Ok, I have been dealing with this issue and trouble shooting every which way but loose. I am getting this message every time I try to charge my phone. "Unable to charge your device, make sure you are using a samsung-compatable battery and charger, and that your device is properly connected to the charger." The device is almost 2 years old so it is out of warranty, I called samsung and sent it in at my own expense and they marked it "BER" (Beyond Economical repair) because I had rooted it, I didn't install my own rom I just simply tripped Knox so samsung refused to work on it. Very disappointing. I have now set out to fix it on my own.
OEM Battery: Check
OEM Charger: Check
Properly Plugged in: Check
I have tried multiple different fixes, factory reset didn't work, so I flashed Cyanogen 12.1, Rapture, and Dr. Keton ROMs to see if it was a software issue, NOPE. (P.S. Rapture is my favorite)
So I ordered a wireless charger so see if it was the charger port, NOPE.
Then I ordered a external battery charger and 2 other batteries so I could at least play around with it. SO I have determined it is not the Charger port, Software, or Bad Battery.
2 weeks Prior to this problem occurring the bluetooth flat out quit working. So I am now considering getting a new motherboard but this requires a lot of work I would rather not do if there are any other suggestion at this point I would love to hear them before I pull the trigger and buy a 150$ motherboard, If it honestly comes to that I might just sell the phone for parts, I bought an s7, but I loved my note 4. I would prefer to go back to it cause I like the battery life on the note 4 but LOVE the camera on the s7. Any way, Any Ideals would be fantastic, thanks.
I had an international note 3 that used to say that. I think you may have to use a power source for which that perticular phone was designed for.... just an idea... If i recall i could slowly charge it using a car charger but not a wall charger. I dont know why though i sold it on craigslist before i found the answer.
I also had a similar problem with a regular domestic note 3. Turns out my baby stuck my phone in her mouth and her spit corroded the terminals. So the phone just wouldnt charge. Was a pretty easy fix for like 10 bucks for a whole new charging port. Did you maybe drop your phone and dislocate the flex cable from your board? http://youtu.be/OYBWT1yfilc

I've had the Droid 3 for about 10 days now, and I've been encountering an intermittent problem with charging the phone.
Last night, I plugged in my phone so that it would charge overnight. I made sure that the connections to both the phone and the outlet were firm, and upon plugging it in, my phone's battery icon and lock screen both indicated that it was charging. However, when I woke up this morning, I discovered that the battery had actually continued to discharge overnight. Despite this, the battery icon and lock screen both continued to say that the battery was charging.
I've run into this problem three times this past week. It's entirely possible that I just have a defective device, but I wanted to check and make sure that nobody else was experiencing this issue before taking it back to Verizon.
Check the task manager for programs using lots of cpu. I've found that using google maps nav in the car dock while charging still in fact uses more power than it could charge. Your issue is with the screen off though so check for background apps.

I have had this problem 2 times and I have had the phone for about the same time. I plugged it in at like 40% watched a movie screen never came on till the movie was over I looked at my screen and the battery was at 11%. I was thinking maybe just a bad connection untill I looked at the notification bar and it said it was charging!
I just got my Droid 3 yesterday and last night, the first night of use, it did the same thing. Even if I go into battery usage and look at the graph it'll say charging but the power level will be going down. Very frustrating.
A Verizon rep I spoke with recommended trying a different charger. Sounds reasonable enough, so I'll give that a shot and post back after a few nights of use.
What is the current rating of the chargers you guys are using? (i.e. 850 mA, 1 A, etc). A good rule of thumb is not use anything less than 1 A (1000 mA).
The Motorola-supplied charger is 850mA.

This sounds logical. I had this same problem two phones that happened to have a slide-out keyboard (Shift, G2) and the problem vanished when I used a different charger. I just read today that 100s of people were having this problem today in a news feed.
I was having the issue too, so I used a 2A charger that came with my Huawei tablet...no more issues! (Charge time is about 1.5 hours too!)

I'd be careful about using higher amperage chargers. Don't want to be burning out the charging circuitry. Not saying you will.. just be careful using a charger not designed specifically for the device.
Apparently the new Moto LiPo batteries have another level of overcharge protection. To be safe, I'm going to use an ohm-meter about once a week or so to check the internal contacts (a higher ohm rating would suggest damage).

