Hello, I face the same problem. I'm on 6.0.1 firm .575 and suddenly the top of the screen stop responding. I can't drop down the status bar in home screen.
If you do a screen test (service test) it show you that the major part of the top of the screen is not responding. (yup)
But, only in the middle and top left of the screen I can drop down the status bar. In lockscreen the status bar works fine, works fine in landscape mode and when an app is open.
So, I think it's a software problem, not hardware.
Solutions.... you can try to reflash firmware, go back to 5.1.1 or wait to sony's fix.

There have been several threads in the past (here and here) discussing the problem of parts of the screen failing to respond to touch.
I haven't read all the posts, but the conclusion seems to be to return it to Sony.
If you bought your phone in the EU you should have two year warranty, that warranty still applies even if you bought the phone second hand.

unfortunately I unlocked boot loader. I dont think they consider phone is under warranty.

Just flash a stock rom on and send it back, unlocking it doesn't invalidate your warranty, the warranty covers the hardware.
They reflash it with the latest build before they send it back.
Register your phone
Then call Sony service and go through all the instructions on the helpdesk, they will ask you to repair it with PC Companion, just call back and say Companion didn't fix it, then they will give you an address to send the phone to.
The worst thing that will happen is that they will call you and tell you it's going to cost you to repair it, you say you will repair it yourself, they send it back. You've lost nothing but the postage. But they might actually fix it, for nothing.
I sent my cracked screen back to Sony and I had a new screen, for free, within 5 days.

@Didgesteve
Thank you very much for suggestion. will try this tomorrow.

Just bought a Z3 on eBay, apparently a Hong Kong 'grey'. So Sony Australia weren't going to pay for the failed digitiser (top edge, Right Hand edge, and bottom edge). I raised the issue with the vendor, and he said, just bin it, and cancel the payment. So at least I hadn't outlaid anything.
I seriously don't believe this is a software problem. I went through all those hoops in hope - tried changing settings, resetting to factory, repairing the software, etc. to no avail.
Fonebiz are the official repairer here in Australia, so off to Sydney - about $200.00. Awaiting the next step and hoping it isn't a waste of money.

It happens to 90% of z3 compact unit, mine too. I claimed for warranty. They replaced it for free, it's okay now i used it about 3months. But there's a ugly gap between the glass and the frame, about 0.5mm on the top and right.
I heard that it always happened when a sony phone is repaired, causing that gap, thus making it questionably waterproof

four posts up

had the exact same problem as u. initially i concluded it was a software issue as it came up only after flashing another rom. but sony repair told me moisture had somehow seeped in from the top of the headphone jack and cause part of the top screen to become unresponsive. conclusion is to never ever put the phone under the water eventhough this phone is advertised as water resistant.

To upgrade info, my unresponsive screen issue was a hardware problem finally.
I take my device to the Sony SAT and they change all the screen pack due a hardware failure. All For free because I'm still on warranty.
Now my touch works fine again.
Thanks For the advice.

Anyone who cannot swipe down notifications or quick settings, due to a broken digitiser, can follow these instructions:
[emoji7]
Download 'All in one Gestures' app from the playstore.
Go to the 'SWIPE' tab.
Enable.
Under 'Edges' , select 'Top Area'.
Then via the apps settings, choose 'Personalization'.
Now under 'Swipe Area', go into 'Edge Preference.
Make 'Opacity' 0%
With 'Edge Sensitivity' start from 0% and keep moving the slide left until the swipe down works, mine is set at 90px.
'Edge Width' 100%
'Swipe Distance' 0%
Now under 'Touch Feedback' turn off both 'Toast Message' and 'Animation'.
Then turn down 'Vibration Intensity' to '0'
Done.
You now have the screen functioning as normal.

Problem! Please help! G1 goes to sleep and doesn't wake back up.

