I am working on a project, where I need to get a Raspberry pi online via a cell modem. Seems like others have solved this problem using USB dongles. But I'm having trouble finding anyone who's done it with Project Fi. I'd like to use Project Fi, because it just makes sense. I dont want a contract, and its a data-only thing.
I havent found anyone who's used this particular combination, so I'm hesitant to order a dongle until I have a reasonable amount of faith in the hardware i'm ordering.
I need the Pi to run raspbian. So the dongle needs to work with raspbian. I've found information regarding the Huawei LTE USB Modem E173. They used t-mobile though, and while I know FI uses t-mobile, it'd be great if I could get confirmation somehow that it would work.
I'd also like to keep the cost low, this thing is going to see about a month of use, so I dont want to spend a ton of money on it.
So, how do I identify what dongles work with Fi?
Thanks!

I'm trying to do the same thing did you find a USB dongle to run Fi thanks I can't find a real answer
Yea, answers are slim.
I bought a Huawei E353 on a guess that it would work. it supports tmobile, and i belive sprint.
I activated my Fi account, and got a sim. I stuck the sim in my Nexus 5x to be sure it was activated, and then once I was sure it was working, stuck it into the E353. I did manage to get it working, but it's not optimal. You need to switch the dongle from storage mode to cell mode every time you connect it, which you're supposed to be able to automate with usb_modeswitch, but i havent had any luck.
After it's switched, you can just connect using wvdial, and you're online. I haven't used it excessively, or worked out all the bugs, but it does work.

I'm using tnt lite 3.1.4, also had vegan, but none could do anything with my 3g sticks. Following different forums, I see most devices can (at least some specific sticks). Has anyone managed to set up a 3G conection? Is there a how to I could follow? What chipset the stick had?
Thanks,

I tried a sprint usb aircard.. no go..
The only way I have been able to get a 3G connection is to wirelessly tether to my DroidX work phone...
1) Install Z4root on the droid and run it to root the phone
2) Install wifi tether on the droid and set up a wep key and ssid
3) Turn on the wifi tether
4) The table sees this wifi "router" or connection, I set the wep key on that connection, the two units negotiate an IP, and zap, it has 3G through the droid
Not sure if this is helpful, but that is what I had to do in my own situation.
if it's in the kernel, it should seriously work, but someone has to build it. there's absolutely no reason for this not to work if someone builds it -- it has conceptually worked in linux for years.

I can build the kernel but I believe we need to add some stuff in initrc for the usb to connect to serial (like ttyUSB). Once I get another Gtab, I'll look into this.

exactly man, thanks for stepping up! this will be ultimately useful on many different devices with usb host features, and shouldn't be ridiculously difficult to get going, and gain some real cred with the tablet community, especially now as we're the first with this new tegra2 platform, with over 20-30 new devices coming soon. i'm unsure of how many are wifi-only, but the ability to merely jack in with a 3g/4g usb modem would be ultimately useful to many, and will save a ton of money for folks.

A kernel supporting the 3g sticks would be great I have 3 of them, so I am ready for testing

Thanks for that. I also use teether from my NexusOne, but I have to give it up as I got to move to BlackBerry - so I need a different solution... (what a step backwards :-(

The stick is probably seen in the kernel. The other parts, Networkmanager, dialier, ppp are not on the tab. They would have to be recompiled for the arm processor and I'm not sure what other work is needed.
Thanks Clemsyn. Using your latest kernel with Vegan B5.1. I bought a Novatel USB727 (Verizon) stick off ebay (built in Linux support) just to try this out. Would gladly test if needed.
I would also be happy to test with ATT and Verizon 3G USB modems...
Update:
Built a kernel with 3g USB support, used my friend's Verizon Mifi, plugged it in the Gtab and it turns on, Dmesg shows it is detected as Novatel wireless and shows it's serial info. That's about it, can't browse and use it. Any ideas?
I'll try my usb modem using the ubuntu load. It should have the other networking parts to dial and connect.
In the ubuntu load, networkmanager is not supported yet so usb modems are still on hold.
Yes please, we need this. I have a sprint card from work and would love to ditch the laptop when travelling. Clemsyn, I could send you a copy of sprint smart view 3g manager if you think it would help.

I am able to use 3G easily using MyWi app from Cydia on my iPhone. This Gtablet works great on 3G! And since I always have my phone on me, I always have a 3G network on my Gtablet! iPhones basically suck, but this is probably the only good thing I've been able to use it for! And man oh man, its working great! Btw, When my phone contract runs out, I'm going to change to the Evo! That would be sweet!

