How to update to HTC One M9 Lollipop or Marshmallow? - T-Mobile HTC One (M9)

Hi everyone,
I need some help if you may please. I bought an HTC One M9 phone and for a while it's been telling me to update to the newest android version. However, this was impossible because even when I downloaded the update from TMobile, when restarting, TWRP would kick in and wouldn't let me go through the whole setup. So, I got to some tutorials and I found some guidance but it's all so confusing and I've gotten to a point where I have no idea what to do next.
Phone is from:
-TMobile
What I did:
-Got rid of TWRP
-Got it back to unroot
Phone status as of now:
It works fine, but it's still not updated.
When going into the HTC Download mode screen, i get the following info:
-UNLOCKED
-htc_himaul PVT S-ON
-OS-1.32.531.24
-Warning: Security checking failed NOT_FIND_SMARTIO
FILE /mnt/media_rw/ext_sd/0PJAIMG.zip
File NOT FOUND
ADB is not reading my device when in download mode, I was trying to install stock recovery by following a tutorial in android soul: how to install stock recovery on htc one m9 (sorry but the forum won't let me post the link)
What do I need to do? There are so many tutorials out ther with so many different instructions that I'm totally confused now as to what to install or not to install . I'd like to install the Developer version but if I have to deal with the Tmobile one, that's ok.
Thanks in advance!

I rooted my HTC One and every time I go to install the OTA update, it just brings me to the bootloader. Nothing more then that. Is it because I didn't do a nandroid backup? Not too sure what that is. I'm also running stock Sense 5, no Roms or anything.
please help!
in order to install OTA, your phone needs a stock recovery, not a custom one.

[Q] Restoring OTA update capability

Hi All,
I'm new here and I came here because of some verizon HTC One (M7, cid = vzw001) troubles.
Last year when I got the phone I was intent on making it like a Google play edition phone. I did rumrunner to get s-off and I unlocked the bootloader somehow (I don't remember) and rooted it. I tried flashing a GPE rom but being a noob, I flashed a GSM rom and it did not boot. In a frantic effort to make my phone usable I downloaded a deodexed verizon stock rom and flashed it, and thankfully it worked. I was able to get the Sense 5.5 OTA update after that. A little while later, I installed TWRP because I did not have a recovery at all. Now the Sense 6 update has been out for awhile now and I had tried updating to it but it would take me straight to TWRP and stop. Later on I read about how TWRP stops OTA updates so I installed a stock recovery. I also uninstalled root. Today I looked at my mom's HTC One, and I looked at her stats under Recovery Menu:
hboot: 1.57
radio: 1.13.41.0.421
OS: 4.10.605
I flashed a 1.13.41.0.421 radio and updated somehow the hboot got updated when tinkering and now all those specs match my Mom's, but it is obviously not the same OS. My phone from the settings says it is 4.4.2, 3.11.605.1.
What can I do to essentially return it to fresh out of the box state with restored ota capability? I want to be able to update normally like my Mom's phone and I don't care about root access. I'm not sending it in for warranty do I don't care about turning S-ON or dealing with tampered flags.
Also I'm sort of a noob. I only have a basic idea on how to use fastboot, so a step by step walkthrough would be helpful.
Thanks,

Here is a step by step instructions for returning to stock. There is a Verizon HTC One Forum which has a ton of information much more than this forum. The Verizon phone is very different than the GSM version.

I read the thread but the link to the decrypted ruu was gone.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I flashed a 1.44 hboot
and the did fastboot reboot-bootloader
it went to a bootloop and I cant use fastboot
When I plug in my phone to the computer
my phone never says fastboot usb
Windows also says "malfuctioning device"
When I press power on
It goes to boot loop
I can enter the recovery menu
I have no idea how to use adb.
I think I'm screwed.

