Hey CDMA Tab Owners,
Hopefully we get off to a good foot this time but I was really curious what some of your thoughts and ideas would be for a new ROM? I notice the selection is a bit thin with a single ROM for each. I've been dabbing around the last couple days and I think I have a fair idea of where development stands for the Tab right now. Primarily GSM but I'd like to start some CDMA development of my own. Anyone looking for something besides what is already out there? (Don't say a HC port , not happening, yet.)
I'd love to hear some ideas. My thoughts on this are to start easy and have a primary focus of making the tablet a better, well tablet. I like AOSP/CM6/CM7 as much as the next guy but they just don't feel right on a tablet. So I definitely am leaning towards trying to optimize the tablet experience as much as possible to differentiate it further from a phone. Maybe look into some custom apps, nothing is off the table.
Please keep this clean and thoughtful.
Thank you.
I've been so confused as to why there is such a small amount of development for the CDMA tabs.
Anyways, thanks for taking a leap...I think a custom ROM, for starters, should be something that is deodexed for theming capabilities and has all of the bloatware removed to save space. I'm not too worried about having an OC kernel, yet, since I tried the one that is out for CDMA tabs and my phone bricked
I am willing to test what you put out, so let me know what you are able to come up with
Liberty or something like it !
I own a Droid x as well as my tab and would love to see Liberty or something like it. I would love to see a pulldown bar text editor, the Liberty toolbox where you can tweak settings yourself. I like the Khasmek orange theme and Im running it now with Voodoo rom with lag fixes and running like 2200+ quadrant, it's silky smooth I love it but would love to see more color options and more attention to the device. Something that optimizes the system as much as possible to save the battery and make the device last longer between charges. Nothing too specific just want Liberty, Apex, Rubix (which I haven't tried on my X but hear its good) Doesn't even have to be named any of those names, can be a mix of all of them with a different name...I would really love to see more development for this device my hope was restored when i saw Khasmeks orange theme and put it on my tab !!
ok
apparently only like 3 of us care ! lol
How about some ROMs?
First !
The bootloader is locked.

How does that make a difference? Droid X was locked and same with the D2, and both of them are Rooted and have custom ROM's out. Don't be a negative Nancy.
On Topic: I know the Developer on of the "Droid Concepts" ROM for the OG Droid is currently working on Rooting and then making a ROM for the D3, its only a matter of time before we have this baby cracked open and bloat-free!
I know Woodyman from DroidConcepts is going to support the D3, he got his last Friday. He put up the system dump, media and wallapers over at droidforums.net and is going to be working on some great stuff.
What we need to do is give developers a reason to go out and get a D3 and root and get CWM Recovery so we can truly enjoy the D3. I will gladly donate, any others?

1+ ... and thanks for speaking up Yonnor!
As a current Droid X user, devs have done magic with its 'locked bootloader', making for a wonderful ride. And by "wonderful ride" its great to have a phone without all of the VZW crapware, under/overvolt, under/overclock, etc .... all with a "locked bootloader." Even cvpcs has done the near impossible, getting Cyanogenmod's AOSP ROM to run on the Droid X.
So I'm really looking forward to seeing what the devs will be cooking up in the very near future, as when my renewal comes due (or full retail price if my patience doesn't hold out), the Droid 3 is scheduled to be my next phone.
Can someone deodex woodyman's download?
I'm getting
Code:
Error occured while loading boot class path files. Aborting.
org.jf.dexlib.Code.Analysis.ClassPath$ClassNotFoundException: Could not find superclass Ljunit/framework/TestCase;
I'd love some ROMS for the 3, but right now I'd be perfectly happy with root to get rid of some of the crapware that came on it.
Agree. Root good enough for me right now just so I can run some apps that work best with root.

