I picked this for cheap recently. Is there any way to root my model? I'm on 5.1.1 and I don't care about lte connectivity since I primarily use wifi and can tether it to my phone if need be. I read that the 810 firm could be flashed but you would lose lte which I'm fine with but I can't find clear instructions on how to do so.
It's bootloader locked device, don't try flashing anything unless you want a non functioning device.

Hi all!!!
I'm considering to buy the Moto X, I have a couple if questions though:
If I unlock the bootloader through Motorola, does root become easier (I realize that it isn't simple otherwise)
Is the bootloader relockable?
If I unlock a brand new phone, I won't lose anything, correct? You only lose what you install other than stock, is that correct?
Thanx all in advance...

1. Yes if you unlock all you have to do is flash a custom recovery and supersu. Pwnmymoto is pretty easy too, though.
2. Yes but I don't think that will give you back your warranty
3. Unlocking will basically do a factory reset in the device. So if it's brand new and you haven't used it yet you won't lose anything. But if it's already set up and being used be sure to save anything important before you unlock.

Thanx!!! Isn't there an issue with PwnMyMoto with the camera update? Also it's safe to assume that once rooted WiFi tethering (like with FoxFi) will work, correct?

i would suggest replying to someone if you want them to respond to you otherwise it won't show up in their notifications if they aren't subscribed to the thread.
PwnMyMoto didn't screw up the camera update. It was built for the android OS that came stock on the phone. Maintaining root through the OTA/ camera update is difficult currently. But that is partly because all of the info on the updates haven't been released yet. As time goes on and things develop and those smarter than me decide to get things done we should be able to maintain root through the update and future updates with no problems. Also, safestrap was recently released and is working through bugs but it will be fully functional soon and we will be able to use roms through them and not take the updates.
wifi tethering only matters on vza at least if you have unlimited data. Otherwise, they don't charge to wifi tether anymore. you just can't go above your data limit. But yes, rooting allow those 3rd party tethering apps to work. They may even work without root actually. But with root you can change the stock tethering app and keep your carrier from knowing you are tethering.
@jayboyyyy Thanx!!!
I'm strongly considering switching from Tmo to RW to save some money. I have the S4 currently, which is feature packed but just feels like a llittle kids phone. Since RWs version of the Moto X uses proprietary software for wifi calling, has this made rooting the device difficult in any way? If I want to run stock android but have root access with the X on RW will I have any difficulty or limitations/
Also, I tether occasionally, maybe once every few weeks when I'm on the go and want to use my Nexus 10 and there's no wifi around. I know RW opposes tethering. How likely are they to go after someone who tethers if they stay well below their monthly data? Have any of you heard back from them after tethering? And does androids built in tethering feature/app work once rooted, or will I have to use a third party tethering app?
Thanks.

YES! I'm on RW with unlocked bootloader (thanks middleman), and the WiFi tether app works perfectly (NO native/built-in tether ability on the RW variant). If you unlock your bootloader (see the China Middleman Back??) thread in the general sub-forum. let me know and I'll link you to the appropriate instructions.
I don't know if this will work with tethered root (PIE), but I doubt it. I only KNOW that it works if you have unlocked bootloader.
Additionally, the tether app I refer to "hides" tether usage, so likely they will assume you are using that data on the device itself. I've had no issues, but stay WELL within the 5GB limit (rarely exceed 2GB).
Good Luck

Thanks for your reply. The tethering/mobile hotspot is completely removed from the Moto X RW ROM if I'm understanding you correctly then?
Which tethering app do you use? and please do link me to the instructions you used. Does OTA updating still work when you unlock the bootloader and apply root?

OTA updating will stop working at the point you flash a custom recovery (which is required to root). You can cross that bridge when a new OTA comes out, as we will no doubt have to advise countless people on what steps to take to be able to accept the OTA. Basically it involves disabling any modifications made to /system, disabling Xposed (if installed), and flashing back STOCK RECOVERY. Being unlocked has no affect on being able to accept the OTA.
Here is the relevant thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/solved-republic-wireless-unlocked-t2755730
Be sure to use the specific wifi-tether app listed in POST # 2 in that thread. You'll notice that it didn't work for me until I did a complete return-to-stock for unknown issues. The built-in hotspot feature has somehow been disabled by RW, and attempting to use it results in the RW app immediately "stealing" back WiFi, and a message saying something to the effect of "WTF? The phone just stole back WiFi access" appears on the screen LOL! Neither the Xposed module or the entitlement bypass worked for me, with any of the options (including the Sprint-specific build.prop tweak).
PLUS, native tether does NOT 'HIDE' usage, so they might know you are indeed tethering!!! I don't suggest trying...
Good Luck, let me know if you have additional questions.
I got my Moto X a few days ago and I'm very impressed. Republic has the 30 day trial period, but I'm more 90% sure I'm sticking with it, but if I do want to return it, can I unroot/lock the bootloader? Will they check to see if it has been rooted?
Are these the instructions I should follow? I'm on 4.2.2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/guide-republic-wireless-moto-x-kitkat-4-t2738233
You can always flash back to stock but you can never return the phone to its locked bootloader state. It would read "relocked" and not "locked"

