gear-vr not charging the device when used in cardboard mode - Samsung Gear VR

heya,
anyone has experienced this issue ? the device (s6, but i tried also with an s7) is charging correctly using the passthrough port of the gear-vr while using the gearvr/oculus software. but, switching to cardboard mode using any of the different cardboard-enabler apps (i tried almost all), the device doesnt charge anymore when plugged to power via the gear-vr passthrough. i bought a cheap vr headset to overcome this, since i mostly use cardboard stuff, but the quality is nowhere near the gear-vr.
any tip ?

the port has a mind of its own really and oculus persist to keep silent about it , for some it doesnt even charge at all even with the gear vr service running , some came to think it was for otg only but it didn't work , some came to think its for data transfer but it is unrecognized when connected , so you are lucky it gets to charge for you in one state .. cheers

In addition to what night-mayor said when you use gear vr mode the charge port is only supported by actual Samsung fast charge capable charger that came with the S6 and similarly compatible phones.

funny i use the original samsung fast charger and it still wont charge for me , if it does for you then most probably they started adopting identity chips in chargers like apple . but did you see it work for yourself ?

I have the original Samsung S7 fast charge charger and cable and it refuses to charge whilst using VR meaning I have to stop when the battery is low every time. This is ridiculous although probably better for my eyes lol
I am going to try the cable in the GVR box and see if that works instead.

[Q] Cant charge with external battery

Hey guys,
I have the ZNEX Powerpack:
Capacity: [email protected],7V
Output: 5V 1A
amazon.de/ZNEX-Ausgangsleistung-Hochleistungsakku-Playstation-Blackberry/dp/B004A8288U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1363106013&sr=8-1
Unfortunately its not possible for me to charge my s3 mini with this external battery.
The cable and the battery is okay, tested that with other devices.
Anyone can solve this problem or has it too?
Thanks

Thanks for the quick answer but that doesnt work
also when the device is off and i turn on the external battery the device turns on and gets into a load mode or something (it doesnt even load at this Point, seems so that it just init the "turned off charging" dont know how i should call that )
same Thing when i restart the phone with external battery plugged on, there just happens nothing, normal boot process without any hint of charging^^
Ahh really? I had same issue and my method seemed to work are you trying with ur usb cable that came with the phone or the one that cane with the battery power. Try both out

What do you mean with "the one that cane with the battery power"?
Ive tried a lot of different usb cables they work all with the original charging-adapter but None with the external battery
tried it with the Amazon Basics usb cable, original Samsung data cable and the cable from the old Motorola xt 720 ^^
But thank you for the answer
strange.. when device is off can it charge or it doesnt charge at all with the samsung data cable. If it does charge while off, when its charging turn on the phone and it should charge as well.

Sadly that doesn´t work too. The device is doing absolutely nothing when i restart it from the turned off charging. Its like it wouldn´t know that theres a cable that wants to Charge it.

Same problem here. No matter what external battery pack, this S3 mini is not detecting the battery pack as a charger. All of these packs work just fine with any other phone: tried with 2 SII, i8910, different Nokia phones, Blackberrry's etc.
I suspect that somewhere in the kernel there's no "3rd" unknown source or it has odd values, or it's somewhere else, but definitely soft problem as phone usb port works fine and recharges just fine from PC or laptop with any and every usb cable. Same goes for wall chargers. I haven't tried with car chargers just yet, but might do so. Just the phone is not mine, it's my wife's phone so I can't just take it with me.
Any suggestions?
Just a quicky: Is your phone trying or connecting to a PC in MTP mode?
XXAMA2 rom here and it always has only MTP or Picture mode, maybe this triggers something if on external power pack?
Edit: BTW, even when phone is turned off it won't charge the battery from the 3rd party external battery packs... weird.
Edit2: It started to charge out of 2.1A port on external pack after 5 minutes... then continued to charge once the phone is turned on. Later I unplugged it and plugged in again and it won't charge if the phone is on. Oh well, at least it can charge if first turned off. At least that when on the road and without wall plug...
Even more strange is what I'm getting now when plugging to Duracel external pack - phone starts the music player on it's own and starts to play... I think it's defo something related to MTP or such...
Strange. My power bank works just fine. The charging indicator shows when I plug my S3Mini with my power bank. (Cheap chinese brand. 5200mAh, 1.0 A)
Usually when the USB indicator showed up when you plug your external power source, the cable is the one with 4 lines (two for transferring data, and the other two for receiving electricity needed for charging, or +/- ).
Try using the USB cable with two lines only (electricity lines only, without data transferring lines)

Well, after trying all USb cables I have in my house I found one that is CHARGING IT!!! I dunno what wires it has or not and I don't care ATM. Point is there's nothing (EDIT) wrong with battery packs nor the phone. It all still indicates damn MTP kicking in where it shouldn't IMO. Dang Samsung for screwing it all up yet another time.
Still, I'm happy it CAN work all right, so no more depleted battery when on the road / trip
Thanks for a great suggestion there!