It looks like you got a corrupt hboot flash. I hope you got the hboot from the Verizon forum instead of this forum. This forum is geared to the GSM phones not the CDMA phones. You need to find a hboot for a Verizon phone in zip format to flash in recovery. The hboot controls the bootloader, so this could be the issue.
If you get that straighten out and you are able to use fastboot again, this post has a stock rom and firmware you can flash. Then you would have been back to stock. Spend time in the Verizon forum.

[Q] How do I downgrade Android?

Mod Edit: Added questions from 2 other threads.
1. I have Android 4.4.4 On my Sprint HTC One M8 and my wifi is broke because I didn't update the firmware. My device will not take the firewater method to S-OFF and I am not going to spend 25$ on Sunshine. I was wondering If i could update my firmware while still S-ON or If someone could tell me how to Get my device back to Android 4.4.2 so my wifi works again. I have no stock backup because I had them all saved on my computer which decided to take a dump and stop working. CID is SPCS_001. I would be happy to just get a complete stock Recovery and not worry about the whole root process but I can not find one to Flash. I have TWRP Installed and was hoping someone could help me find a recovery that will take me back to 4.4.2 Please, All Help is GREATLY appreciated.
2. I have tried using Firewater to S-OFF my Sprint HTC One M8, I get all the way down but Before it finishes it reads an error saying something about the golden rule never use OTA or something and it goes on to Say device has been patched by HTC. What can I do to fix this?
3. I am stuck. I am searching for a Sprint Branded HTC One M8 Recovery I can download and flash through TWRP. I get an error every time i try firewater to get s-off so i am stuck s-on. I was thinking i could just download a recovery and flash it thorough twrp back to Android 4.4.2 Please help i can't use 4.4.4. because i can't update my firmware.

Hi Tim,
The only way to downgrade is if you are s-off.
You can update your firmware while s-on...you have to re-lock your bootloader.
Please post all your questions in THIS thread as I'm going to close the others.
Try not to open multiple threads in the future.
Thanks for understanding,

Will waterfire work on my phone??? My phone keeps sending me a notification to update and I don't want to see or accidentally update it and brick it because I am already rooted. I just wanted to flash a new Rom (CM11 to be exact).

You could just cough up the $25 like a lot of other people have had to do.

Download - HTC One 7 OTA CID=TELST001 - 6.11.841.9

Download link to
OTA for HTC One 7 CID=TELST001 Software update 6.11.841.9 (181.54Mb) - December 23, 2014.
I unzipped this file, extracted the firmware.zip and upgrade my HTC One 7 (Telstra Australia) rooted and s-off.
I am unable to post link to this OTA file.
PM me if you like.

This could help me.
Hi,
I have my daughters HTC One M7, which is bricked after she tried to do a system update last weekend. It seems the battery ran out in the process and the handset is now in recovery mode. Telstra were no help to her in getting the problem fixed and sadly there are a lot of photos and other data on the phone.
Although I have an electronic/computing/comm's background I haven't done much with fixing HTC androids (my Sony's seem to not have any problems so far - touchwood) but I am comfortable enough to try and get the handset back up and working. So I have been trying without much success to find an RUU to match the info from getvar all.
: version-main: 6.11.841.9 , modelid: PN0714000 and cidnum: TELST001
Your post looked worth following up, so I have joined XDA so I can get some information.
Can you give me a clue as to where to find this RUU and also, do you have any other info that might help me in recovering the phone? There is quite a lot of information on this interweb about these handsets and similar problems but a lot of it doesn't match what I see on the handset and PC when trying to flash the device.
I am a newbie here so I am not fully conversant with the protocols so please go gentle on me
Hey mate.
Go to the XDA HTC one Australian users thread. @deeevan on that thread has supplied almost all the Telstra OTA's if you go through it. Was about to step you through flashing a stock RUU, but not sure if it's possible if the phone isn't rooted or s-off. Had your daughter got s-off before the accident? It's important that you only flash the RUU that is next in line from 6.11.841.9 or that exact version as you can re brick you phone if you skip an RUU.

