Galaxy S7 & Samsung Gear VR: I received a 32GB SD Card from Samsung as a promotion containing the Lands End app, some videos and Artwork, but have been unable to access any of the content from the Gear VR.
I have done the following:
Copied SD card files to the extSD card in my phone.( Gear VR uable to access them there.)
Moved the files from the external to the phones internal storage (Device Storage/Oculus) (Gear VR unable to access them there.)
Removed my extSD Card and Inserted the Samsung SD Card they sent into my phone. NO auto run or install. Received notification to move content, but no info of where to move them to.
Anyone know a solution on how I can utilize this content with the Gear VR? I'm guessing that I need to place the files in the correct Folder(s), but don't know the file path(s)
What phone are you running on. If it is different from an S7, try changing the buildprop.
-try installing the app by navigating to it and setting it up through ES Explorer or anything similar from your phone directly , hopefully they made an exception for that app since oculus prohibits setting up apps from external sources not unless you are a developer and you go through many steps to do it via what is called sideload (search it).
-on a side notice if the rest of the art work are 360 videos you will need to place them in a folder named Movies\360Videos on either internal or external memory and access them from oculus cinema app
-and last if they are of many files and weird namings then most probably these are MilkVR assets and should be placed in a folder named android\data\com.samsung.vrvideos\files on internal memory and accessed by MilkVR app

When I add new music to my sdcard via PC or downloading through the browser it doesn't show up in the stock music app.
I can open the file directly through a file explorer or browser download screen and it will play but it will have no options eg: no repeat or add to playlist
Has anyone come across this? Once I restart the phone it will show up correctly.
I noticed there is a media scanner in spare parts or dev tools but it doesn't help.
mine shows up pretty quick, where do you put the music onthe sd card and how do you dismount the sd card?
Had that problem too, a long time ago. Probably even before I got my Nexus and used a Galaxy Spica. What I did was download songs to my SD card over the network using ES File Explorer. I think Android doesn't really monitor the SD card, all it does is scan when the SD card is mounted. This way, if you use USB to transfer media from your PC, and then disconnect it, it gets mounted again, and the media scanner will run and find the new files. Any other way is probably broken... maybe you can trigger a scan by unmounting and remounting the SD card (from the settings menu)...
I remember there being an application on the market, sdcard rescan or something that did that.
yup, thats normal, if you copy music to the sd through an application. android does not monitor the filesystem for new music files and only scans on mount (which happens on bootup).
but yeah ther was an app for that. does anybody have the name?
free

perfect.
thanks for the mount tips too. makes sense.
or if your rom comes with "Dev Tools" just open media scanner.
Good one, forgot about that.
I'm trying to copy over files from my Windows computer to my Note 4 so I can quickly view things through the Gear VR. I have USB debugging turned on and it connects to my computer in camera mode. When I navigate to my SD card and open up the Oculus folder I see all the folders (360Photos, 360Videos, etc) however if I open any folder they all say 0 items and are blank and it won't let me copy files into any of these folders. Anybody know what is going on here?
Thanks.
I think mass storage feature was removed from android long time ago. If you use external drive and otg cable you can copy files from drive to memory card using Note's built in file manager (my files)

My steps are little different. Im using one of those sandisk memory sticks with usb connector on one side and micro usb on the other. Copy files from pc to memory stick and plug in memory stick to phone and transfer files using My Files app. I know it is extra step but allow me to have few movies on stick and load them when needed

I personally downloaded one of many apps that enable sd card writes. I believe you need root though. Now, I just copy with a usb to the computer. No need to take out the sd card. Make sure you download the Note 4 usb drivers for your os. Also, make sure your sd card is exFAT so you can copy files larger than 4gb. I have many 10+ gig 3D video / movie files I play with the Gear VR. The only issue is sound on some of them as it won't play. What I do is play the file on my computer and on the Gear VR at the same time. Good luck!

For the sound you need re-encode the file to mp4 with mp3 sound because wont play ac3 or aac encoded sound
Sent from my SM-N910T using XDA Free mobile app
for most the movies/videos iv done so far i used the settings below,
3D -
1920x540 or 1920x544
codec - H.264/MP4
Avg kbps - 4000 or 5000
H.264 Level - 4.1
MP3 (lame) as others was causing problems when coming from TrueHD & DTS-HD
bitrate - 160 or 320
for normal HD movie/vids
1280x720
all other settings same as for 3D.....
Posted this in the Oculus forums but I think it might help someone here as well.
If you want to move MilkVR content from internal storage to external SD (360 videos UI also makes it faster to pick content), it's pretty easy, you can do the same for the "experiences" (cant say for coldplay as that permacrashes on exynos) but you need to root to do those. Also this method allows to get all Jaunt content (there's quite a bit more), not just the beatle.
The same process also works for when MilkVR freezes during download and you get "waiting for other downloads to finish" infinitely.
1. get a decent file manager app, I grew fond of es3 manager
2. go into sdcard0 (device storage)
3. go into Android/data/com.samsung.vrvideo/files/
4. files prefixed temp_ are not fully downloaded files (delete those to fix the infinite queue bug)
5. if you open json files you can actually get the "real urls" for both download and streaming
6. copy over mp4/jpg to oculus/360videos/randomfolder then use the powervr tool to generate pvr thumbs if you want to have it superfancy
Obviously you can take this a step further and create a tasker task (again, root) to move them on command.
Felix and paul experiences are in the Oculus folder and can be copied into 360videos, then renamed to _RL for 3D, however you need to force audio into zarkana&strangers (videogo5 can do this without encoding). VRIntro has basic audio inside.
Jaunt content is in /data/data/ however they use a special method that puts top and bottom as images on right and I haven't gotten around to normalizing this in post. Maybe someone has any tips? This seems to be
Example for Hobbit "underwhelming experience of being on set VR" /data/data/com.jauntvr.preview.hobbit/app_jaunt/
Just updated, and the notes said that it allows side-loading from SD card. moved a few videos over to the same path on SD card as on device, restarted Milk VR, but it doesn't show them in the downloaded section. Anyone have any insight on this? I've searched, but I haven't been able to find just a "Milk VR" board anywhere.

