downgrade from marsh. to lollipop - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys,
I also made the mistake to upgrade from my fine working lollipop 5.1.1 to marsh-batterydrain-mallow.
I have a sony z3 compact D5803 and all I want is the following:
- install an unbranded STOCK 23.4.A.1.264 lollipop 5.0.1 firmware again (preferably a Dutch one) on a clean internal storage (so I would like to erase everything on the z3 compact).
I already looked on the forums of course, like here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/general/list-stock-firmwares-d5803-d5833-t2906706
But I don't see the option to completely wipe all the data including this f* marshmallow and install a clean non-rooted lollipop tutorial. Anybody here willing to help?

First of all it is not 'normal' that you battery performance is worse on MM. You may consider doing a clean flash and give it another try.
You can downgrade with the instructions in the link you indicated (do not forget to back-up your data). Actually Flashtool itself includes the links to all (?) firmwares that are available. The Nordic, US and German unbranded firmwares work well in the Netherlands (they also include the Dutch language pack). If you tick all the items inside the "Wipe" box, MM will be removed.

+1
Battery on MM is as good or better than LL, so if you are experiencing strange battery drain, then it's worth investigating to find the cause, rather than give up and go back to an older build.
BBS is your friend and the folks on the thread there will be happy to help with any wakelocks you don't understand.
Google Play Services is usually the culprit, have a look under settings/battery/battery usage. If Play Services is in the top 5 then that's your problem.
Problems with Google Play services are usually caused by location services or syncronisation errors on your Google account. Have you looked at your account sync status in settings? anything with an exclamation mark?
It might be something as simple as not logging into Chrome that's causing it to try and sync repeatedly, over & over, draining your battery. Turn Google sync off for a couple of days and see if the battery drain goes goes away?
Have you changed your password recently? I had this happen to me after changing my password, I had to delete my account, force stop play services, wipe data for play services, boot to recovery wipe dalvic/cache. When I rebooted phone I added account again with new password. Solved.
The location services bug seems to have disappeared since MM.
This isn't a rom problem

Well i actually don't agree. A lot of people are complaining that mm is worse than lp regarding battery life. The stamina mode in lollipop does wonderful things.
I first completely formatted my phone and then used flashtool to flash back to lp 5.1.1 and my battery life is perfect again

Why ask for help if you're going to just give up?
I am getting 4 days between charges on my MM build.

I actually already gave up on mm before I started this thread. I wanted to get rid of mm.
Are you using mm on a sony z3 compact? How much screen-on time do you get on a full charge then? On lp I easy get 4hrs plus with heavy usage. On mm I barely managed to get 3hrs with heavy usage

KitKat Quick Glance

As we all note kitkat has been out for 2 days
My quick impression is that it isn't good
LAAAAAG in launcher (Not Lockscreen nor apps) (GPU Rendering isn'T very effective)
Battery is being killed
Camera seems to worse in low light condition (Will post an comparason later) and slower
No update for the stock apps (Xperia blog has those)
Post your Impressions below How do you feel
Update:In NUT's recovery don't enter TeamWinRecovery for me it caused an refuse boot
had to connect in download mode (Without flashing anything)
Opening PhilzTouch recovery and booted from there to system
I find it quite responsive after the initial lag in the settings menu and bad battery life.
What's really annoying me though is that I can't find a tweak which enables expanded desktop properly. Despite KitKat apparently natively supporting expanded desktop mode, Gravity Box for some reason doesn't want to work properly. It worked perfectly in 4.2.2. So I'm hoping someone can make a working version.
Another test
if you use the voice message of FB Messenger your mic gets locked
and you will have to restart your Phone to make it work
i've had kit kat for two days now on my xperia zr no root, locked bootloader. I have no lags, everything works quick just like 4,3. The only issue is that google play services drains battery like crazy (at this very moment is on 87% on battery use ) :/
There is an xposed mod
Called Force imersive mode try it

What Rom? I am thinking of switching ?
Carbon or BeanStack ?
kitkat
I don't see/feel any problems on my C5503
running smooth
Any Major difference in terms of functionality between 4.4 and 4.3 except the Theme Color? If not I'll stick with 4.3 itself:victory:.
Also Please provide the Walkman, Gallery and Movies APP Version in 4.4
I'm kinda surprised with all ur reviews here coz I don't have any lag issues whatsoever.
I'm using a prerooted version of .230 on my C5502.
The phone is responsive, I got a decent antutu score of around 21225 and the battery barely drains.. I had a perfectly flat battery graph for abt 4 n a half hours (of course I wasn't using the phone but that also means it's going into the appropriate power mode effectively). And even when I was using it, I got a decent full day of use out of it.