Veryyy slow charging

Went to a music festival over the weekend and used a portable charger to charge my phone, this is the last time I remember my phone fully charging. Once it died and I got back home, my phone would occasionally say USB connected and not charge until it said USB disconnected. Now it doesn't say that anymore but it charges ridiculously slow...
-Overnight charging I got 40%
-Left my phone for 3 hours and got 11%
-Use my phone while it's plugging into the charger and the battery still lowers rather than charging.
I've tried putting it in Ultra power saving mode and charging it while it's off but there is no big difference, I'm mad cause this cable is supposed to be charging it super fast.. Writing this post while my phone is plugged in I've already lost 2%
Nothing is wrong with my cord or the plug I am using, it's all the same stuff I have been using before. Could there be a problem with the port or something? Helppp
My phone is also in great condition always had a case, and just got it this past April
*also my phone is rooted so I don't think I can use the warranty

Are you sure? Cords die easily. Can you confirm how many amps the cord and the plug are allowing to be pulled? I've seen different phones pull different amps from different cords and plugs.
You can un-root and get back to a clean phone if you want to take it back.

If you have tried other cables and get the same result, you may have a problem. However I have seen cords got from .44a to over 1.2a from two different phones though.

check the power brick your using, if its the Samsung one that came with the phone it should be like 2 amps if I remember. id suggest using another power brick to test. also if you have a usb 3 super speed port on a pc or laptop sometimes you can use device manager in windows (start menu, right click computer, manage, in the window that opens click device manager, expand the universal serial bus controllers heading, check though any devices that say hub and go to their power tab) to see how many amps something is pulling from a pc usb. the other option is that you might have a defective battery but I don't know for sure. these are just some ideas that may or may not work for you.

Sounds like the portable charger might have been able to adjust amperage or voltage. If that's the case the portable charger could have damaged your battery if it was wrong amp and too high of amps. I have a portable charger that even changes voltage that could ruin a device too if not on 5 volts.

It sounds like it could be a battery problem. More likely, it could be a problem with the software. I would back everything up and flash another ROM or bring it back to full stock.
Option 1:
Install this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ccc71.bmw
It will tell you batter voltage and charging current.
Options 2:
Charge with phone powered off.
Thank you everyone for the replies, my phones been getting worse to the point where it sometimes wont charge.
I think what im going to do is flash back to stock and bring it in to samsung or something , but also i heard a rumor that towelroot doesnt void the knox warranty? if this is true i may just bring it in as is...only becuase when i connect my phone my laptop wont read it anymore either, i havent tried if odin will but im assuming it would, i just dont want my phone to end up bricking because of the bad connection
This sounds like an old problem with Samsung phones, including the Galaxy S series. My original Galaxy S did this, my S3 did this, my sister's S3 did this. On those phones it was the charging port that caused the problem. My sister had her port replaced and her phone is working fine again.
Although I don't know for sure if that's your problem, that would be my first guess.

Suddenly 'smart dock connected' and usb no longer working? what to do? SM-N9208

Hey guys!
I have no idea whats happening here. Love the phone and everything was working perfectly with zero issues.
Suddenly today noticed several dozen notifications of 'smart dock connected' and Gear VR wanting to be installed (it had not been plugged in for a charge overnight or anything and was at about 50%). This 'smart dock connected' notice would be impossible since 1. it wasnt even connected to anything and 2. dont even have a 'smart dock'.
Now it appears to mysteriously not be responding to USB cable be it via charging to original fast charger, an anker charger or even PC. Does appear to be charging wirelessly though. Gear VR is now installed since it incessantly brought it up for some reason.
Have already tried the following:
1. restarted several dozen times
2. switched off completely and turned back on a dozen times
3. plugged in and out the usb charging cable a few times, slowly and rapidly
4. plugged in usb cable to PC a few times
5. tried different usb cables
6. vacuumed + blown out the usb power port + cleaned it with a soft cloth
Lost as to whats going on here and what to do. Help