Same here. I've been using Wireless Tether on my rooted Droid X with an unlimited 3G data plan for several weeks and it is pretty sweet. And like you said, since I have my phone with me all the time anyway, this seemed like an obvious solution.
I would be interested in the progress of this usb effort since my carrier now offers 4G modems.
Does anyone have any idea if the gtablet will tether to the blackberry

Perhaps our main problem - is that excluded from the firmware application for telephone calls?
I've ditched cable TV, and I'm loving the freedom. I'm wanting to ditch my house phone as well, and then only need internet from my service provider. They really hit you hard for not having TV, making the phone like $30 a month just for an effing land line! I have a cell, but I have a wife and kid at home that need a land line for occasional use. I've looked to adding a line to my cell plan, and I didn't get on a family plan, so another line is like $50 a month. So I'm looking at some kinda VOIP solution, I really like Ooma service. However the unit is like $200. I was thinking maybe Magic Jack but I don't like the annual fee. I just want to pay once and have a solution that's long term. Plus I don't like Magic Jack's gimmicky feel, makes it seem cheap. I can get over it if it's really the best option, but just personal feeling. Either way I'm open to suggestion, just tired of being over charged for a phone we use occasionally. Ideas?
I don't know all the providers that are out there, but if you find a provider that will allow to register your DID number using Asterisk, and you have an old (P 4 gen. one, or newer) laying around. This way you van configure it to suit your needs. The best part is you don't need to buy expensive VoIP phones. Just an inexpensive ATA (analog telephone adapter) that can be found on ebay, and use all of your existing home phones and wiring.
The only down fall to this setup (as with any VoIP setup) is you will need a UPS to keep it running in the event of a power failure.
If you have questions let me know.

Oh you shouldn't left that door open,I've got a lot of questions!
So an Asterisk setup w/ ATA Adapter is essentially what Magic Jack and Ooma are doing, just charging you for it?
How would I check if my provider (I'm presuming you mean my internet provider) will allow me to register my DID number, just call them?
What is "P 4 gen. one, or newer" referring to?
I'm sorry I just need a little more explanation on the process, or if you could link me to a how-to page. I just need a point of reference to Google from, this concept is completely new to me.
Hehe, I dont mind.
1. Correct, but with the added benefit of being able to configure/customize it to your needs.
2. I'm not talking your current ISP (you will needt to keep them) I ment like Vonage, or Voipo, etc. Alot of them will give you a "free adapter" that that you can not customize much. Call them and see if the would be willing to give you SIP credentials (login) in place of the adapter, or go with one that offers SIP trunking, (all phone features like vm, cid, etc would be handled by you rather then the provider). SIP trunk providers just do the orig/term of your phone number, and then send traffic to you (ring) when someone calls your number.
Most (if not all) VoIP providers have the ability to port your number. meaning that you would be able to keep your current Land-line number. (same idea as changing cellular providers but keeping your phone number)
3. A "P4 gen one or newer" would be a computer desktop that has a pentium 4 or better, with at least 512 MB of RAM, and at least one NIC (network interface). I would suggest running Asterisk in a Linux/Unix environment, as that is native, and runs with out all the over head of Windows
This is a good howto, although a bit old. I would suggest running either Asterisk 1.8 or 10, as they are both supported (ver. 1.4 isn't anymore, but i'm not sure about 1.6).
One other thing I forgot to mention is e911. If you do decide to go the VoIP route (running either Asterisk or just using a providers provided adapter, make sure they offer this. In the event that you need to call 911, your home address will be registered, and you will be connected to you local PD dispatch (they will know where you are). If this is not offered, you may get connected to a regional dispatch, and it will take longer for your local PD/EMS/Fire to get to you.
@nj_PeePs
Sorry it's been so long to get a reply back to you, life gets in the way. However I saw a Slickdeals offer that sparked the thought about our convo. The OBi110 is this an example of an ATA adapter that would work? Also is there an ATA adapter that's tailored to work for this application? I'm just looking for which bit of gear I should buy to start working on this project. Thanks!
EDIT: Or I just found the OBi202 looks like it does USB and Bluetooth, would that be a better first purchase?
Gotta switch but, I was wondering if 2 things are available in wp8 for sprint. 1- Is there any restriction for downloads and is there free Internet sharing. I realize this question is redundant but I keep getting different answers.
I can't speak for Sprint specifically, but in general...
The restrictions for downloads (I assume you mean things like "apps over 20MB must be downloaded over WiFi" or some such thing) should be the same as on WP7. In theory it's possible for us to override those restrictions, although I don't think anybody has yet written an app to do it.
The built-in "Internet Sharing" feature works exactly like it does on WP7. If your Arrive is allowed to do it, your Ativ S Neo will be too.
thanks
Let me explain. Sprint charges for WiFi hot spot usage. With Leads rom on my arrive I am able to use internet sharing for free. I guess my main concern about a switch is whether I can do this still for free. Thanks
If you don't see anything here, its because it hasn't been found yet. I'm trying to find the same for Verizon, but LTE has made a mess of things. The Android gurus won't help either...
I hope a internet sharing/hotspot solution is available for Sprint.
I'm eligible for upgrade March 1st, and was going to get the Ativ S Neo just for a change of pace. Been using Android for 3 or 4 years now, the last windows phone I had was a Touch Pro 2.
Not a deal breaker, but I do use hotspot fairly regularly to get around works firewall...
Some people are experimenting with partially-customized ROMs for the Ativ S (no idea if they've gotten to the Neo yet; it's relatively new). Those *might* support the kinds of changes needed for free tethering.
Alternatively, you may be able to use wired tethering for free via the Diagnosis app. I can (my plan includes tethering at no extra cost, but it is capped; when I use wired tethering it doesn't report any tethered data usage).