Carbon is good but Mokee is officially supported and offers much better functions IMO eg. split screen screen recording and awesome handy shortcuts from the recents menu... i am using stock 4.4.2 sony for now but i am already missing Mokee..
in any case if you want to move back to cm/asop/akop i would recommend Mokee but don't get me wrong i still love Carbon Rom.
I think i'm getting 20% less battery time on sony kk

I noticed lag and heating issues at first install but if you leave it for a while it seems like it fixes itself.. I would say it uses about 20% more battery than maybe a cm rom..
At first I thought that being with my own home made rooted version was the cause of the lag. In the z forum I read about wiping data and factory reset and also reboot a couple of times. I have to say that the lag is gone. I like the Kitkat version so far. I even made it deodexed and put z2 app in the app folder even that works. So if you can find the new updated apps it is possible to get them working.

early morning rant
How do I feel?
Honestly, as free beta tester for Google that's how.
I'm not even considering updating to stock KK, yet. Would rather move to some fine working custom ROM like Carbon (need to check first if VPN is working) or CM.
- It used to be, flash stock, one-touch root and voila.
- Now, it's TA backup, BL unlock/relock, flash, recovery, flash, flash, tweak this, mod that, xposed, gpu render, battery drain, oh lag, oh camera is slower, oh more emoticons, OH COME ON!!
I know it's not Sony fault but those hipsters from Google.
With killing external SD support, at the end and in the future, it smells that stock Android will work flawlessly ONLY on Google hardware. That's a pure BS.
You mean Mobiles with no SD card*
Yeah, basically all Nexuses, mob/tab. Good read here
I think it helps to keep product life cycle short. The Apple philosophy.
Okay, after a few days use I'm getting major lag when unlocking the phone. When I input my pattern, the phone responds with the vibrations like 3 seconds later, and THEN it unlocks. After that it's completely fine, and feels a lot snappier than 4.2.2. Does anyone else have the same problem?

Mine is great here
I have pattern and unlock it is very fast. no lag at all.
My phone 5502 is working flawlessly. No lag and no battery drain. didn't want to root so i don't risk loosing my apps and data. i upgrade directly by flashing an ftf file over 4.3 with flashtool and no wipe.

[Q] - Android OS high battery consumption on 4.4.4

Hello.
I've downgraded from 5.1 to 4.4.4 a while back, and I'm quite happy with the phone.
But, sadly, the old bugs from 4.4.4 came back as well.
The one that I'd like to solve, is the battery drain by Android OS.
I've noticed that after updating some apps, it's likely to happen. The only way to solve it, is by clearing the phone's cache (this includes a restart, of course)
It will work ok for some days, and then it would just re appear with no apparent reason.
I don't remember having this issue when I was natively at 4.4.4... That means this was not an issue at the time, or I did something to disarm the issue.
If the second one is the scenario, I don't recall what I did...
Now, I've most of Google Services disabled (no google now, or hello moto)... Only thin I use, is location at battery saving setting.
What else would I need to check?.
Phone does have a good deep sleep time.
Thanks in advance!

Worth upgrading to Marshmallow?

Hi,
I have a Z3 Compact running pre-rooted Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. I got a notification about software update that i can't dismiss. i don't know if i should upgrade or not so force stopped the software update app.
What is your opinion about Marshmallow?
Are there any bugs?
Are there new features added and some features removed?
Is it worth upgrading to Mashmallow or should i keep Lollipop?
sorry i can't upgrade without user reviews
You can dismiss the update notification if you want (disable it).
MM has officially been out for only a few weeks and consequently is still full of bugs and problems.
The threads are full of the cries for help from the MM rom jumpers, oh the pain of being an early adopter.
Give it another month, by then it'll fixed.

Dont update to Mm.. There is some feature that missed..like battery stamina/ultra stamina..and also the battery drain fast..

For me I will stay for not specified time at LP (mainly because of custom kernel).

