Hi guys, Anandtech review for the oneplus 3 mentioned a poor display quality and a low brightness peak. I know most of them were mostly benchmarks and testing so I want to know how the display looks in person. How is the outdoor visibility and sharpness?
PS. Here is the review http://www.anandtech.com/show/10411/the-oneplus-3-review/4

I still have my OnePlus One and I always thought of it being a very bright phone, one of the brightest I've had, but my OP3 is brighter than it... I never heard anyone complain about the OnePlus One's brightness. Also I'm not sure about the screen being physically of poor quality. It looks fine to me, some people say that it needs to be better calibrated, but that's an easy software fix.

The taste of the screens is a bit like design. Some people like oversaturated SAMOLEDs others like more natural colors. OnePlus said that the screen is last gen AMOLED of samsung. therefore ore it is easy to fix the screen with a good kernel which lets you tweak some settings other anandtech got a broken unit with a bad screen. All other revieuwers said that the screen is good, not outstanding but good. Only Anandtech did not like it.
My unit arrive tuesday, maybe I will post something.

It's funny the influence they have, reviews up-to this point have been positive about the display and after Anandtech post theirs, they all start pointing out the issues with the display.
This is precisely why reviews are generally BS.
Thanks guys, you're right. So OP3 be it, can't wait to get it. See you around!

You wont be disappointed
Hi,
I have the OP3 for about 1 week now... Got it at the pop-up in Paris
I don't care about colour calibration, as long as it's not TOO obvious. And IT IS NOT on the OP3. Of course, if you compare it to another display directly, you might prefer that other one. And this is only a software problem, so a kernel with colour settings will allow you to change that !
As for the brightness, I was ready to send it back to One+. In sunlight conditions, if you got a dark screen, it was barely legible. But yesterday, One+ released new display drivers to the developer's community. I know a dev that is registered with One+. So he could make a build of it's ROM with those new drivers... It has to be confirmed in real life, but the increase of brightness seems to be really impressive ! I really thought that this would be a HARDWARE problem. But it seems I was worng, and that a SOFTWARE setting can take care of that
So I'd recommend to stay tuned
Regards.

howerer I think with a bit calibration the screen becomes very good. Of course the res isnt the highest but I think its enough for daily usage.

I have/had a white one... On mine there were no probz at all.
However, i didn´t test it that crazy... No banding and no abnormal pixelation of the blacks atleast.
Atm it´s in for service... Had a complete crash... Maybe that will be the white version faults
^ What about the issue of faint horizontal and vertical lines especially on a white background at minimum / maximum brightness?
I have a white one as well. no problems at all

Have a White G NOTE ... no problems with the display!
^What is the Month of Import?
the white ones suffer from the same problems as the "blue" ones! seen two of them, both had the "classic" faults: one had a very strong tint which got worser on the right side of the screen, the other one was considerably darker and had a yellowish tint over the whole screen! both had the black clipping issue and cut the gamma test at 4 (in standard mode)!
VERY IMPORTANT:
i had a LOT notes so far, all of the screens were faulty to some extent. only 2 out of 14 had a correct (or at least much better) gamma calibration/value, but both of them had other severe problems (one side tint, unevenness)!
also to notice the "blotch errors" you have to display a black picture, go into a complete dark room, let your eyes accommodate and see for yourself!
AS LONG AS YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO COMPARE YOU WONT BE ABLE TO TELL IF YOU HAVE COLOR TINT (only if its really dramatic), I THOUGHT A FEW TIMES MY SCREEN IS NOW REALLY GOOD IN TERMS OF COLORATION, BUT EACH TIME I WAS ABLE TO OUTPERFORM IT DRAMATICALLY WITH AN OTHER DEVICE!!
SO: IF YOU THINK YOUR SCREEN IS FINE: DO NOT COMPARE!!!
otherwise you WILL get worried!!!
just my 2c...
have a white note from movistar in Spain and has the display and camera problems.
+1 to what TML1504
@OP
I think you are looking for a more objective reply rather than a subjective one, I recommend you stop your search for now and probably wait a few batches later.. Maybe 4-5 months from now? If the S2 was a sign of things to improve it really did after 6 months.
I'd figure since new models are set to release, Samsung must have already addressed the problems in the newer Note sooner than it did for the S2.