I don't know what caused this.
I got my G1 today. It worked for probably 2-3 hours perfectly fine.
I had an app freeze (either Barcode Scanner or Lock 2.0) and had to do a full hard reset.
Now, whenever the phones screen darkens or I put it to sleep manually, it WILL NOT come back up.
I have factory reset three times now to try and get this to work.
When the screen is black, all buttons on the phone still light up and so does the LED indicator up top. I had my phone set to use a locking pattern screen at one point during one reset to test out and when the screen went black, I was still able to try and log in by doing my pattern. It unlocked, but still showed nothing on the screen.
Please help!
I've tried:
Turning Wi-Fi off
Turning 3g Off
Disclaimer: Yes, I've searched. I can find other users with the same problem but none of them seem to have a solution.
Phone is NOT ROOTED and has the factory ROM.
Update 1: Update: It only freezes/blacks out when I try to wake the phone from one of the front key buttons.
If I'm sliding to unlock, it seems to be fine.... (but if I've already tried to open from the front it doesnt)
Update 2: If I mash all the buttons in random orders for about a minute or two it seems to come back. Anyone have any idea?
Update 3: I'm thinking this has to be an issue with none of the buttons waking the phone up when closed. If I lock the phone with the "END" key, and then click the front "END" Key again, nothing happens. If I slide the phone open, and click it twice - the phone wakes up.
Update 4: Confirmed update 3. Phone will not unlock via front keys unless it's slid open (or open enough to trigger).
I would really, really appreciate help with this.
Hate to bump this, but I've added some detail on the top and bottom. Have to leave for work, hopefully someone might have an idea by the time I get back.
Well you can try to reload the factory rom or root it and try a custom rom and see if the problem still exist. If it is still happening then it would be a hardware problem and need to be sent in. And yes you will still be covered under warranty with HTC since the phone is still less than a year old.
I had a problem with exactly the same symptoms. It turned out that the SD card was cocked-up so home, core, and some other process would hang trying to read it and the phone would not wake-up the screen any more.
Did you try removing the SD card and seeing if that helps?

Removed the SD card and rebooted the phone.
No change ( still acts the same way ).
Did you factory reset after or was it an instant change?
I don't mind losing data to fix this.

Wouldn't I have to root to reload the factory rom? Is there a rooting tutorial based just on that?

If you use the official update you don't have to have root. There are some links on here. I'll see if I can find it for you.

That should be it, but can't confirm since I'm on my work computer.
Some thoughts--may be useful, or not:
Mine was doing that too, but it was caused because I dunked mine underwater during an urban exploring mission. I dried it out, replaced the LCD screen, and everything worked until it would go to sleep. Then I had to do a variety of button mashes and opening the keyboard to get it to come back to life. Sometimes it just wouldn't come back. The problem grew worse over time.
If wiping and reflashing (no need to use a stock ROM) gets you nowhere, then I would suspect a deeper hardware issue. I see you bought it used, can you contact the seller?
If you want to check for water damage, take out the battery and look at the tiny circular sticker in the battery chamber--if it is not white, it has been water damaged. (And the warranty will not be honored.)
Other Lesson: No urban exploring with G1s.
The link didn't work, btw.

Zero water damage.
That's great news zeabrid! In that case, I agree with an earlier poster--you should be covered by warranty. Wipe and flash a good rooted rom, and if that doesn't work, revert to stock and demand a new phone.