The next time you see a notification, hold your finger on the notification and the bar will turn black and you will see an information 'i' on the right side, press this.
This will bring up the notification option.
Alternatively, go to settings\apps\scroll to the right until >all apps > 'update centre'
Then - force stop, untick notifications, clear cache/data
You won't get any more notifications about MM and no this won't harm or damage your phone in any way. Your phone will work fine on 5.1 for years and years, it doesn't need MM

If you have root, then go to the market and install ES Explorer
Open it, go to menu, look at the bottom 'tools'.
tick 'root explorer'
Go back to the top of the menu and find "home/device/system/app"
Look for "com.sonyericsson.updatecenter.apk"
Make a copy and save it somewhere, like Downloads.
Then delete the original in system/app.
If there is a problem you can always put the copy back in the folder, otherwise you will never get another update message again:good:

Just like when Sony released 5.0 Lollipop, it was full of bugs and the battery life sucked. It wasn't until 5.1 came out that we finally got a usable ROM. Expect more of the same with MM. Wait until 6.1 is released before upgrading. Especially those who are not rooted. There's no fixes and no turning back for those users.

For me, the most horrible is the delay when opening apps:
Lag manifests on this way: in response to launching app (Dialer let say) "window"/app pops up immediately but is is empty/white and only after a sec/two content shows up (for Dialer recent call list, favourites/frequent contacts, search). Minimizing app and immediately opening again is ok (it is in cache, background, memory), instant content shows up. But if I launch another app after minimizing dialer and then start dialer again - lag in Dialer is there. As if somehow Dialer is killed in background and need to relaunch again from the start (even full relaunch should not take that long anyway). Same as killing it in recent activities. All other stock apps behave this way. It is really annoying to see such a powerfull phone lags in this basic stock apps, as this doesn't happen on previous android versions (4.4.4, 5.0.2 or 5.1.1).

Indeed, I bought an iPad mini, downgraded z3c to KK and life is good.
I use my phone now for what phones are meant to - calling, occasional e-mail, messaging, weather, etc. Battery life is 4..5 days. The car bluetooth shows addressbook again (did not work with LP, MM).
I use power toggles as lock screen widget for bluetooth, wifi, hotspot switch. Lock screen does not require additional swipe. All other things, in reality, work as they work with LP, MM.
For heavy use larger screen is recommended anyway - for the health of your eyes first of all.

Really? What problems did LP & MM bring to the z3c? If it is just better battery then I think I will stay with LP...(unless its twice as good on KK). The camera quality is important for me, are any of them better/worse than others?
Do I just use a 23.0.1.A.5.77 FTF file from here and flash it using Flashtool as the instructions here? I have not rooted or unlocked bootloader, all stock.

There is nothing wrong in MM.
Except for some people who do not use phone 12x7.
Since the concept ROM I was wondering why the battery gets empty even if I do nothing with it. The answer was Doze of course. Yes, I tried several ways for activating aggressive doze, but was not satisfied with these.
Then I decided to go retro and KitKat is all I really need, with its working STAMINA.
For camera I use Sony A6000 and you really can not compare real camera with phone.
If you use your phone heavily, please do not downgrade.
If you have smartwatch, please do not downgrade.
If you feel unsure about flashing, please do not downgrade.
If the warranty is dickbutt in your country - please do not downgrade.
If you still decide to downgrade, then yes, your instructions are correct.
NB! The flash will take long time. Be pacient. It seems to be stuck but it just stays in one place for 5..10 minutes and then everything is ok. I have not measured the exact time, but I was horrified at first flash - it really seemed stuck. Perhaps it is just with my phone.
Scared of MM, really?
Firstly its been out quite some time now, especially if you consider N has just been released to the Nexus range.
Stamina mode and Doze are fantastic, I get 2 days+ with my compact and it's on 24/7.
I also have audited my startup items and background apps to reduce load on then phone which pays dividends.
The initial MM upgrade didn't include Stamina but Sony have since released an update bringing it to the masses.
Your call in the end but don't let scaremongerers cloud your judgement, do some reading, reviews from good sources and make your own minds up.
I did and only issue I had, which I know probably isn't just down to MM, was the emergency dialling issue on lockscreen.
3rd party app cured that for me so now the phone doesn't sit in my pocket making random noises and dialling whoever it pleases anymore!

I've got 4...5 days with KitKat, phone is also on 24/7 (but of course, I do not USE it 24/7). No root.
It's not about scare - the phone is too cheap to be scared, besides there are many new phones to choose from with really good batteries.
However, I do not feel that I should change the phone and I like when I do not have to charge it often.

Perhaps one should take into consideration that the workload of the phones has been increased a lot during last few years. Specially if you have smart devices etc.

[Q] About the encryption, performance and future updates.