I was able to check 3 brand new white colored galaxy note from 3 different local shops and they have the video issues the same as mine which the store rep confirmed after we sent the file over and had them test in their storage room, which is my primary concern.
With just a quick glance, I can easily tell those units still show lines, dirty grey renderings and yellowish/greenish bottoms on the screen, this is with an objective result, subjectively the lines are not visible when viewing pictures of anything other then grey or browsing websites with brightness not lower than 2 notches.
I dont think they can or will address this as fast as the common screen issue everyone has is very subjective to the user and only those that are noticeable get returned, some insist on using a higher brightness just to cover it up.
Boycott Samsung 'till Further Notice, LOL
Sad to say, even the latest S2 display is better than the Note. The latest S2 batch corrects a lot of the problems that existed in prior batches. I've seen it myself; thats to easy to appreciate. Too bad Samsung doesn't give a damn about their own flagship products.
EDIT: @EarlZ, not a personal question, question to Samsung, Why would I want to conceal the problems that exist by decreasing the lifespan of my product; raising the display brightness will in turn reduce the lifespan of the AMOLED Screen, lol.
Its been like 3 months or less since it came out from the market so its a given that it will take a while to improve.. give it another 2-3 months more.

On a subjective side, you dont need to do anything special just use the phone how you would normally do and if you dont see anything that bothers you or any image abnormality then simply the issue does not exist on the phone, If your a new buyer just perform the things that you normally do and might do and from there draw your own conclusion, Like others I do not know the exact ratio of good to bad screens/phones but subjectively a majority of the phones should not have any issues on the screen.
If you want to perform something more objective you need to be more open to the methods, there like 3 active threads about it you can easily read up there.
I have a white note for the last 3 days, and due to a few threads about display and other problems, I have been especially looking out for them. but so far I cannot find a single problem with the display or any of the other problems that people have been complaining about.
It was bought from Amazon Germany and shows:
Android 2.3.6
baseband n7000xxla4
kernel 2.6.35.7-n7000xxla4-cl886827 [email protected] #2
build gingerbread.xxla4
If that is of any help to anybody.
But I'm not looking at it with one eye on the screen and one on a spectrometer
just my ol eyes, which to those it looks and works fantastic.
and also my 25 year old son, his eyes should be better than mine also says it looks fantastic to him, and will be getting one soon

Hi everyone, Nexus 4 is my very first Android phone in my life, I used to use Iphone even though I'm not an IFan. Here is my 2cents why I have to sell it.
Screen Display
Yes !! Nexus 4 comes with TRUE IPS LCD, seems like the same thing on LG OPTIMUS G which I saw at BB and I like it very much. But Nexus 4 is worse than Optiomus G's screen (IDK why?). First of all is it's brightness, my eye is get used to iPhone scrren which has white balance > 600 cd/m, Nexus 4 I bielieve is 470 cd/m ( Optimus G is 471 cd/m but idk why it so much brighter)
Second, the color saturation is so bad, comparing the my Iphone 4s beside, I can tell 4s screen is more colorful, better exposition and nicer contrast.
Low white balance hurts my eyes so badly when browsing website even in a bigger screen...
Except those reasons above, Nexus 4 is the good phone.
Good for you. Bad reasons in my opinion, but I digress
I bet everyone cares
cool story bro.
hopefully the other 3 posts you have made on this website have been just as insightful.
LOL, instagram hipster....
All those "problems" were fixed with gamma control. You lost out on a good phone.
Oh well, in the end it's all about what you want. If you want brighter and over saturated colors then go for it. I keep my phone on auto brightness, it's far from the highest brightness and never had a problem with it. The color seems nice, a little more realistic I think rather then over saturated. The iPhone's do have a nice color though from what I've seen but not a huge difference.

^^yah this :good:
i don't know what a cd/m measures, but visually comparing my screen to my wife's iphone there is very little difference (apart from size) ...
If you like saturation and good contrast then try AMOLED devices like the S3, it might not look as good as the iPhone though. YMMV.

As usual for AnandTech reviews, there's a bunch of really useful (and OBJECTIVE) info to be found here. The sections on the display and battery life were particularly interesting in light of some of the horror stories I've seen in these forums, and the camera section shows that most of the problems can be fixed with software. Overall a really good and helpful read.

True that! I was updating my SGS2 the other day and the colours made me feel ill. Consider me a convert!
LCD is just so much easier on my eyes. AMOLED can look beautiful, but every time I switch back to LCD it feels relieving to my eyes... and obviously outdoors AMOLED is nothing compared to LCD.

He did also mention that the black level(too bright) and contrast ratio(low as a result of bright blacks) are disappointing, hence why you hear plenty of people complaining the screen looks "washed out".

