Just to be clear, the tablet I believe you are referring to is the Amazon Fire 7" (not HD).
As of right now, the answer to your question depends on which version of FireOS your new tablet ships with. If it is a version lower than 5.1.3 then it can be rooted, before installing [ROM][UNOFFICIAL] CM-12.1 [20 Apr 2016]
FireOS 5.0.1, 5.1.1 or 5.1.2: Root it using the SuperTool by carefully choosing the correct options corresponding to the exact version you have.
FireOS 5.1.2.1: Download version 5.1.2 from this link and downgrade to it using the apply update from ADB option in stock recovery, then root it using the SuperTool as above.
FireOS 5.1.3: No method of rooting this particular version has been confirmed (yet).
Warning: Do not attempt to downgrade from 5.1.2 to 5.1.1 or from 5.1.1 to 5.0.1 - doing so will brick your device.
You may also want to consider an alternative ROM for this device, such as one of these:
[ROM][AOSP] Fire Nexus ROM - LMY49J [20 Apr 2016]
[ROM] SlimLP 5.1.1 for Amazon Fire 2015 (Ford)
[ROM] Resurrection-Remix-LP-v5.5.9 Amaz³n Fire 2015 (Ford) (17-12-2015)
BTW, similar questions have been asked recently here and here.

Some stores like Frys and probably Microcenter have them in stock. I bought one the other week and it was 5.1.1, no shipping fees either.

I want another ROM for Kindle Fire 7" (4th gen), but I can't find any.
I've currently followed the guide [here](http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-hd/general/how-to-upgrade-to-lollipop-root-gapps-t3163950), but I am not very satisfied with it. I am now running Fire OS 5 and using the 5.2.2u2 bootloader.
Is there any ROM recommended / how do I use the current ROM (e.g. CM 11)? Also, if I use ROM like CM 11, which version should I use, and what bootloader do I have to flash?

SlimLP is already based on android 5.1.1.
Perhaps I'm not understanding you question? Could you clarify?

So, I just ordered a 5th gen from amazon for $40 and my question is this, once I root it and remove the ads from the lockscreen using Rootjunky's supertool, should I flash CM12.1 or SlimLP via flashfire? Does flashfire even support flashing CM12.1 on 5.1.1? And should I use the 'mini' gapps that comes with SlimLP or the 'pico' gapps that's recommended for CM12.1?
you can flash CM12.1 with flashfire, but there have been some people which had issues, read the forum.
If you are on 5.0.x, do not upgrade, less chance to brick it. If on 5.1.1. do not downgrade at all!
Use the gapps recommended with each ROM

If you are flashing custom ROM don't bother removing the lock screen ads as they won't be there anyway.

Hi, I've got a brand new Kindle Fire with 7" screen (the 59$ tablet), which was shipped to me with Fire OS 5.1.2 last build 31 March 2016. What alternative rom can I install on it? What guide do I have to follow? Thanks!
All of the ROMs available from XDA are located in the Original Development section.
