a list of about 20, can I delete the 2g ones and force 3g/4g?

AFAIK, this is the case for this phone. The hardware cannot handle both SIM on 3G/4G, so the usage is much more limited now with AT&T shut down 2G
I think your probably right. So I guess I'm sol on any kind of dual sim setup then as both puretalk and FreedomPop use at&t. I think they both use the mobile too but their coverage sucks here. Unless someone has a solution.
I have similar issue.
I insert H20 PAYG SIM card into Slot 1 for voice and txt only. And Freedompop SIM card for data into Slot 2 for data only.
For couple months, there was no problem to use. Last month, I noticed that SIM slot 1 keep shown as "no signal." I swap the SIM card each slots; H20 into slot 2 and Freedompop into slot 1, but same issue. H20 Sim card seems dead. I made call, the phone didn't ring. Also the phone didn't make call.

I turn off SIM slot 2(Freedompop) and set all voice, txt, and data to H20. And Now, H20 brings 4G LTE+Voice+TXT everything.
But actually that's not what I want.
I upgraded to v6.6 and then to v7.2 again, still same problem.

From what I understand the phone can't do 3 or 4g on both SIM cards at once. It can only do 2g on one and 3 or 4g on the other but at&t has done away with 2g and at&t is what H2O and FreedomPop both use. I think what I'm going to do is is just go with FreedomPop by itself.

Your are right.
I insert Lycamobile PAYG SIM card. Tested call and data, and both works OK.
I thought I used H20+Freedompop before, but guess it was Lycamobile+Freedompop.
My main phone number is on Google Voice, so too many SIM cards I swaped and used.
Unlike H20+Freedompop, Lycamobile+Freedompop shows R(roaming?) instead 4G, but speed seems almost same.

So are you able to use Lycamobile+FreedomPop at the same time then?
Same problem happened to me just after the first of the year.. I have always used my TracFone in SIM slot 1 (I think that is on AT&T network?!).
Then Freedompop on SIM slot 2.
Data is set for Freedompop. But when I do that SIM1 drops out and I can't send/receive calls/SMS on TracFone in SIM Slot 1.
From the discussion this sounds like it happened when AT&T dropped 2G and the BLU R1 HD doesn't support both cards in this situation?
Wow, okay, well that is too bad, but can someone confirm that it is the issue and there isn't going to be a solution for it? THANKS SO MUCH!!

The way I understand it is the R1 can't do both Sims if their both 3g and up, only 2g on one and 3g and up on the other. The only option I can figure is a T-Mobile carrier for calls/texts on 2g and an at&t carrier for data on the other. Where I live T-Mobile service is pretty much nil though. Be nice if it was just a matter of software but I'd imagine it's hardware related.
At the chance of sounding stupid, could someone explain to me why a data connection is needed anyway for just calls/SMS? It's not always been that way has it?

If you use AT&T this phone pretty much became single SIM. T-Mobile still have 2G, so you can have dual SIM function if you use T-Mobile signal for call/sms.

AT&T now use 3G for voice. They also have VoLTE. The voice still works if you turn off "cellular data". It's like a mandate network upgrade.
Yes, it's definitely the AT&T 2G migration. I was also on Freedompop (SIM1) and H2O (SIM2). Thus, I just switched to T-Mobile, which promises to keep supporting 2G until 2020. I'm not happy about it: T-mobile's pay-as-you-go is not as good a deal as H2O, and the call quality is not quite as good as being on the AT&T Network. And Freedompop's call quality over VOIP is just not good enough for me to use it as a primary voice line. But I've gotten addicted to Freedompop's free data (which I use to check Google Voice texts through Hangouts, so never pay for texts), so if I want to make calls through SIM2, T-mobile seems like the only option.
I switched to TPO wireless which uses T-Mobile I think. Still can't get both Sims to play nice with each other
Recently i installed Custom ROM LineasgeOS 14.1 . But currently i am facing two problem.
1. I am getting only GSM 2G network, no 3G or 4G.
2. No radio
System Details: LineageOS version : 14.1-20180418-NIGHTLY-cherry
Android Version : 7.1.2
Device Model: Che1-L04
Internet Provider: O2 postpaid (Country Germany)
Here is what i tried:
1.
Went to Phone Dialer;
Dial *#*#4636#*#* to choose phone information;
Set the Preferred Network Type to LTE/GSM auto (PRL);
Turn off the radio and turn it on again;
Go to the SMSC and click Refresh>> Update.
2. Changed phone internet setting, tried with different network types
3. Tried to change Access Point settings according to my provider
Nothing worked :crying::crying:
Did anyone faced the same problem or know how to solve this problem.

I think you should try other options listed in the Set Preferred Network Type, based on the type of Network listed the Wikipedia article. You can try to research about what type of network your carrier uses, then mix and match it until you get the appropriate setting.
Anyway, thank you for the *#*#4636#*#* that let me fixed my network.
Have a nice day fixing!

So finally i found the solution.
I found out that i had problem with dual sim. When i was using dual sim i was getting EDGE (2G) on my primary sim but when i removed my secondary sim then 3G/LTE start working . Even swapping primary and secondary sim in sim slot one and slot 2 was not helping. It is quite strange but it solved my problem.