Do you have a link to a guide that teaches how to do this (with the stock rom)? I can only see a few that're spread out.
I'm not entirely sure my phone can boot into safe mode/disk mode, so we'll see about that.
Another update: When I boot into safe mode, the same problem exists.
Edit: Just emailed HTC.
This can officially no longer be considered a software issue.
I just rooted and installed a standard ROM. Same issue.
It happens all the way at boot now, just realized this.
HTC emailed me back and told me to call them directly. Will do that tomorrow.
if I find a solution I'll post it immediately.
Alright, my phone is officially ****ed.
Restored back to the original rom.
New problem now: When I close the screen, the backlight goes out and doesn't come back on. (I can still barely see everything, but there's no light).
Calling HTC today.
Edit: Called T-Mo support. They suggested deleting programs to free up space (I only have 2 downloaded and to reset (already done)
=(
Edit2: Called and placed a RMA with HTC after talking to two of their customer support reps. Thankfully, they forwarded me up the support tier after only about a minute with each person when they realized I had already tried all other steps.
The RMA process was surprisingly easy. I have everything set up, and when I get paid (tomorrow) I'm going to ship the phone out. I was given an estimation of 7-10 business days for full repair and return shipping (which sounds great in my opinion - I've never sent anything in for warranty work before).
I'll update you guys once I hear from their repair team on whether or not I'm going to be covered under warranty (I told them that the phone was a gift to me), and if not what the cost is going to be. Like I said earlier in the thread, all water damage indicators are clear and I have unrooted my phone, so I should be covered hopefully.
Thanks to anyone who posted in this thread.

Yea it defitenly sounds like a hardware issue and needs to be fixed. Glad your getting it fixed and you'll be covered no problem.
Do you know if they charge return shipping if it's covered under warranty? I have to pay my own shipping there, and they had me put a credit card down on file in case I either bail when its already there or they need to charge for repair.

To be honest I don't know the answer but would like to say they would pay for it. But they would have to let you know of the charge before they apply a charge to a credit card.
wow its weird cause im just having a similiar issue now.. in landscape mode.. phone and back light work perfectly. but one i close the screen everything goes virtually blank, everything is running perfectly just the screen light wont turn on..
will try some of your previous methods.. hopefully it works on mine..=/

An confusing issue regarding the infamous phone screen - Presses itself erratically

I want to give some context.
I have owned my Z1 since release on a contract. I have previously had the screen replaced twice and it worked fine afterwards.
However, I had dropped the phone resulting in the top of the screen cracking. Got it replaced by a local phone repair shop.
The result was a new phone screen, a white edge just over half way down the screen might be worth noting. The repair man said it was a warranty sticker on the screen they put in. (Sounds silly)
Anyway, the resultant problem is not exactly like what i've seen on many threads.
My phone now decides to press itself erratically. Usually after swiping and trying to press delete on the keyboard would it start acting up.
My remedy: Hard reset(Didn't work), factory reset(didn't work), upgrade from 4.4 to 5.1(I think, newest software) and to my surprise the issue remains. So after the repair man replacing the screen twice and ensuring that i'd done my best with little to no phone knowledge, I still have this problem.
There's many threads detailing problems, some linking to apk's that are "calibration software", some that say you can change calibration.ini but no helpful replies or expanding info on the threads.
Can anyone tell me if they've had any luck with this or anyone who has knowledge of what I should do next (E.g "there's no fix guy, you'll have to sell it and move on") as i'm starting to assume these screens are very tedious to deal with
Remove the plastic protector and put a tempered glass protector

Dead screen ?

My phone's screen just went black suddenly while i was using the phone last night. Nothing i do will wake the screen up, i tried rebooting by holding the power button, tried power+volume down also to boot into recovery .. no response. However the phone seems to be functioning as i can hear the screen lock sound. I think im stuck on the pin screen (the one to pass the boot-up-encryption). theres some vibration and feedback when i randomly press on the screen too.
The device is running Stock 6.0.1 , unrooted , stock kernel. Has this ever happened to anyone else ? could it be a software issue ?
I believe the LCD panel just went dead ..
Thanks!
Have you hooked it up to a computer and tried to see if it's recognised by ADB?