Hey all,
As the title aludes to, I'm totally lost with rooting my note 3 running 4.4.4. I've been pokling around this site for a few hours but I'm not really seeing what I need. Basically all I want to do is be able to tether my note 3 (it's SIM unlocked on an african Carrier,. the phone is from at&t originally though). As I understand it, i need to root my phone in order to use this feature (f*ck AT&T). Anyway, I did use the search but I can't find any info on rooting a phone that is already on 4.4.4. Do i need to downgrade or is there an a way to root 4.4.4. In any case could someone give me a full step by step or point me in the right direction? I hate to be that guy posting duplicate threads but I'm kinda stuck. Sorry/thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum.
No, there's no way to root 4.4.4 that I know of yet, you have to install 4.4.2, root it, flash a 4.4.4 that won't kill your data, then it should be rooted.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-3-att/general/n900aucucnc2-odin-files-t2838117 are the 4.4.2 (NC2) files. I don't have a link to the 4.4.4 files handy, but I'm sure they're in the development subforum. (You want the 4 separate files, not the all-in-one, so your data doesn't get overwritten - in both cases.) Get into 4.4.2, root with https://towelroot.com/ then go back to 4.4.4 (if you want - I'm still running 4.4.2, so I don't have to reflash kernels to get into SafeStrap; Mobile Odin doesn't work on the Note 3 yet, and I don't want to carry a laptop around in my pocket).
I think.
I went round and round with different ROMs all last week, reflashing 4.4.2 after each one, rooting, installing SafeStrap, restoring my data, etc., etc., until I can't remember exactly what the exact steps are, but I think I got it right.
And there are a few threads her on how to root 4.4.4 - with downgrading to 4.4.2, or just flashing the 4.4.2 kernel, or something.
But no, you can't directly root 4.4.4 yet.
As for tethering, see if there's a tethering app that will work without rooting, or just go to Settings/Connections and enable Tethering and see if that works. If it does, there's no reason to go through all the trouble of rooting (which is terrifying the first time you do it - and boring by the 10th).

Thanks for the info! I'll give it a try once I get home. Unfortunatly there's no way to tether on an unrooted unless at&t allows it (that I know of). And at&t cant allow it since I don't have them as a carrier right now. I've trid a couple apps from the appstore already and they either try to carrier verify or it's just a widget of the phones tethering function. I don't particularly care about flashing custom roms so if there's a way to tether in my situation then I'd love to try.
I have a t-mobile purchases N6 that is running rooted stock. This morning I got the message that the 5.1.1 update was available and I let it download but since I am running TWRP, nothing happened at reboot which is what you would expect. Can I just install the rom that downloads? I know there is a rooted stock rom available but I sometimes use wifi calling. I don't care if I lose root but I want to make sure I don't brick my phone.
I think more than anything I don't want to keep looking at the notification that tells me there is a new version and it won't go away.
You won't be able to flash the OTA file since you made modifications to /system. It will just fail The OTA is just a patch and not a full image.
If you want to update to 5.1.1, you'll need to flash the image or a custom ROM.
Ok thanks! Other than losing WiFi calling, is there any issue with flashing the international ROM to a T-Mobile phone? I know T-Mobile has a weird band that isn't always connected with all radios, at least on other phones.
if you want wifi calling and 5.1.1, install the t-mobile specific rom here:

You can install international versions and have it work on T-Mobile. If you want all the features, flash this latest version.
First of all, hi everyone owo/
Well, as the title says, my dad bought two unlocked S5's from Amazon and both of them come from AT&T and we use them here with Personal which is an Argentinian network carrier
Everything works fine, 4G works great, but one of the issues is this one
Since it passed 3 years when KitKat got the latest update (4.4.4, on the phone is 4.4.2 .-.) some apps do not want to upgrade at the Play Store since sometimes on Android when is not upgraded, some apps lose compatibility with the device (On this I doubt, I'm not 100% sure) and I want to ask to you guys if you can help me with steps to at least upgrade my mom's phone and mine (since my dad is getting a new one and gives me his S5) to Lollipop without rooting the device, because here on XDA I saw a post on how to do it but it requires root and I'm not going to do it just to be safe, so I was curious to see if there's a possibility of upgrading the system through Odin, which I do have a little bit of experience (I did have it with an older Sammy phone, not the newest ones) without losing the carrier unlock thing
If you guys can remember there was a code to let you know if the network was unlocked or not but sadly it does not work anymore so I don't have any idea if it is permanent or not other than switching the cards, so my question is, I will lose the unlock if I update the system through Odin??
Also I don't have a AT&T specific SIM card to do the upgrade (Which for me is BS having only the AT&T card to do system updates) and I saw some posts on XDA on how to update it but only I saw the root method to update fom KK to Lolli and I don't want to root it, I want to do it just normally through Odin saving me some time
I'm not against root, is fine but I always prefer a much safer way instead of tinkering with some important system stuff and also I'm new into this forum (And I visited XDA since 2012)
Have a good day

It is highly suggested that you root with towelroot and upgrade with flashfire. You can't root on Lollipop and you can't downgrade back to KK. May as well root now just in case you ever need it. Root doesn't modify system files on its own, the end-user does that.