I would donate to the Dev(s) that get the D3 rooted.
Woodyman posted that his team has begun working on finding an exploit for root. Still early but they are working. If other devs out there can help a group effort is alway easier
I'll likely be getting my D3 on Thursday, and I'm really excited to see what gets cooked up for it. Played with one today at my local store, and while I hate the Blur UI, it's not a deal-breaker, since LPP is my launcher of choice anyhow. I'd be more than willing to donate, once I get it too... like others, ROM availability isn't paramount to me atm, but the ability to use wireless tether is (unless somebody has found a way to get the vzw tether option for free). Otside of that, I can live with not being overclocked for the time being, and I'm sure we'll see a flurry of activity once the device hits everywhere, on Thursday. Can anyone verify if the D3 comes with a SD card or not though? The rep I spoke to today said it wasn't shipping with one, and it caused me momentary panic, lol. In any event, super excited to test drive this bad boy, but sad to be putting the D1 out to pasture! Hope things go well on the dev front.

SD card is not included with my Droid 3, if that's confirmation enough.
SD card is NOT included.
However, the internal storage (16gb) is mapped as /sdcard. Adding a physical sd-card to the device will have it mapped as /sdcard-ext.
So with a 16gb sd card installed...
internal storage = /sdcard (about 14 gb available since some is used for /system and /data)
16gb sd card = /sdcard-ext

I think the sd card was the absolute best place for moto to cut costs. I mean, who here doesn't already have one? Hell, most of us probably have spares laying around (I have about three I swap in and out of my nook color)
+1 on the donations. Let me know to whom and when. I received my D3 yesterday and haven't really put it through the paces because of work obligations. I'm new to the Moto Droid series (coming from the DInc.) Blur isn't as horrible as I assumed based on the rep it's gotten over the years. Having said that I use ADW EX. I'm just looking to debloat this mamajamma and like jjhiza get wireless tether working. The keyboard was the primary reason I decided to jump ship and it does not disappoint. Overall this is a solid, well built, buttery smooth device to use. The "short" battery life is hard to get used to. I was running chad's incredikernel on my DInc and could go about two days between charges with moderate use.
The DInc was the best smartphone I've owned to date and the dev community was unbelievable. Having said that I am gassed to move over to the Moto Droid community.
i hear getting root for GINGERBREAD is difficult. the way some gingerbread users have root right now is because ur still on a froyo source. at least thats what i been told by some devs
ive had mine for about 5 days. its wicked fast. zero lag even with blur and bloat. id love to have CM7 like on my og. much much better looking than the current blueish blur :/ trying to get that patched skype 2.0 over in GSII forum working on it. it wont pick up the cams..
The DEVS over here at XDA are exclaimed all across the web for being able to do the impossible. You guys are the heroes of not just geeks, but anyone who cares about freedom of personal property.
I'd like to see the amount of money this small group of people have not only saved the consumers, but made for Verizon, Moto, HTC, Samsung, LG, ATT, Sprint, and all the others.
Because of what you do, it makes their products more desireable. I wish they would realize that.
BUT, I know you devs love a good challenge, so let me wish you best of luck to please root this D3 ASAP! I'm coming from an OD and have had my D3 for a few days...sure its quick and awesome, but I know you guys will make it a phenom phone!
Add me to the group of people that will donate when you awesome guys get the D3 rooted.
My Bionic will arrive on Monday. Of my 4 other Android phones, I have rooted/rommed the last 3 with great results. I am comfortable with the idea, and welcome anything that enhances the experience. However, I am used to running on bottom tier phones. Rooting/Romming is a nice option, but is it necessary on the Bionic like it was on my Eris? Does the Bionic handle well out of the box?
it does very well out the box but things are always better with root IMO

My Bionic is my 4th Android phone and the only one I haven't rooted and may never root. Its solid out of the box. Fast as heck. To be honest I did root it once for a few hours to play with the dpi but I decided to unroot and stop tinkering with it. Part of the reason I chose this phone was because I wasn't planning on rooting or roming and wanted a solid out of the box experience. I'm running LPP on top of blur and loving it.