I had a nexus that had a faulty screen and randomly shut off or something half the screen will glitch out and one day it just stopped working but I could hear the lockscreen sounds. Your best bet would be to send it in for service maybe its a loose connecting or a hardware issue. When mine started acting up it was a loose connecting so if I hit the phone with my hand it would go back to normal and then it stopped working. Its a common issue if you do a google search many people have encountered this
That sounds to me like a return-under-warranty job. If you were in the UK you could quote the Sale of Goods Act, which specifies that an item must be of suitable quality and last a reasonable amount of time, but in my case when I returned my faulty N5 to Google after 18 months they were as good as gold, didn't quibble, simply replaced it with a refurbished one which appeared to me to be indistinguishable from brand new.
Since by definition your phone must be very close to its warranty period, depending on when you got it, I'd start with that. This is the link I used from the UK - maybe different if you're elsewhere, but you should find a link called "Get a call from a hardware specialist":

That makes sense. could be just a loose connector between the LCD panel and the MoBo ..
Problem is i live in Jordan and I got the phone from Dubai. Its still under warranty of the seller (Souq.com ; an online store .. kind of like Amazon of the middle east ), So i have to send my phone to Dubai to fix it. Now i could just go to a local phone repair shop and ask the guy to check the connectors, but im afraid that would void the warranty and not solve the problem ;( .

Well, if you figure out that it is just the screen, you can use this program for basic control with a lot of latency

Touchscreen problem

Hello!
I've got a strange problem with my touchscreen's upper space. The notification bar can't pull down. I made a screen test under service menu, and the screenshot shows the result. I think, my guarantee expired last month, so i must made it at home. First, i try with a hairdryer heated uo top of the phone, the touch foil can push back .. unfortunately without success.
Beause the warranty has expired, eager to take apart the phone, I changed the film is already affecting other devices earlier ,. but this will be the last thing i will do. Before that, are there any "home trick" to solve that problem?
I changed so many firmwares, orfficals and customs. Problem stays the same.
Thanks for the help!
Is hardware problem. There are many threads here that discuss the issue. Only solution is to send your device to Sony repair or replace the digitizer yourself.
I had the same identical issue. First started with the screen getting random touch inputs and then the top area stopped responding. Mine is yet under warranty so sent it to Sony repair. They kept delaying it saying awaiting parts and then after chasing multiple times it was repaired and sent out last Monday. Says case and display as replaced. Yet to set it up.. contemplating between Kitkat or leave it on Marshmallow.
Yep sux, mine touchscreen was bogus too, send it in to be fixed under warranty
I have three z3c on my house two has this problem.
Is a sw trouble can't use screen protector....
Enviado desde mi hilo y dos yogures desde PetaTalk
I came on here to look for this. Happening to mine as well.
The *strange* thing is though when it's on the lock screen the swipe down works fine.
Unlock and starts being temperamental. especially in apps.
Just out warranty by about a week. Great.
I've installed Nova launcher as that lets me open notifications by double tapping the screen. This doesn't work in apps but does on the desktop. Anyone have any idea how much this costs to be repaired?

The reason it works on the lock screen is that the hitbox for the notification bar is larger on the lockscreen. I had the same issue, luckily my phone still had one week of warranty left and SONY replaced the whole phone for me within a week for free. I sent it to official SONY repair centre here in Dublin, Ireland.
Hey Guys. It happens also for me. From 1 hour to another! And actually the fist hardware probem I ever had with Smartphone. Congratz Sony!
Its clearly visible that an complete vertical area from top to bottom is not or only very sporadic accepting the finger movement.
So Service Center is the only possibility? What do you think? tried already complete stock and factory reset.
Actually its logic to send it to Service but if you have comments or maybe the same error please let me (us) know.
Thanks for any comments in advance.
Same thing is happening to mine, almost two years to the day after I bought it. I'm gonna try taking off the screen protector to see if that makes any difference, otherwise it's phone upgrade time (which is not a bad thing). Started a week ago intermittently and now is pretty much permanent. PITA.
Mine is now a week at the service center. I bought it quite late so one year guarantee left for me. Will report what they did... But it is a bit scary how many z3c went defective because of touch screen problems...
I solved the navigation bar problem using Xposed + "Xperia/AOSP NavBar Buttons" module. Just increase navbar height to 150% and it's done. For the notification, bar install Nova Launcher and use the home button action (free) or the swipe down gesture (paid).