That's true. I have an anti-glare screen protector which washes it out even more ha ha. Easy on the eyes in the dark though!
It was interesting that Anandtech's battery tests show quite good battery life, better than most of the other flagships. That lends a lot of hope for all of the people who have experienced mixed or poor battery life.
The camera tests confirmed what I had been observing, that the Nexus 5 actually packs truly excellent camera sensor and lens. The pictures, when the software works right, is really color accurate, really good sharpness across and really good signal & chroma response. But sometimes it takes me many tries to get that picture I want... With the announcement of the software update coming, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it'll complete the package!
Very interesting too the ART testing, which helps explain why the Moto X runs so well.
Very good review, thanks ^^

That makes sense... but other reviews had their rundowns too incl. PhoneArena and GSM Arena via heavy browsing and got MUCH worse results, user tests here too... Same goes with benchmarks. AT is trustworthy, but they seem to have a much better Nexus 5 than everyone else except for slower charging (little over 2,5hrs) to everyone else (under 2hrs). They ARE the tech site to trust but they seem off the rails this time...

I don't think there will be that much variation in different handsets. I think it's more likely Anandtech have a better standardised suite of tests than other sites.

I think blacks are bright only if you have full brightness, and contrast ratio is better if you put the brightness to 30-40 %, the screen is very good.

That had popped into my head too as places such as GSM showed it only getting a max 6hours of wifi browsing vs the 9 or so from Anand.
But then Anand does legitimate PC style testing. Their comparisons use normalized brightness across all phones and you can be sure they receive no incentives from Google as it is much more of an iOS site these days both of which are reasons for the month long wait of the review.
Essentially most places have reviewed the phone "out of the box" with Auto brightness on or or maxed in their testing.

How true, but there are 3 other sites that I came across that gave the screen the mosy accurate screen for Android. Phone Arena, and the other two were post of links to those reviews, but I don't remember the sites names. Most reviews of the phone were given with the phones brightness turned up to the highest settings. I keep my brightness to about 25% and the phone looks great. AnandTech always has unbiased reviews for Tech. The Battery instandby is very good unless you have RF cycling.
9 hours? someone should get them to dump the system and boot image from that phone.

Pixel is good but considerably overpriced. One Plus 3T was 50% cheaper for me.
The pixel has a better camera but who uses a phone for decent photography anyway?
Iphone 7 has no headphone jack and is even more overpriced then the pixel. And a terrible locked down ecosystem which is slowly catching up and copying Android for features.
It really depends what you're looking for. The Pixel has a better camera and display but the 3T has better performance and is a lot cheaper.
My wife has the Pixel. I have the 3T flashed with the Pixel Experience. Side by side compression running the same OS. I like the 3T. It's faster, runs smoother. It's thinner, with a better fingerprint reader. Has a longer battery life and charges faster. Bear in mind the 3T's rooted but most importantly I paid $487 for it and $949 for the Pixel. It's really up to you though, their both good phones.
Pixel is only better at the camera. Same with Iphone. Everything else oneplus3T wins. Overall Oneplus easily takes the cake cause it is half the price.

I don't notice any graininess on mine... You using SRGB?
Heck, I have used mine even for VR and it doesn't look bad at all. When I bought this phone I thought the screen was gona be 'meh' from people's description of pentile displays, but I was super surprised at how good it looks.
Google pixel is honestly better for photo, and remarkably even with the smaller battery on stock it handles pretty damn well with 4-5 hours SOT.
I have both, I used my pixel for 3 weeks rooted, the wife used hers stock the same time frame. She got better battery life than me but I got a snappier and more customized ROM experience (DU).
I went with the one plus 3t for the storage, ram and bigger battery. Along with the screen size so its easier typing again (came from the one plus 2).
The one plus battery life is excellent on stock, 6-7hrs of SOT without any social media messenger apps.
Now that I'm rooted, and have kernel control, I get 7-8hrs of SOT and a lot more snappier between apps and boot.
I like that I also can use multirom like I used to on nearly all my old phones, I love the ability to change my ROM if I should run into an issue or want to use something "different".
The pixel doesn't have that customization ability really, custom ROMs have to include gapps because the partition is quite peculiar on the google pixel too.
The one plus 3t will take you sometime to study and learn about its partition abilities and what recovery/ROM is right for you, but after you learn and set it up on a custom ROM you'll love it!
Just my two cents!