It says Gear VR powered by Oculus when starting. Is this the new one? This notification etc only showed up today and had never seen it before.
No one else has experienced their phone not charging anymore? or their USB not working? or 'Smart Dock connected' notification or Gear VR coming up?
On shutting off the phone completely I played around with plugging it in for a charge. Seemed like when it was completely off it accepted charge but not quite. With the original samsung fast charger seemed like it kept dropping out (regardless of USB cable used). With the Anker and its smart iq power it showed the anker light switching on and off too. So it appeared as though it wasnt accepting a constant charge from either device?
Then after that when I started it, it again haphazardly would accept charge somewhat until I put it on the wireless charger and then again smart dock popped up and would no longer accept even haphazard charge via cable.
Uninstalled the Oculus and Gear VR stuff or forced it to stop as much as I could via app manager and on restart SAMSUNG GEAR VR again pops up asking to be installed.
I read of similar issue on androidcentral but no one here has experienced this? No ideas or solutions?
I'm having this exact same issue after opening the cardbord VR setting in the youtube app. Its the setting that appears in the gear button after you have started a video.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note5/help/note-5-stopped-charging-wireless-wired-t3253218
Had the exact same issue. Went over to the service center and they said it's a motherboard issue, so they got it replaced (covered by warranty).
I'm having the same issues. I uninstalled all apps that I could related to oculus or vr or anything similar and force stopped the rest and cleared all the data I could. I think it may have just been one that I couldn't remove. I still get these annoying battery notifications thought. Its just constantly buzzing in my pocket in random spurts throughout the day. Is the real problem a motherboard issue? That seems odd as it hasn't been doing it for the whole time I had the phone, and I haven't damaged or dropped the phone once.

Wireless Charging Stopped Working

Wireless charging on my bundled Wireless Charging Convertible pad stopped working yesterday and I haven't been able to get it to function again. Starting yesterday morning, the charger pad wouldn't recognize the phone at all, case off. After playing around for a while, including clearing the cache from Recovery, I can get the charger to recognize the phone, the phone now says Fast Charging, but the phone continues to drain over time vs charging. Some users in the past have gotten a Charging Paused message, by I don't get that message unless I remove the phone from the charging pad.
I've tried two Samsung Fast Charging AC adapters, the USB cable that came with the charging pad, and an Aukey cable, same results.
Has anybody else experienced any issues like this with their Note 8 or convertible charging pad?
Edit: MST also doesn't work, I'd guess it's related.

Only way to diagnose this would be by trying to charge the phone with another wireless charging pad.
Does your phone charge normally through the provided type-C cable and power adapter?
Found a non-convertible style wireless charger a co-worker had, which charges his S7, but doesn't charge mine Note8. Could it be the phone itself?

I would not rule that out. I would take your charger and phone to a local best buy and test against a display, if your charger charges other phones, then it's your note. Or try your carriers local corporate store, they probably would help as well.
Sent from my Galaxy Note8 using XDA Labs
Well I can verify that the phone is the problem. Note 8 won't charge on any wireless charging pad, and Samsung Pay's MST also stopped working at the same time. Going to contact Samsung and see what can be done, hope I don't have to set up a new phone yet again.
This happens to me alot. I have 2 wireless pads, 1 verizon (from my note 7) and the Samsung Fast Charge.. It just stops working randomly.. Reboot the phone, then starts working fine again.
I still use my Nokia wireless pad....I found it charged the time as the Samsung fast wireless charger.
Probably not much help but are you on the latest firmware? When I updated mine it said the new changes were for the camera & wireless charging but of course no other details.
I haven't had a problem with mine though even before the update. I don't have the bundled charging pad though, I'm using the older Samsung fast charge pad.
https://www.sammobile.com/2017/09/1...-firmware-update-improves-camera-performance/
Good luck. Same problem with my s8+, samsung says its not the phone. But it is. Every problem with a warranty repair is like pulling teeth with samsung. I wish LG would up thier phone game just a little, and I would never buy another samsung again.
Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk
is this after the 9/25 update? Mine stopped charging after that update on both Samsung fast wireless chargers I have.
I have a Note 5 that will not charge on either a normal wireless Samsung charger or a fast charger Samsung pad IF the protective case is on it. This started just this week. I can remove the protective case and then it will charge.
I don't recall getting an update on or after 9/25. N950USQU1AQI5. I did get an update that improved camera performance, but it was a week or two ago. Just performed a factory reset, no luck on a fresh install. I can also confirm MST on Samsung Pay still doesn't work after factory default, they have to be related. Frustrated I'm going to have to deal with warranty. After two Note 7's, going through another Note 8 is beyond frustrating. QA @ Samsung could really use some work.
So Samsung has agreed to repair/replace the phone, but I'll be without the phone for 3 weeks. Since I just switched to Verizon, the only old cell phone I have won't work. Since I bought from Samsung.com directly, Verizon won't help. Samsung.com refuses to provide a loaner/temp phone or to cross-ship a new one. Their manufacturing defect means I have to bear the burden of their problems. I wouldn't care too much about wireless charging, but MST is also affected, and I love MST.
Lesson learned - Never purchase a phone directly from Samsung.com, even if that means getting a discount or promotion.
I just sent my Note 8 in for the Same thing. After 4 weeks of ownership it stopped charging wirelessly.
The Samsung Rep I spoke to seemed to think it was related to the NFC, something about NFC being involved in the wireless charging some how. So MST must be the reason.
I sent my Axon 7 for warranty repair the same day. Luckily I still have my LG V20 and Nexus 6P (with is horridly degraded battery), so I have backup phones.
I'm on firmware AQI5 and wireless charging has stopped working completely. I've tried Samsung and third party chargers, all of which worked last week and still work with other phones. So I'm thinking it's a firmware bug...