Just to give you an final report: They changed my phone and I received an new one...
And the replacement was send right after I asked for ETA. All in all it took three weeks.
So maybe (if you phone is at repair in guarantee) asking and asking would speed up things and the possibility to get a new one is rising...
Now I have a white one (instead of black) but its OK...Feels a bit more like a new phone because of new color Thanks goodness not green or red...
The letter said that chaning to higher one or to another color is part of sonys replacement policies.
Hi again! The story continues. My guarantee expired after one year, but my warranty was good. ( it's 2 year ) I sent my phone to the service center. After two weeks, the service center changed my phone to a brand new xperia x compact.... I hope this will not be wrong with the display. In any case, I was pleasantly surprised to Sony right now.
What seems weird to me is that several people report the same problem at the same time. E.g. it start with random "clicks" on the taskbar and then the touchscreen area of the taskbar stops working. This is happening around the time of 2 years of using the phone. Really weird.
I like the phone but this is just disappointing. After the nougat update fail for the z3 / compact (first claiming that it cannot get nougat because of missing vulkan support which turns out to not being required by the compatibility definition document for nougat) and now the touchscreen fail, I'm pretty sure not going back to Sony for a phone. So sorry.
I have this problem too. The notification bar stopped working in august. And since yesterday the bottom of the screen doesn't work too, so I can't use the on-screen virtual buttons :crying:
I'm afraid this is getting worse and worse.

I've faced this problem too. I buy Nova Launcher to use it's custom swipe down gesture as notification bar issue's workaround.
And i enable Glove mode on Display settings as on-screen virtual buttons issue's workaround. Of course it does not comfy.
As a newbie, i believe this issue caused by the software/MM. Maybe i'll try to revert back to LL or KK or another rom, since z3c would not get nougat update
I can add this to the list of defects I had as well.. Send mine back under warranty about a week ago, hope i'll see it back soon.. Nova Launcher is a good option but the xposes AOSP navbar seems like a better solution, if you have exposed.
I too have this issue with top portion of screen. Any day fixes other than buying new screen (1 month out of warranty)
I've updated to the Z5C and shelved this phone. I picked it up today to check which firmware it has and alas, the touchscreen simply crapped out out of the blue. This is unacceptable. The phone jack also went bad before I switched. I'm really pissed and I don't know what to do. I bought this phone two years ago. Look at the touch draw test to see where it died. How can a touchscreen go bad out of nowhere????
Hi everyone,
I'm facing exactly same problems described in this thread.
I bought my green Z3c in Italy less than 2 years ago and I still have the invoice, but I'm wondering if the warranty is still valid.
I'm wondering because I broke my glass during a trip in Australia and I replace it there, in a store, with original Z3c LCD touchscreen and frame but black colored. (I no longer have the store LCD receipt though)
What do you think? Can I consider my device to be under warranty?
Regards.

Screen Flickering

Hey guys
I have a very strange problem with my Huawei P10
About 2 weeks ago, I noticed that two purple horizontal stripes are appearing in a 3-4sec sequence
Normally, I would immediately ask for a repair, but there's a thing which persecutes me: it only happens when I don't touch the screen for longer than 3-4sec
When there's a continuous contact with the screen (e.g when writing a message) nothing happens, everything is fine and dandy, but whenever I leave the screen for itself for 3 or more seconds (e.g when watching a movie), the stripes start to appear every few seconds, and continue until the screen goes dark or until I touch it again, but after touching it it still takes only a few seconds for the stripes to sequentially flicker again
Here's what I've tried so far (no result):
- safe mode
- factory reset
- cache partition wiping
- cord input deep clean
What may be the reason?
Hey.
It's 100% a board or Display issue. send it for repairs. but i believe maybe you've dropped ur phone. Anyways Huawei knows better.