Hi All,
Finally got my hands on a new nexus 6 for a bargain price. I've been reading and searching alot in this subforum in order to answer alot of questions i had.
My 6 is upgraded to last ota available with the last security patches, but the phone is encrypted.
Now the question is, is either me that is over-sensible to slowdowns and juddering due to encryption, or the people doens't really notice it that much? It bugs me out.
Granted my 6 is not rooted and unfortunately due to the need of having a working phone in an hour i didn't even explored the possibility of disabling force encrypt, but afaik this would lead me to:
- Do a full wipe to keep encryption off and thus loose all my stuff
- Reinstall everything from scratch
Is that right?
Also if i got right, doing so leads to:
- Impossibility to install OTAS because doing so will re-encrypt my phone and i will need to start from scratch again
- Impossibility to upgrade to Nougat when released, granted it will be encrypted from the start
Is that right?
Also if those saying that encryption performance is almost the same of having none, why i'm having such lags, juddering, pauses between apps, low battery performance and excessive warm when used for long?
Is my phone faulty/my android version or that is what happens when you run an encrypted phone with alot of apps (more than 50 due to work)?
Thanks for those who will take a minute to answer my questions.
Have a good day y'all.

Thank you, actually i have all the stuff to disable the encryption. My point in question is, restoring a backup made in TWRP makes it encrypted again?
Because i want to avoid to reinstall everything, set my apps back from zero and so on.
Also that doesn't quite answer to the question about security patches and OTA's. Do the phone reencrypts itselfs and gets wiped if i force install an OTA or security patch?
Each time i need to do the whole process from scratch?
To change kernel, system and data partitions you need root access. When rooted OTA update will fail.
That's why many N6 users have a custom rom and Twrp-recovery installed.
To avoid hassle and reinstall data and apps.
I am using this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=59561445/
The dev updates the rom mostly before the official OTA .
About encryption: in daily use not noticeable.
Only backup is faster; twice.
Battery. The amoled display is consuming a lot of battery power. To avoid this I am using apps withdark themes and a black background.
So no Gmail but Aquamail.

Thank you for your insight. So i'm better off to a custom rom, updated with encryption off and call it a day?
I don't want to stick to CM or other roms, i would like to stick to official-based ones, to keep the sake of google pureness.
Thanks again.
In a short time the new version Android Nougat will be available for the N6.
I think it's useful to wait. Don't make changes before you updated to Nougat.

Yeah thats my point, the problem is that i can't bear anymore the sluggish performance and the lag, sometimes it slows down to crawl, and based on some benches i did its because the disk access is so high that even alot of cpu power is used. The phone becomes hot when managing 6 mailboxes, 4 social profiles and pages and tons of other activites.
It destroys my battery life and also the performance takes a huge hit.
I guess ill be patient and wait for Nougat to come in a form of custom rom.
Decrypt will not give you a noticeable Bett. performance.
Try the app Advanced Task Manager. To kill background activities.

Well then definitely something is wrong with my phone. It really (sometimes) slows down to something unbearable. I think i'll wait, if things gets complicated, i will do a wipe.
I never experienced such low performance not even on dual core phones. I had to reboot at least once yesterday to get things decent enough.

When a reboot solves the performance issue than try the app Quit Reboot (PhongIT). It has several options for rebooting. .
Another performance issue can be caused by the Google Play Services (searches continuously for updates), or apps working in background. Check the battery use in Settings - Apps - <app name>.
Disable the Google Plays Services temporarely to see possible differences.
When the battery is becoming warm/hot. Could be a bad radio connection. Switch to 2G.
Switch off wifi and bluetooth when you don't need it.
Delete apps you hardly use or disable them in Settings.

thank you, will take care of the things listed.
there are so many great custom roms to try, some cm based, some not, and most if not ALL of them do not have any of the issues you are complaining about.
its a Nexus; root it, and start trying the dozens of custom roms out there..
dont bother decrypting; its a hassle with zero real world benefiits, aside from back up speed, which is meaningless imo
and, all the custom roms pretty much update constantly, so rarely are you more than a few days/week behind any google updates when you use a good rom; the dev's make sure they update/add any real improvements/features really fast.