CDMA Tethering has changed these days. They have built in "entitlement checks" to see if your eligible for tethering. I went to one of the Verizon device threads and asked but no luck.
The device username is the only thing listed. On another note, Verizon's USB modems seem to talk directly through a Networking Adapter instead of a normal modem. Their VZManager might need looked at more.
Sprint might be different OTOH.

Looking for opinions and suggestions for enabling texts and SMS messages to display on the MTCB unit while driving. What, if anything are you guys using?
I searched around already, and found one thread where someone was using tasker and other functions to get messages displayed on the unit from their phone, but that solution didn't appear to be very reliable.
Is there an app that everyone is using? Or am I just late to the party? lol
I realize quite a few of you are using 3G connections with your MTCB, so this conversation is more geared towards those utilizing their Bluetooth only phone connection.

Even using a 3G/4G dongle cannot solve the SMS reception problem because these SMS are normally sent to the phone number, not to the 3G/4G SIM number. At most the dongle can be used to send SMS.
ATM no easy solution to this problem (and for social networks use too).
Have you looked at Tablet Talk? I'm not sure it would work over BT since the BT in these devices is locked down, but I believe there is also the option of using Wifi.
The other thread was mine and I was looking for the same thing
As mentioned above, I don't think it's actually possible with these units since it seems the Bluetooth is locked down. Can't remember the specific details but I'm sure it's to do with the Bluetooth service that handles the messages.
I could be wrong though but I know its not possible with tasker anyway and I don't think tablet talk works with Bluetooth cause I looked into that too. At the moment the way I do it is through data which as you say isn't quite as reliable
If you find anything though let me know

That's why I started this thread, to see if anyone had made any breakthroughs since your initial post. I went ahead and wasted the money on Tablet Talk, and I can confirm that the Bluetooth connection is the issue (Error Code:1) with our units. This seems like such a basic feature that Android would be capable of... my wife's Jeep does it automatically in Uconnect.
One thing I was considering trying with TabletTalk is to go into the factory settings, with the 126 password, and toggle around the Bluetooth type the unit is currently using. I know saving anything in this menu will effectively reset my unit, unless I save settings in Xposed, so I need a block of time to try it that I don't have right now. If it would even make a difference.

That's a good idea actually! If I get some free time I'll have a go
I've been playing around with VRidge a lot lately, and it's really cool - being able to play VR games on my computer and stream them to my phone is nice. I'm using the 5ghz wifi streaming method for now and it works great, but... My phone heats up a lot after 10-15 minutes. Through some testing of various non-streaming GearVR games and apps, I can say with some certainty that it's the fact I'm streaming over wifi that's causing my phone to heat up.
So knowing that, I've been trying to get tethering to work. Of course the first thing I did was just try to turn it on in my settings - but Verizon wants another $30/month for the honor, which is just absurd since I'm already paying that for 2 whole gb of bandwidth a month. So with that out the window, I've tried a few other options:
Cyanogenmod Tether
PdaNet+
A method I found here involving Network Signal Refresher
Pulling my sim card (Won't even let me try without a sim card in)
Rooting methods... Obviously can't do any of these because as far as I know, the Verizon Note 5 has yet to be rooted. (Please correct me if I'm wrong)
Needless to say, none of these worked... For RiftCat at least. I've submitted a feature request to utilize a tether app instead of the native tether, but some brief googling makes me think this may not be possible (The developer of a competing project mentioned something along those lines last year).
So, I have a few ideas that I wanted XDA's opinions on:
A "test sim card" - I can pick a few up for a few dollars. Will this allow me to enable usb tethering, or will it check to see if the SIM card is valid / has 5g first?
A usb-to-ethernet cable, plugged into an ethernet card on my computer and hopefully finding a way to make my phone think it's just a wifi connection. Is this even possible? I had the idea an hour ago and haven't had much time to research it.
Drilling holes into my GearVR phone cover, attaching a fan to it, and hoping it can cool my phone's CPU down.
New idea: Get a sim card from a "pay for what you use" service like Ting and turn off mobile data when I use USB tethering... Can this iteration of the Note 5 do that?
...?
On a related note, is there a more active place I can post this to? I picked this forum because it's specific to my device, but I feel like it's an issue a lot of people have.