Describes my problem almost perfectly. Now on my third VZW note 8. First one charged fast wireless for exactly a month. Second one, worked for eight days. Now the third, 7 days.
All four of my offical Samsung wireless chargers quit recognizing at the same time. FYI; two charge pads and two charge stands all fast wireless and purchased thru out my time with S7 Edge (went thru 2 rounds note 7). To add to that the new promo convertible quit at the same time as well.
Pretty darn sure it's in the phones. The latest phone charged wirelessly to 100%, then nine hours of driving later, no go. Pulled my UAG Monarch off, still nothing. Tried the other wireless chargers, nothing. No new apps or settings changed during my drive. Thoroughly confused.
All three of phones were put thru the ringer with VZW tech support: check this, check that, safe mode and the end all factory data reset, still no go every time. I contacted Samsung directly once, what a waste of time. Their only answer was send it in for evaluation and possible repair or replacement, you should have your phone back in a couple weeks. Second go around with Samsung, I was transferred by VZW. Their answer that time was; send the phone and the charger. Had to reply, which charger, all of them? Samsung, then told me all of my older chargers aren't compatible with the note 8 and must have damaged it. That style of charger is still readily available and advertised as note 8 compatible.
I've never used NFC or MST, so I can't comment on that.
All three phones fast charge on the wire.
Can anyone verify compatibility or lack there of with all these fast wireless chargers I own?
Willing to try anything at this point. I would dump the 8, if I didn't use the pen so much. Been using note phone since the 2.

According to the rep I spoke to it was to do with NFC, as it is somehow involved with the wireless charging process.
Sound a bit strange, but others are saying that wireless or MST payments are both affected. So I guess wireless payments and wireless charging are somehow connected.

I don't think it is. I got them to do a warranty replacement, and my new phone worked fine. But, as soon as I wiped my old phone in preparation for returning it, it started working as well. Then, a couple of days later, my new phone stopped wireless charging.
Right now, I am just hoping that the Oreo update fixes it.

Sound a bit strange, but others are saying that wireless or MST payments are both affected. So I guess worked payments and worked charging are somehow connected.

I also am not convinced about this. My wireless charging is not working, but myt Samsung Pay works fine.

Note charging other devices?

Just seen message 'charge connected device' when connected to BMW charging socket.
It's pretty cool if it can for example charge my Bluetooth headphones

Yeah I saw a video mentioning this. You can use the included USB adapter to plug in a charging cable. I haven't tried myself. Guy mentioned something about it only balancing though, for example if you are trying to charge another phone, the Note 8 won't full charge the other device, they will just get some what equal.
Apparantly other older Samsung devices could do this too but you need Samsung's app to do it. It was called power sharing or something like that.
You got the message plugging it into your car? Weird, that doesn't make any sense. What would it be trying to charge on your car?
Used to charge my Gear Watch with my Note 4.... Note 8 also does it.
ok deffo can be useful on train as sometimes travelling to from work headphones die, so if i can juice up some amount that would be useful. Will try this asap