Thank you so much! The mobile data was lacking in my Moto G6 Plus (running the official release lineage-17.1-20200407-nightly-evert-signed.zip). Once I tried to remove the SIM 2 from my phone, the mobile data worked so well. Then I pulled the two SIMs into my phone, and happily both worked at all. :good:

Hello all,
Recently purchased this phone.
As stated in the title I get 4g but when making or receiving a call default to 3g. Immediately back to 4g as soon as call over.
I disabled region check and Enhanced 4G LTE Mode toggle appeared in Mobile Network Settings. I enabled and restarted.
Also went into phone info using *#*#4636#*#* and all flags for voLTE are on there as well.
Carrier: Consumer Cellular (T mobile sim)
Bands 2 and 4
Does anyone know how to resolve ?

Maybe this can help you:
Download and install 4G Only Network Mode from Google Play Store.
Modify advanced network convigoration by opening the secret settings:
Click on Open Secret Settings
Under Set Preffered Network Type, choose LTE ONLY
This will automatically force your phone to exclusively connect to the 4G LTE only network.

I called them, they did something on their end so now calls start in 3g but go the 'H" after a few seconds.
Probably still not volte but an improvement.
My understanding is that volte calls have an "HD" for this phone

Yes, you're right. When volte is enabled you should see an HD icon next to your signal strength icon. Just like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

}
After your carrier enables volte you should reboot if you haven't already. Volte is used only with 4G, so after the reboot you should get the HD icon when you're connected on 4G. To test it out (or if you are still on 3G/H) do the following:
Press *#*#86583#*#* on dialer until carrier check is disabled. If it says enabled, just type it in again.
Then press *#*#4636#*#* on dialer to start the hidden menu. Go to the first tab, I believe it's called phone information, and scroll down where its says preferred network type. Note down the default value (it should restore on reboot and flight mode, but just in case) and select LTE (or 4G if it's called that) only. You will lose signal for a moment, and then you should be back running in 4G. Obviously, you need to be on a location with good 4G coverage.
Then, just make a call. If it gets through without dropping the data connection (4G symbol stays on), you're on volte. Go back to *#*#4636#*#* to restore your preferred network type, and enjoy
I tried everything posted so far but no luck.
I have a nexus 5x on with an identical sim on the same network/towers that shows me lte over the bars.
This phone only shows me 4G ..... is the phone capable of displaying lte ?
When selecting preferred network type lte only. It will drop the call.
LTE is 4G. Each phone uses different symbols, but it's the same. The fact that it drops the call probably means that volte is not enabled... weird. Have you contacted your carrier about it?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a2/how-to/guide-volte-t-mobile-yes-actually-t3869677
I just figured it out. Just follow the guide.
Thanks for the post Daha3ker ..... I will see if anyone else tries it before giving it a go.
I am quite sure at this point its a network issue as it is also happening on my Nexus 5x (LTE then H during call)
Confirmed it is a network issue. They are sending me ATT sims to try.
The tech support wasn't the brightest bulb, she kept trying to convince me I need to be on wifi to place an LTE call.
After some passive aggressive attempts to convince me she finally told me T-mobile does not support volte with them.
VoLTE depends of the carrier, it has to be enabled on his network equipments.
Some carriers enable it per phone line (they have to enable it for your line)
Moreover, some carriers restrict VoLTE for specific devices. Here in France, Orange enable VoLTE only for Apple and Samsung devices...

What if you just use a Samsung or Apple device to enable it?
Here in Greece, Cosmote also enables VoLTE only for specific devices, Samsung, Apple and Huawei. The Mi A2 isn't one of them. But I managed to... side-enable it. I just inserted my sim card in a Huawei device and sent the text to enable it. They enabled it in my sim, and of course it still works after I moved the sim back to the A2

Orange say that it is available and automatically enabled on Apple devices, and on Samsung devices which were purchased in Orange stores. So I think there is something special in phone rom.
Problem resolved. Was a carrier issue.
Required an ATT sim and add a new Access Point
* Note if using Consumer Cellular you will need the ATT sim for Volte.
Tmobile does not support Volte on CC as relayed by tech.