It's quite complicated
I once dropped it, but even after that, the previous LCD worked fine, there were no errors other than broken glass, so I guess we could exclude a board issue and lean toward your second option, as now that the LCD has been replaced, the fault occurs
What's more, I noticed that if I press the Home Key, and then put my finger in the bottom right corner and hold it, I can still use the whole LCD space without the flickering (I need to press the Home Key first so that it works after I hold my finger in the corner)
It's like the LCD needs to be in contact with your finger all the time to avoid that, which has led me to an idea: would a tempered glass solve that maybe?

I can't really answer for sure but i believe if there's a Huawei service center in your city and you try to fix ur broken huawei, your wasting your time. Whatever solution u apply on ur phone its just gonna be temporary since u hide your problem and not solved it.

I still think (or should I say believe ) that there's a solution which doesn't involve another screen replacement
As for your "temporary solution" mention, I guess if I found one, it wouldn't be temporary, since the fault doesn't progress, it's been the same for a month or so when it first occured, which gives me another reason not to replace the screen and keep looking for other possibilities
I don't need a Huawei service center, I can replace the LCD myself (didn't do that the first time though), but it still involves spending money, whereas I've been looking for unpaid solutions the whole time; getting a new LCD is an extremity

You can ask them to diagnose it and tell you about problem noone makes you pay for a lcd. And after reading your message over and over (And since i repair TVs and everything with electronics inside) i think it also can be your touch or display controller ic. Mostly it could be from touch ic since screen works fine while its in touch with something. But someone has to try your lcd or mb on a healthy one to make sure. which you can't do nothing like that. or do you?
@fengels did You bought original lcd, where can I buy it in good price?
I know this problem from older galaxy series like s5. The fix for this most of the time was disable auto brightness or higher the brightness on auto brightness. Don't know if this is the same problem, but it could be a try. Also don't know which cause this strange problem. Hope it can help you

No, it's a different problem, in the galaxy series the whole screen would flicker, whereas in my P10 it's only 2 horizontal stripes appearing in a 4-5 sec sequence whenever I leave the screen untouched for longer than 5sec
Playing around with the brightness doesn't solve that unfortunately, actually no in-device settings do, as I've tried almost every single option which is screen-related, like switching the eye comfort mode on, but still no result
The main reason why I'm still looking for an unpaid solution is that apart from this one error, the phone is like brand new, everything works fine
ok, so if I understad the problem shows up after you replaced the LCD display? So do you really think is more software related than hardware? I personally would send it to diagnose and repair.

The thing is it didn't show up immediately, I had used the phone for some time with no errors before it first occured
Also, since the new LCD was set, I haven't done any physical damage to it, I've never dropped or sunk the phone
Since you guys mostly advise me to send it, I guess that's what I will have to do

While you were replacing screen, did you turn your device off and disconnect the battery? and i think cleaning all cables coming from LCD and related sockets on motherboard can help. Use thinner or alcohol and if you wanna use thinner be careful so it wouldn't touch anything except golden contacts. Thinner is dangerous and affects ur phone color and plastic parts.

I did turn the device off, but I didn't take the battery off, since it's strongly glued to the phone's body, and I didn't want to damage it
Anyway, could not taking the battery off really be the reason?
As for cleaning, I did it by simply blowing out all the potential dirt, I'm inexperienced in thinner and alcohol cleaning

I am not sure butbon some phones it damages screen. I've seen this on laptops. But anyways its done. Open ur phone and use alcohol. put 2 drops of alcohol on each socket and flat cable connectors and brush it with a soft brush. u don't want to bent any golden contact. It's last thing u can do to fix it without paying for hardware related stuff.

Well, will definitely try it then, but what alcohol? Does it need to be something specific?