Yeah I wish ADW had this blur feature on it.
I had lots of hardware problems with my thunderbolt (the reason I have this phone) but it ran better stock than the bionic. I agree that the new blur isn't as bad as it use to be it still slows these phones down. I would root and debloat at least, however I prefer a ASOP style Rom as they are the fastest.

After 22 months of the Eris -17 months rooted - I bought a Bionic last week and decided to run it stock for as long as possible (and definitely as long as the 14 day return period) - including the stock launcher, which isn't fantastic, but not awful. Anyway, the phone is fine out of the box, as it is. Besides the annoyance of seeing the pre-loaded apps that I do not want, including the occasional market update of those apps, the Bionic is fine.
So far no black screen of death (BSOD) for me; I'm on WiFi most of the time, but I've seen a few 3G data dropouts out and about (where I KNOW that 3G data is fine), but none since I followed this trick: http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid-bionic/421050-useful-how-tos-tips.html#post3271941
(Note that this "trick" makes no sense - it's changing the default speech codec. But, no 3G data dropouts that I have noticed since I did it, so....)
As far as I know, rooting fixes neither of those problems, though perhaps I missed something. I think that we're just waiting for a fix from Motorola/VZW.

On my Eris, I found KaosFroyo (Punk.Kaos was a great dev!) and ran with that for a LONG time. Made using the Eris bearable.
Thank you all for your replies! I am looking forward to getting through this weekend! =)

Wow, I came from the same phone and my experience is completely opposite. In fact my stock Bionic runs better than my thunderbolt overclocked. Applications like LPP and car home run noticeably faster. Also Blur has a closer to aosp feel than htc sense does. I too like an aospish experience.

The best out of the box phone I ever had was the Galaxy S 2 for AT&T. This phone is pretty good stock.
what I did though immediately is root the phone (which is the easiest i have done since the captivate) and used an app from the market to remove the bloat apps.
other than that i replaced the launcher after a week and replaced the sms (both with "Go" products) and it runs great.
It's not the processor, the screen, or the battery that makes this phone. It is the LTE and i wouldnt trade that for an LTE-less galaxy s 2 ever.

LPP is inconsistent, on both my Droid X and T bolt it would work on some roms but it was really sluggish on others, even on updates of the same roms. I switched to go launcher because it has what I like from LPP and haven't had a problem since. With the right roms the Tbolt didn't need overclocking, with BAMF stripped and Forever 1 ghz was just as smooth as the same rom overclocked to 1.4 ghz, most other roms needed to be clocked at 1.2 or 1.4 ghz to be as smooth as those roms at 1 ghz.

LPP isn't inconsistent on the Bionic. I ran every tbolt rom imaginable. OMFGB and CM7 were the only ones that compared speed wise. As talented as the BAMF devs are, sense is still sense, heavy and sluggish. By the way, bamf stripped 1.7 was my all time fav tbolt rom and the BAMF devs are my favorite devs.

The Bionic is my 5th Android and they all have been rooted and had custom roms installed. Before I root it and get to installing custom roms, I would like to know what each one does well and what their weaknesses are. I don't currently have the time available to install them and play with them all like I normally do, so I'm asking the users who are currently using them.
3 things that are important to me: performance, battery life, and would like the camera not to take 5 seconds after clicking it before taking a picture(wouldn't care about this but have kids that I would like to take pictures of). I would also like to install custom boot screens (after owning the lg revolution, I now know that custom boot screens aren't always an easy task).

Unl3ash3d: Blur based and stock feel, but with extra mods and an extra pretty theme. Pulldown toggles.
Liberty: Stripped down, AOSP (as much as it can be) and a speed demon. Pretty lightweight. Lots of free RAM here. Pulldown toggles. Reboot and other options in the extended power menu.
Which one is better? Matter of taste. Do you fancy the new blur we have? If yes, go Unl3ash3d. Do you want a stripped down, clean, AOSP vanilla gingerbread feel? Go Liberty.
Battery life I couldn't tell you, as I never ran Liberty through a full discharge. I'm a (new)blur kind of guy - it's grown on me. Unl3ash3d gave me battery issues on some early builds, but this latest is great and gets me the best battery life I've had to date.
Both have different themes available for them, so that's equal as well.
Good luck.
P.S. When Eclipse drops in here, give that a whirl. Smooth.
As far as the camera goes, I agree that the stock one is pretty unusable compared to other phones. Both Liberty and Unl3ash3d have replaced the stock camera app with ones that I find work much faster and better.