Thanks for your help Joeisgood, I am having a look at that thread but as yet can't find the right RUU if there is one there. I am new to the forum as well so it isn't so intuitive to me as yet.
The handset is S-On (from getvars) so I am not sure what to do really. There is a lot of information available on fixing a bricked M7 but honestly, so of it isn't easy to understand and a lot of the guides seem to miss important steps (perhaps through a presumption that you already know/have that bit of info) or are aimed toward phones that are actually still working - such as references to turn on/off USB debugging which of course I can't get to. I haven't found a 'complete', easy to follow, step by step guide to cover my situation.
So I guess, that as the handset won't respond to any of the standard recovery options I am going to have to resort to other means. I am cautious about this - sure I can't make the phone worse than it is really, but there is data on it that I would like to try and recover (yes, I have jumped up and down time and again about backing up phone data!). I am not entirely sure that reloading the firmware will save that data anyway but I would still like to try.
So after all my research I am thinking that what I need to do is:
1. Flash a different recovery onto the phone (TWRP seems the most liked)? What version do I require or just the 'latest' one and how do I tell?
2. Get the Android SDK and in particular the ADB/Fastboot tools (I have the HTC tools, which I used fastboot to query the phone with getvars)? Again do I need a specific version for the M7? How do I know which version I am getting?
3. Use adb sideload to get the RUU (which I have yet to find the correct one) onto the phone? Is the Guru_Reset option the way to go if I can find a version, especiall with S-ON?
Anything else I need to consider or have to hand?
1. Flash a different recovery onto the phone (TWRP seems the most liked)? What version do I require or just the 'latest' one and how do I tell?
As well as S-ON, I assume it is also bootloader locked (as your daughter wouldn't have known/cared to unlock it). Unfortunately, flashing a custom recovery/going S-OFF etc requires unlocking the bootloader ... which means the data is wiped
2. Get the Android SDK and in particular the ADB/Fastboot tools (I have the HTC tools, which I used fastboot to query the phone with getvars)? Again do I need a specific version for the M7? How do I know which version I am getting?
You should already have adb along with fastboot. I do know there's issues with Win 8 so do some reading up on that, I don't have that OS so I can't help.
I don't have much experience with stock recovery, so I'm not sure what you can and can't do in it.
- Do the adb devices, adb shell, adb backup, adb pull commands work while in recovery?
- I think there's a menu option like 'install from phone storage'? When you select that, are you able to see the sdcard folder listing - that will at least confirm the data is still intact?
- If possible, try find the OTA file on the phone (look in the Downloads folder) and re-attempt the update.
3. Use adb sideload to get the RUU (which I have yet to find the correct one) onto the phone? Is the Guru_Reset option the way to go if I can find a version, especiall with S-ON
More bad news, with some hope
- HTC have never issued an RUU (which would wipe the phone so you don't want that) for any Australian version. But users have captured the OTA updates which will patch a phone to the next version
- All the files I uploaded are x.x.980.x while Telstra is x.x.841.x. They will not work on this phone.
- Flashing the Guru Reset requires a custom recovery which requires unlocking your bootloader which requires wiping data :-/
- Try sideloading the OTA from Qhaz. It may not work as you are already on that version, you may need to find the 7.x.841.x OTA