Q: Can I test / side load my own 360 videos in MilkVR without a MilkVR account?
A: Yes, videos can also be side loaded without MilkVR accounts by creating a “MilkVR” folder in the root directory and placing mp4 files there. Files that are side loaded will show up automatically in the “Downloaded” folder and thumbnails for those videos will be generated when the app starts. The first time MilkVR sees your side loaded videos, it generates the thumbnails for them. If the mp4 file has “3dv” or “3dh” in the filename the MilkVR player will play the video as top bottom stereoscopic or side by side stereoscopic respectively. The MilkVR team would suggest using stereo sparingly as stereo effectively halves the resolution of your video.
Q: Does MilkVR support side loading from the Note 4 sdcard?
A: No, but we are adding support for it into MilkVRv1.29. Just put videos in a "MilkVR" folder in the root of the sdcard.
LOL, I must have been to milkvr.com a half a dozen times, and never saw that faq link. I'm not a content provider type, so I didn't register, and didn't think the page was for end users. THANKS Dave, for being kind and pointing out what should have been the blatantly obvious!
you are welcome. I think link was not very good positioned
I have a different problem. I subscribed to a page (virtualreal ... ) where you can download a json file and the movie. If i place it in phone memorys samsungvr folder, everything works. If i place the 2 files on sd card, i see a movie running if i look up, and a second if i look down. So it doesnt work.

Add _3dv to the end of the file name. Before the .mp4 of course.

That might work, although I suspect it won't work properly because MilkVR just isn't looking on the SD card for the JSON files. So this solution is like doing without the JSON file.
What definitely works, because I've tried it, is putting the JSON files in the usual Samsung.vrvideo folder on the phone and putting the video files on the SD card in the MilkVR folder.
You do have to edit the JSON files to change the path to the video to where it is on your SD card.
Yes, editing the JSON file (and moving it to the internal storage) is an actual solution, rather than masking the issue.
Thanks!
Hopefully in MilkVR v1.30, they will read the JSON file from the SD card, too.
How do you edit the JSON file to change the path

Use a text editor, such as Notepad.
The JSON file needs to be edited for the new location of the video in the MilkVR folder on the external card.
"local_url": "file:////storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.samsung.vrvideo/files/..." should be changed to "local_url": "file:////storage/extSdCard/MilkVR/..."
The JSON file still needs to be in the Android/data/com.samsung.vrvideo/files/... folder on the Note 4.
Hopefully the next update of MilkVR will look in both places for the JSON file.

hm, well as milk vr is designed for 360 or 180 degree movies i think they will get weirdly streched but you can test it out:
copy your movie file into this folder: "\Phone\Android\data\com.samsung.vrvideo\files"
then add "3dv" to the filename for top/bottom stereoscopic movie format
check out the Milk VR Faq for more information concerning the appends to filenames
do not find any launcher for Milk VR
Dear Friends,
I successfully install the Milk VR but I don't find any launcher/shortcut/icon to launch the apps in Gear VR. Did i miss any installation proccedure.
I am using hola vpn to use the apps from Bangladesh.

Just download nova launcher and add it as an activity (you can add any app from oculus you want that way). Not sure why it isn't showing up on the homescreen.
Just long press anywhere on the screen -> shortcuts -> activities -> scroll down to Milk VR. Then when you launch the app you just have to put it into the gear vr headset. :good:

I also like having 3D movie experience with Gear VR. (ifastime.com/watch-3d-movie-on-vr-headsets.html)
Hi,
Can somebody upload three films downloaded from milk vr "Inside the Box of Kurios" "Jurassic World Apatosaurus" "Cirque du Soleil Zarka"
I think i have never noticed before, as this is the first device i have not rooted or installed a CR.
But i have noticed on large games with large OBB files, when moved to the SD, the OBB file stays on the internal storage, and only the apk file itself moves to the SD Card, things like game settings etc.
So it kinda makes it abit pointless having a SD Card apart form Photos, Movies and Music.
My 64GB Card has become redundant until i root / xposed it.
Anyone else noticed this, or found a work around, They removed adoptable storage didnt they?
working as intended.
it's one of Google's strangest choices, to not include what's typically the largest file in the "move to SD" option.
something you could do is manually move all your obb files to the sdcard, and then move them back temporarily when you need them.
or keep less large games on your phone.

Its BS that they still can't manage to do this in 2019..
My tablet has 32GB and I bought a 256GB MicroSD for this to store games. But it's pretty much useless..
I should of went with an iPad........