No, I'm not using Srgb. After using a 2k display for over 2 years, going back to a 1080 pentile is not nice. I can clearly see the graininess of the Pixels, given its a pentile display its really only a 800-900 effective resolution and I think it shows. The colours are great but the resolution is a problem.

You need to spend less time focusing on the pixels. TBH, I've had mine for almost a month now and haven't seen any grains. The only disapointment for me is the noise on photos I take (was expecting it to be none, considering that OP presented it with great denoise technology). But the display is perfect. Honestly the display is better than my laptops.
As we all know the AMOLED lotto is real even if the display was given "the highest A+ from DisplayMate". Wanting to keep track to see if anyone is having any of the following issues: Screen uniformity, banding on gray, dark gray looking purple at lower brightness, blotches, black crush, black smear. If there is something I haven't listed feel free to post the issue. While I know some of these issues are inherent of the technology I would like to gather data and see other's experiences thus far.
On my my device my 128 GB white XL exhibits the "dark gray looking purple at lower brightness". I've also added poll options and I look forward to seeing everyone's responses and thank you for taking the time to read and respond!
While it's true any oled can get these problems, it does seem there's a fair amount of complaints about display issues already. I think that's because there LG panels, while we know have improved a lot since the 2 XL but they don't seem to be the same standard as samsung ones .
Something like the OnePlus 7 pro I didn't see any things on Reddit, xda about screen faults

Ifixit's tearodwn actually shows that Samsung actually manufactured the display. From what I know Samsung's own devices don't have 90hz panels yet. So this could be their first batch and the 4 is their guiena pig to iron out any production issues. But some other reports to report that it is LG. I'll poke around Reddit and see what the folks say down there as well. I could of just been the unlucky one and got shafted on the panel lottery. But everything else is working flawless (for now) and I don't really want to play the exchange lotto. Thanks for the response.
I guess I won the lottery. No issues at all. My P3XL had the purple shift at low brightness though.
What I would like to know is, the devices that are being affected, are they the XL or the standard version? The XL has all but been confirmed to be samsung, but we don't know about the regular version

Nice to know and congrats on winning the panel lotto! My 3XL was the opposite and had no purple shift at low brightness.

Some are saying LG and the others are saying Samsung. I'm more inclined to believe it's Samsung since in the teardown it was confirmed. https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Google+Pixel+4+XL+Teardown/127320 Unless they really went with LG and Samsung for both variants? Last year smaller gets the LG while the XL gets Samsung.
Maybe not?
https://www.notebookcheck.net/Who-m...Google-Pixel-4-XL-Samsung-or-LG.439878.0.html hopefully this posts right. Screenshot shows that it has the samsung driver. In the xl at least. Dunno about the standard
https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixe..._pixel_4_display_a_big_step_forward_in_black/ This thread here shows that several people have posted about purple and some even green. Whereas some are saying even at higher brightness levels some grays appear purple and then at other times it appears as normal.

It would be nice if we could get some confirmation on which device this was happening on. So we can at least eliminate one other variable. We still don't know if the panels are the same on both devices. I'm willing to bet that is happening on the smaller version, since no one I know that has received an XL has mentioned it
I guess I won the lottery. None of the above for me so far. I haven't had the phone for even a day though, so the bottom two are possible yet. I checked the others and it's good to go. Very glad to hear they're Sammy displays too. I had the 2xl, and those LG's sucked.

Ok, so there's another XL confirmed working fine. Starting to think there may be some credence to my earlier statement
Mine looks great. No complaints. This thing is a Beast!
Sent from my Pixel 4 XL using Tapatalk
And yet, another XL user. Makes me feel better, since that's what I ordered ?
My 4 XL screen is very nice too. No problems like above. I like it better than the Note 10 plus I just sent back.

If the XL panels are indeed all Sammy then I and probably a few others didn't win the lotto. I also notice some strange behaviors as well. Adaptive EQ off and ambient on and around 20-30% Discord looks fine, whereas the voice recording app still seems dark/purple until about 70%. Then there are times where I open that app and it seems fine. Another user in the reddit thread I linked is also reporting this behavior on various apps. Hopefully more cotinue to speak up if their screen is fine or not!

Well, f*ck. There went that Idea. So, just so we're on the same page, you do have an XL and you are experiencing the screen issue? So much for my theory. Was doing well for awhile

That is correct I have a 128 GB White 4 XL. I've been digging around Reddit and some others users also have the gray appearing purple and others have gray appearing as green at lower brightness on their XL's.