That's not the one I have, I'm using the USB-output charger from the S7 SLIM, then the Moto supplied USB cable.
Well, it's been a few days, and I haven't experienced the problem since switching to a different charger. Granted, the problem was intermittent, so it's difficult to know for certain if the charger was in fact the issue, but I'm content with this solution.
I've been using my iPad's 5.1V 2.1A charger without issues for a few days. It charges the extended battery from 10% to full in a little over an hour.
That's the dual-core proc for ya. Wonder why the Xoom uses a proprietary charger? dual-core devices nom battery.

No? Dual core is more efficient, it shuts down one of the processors when it's not in use. Dual core means nothing about power efficiency. As a matter of fact, it can have an advantage. Each core uses less power, and combined, they can use less power than a similarly powerful chipset.
I've also run into some issues on my 5 day old Droid 3. It seems to be when disconnected from the charger. I have two regular Moto chargers for this, and tried a 1A HTC charger, which this thing will not charge from.
I tried using different micro USB cables, which didn't help, either. I was trying to move the phone around while charging, and seemed to encounter the issue. Either it's a connector issue for the mUSB, or the (especially short and stiff) charging cables have broken conductors inside, and we're getting a bad batch of cords.
Possibly the D3 has its own issue with charging, but I didn't have a problem until this morning. regular mUSB cords won't work for me at all, as I've tried all I have.
Given this issue, I'm wondering how widespread this is, and if it's something to take the phone back for. I took me a few hours (over 3) of waiting and fiddling with it, but it's at least charging now.
I had this issue to. I used a different charger and cord to charge my phone at night woke up the next day no charge. I went to work pluged in to my wall charger and still no charge. I did a factory reset thinking that might work but it did not. I was going to take it to a verizon store after work so on the way there I pluged in to my car charger an it started to charge so I skipped the store. When I got home I used a different cord and wall charger and it also worked. I did notice that when I plugged in the night before that a small little white light was lit up for a second in between the charging port and hdmi. I know there is a light there but never seen it light up before. So maybe that was behind all of this. Not had a problem sense.

The amperage you see stated PS units has no effect on your phone. That's not how many amps leaves the unit to charge your battery. That's how much the PS unit can handle as a draw. In reality the reason the stock ones are only 850 only means that the manufacture used spec parts for the PS unit. i would think that Motorola's minimum spec was 850 and so that's what the PS units manufacture used.
The higher the number means nothing other than you can bet the 1AMP one is going to out last the 850.
Of course the last statement is highly speculative because i have no idea what the amp rating for the phone is. But what i do know is that all the parts are made in china and you can bet they are not going to overbuild anything.
If the amp range is 675-832, which is the number I would expect then if the phone draws more than 850 for an extended period of time the units internal fuse could blow. Unless of course you purchased a third party unit that has an external fuse. Then you can jsut replace the fuse and not have to worry about going out to buy Chinese garbage. lolz
but then again i bet this Droid 3 is made in china, oh well. I like it anyway

So my otherwise adorable 1 year old somehow got his hands on my Captivate this weekend. When we finally caught him, he was chewing and slobbering on it pretty much right where the USB port is. After getting the phone back out of his grubby little hands, my wife and I took it completely apart and have had the whole works soaking in rice for a day or so.
When I put it back together, it booted just fine, and everything seems to be in working order. Except...when I plug a cable into the USB port, it doesn't charge, and it doesn't connect to my computer for storage mounting/flashing. This would be a bit of a problem.
I've checked for obstructions in the port itself and there don't seem to be any. I can get by for now without charging because my wife and I have the same phone (so we can periodically swap batteries...), but she's leaving town for two weeks at the end of this week. I really don't want to have to buy a new phone...so any ideas on fixing this would be greatly appreciated.

Once the USB port is gone its gone, you would need to get an external wall charger for it and a wifi file browser.
there might be some moister in it yet, but generally the captivates had issues with the USB port just flaking out like that. Its a common problem for this phone, and also has happened to mine.
Or you can just pay ~35$ to get it fixed, look in my sig. They are good!