Hi. So I was having trouble with calls, signal drops, very annoying whooshing noises and so on. When I contacted the carrier they said let's turn VOLTE THEN WIFI CALLING. my wife and I have the p20 pro CLT-LO4 and neither of our phones have an option for volte or wifi calling. Contacted carrier(Koodo) I'm in canada. They said well it's suppose to be there reset you phone and check again. No dice then press *#*#4935#*#* and it does nothing. They say it's enabled on there end and don't have a solution... I called Huawei and they took my serial number and model and told me that it's the carrier 100%....
try this.
Open phone settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile network > both VoLTE calls and Wi-Fi calling settings should be there.
if you can't find, it is because the carrier disabled it in the rom. Try to unlock bootloader, root and flash an international rom to get it back.
When I talked to the carrier they assured that it was unlocked.
If you have a link on how to preform the tasks you said ide definately give it a try
Thank you
One question tho is it possible to brick the phone? Reason I'm asking is my wife's phone is 8 months old but I just switched from my s9 to this one 2 days ago so i can tech bring it back and get a refund but the problem is there isn't any other phones offered besides the p30 pro that compare and I would have to pay $690 down plus 20 a month for 24 months where as p20pro was $0 down and 15 a month.
If the carrier supports it, then you should have the option in settings. In my case, when I bought the phone only one of the two carriers that I have in each sim card was supporting WiFi calling. Now that both support it, I have it in the settings. The problem that I have found with WiFi calling though is that if you start a phone call through WiFi and you move to a place with bad reception, then the call is dropping. Also, if you are on a WiFi call and you go to a place where the wifi has no reception whatsoever, then again the call drops, instead of switching to normal call. In other words, whatever the way you make the call, you have to finish it. There is no switching during the call; this became really frustrating, so I now switched it to mobile network preferred

Alot of misinformation about this on the net.
Regardless of what your carrier says this is in fact a carrier issue.
If you simply swap sim cards to another carrier that DOES support these features on all phones with no restrictions then it will show up in the settings.

Exactly, line one doesn't have that option but SIM 2 does .

This screenshot is from a Mate 20 X but the same thing shows up when I insert this sim into a P20 Pro.
(Oh....in the United States when you pop in a T-Mobile SIM you will have Volte toggle in settings but not on ATT)

T-Mobile SIM 1 , no volte toggle here thanks for the clarification. My post was primarily to reinstate your point about WiFi being carrier/SIM dependent.

hi i tried searching in google for the volte enable in my mobile device Huawei P20 Pro , my other sim says it is volte ready however the other sim volte radio button cant be seen i tried switching sims but everytime i switch sim the volte button will transfer leaving me a sim card tray with no volte does this mean that it is the carrier needs to enable volte? others say that i need to wait for update on my mobile device
My device has a model CLT-L29 Global version for Huawei P20 Pro EMUI version is 10.0.0 Android 10 and it says for this version there is no update for EMUI 11 so does this mean i can not use volte anymore or do i need to contact carrier for the volte to be enabled?

I am also using CLT-L29 GLOBAL however only one sim has the wifi calling radio button enabled and hd calling but on sim 2 there is no volte calls radio button both sims are set to 4G i have tried switching sims but everytime i switch sims the sim that has volte calls radio button and wifi calling will move if i switch the sim cards the other sim tray no volte radio button will appear
I have bought an x40 and 5G just doesn't work. I should have 5G reception at home on EE, as it worked on my previous phone, but the x40 doesn't. I also tried other networks from my house mates, THREE, and VODAFONE and I still have no 5G whatsoever. So now I'm trying to see if Motorola is blocking Chinese variants, of if it's an Android 13 issue, because the network is definitely not the problem. On my network (EE) I'm also missing the "preferred network type" option in settings. This setting is present on Vodafone and Three, but I can only select 2g/3g/4g. No 5g
Dialing*#*#4636#*#* and manually switch to 5g doesn't do anything
NR state is also set to NONE
So does anyone who has an x30 pro can confirm that 5g works on their device? And if they have "preferred network type" in settings on EE, , and maybe post a screenshot with *#*#4636#*#*?
Thanks

I bought a Motorola X30 Pro (China variant of the Edge 30 Ultra) and has a similar issue but it depends on the carrier I am using (I'm from Southeast Asia).
I stay in Malaysia and using 1 Malaysian SIM and 1 Philippine SIM (Roaming)
Carrier 1: Digi -- no 5G option in preferred network type
Carrier 2: Globe Telecom (using Maxis telecom as roaming) -- 5G option available in preferred network type.
I travelled to Philippines last month and was able to use 5G under "Globe Telecom" whereas Digi couldn't connect to 5G.
With that said, I believe this is a network issue more than the device. Network carriers should provide a SIM card which is 5G ready.

Thing is, I tried 3/4 UK networks and none connected to 5G. Only 2 of the networks had the option "preferred network type" but not even those would let me choose 5G. So none of them connect to 5G. Also if I pop in my SIM into my old Poco F2 Pro, i get 5G as soon as I power up the phone. So I'm inclined to believe that the network is not the issue

Hmmm.. this is kinda weird. Check the 5G frequency bands supported by the X40 and what bands are provided by 3/4 UK networks whether they are compatible.
Another option is to call your carrier and ask them to "enable" 5G on your device. Just take a chance as they might have some sort of whitelist.
Just to add, I contacted "Digi" network yesterday why I'm not getting any 5G. They said 5G is only available for postpaid subscribers for now so yeah.

All the bands are supported be the phone, except for O2 UK which is a network I won't ever use
I tried calling EE too and they said they don't filter devices. As long as they're 5G capable, they get 5G.
All 5G bands are enabled on this phone but it just seems like 5g is disabled by Motorola somehow. I also just got a software update yesterday and I hoped that would fix it, but still no.
I browsed Motorola forum and this seems like a recurring issue on their phones.
These are only just a few examples from their forums