I definitely appreciate this thread and would love to see more discussion from those with experience with the various roms. I've just switched from the Atrix to the Bionic and from some of the comments, I wasn't even sure if it was worth switching to a custom rom or not. Obviously they each offer some benefits, but complaints about battery life were a bit concerning. I also wasn't clear on how much faster/smoother any of them performed compared to stock (though it's pretty nice in stock form already).
As of now I'm rooted and running go launcher without any huge complaints, though I like to tinker and customize stuff, so that alone is driving my interest in running a rom, though I'm still having trouble with taking interest in a particular option.
CC Lemon, don't let the complaints about the existing roms scare you. This is still a relatively new phone and it takes time for the devs to work the bugs out. Over time, they will be worked out.

I wouldn't say that it scares me... I'm just not convinced there's anything I should be trying yet. I'm sure we'll see some great roms eventually, but I'm not looking for something that I'll update every time a new version is released, so I'd like something with as few bugs as possible. My post was mostly directed at trying to figure out if any current roms in their current form are worth using or if I should just wait until more bugs are worked out.
The recent CM7 developments definitely sound promising. I know it's just a matter of time before I decide to flash something, but the question is when and what.
Thinking about buying a new og droid from amazon. Im downgrading from my Bionic as its bootloader locked and can't stand not having soap. I've had the DROID incredible and battery was horrible no matter what I did, had the fascinate, charge, and now am looking to stick to my android roots until my upgrade in november. So should I do it?
Honestly, I was thinking about doing it myself a while back. Don't know about the new ones but the OG Droid as I remember was very responsive to overclocking and ran great. I loved mine. Thing felt like a tank. Only thing to consider is CM will be dropping support for the OG Droid with CM9. Droids are dirt cheap and if you're good with fixing gadgets, you can get one with a broken digitizer for next to nothing.
I just recently fullfilled my 2 yr contract and was looking at new phones, but decided to try rooting and using a custom ROM on my OG Droid to get back some speed and functionality. I am no longer planning to fork over $ for a new phone
They're cheap, so the risk is minimal, but imho it is a painful experience running anything higher than Froyo/CM6 on the OG Droid. I know people swear by CM7 (and various scripts like V6, etc), but I have never gotten CM7 or any other GB ROM running smoothly for me.
The problem isn't the speed (I have mine OCed to 1.2ghz), its the memory. 256mb just isn't enough anymore.
so cm6 is the way to go? I have no problem with that. Whats the better setup with cm6 as far as kernel matching with cm6? Would like to hear some setups from anyone using the old school og droid.
Currntly running PE6. 5 on my og droid with the stock kernel which is 1.05Ghz lv. Have used the V6 scripts in past with so so results, am currently using Juwe's Ram Manager with pretty successful results.

thanks! keep them coming
Looks like project elite 6.5 for me, unless they have something newer out. Anything else I need to know about project elite? Whats the verdict on it? Its hard to find info on the og droid roms, so much just scattered around.
It's an asop rom built by actngrezy, he has stated is working on a version 7 but nothing on it recently or date. Alot of info on PE roms at Droid Forums.

are you guys kidding me? this device is SO SLOW it's completely unusable. No matter how you tweak it, 256MB is just not enough. The day you go to a 512mb device, you will NEVER be able to return.... seriously

Gingerbread roms I'd recommend is Simply Stunning, Liquid, Project Elite, CushZero (as I'm using right now) im getting really good memory. I have been along time Droid user and tried just about every single rom that has been developed for it and finally found one that I can stick too.
If you're going to use Gingerbread, I'd recommend to use v6 supercharger (option 3 or superminfree calculator settings)