They fixed mine and it works great. I would also order a new cable from them for like 7 bucks. It is all well worth it!

Update:
It's apparently not *quite* as dead as I thought. It's still not recognizing my computer or telling me that it's charging...but apparently it is actually charging my battery. I plugged it into my computer just to see and left it. It never said that the phone is charging, but when I came back a few minutes later the battery meter had gone up, and it's still doing that fairly consistently.
That's at least good news for now. Even if the USB transfer is dead, I'm still OK as long as I can charge. As long as I don't have to use download mode...
That sounds like a bad cable, just buy one of those first, cheaper and easier to check!

It's nothing to do with the cable. We have four USB cables and two different car chargers. It's the same thing with all of them, and they all work perfectly on my wife's phone.

My first Captivate had a USB port go bad.. I tried 10 different cables and decided for some reason it was a ROM issue and got into download mode.. well let's just say I was buying another Captivate the next day.. lol
I did resurrect it by buying a Captivate with a broken screen on Ebay cheap. Combined the two and it's actually a later production and the GPS works good compared to hardly at all before. M yold screen and new guts.. Now I have a spare phone to try new Roms on without messing up my daily driver.. (Dark Knight 4 atm)
I see broke screen Captivates for $40-80 on Ebay regularly..
My wife also has a captivate with a dead USB port. So I went on amazon and searched for captivate batteries and external charger and found a package that came with 2 extended life batteries and the wall charger that charges one separatly from the phone while you use the other in the phine . Its made by Laza wireless and both batteries and charger was 15.99 and shipped free. Got it in two days and works great and was a whole lot cheaper than a phone.

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread but, I have had the same problem for months also caused by a toddler sucking on the phone and cables. I swap batteries daily. stock/1800/2430 mah. I am curious if anyone knows of a wireless charging option. I know my wii batteries are inductive and it is just the new battery and charger on a stock remote. is there an inductive charger and battery available for cappy? is wireless charging dangerous to the phone if it wasnt designed with it in mind? for that matter is anything available for anyother phones besides the lumia 920 and maybe nexus I think?
cheapest, best option is to get the USB port repaired by mobiletechvideos.com, imho.
I know of no induction solution for captivate that works without a good usb port.
I figured and also thought the Cappy wouldn't be a device supported by a new battery developer when there is so many newer ones out.

I am really disappointed with this. First, I thought the unit was defective, since I was completely unable to charge either my original battery or the one that came with the charger (battery EB595675LU, with Chinese writings added to the language list). I tried different cables and wall sockets and got nothing. The unit does have one LED light, but it never came on. Eventually, I noticed that it would actually work if I shoved the USB cable in really tight. I also learned that a 0.000001-inch move would disconnect the power, even if the cable was still physically connected to the charger. Keep in mind that this happened straight out of the box on the day it arrived. It was brand new.
After discovering that the charger could not be moved at all or it would not charge the battery, I was able to charge the battery that came with it (EB595675LU). It charged OK, but I felt it had less power than the original battery. It drained much faster than the original battery, even when I was home with Wifi on instead of LTE. I think that happened for one of two reasons: (1) the charger didn't completely charge the battery, or (2) the battery is indeed crappy/fake/less powerful than the original one.
At this point, I'm unhappy with the quality of the product. It's brand new and I already have to deal with the problem of the cable moving and disconnecting the power. If this charger is really from Samsung, this quality is unacceptable. That's terrible. But wait! There's more! I used the second battery until it died and tried to charge it in my phone. No problems there, but the charger completely died. Yes, died as in completely dead. And I've charged one single battery on this thing! Now nothing was working. Original battery, second battery, nothing. It just gave out on me. I looked at the battery contacts and noticed that one of them was not aligned with the other two. I touched the crooked one a little bit and it started working again, but still gave me the USB cable problem (disconnecting power). The crooked contact is still crooked as I didn't want to force it and risk breaking the damn thing.
I wanted to buy this charger and the extra battery because I'll be going on a trip soon and didn't want the extra weight and thickness of an extended battery. I chose to get a second standard battery and a separate charger, so I could just swap batteries on the go if needed. I really hope the unit I got is defective. I can't believe Samsung would put out such a crappy product and expect it to sell. I definitely don't want to be in the middle of nowhere on my trip and find out the stupid charger gave out on me at night and my second battery didn't charge. And what's worse is that just about every separate charger I found on eBay/Amazon has terrible reviews due to quality issues.
My goal is to have a reliable/trustworthy separate charger and a second standard battery. I'll be able to maintain my phone's thin profile, have enough power to take lots of pictures, and have no charge downtime other than overnight. Power banks and extended batteries wouldn't work for me in this case. I hope this review has been helpful.
I have the official Samsung battery & charger stand. Bought mine directly from Samsung using a 50% off code from registering the phone. Works as it should and can be moved around. Only cost 20 bucks, too(50% off)