Thanks Deevan.. all useful information and much appreciated as there are lots of different comments and advices out there, hard to know which one is correct.
1. Yes, the phone is Locked and S-ON - never any need to change it until this failed update.. From your comment do I assume that unlocking the phone will wipe all the data? Am I able to sideload an OTA with it locked and S-ON?
2. I am using Win 7 to do all this. Yes, adb is in the same folder as fastboot. Trying the adb devices command in recovery mode returned zilch (nothing lested). I haven't tried those other commands but I will do. Going into Fastboot in recovery I do get a fastboot usb indicator and fastboot devices command returns the handset listed. That is why I was wondering if I needed to unlock it or use something like TWRP to get more recovery options. The Install from Phone storage did nothing that I could see just back to the exclamation mark in a triangle screen.. none of the stock recovery options did anything else.. Maybe the data is already wiped? If it's gone then it's gone. The bright side is that then opens up more options for me to get the handset working again I guess?
3. OK, I will stop looking for an RUU and hunt an 6.x.841.x or 7.x.841.x OTA instead or is the Guru_Reset a better option - there is no need for anything other than what is on the stock device really. A very basic user.
Thanks again for offering your advice, I appreciate it.
A Guru Reset (if one existed for a Telstra phone) is a custom ROM (which just happens to install stock files) and can only be flashed via custom recovery, which you do not have. You can try sideloading an OTA (you can do this locked because it's an official signed package), anything else requires unlocking your bootloader which may affect your warranty with no guarantees it enables you to do anything that would fix the phone. Corruption is highly likely if it died halfway through updating.
If the data is gone, I would accept the replacement phone and go nuts playing with that

[Q] which Firmware should be Flashed on Sprint 831 C ? Confused !!

Dear All,
Pl. somebody may guide me as to which Firmware shall be the correct one, to Flash with the details of my Handset as below:-
1) Sprint 831 C - M8_WHL PVT SHIP - S- OFF,
2) CID - 11111111
3) HBOOT - 3.16.0.0000
4) Radio : 1.00.20.0120.
Further, Since the device came to me in the S-OFF and SuperSU installed on it (Rooted), I managed to install twrp-2.7.0.2-m8.img, for which now I have backed up my complete system, and have nandroid backup for it.
Now, I am curious to install other custom rom as well, my earlier readings / understandings here & after googleling, warns me to do it untill I have the Firm ware updated.
My queries,
1) Should I download the RUU 1.5 GB 1) http://www.pocketables.com/2015/02/sprint-htc-one-m8-lollipop-via-otaruu.html or form here http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-m8-sprint/news/ and follow the instructions thereby.
2) May I at the liberty to install the Android Revolution HD ROM on HTC One M8 , available here : http://www.droidviews.com/install-android-revolution-hd-rom-on-htc-one-m8/
3) Will I loose, my S-OFF, Sim Unlock in doing above mentioned acts.
The snapshot of my device in bootloader mode is attached for your quick guidance.
Pl. help understand the above. Thank you all in advance.
Best Regards
Karan.
You can use the HK firmware from HTC USA website also. In fact I urge you to do this if you wish to use any Lollipop based ROM else you may face WiFi issues etc. It won't affect your S-off or anything. You can unlock your Bootloader also, in fact you should in my opinion.
I am using my 831c with ViperOneM8 4.3.0 which is reasonably stable to use as a daily driver.
I am using this with Reliance CDMA; no issues to report. You can find my guide to get rid of the annoying activation nag pop up. I'm traveling otherwise I'd link it here.
Edit: For CDMA in India or to get rid of activation pop-up, see here: http://www.rimweb.in/forums/topic/3...-on-htc-one-m8-hk-non-hk-edition-from-sprint/

Dear Sir,
First of all thank you so much for addressing so soon !! I appreciate that though travelling you took the courtesy for it.
Well, my device is GSM its not CDMA, Sir, my query is related to Firmware, can I use this file : 0P6BIMG_Sprint_HTC_One_M8_4.25.651.14_RUU.zip - hooked here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2729173, if your answer is assertive I would go ahead with flashing in SD CARD, hope its not in contradiction with my HBOOT Version. Regarding unlocking Bootloader , Sir its already unlocked, do I need to do it again ?
Moreover, I would love to install the rom ViperOneM8 4.3.0, suggested by you as well.
Thank You once again.