A few questions about the 6.0.1 update

So I am a bit burned from updating my s5 mini (last time it just updated itself to 5.0, my battery life and performance shrunk and it wouldnt even let me disable bloatware).
Here are my questions:
1. How did the battery life change from 5.0;
2. How did the peformance change from 5.0 (including in-apps, opening them and regular menu opening/scrolling);
3. Is USB-OTG now supported?
1. Battery life has improved a lot, at least for me. It seems that Smart Manager is really doing its job and I'm seeing an improvement in both standby time and SOT. With a few tweaks here and there you can improve the battery life even more.
2. Everything feels smoother, there are some updated animations and transitions that really make the phone feel like new.
3. No, OTG on the S5 Mini has never been and never will be officially supported by Samsung. There is a custom kernel that enables OTG but it most likely affects the water resistance capabilities because of the exposed USB connector and also it's somewhat of a risk to use anything that requires power on a port that was never designed to do that.
One of the few drawbacks I noticed just today is that the auto brightness seems a lot less responsive. For example it's very sunny today and most of the time when pulling the phone out of my pocket the display was still stuck on low brightness. It might just be a conflict with xposed or something else I'm running. All in all I recommend that you update, I skipped the 5.1.1 update as well but for different reasons, 6.0.1 is pretty good.

What model are you using? I'm using the GH800F.
How big is the change? And I've heard that 6.0.1 gives you less performance for more battery. Is that correct?
Sorry, I'm just scared of updating because I don't want to lose all of my data for another let down like 5.1.1 (that literally just enabled itself out of ****ing nowhere and I lost everything).

G800F as well. Like I said, I've noticed a big improvement in battery life. Just make a backup of the important stuff on your phone like contacts and photos and try the 6.0.1 firmware - I recommend you do a clean install via ODIN.

Alright, as long as the performance hasn't decreased (especially in games) then I'll update.
Since I've got most things on my SD card, can I just remove it from my phone, update and put it back in?

Yes, backup everything you don't want to lose to your card, wipe the phone from recovery and install a fresh 6.0.1 firmware with ODIN. If you don't like Marshmallow you can always go back to KitKat.

That's the problem, I can't revert. I tried doing it with 5.1.1 but it just wouldn't let me. I tried multiple times, on multiple PC's with multiple USB wires. (which is why I'm so nervous).
P.s. So if I remove my card, installl 6.0.1 and add it again it'll work?

You should be able to revert, if you can't then there's an issue with something - maybe you haven't updated the Samsung USB drivers?
Yes, it will work. Backup your contacts, messages, photos, videos, anything you want saved on your card and pull it out before you update if you're so nervous.

So I just updated and it's been sitting at "samsung" for the past 5 minutes. Why?

The first boot takes ~15 minutes, be patient. Check out threads about the Marshmallow update you'll find a lot of useful info.

Oh wow. This is just...
It is so sluggish like wtf...
Also be aware that marshmallow ****s up your gps big time. if you're only using it for rough navigation it's fine, but don't expect accuracy as a pedestrian
Hi, i flashed stock MM TW comming from CyanogenMod 13. My battery life seems worse than before with CMod... What should I do?
Before upgrading to MM I did a benchmark test (AnTuTu) on 4.4.2 for comparison, ran the same test on MM and here are the results.
Thanks for the test. A more meaningful one would be to compare Lollipop 5.1 with MM 6.0.1 as most S5 Mini users have Lollipop installed.
I have a question about the MM 6.0.1 update. I flashed the new rom al updatet and seemd to work perfect. Then i noticed, the battery life was very poor. So take a good look at what was draining it. During the day it seemd okay, then when i got home it started rapidly draining again. I managed to figure out that when i am using 4G/LTE everything is fine but when i am home and change to my wifi, my screen turns on every 3 minutes or something and it complety unlocks as wel. because i have my screen time set to 1 minute it stays that way then turns of and about 3 minutes later turns itself on again. When i disable wifi the problem is gone.
Has anyone a idea how to fix this? i live at the border of my country and without wifi its gonna be expesive with roaming costs ....
Thanx in advance for your reply's
Hi, I'm using Germany (DBT) firmware.
I usually use Ultra Power Saving Mode.
Then after turn off Ultra Saving Mode, e-mail application is asking me "admin priviliages confirmation" for each time. (only for Exchange account)
My flashlight don't work in the dark after the update to marshmellow.
Tried another from play store, the same issue
DBT firmware

I had the same issue. Resetting the app worked for me. (btw. I googled that)
"Anwendungsmanager", "Kamera", "Speicher", "Daten löschen" und "Cache leeren".
Since you said you are on the DBT firmware, I assumed you are german.
I'm on 5.1.1 not rooted with g800f. Should I update to MM with Odin first then flash the custom recovery? Thank you!