Obviously not this particular one, but something to split the micro usb so we can charge the phone while using the VR, which is my only real issue with it, aside from phone warming up pretty bad.
It probably would be easier to modify headset itself and build charging port into headset or some kind flat cable with microusb on one end and another end could fit betwen battery and phone contacts or maybe someone discovered which are charging pins under back cover (used by charging back)

Agreed, really wish samsung would have added charging, the only real downfall of the VR.
How about the QI mod I've seen people talk about? Seems like a good idea, basically just stick the pad in the front of the visor, aside from health risks from doing this lol, I'm worried that the VR will drain the battery faster than the QI charger will charge, but if anyone has any experience with it, I'm all ears!
Hopefully, the next version of the VR will allow charging.
They need to figure out the overheating before dealing with the charging if its hot already, imagine how much worse it would be while charging! At least we can quick charge!

There were concerns about people strangling themselves while charging the phone with a cable. And the additional heat is probably also a factor.

Well the samsung demo booth had a battery with a cord and a special cover with a hole in it. The cord was mainly for security (the battery screamed when removed from the phone, which the guy setting it up had to do to reboot it occasionally), but I'm pretty sure it also supplied power, since it was the only one in the booth and the thing was running all day long. We might be able to make our own usb-powered battery blank. Not only can we then do external power, but it should also help remove some heat. If there's enough room you could even add a peltier
I know its more money but invest in the official battery kit. If you're serious about using VR it's really the smartest option especially if you're showing off at a party.
I was watching this live YouTube stream and the guy was killing me with his low battery issues. It takes a minute to swap for hours of entertainment. And your depleted battery is charging as well. I bought mine at bestbuy because Samsung is always out of stock.

On my second Note 5 now (had to send the first one in due to problems) and everything was working fine until a couple of days ago. I would notice my phone saying "charging" and then I would have to unplug and plug it back in then the "fast charging" would appear. Now it doesn't ever go into "fast charging" and no matter what I do I always get "charging". I currently have 93% battery and it is telling me 15 minutes until full which seems a lot slower. I tried using my old Note 4 fast charger and get the same issue.
Anyone else with this issue? Wondering if it's the phone or actual charger and if there is anything I can do to get a replacement.
I never paid attention, but I just always figured that the adaptive charger would switch from 5V/2A to 9V/1.67A when it was nearing full charge.

I know this thread is kind of old but in case you havent resolved your issue. I had the same problem with my phone so I called warranty, they sent me a brand new charger with cable and it works fine now. I compared the one they sent as a replacement and the one that came with the phone and the replacement cable is actually a lot thicker and feels way more durable. My guess is Samsung cheaped out and threw in a crappy cable to save cost but it wears down A LOT faster than a durable heavy duty one like the replacement I got. Anyways the new charger is working 100% of the time and has held up for about a week so far. we'll see how much longer this cable last.

I actually called ATT customer service/warranty center. He told me he'd send me a new charger and cable and I needed to send back my old one. Got it in less than 2 days. Sorry for not being more specific. Also fast charging is still going 100% of the time on the new cable.

Thanks. Looks like I'll have to give my provider a call. I can verify that once I switched the cable I have no issues fast charging. I'm not having a good experience with Samsung so far. When you charge almost $1,000 for a product I expect it to be free of defects in every day use. Meanwhile my cable is messed up after only 3 weeks of owning it and the phone has signal problems that require me to cycle airplane mode to get data working. Never had a problem with my Nexus phones or iPhones. Really poor qualify control.