Hi Karan,
Your Bootloader isn't UNLOCKED. Your device is S-OFF but at least your Bootloader screenshot shows that your bootloader is still LOCKED. Could be an HBOOT trick, I don't know.
Well, you may be using your device as GSM only but be assured that it can also be used for CDMA if you want (INR 824 for unlimited calling, text and 3G is an amazing deal with Reliance CDMA.. LOL) but let's get back to your question.
I'd recommend flashing either of the two firmware files listed below. Since your phone has a SuperCID, you can even convert it to the Harman Kardon Edition (I don't know how much better/ worse it is honestly):
1. Harman Kardon Edition ROM: http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-m8-harman-kardon-edition-sprint/news/
2. Non-Harman Kardon Edition ROM: http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-m8-sprint/news/
They have the same fixes, etc., as far as I know. The Harman ROM has some audio enhancements that you may or may not need.
And yes, finally to answer your primary question, you can use the firmware that you have mentioned as well, I think it corresponds to the no. 2 link that I have posted.
You will need to remove some files to get rid of the activation nagger though. It keeps popping up "Hands Free Activation" and that is very annoying!
Good luck!

Hello sir,
Now, today I tried couple of things as below: -
As advised by you, firstly I attempted to unlock the Bootloader by using the Hasoon's AIO 2014 Toolkit, I booted in fastboot USB, even successfully got the Token Identifier submitted on HTC Dev however when tried to submit the bin file the command prompt window say error no device found. ( Pl. guide as what is going wrong , this process was repeated twice by me - NO Success found) .
Secondly, downloaded one of the files we discussed yesterday, the files i.e 0P6BIMG_Sprint_HTC_One_M8_4.25.651.14_RUU.zip, renamed to 0P6BIMG, kept in SD card (8 GB / EXFAT formatted), to which the device started scanning as soon as I attempted to enter the Bootloader mode (i.e Vol Dn + Pw), while scanning it says No Image / Wrong Image/ ( Pain full).
Finally, I also had a downloaded file of (Android_Revolution_HD-One_M8_41.0_866186), stated to be a Kitkat 4.4.2 rom, now assuming that I have already unlocked bootloader, I performed Install after wipe / Delvick Cache/Data/System, it went through whole installing however after coming on 100/- without my giving the command of reboot the device get's power offed. Thenafter performing the Vol Dn +Pw also it didn't responded , then tried Vol UP+Pw, which gave me the option to into recovery mode (TWRP ver 2.7.0.2) where I had the Backedup file, which was restored and that is how I saved my life.
Now, what is really going wrong not able to sum it up, even trying to unlock BLDR, does'nt help, request you intervention / help Sir.
Best Regards/Karan

You have TWRP it means your bootloader is already unlocked. You can go ahead and flash viper rom. even if you relocked because you have s-off you can flash anything.
To flash the zip, you can try directly from cmd by going to bootloader and type:
1 - "fastboot oem rebootRUU"
2 - "fastboot flash zip pathto.....zip"
This will format the internal memory 25GB and remove TWRP and return everything to stock.(if its the 1.5GB zip) You will not lose s-off.
Note: ARHD may not work on Sprint M8
Dear Sir,
Thanks for replying. Just to share I attempted to update the H/K 1.5 GB RUU stock file and got the success, however lost my SuperSU app, also root has gone as tried by installing rootchecker, which didn't gave the positive result.
Now my query is, that will I have to follow all the process of unlockng the btldr from HTC Dev, installing TWRP latest one, will I loose the S-off , Sim unlock etc... I am looking to install a ROM which has the Stock FM app in it, may I request you to suggest if any that shall work flawlessly in India.

If you install any custom sense ROM like viper or badboy, it will be rooted.
As for stock FM, it should be included in custom sense ROMs.
You will not lose simlock or soff by doing anything mentioned.
However some people(including me) get simlocked randomly, if it happens to you, you can do twrp backup, follow instructions to simunlock then restore backup again no matter what rom you were using.
