I hope I'm posting in the right place. If not, please accept my apologies and point me in the right direction.
I have been dealing with this problem for about a month. When I attempt to connect to an open wireless network, it fails with the message "IP Configuration Failure".
I have tried to set a static IP address, and doing this appears to solve the problem. Full signal strength, the Connected message under the SSID, but if I attempt to open a website, there is no connectivity.
I'm not rooted, so I understand a lot of patches and troubleshooting options aren't available to me, but if anyone had any insight into this issue,bi would appreciate it.
Oh! Nearly forgot. My wireless data has been dropping fairly frequently as of late. Just for a few, maybe ten seconds at most. I'll display full signal strength, but the little LTE notation will disappear. A few seconds later, I'll get the exclamation point for just a moment, than I'm back in business.
Thanks for your help guys!

Hi all,
I don't get to spend much time with my device or surfing the net for handy little apps so I am forced to ask this probably simple/stupid question to you people in the know.
Is there a way to configure my Vodafone UK v1615 to dynamically swap between "My Work" and "My ISP" network settings so that when I leave my wireless network the device automatically knows to dial up a 3G/HSDPA connection and use that if I open something like IE?
Or should I be configuring this somewhere else, like in the applications themselves (i.e. If WiFi unavailable use 3G)?
If anyone knows of a nice (idiot proof) guide to setting up the connections on a WM6 device that'd do to save you having to type out your own long winded instructions.
Thanks in advance for all the help offered.

Hi Macca,
I've not found a way to do this yet on mine, it is something I think WM6 lacks compared to Symbian. I still find it pretty simple just to hit the Fn key and then OK on the QWERTY keyboard as this switches WiFi on and off.
Something I found useful on the subject of data is the counter software you'll find on the TomTom CD that came with the phone. It gives you daily data usage, really handy for keeping check!
Have a nice evening,

Hi Ed,
thanks for the tip on turning the WiFi on and off, that'll save some time!
However, if I turn WiFi off and continue trying to surf, instead of my device making a 3G data connection it just gives me a "Cannot Connect" error, check your connection settings blah blah.
I'm sure this means I've just got my device configured incorrectly because I cant believe such simple functionality isn't available... (what am I say? This is MS we're talking about!)
Can anyone shed some light on how much configuration should be to allow my phone to switch from WiFi to 3G with out reconfiguration?
Many thanks

I seem to be having the opposite of this problem. My device seems to keep connecting to a 3G network by itself whilst it is already connected to a Wi-fi network. it is getting on my nerves now. I am looking for a way to stop the 3g from coming on at all, or at least ask me before connecting to 3g.
I dont get much data in my monthly plan from vodafone and dont want it getting chewed up whilst i am sitting at home with a wi-fi connection.
Bump.
Can anyone help me with this connection confusion?
Many thanks

Hi,
I would also like to be able to connect to my preferred network everytime I turn on the wireless rather than having to configure it everytime. Additionally, even when I am connected and because the signal is poor, it keeps disconnecting, which requires manual connection all the time. In my laptop, although the signal is poor, it never disconnects, it just grinds it out, and keeps working. Or, my expectations are very high for this phone. Can anyone help?
Thanks from a noob.
I have a Droid 3 running CM9. I have had wi-fi problems with this phone since it was new (and still running 2.3).
I can turn on wi-fi and get it to successfully connect to my work's wi-fi network (which uses PEAP & MSCHAP), but after a couple of minutes the connection will stop passing data and eventually disconnect.
I started logcat to watch what was going on. I see a wpa_supplicant state change message and then another indicating it is authenticating. Next I see an "authentication successful" message, but in the next couple of lines "authentication failed" and then it switches to disconnected. PCs/Macs/etc. on this same network don't seem to have any trouble.
Anyone have any further suggestions on how to troubleshoot this? This phone has been a big disappointment from day 1. Upgrading to ICS improved things quite a bit, but wi-fi is still very unreliable.
Does it work with an open wifi signal like at Starbucks?
Sent from my XT862 using XDA
Haven't tried it on an open network, but it does seem to work better on my home wi-fi that uses WPA2.
I have the same problem with an XT860.
It only ever happens with ONE router i ever use, and it's an 802.11n *draft* router.
On anything else i get solid wifi. Rather open, wep, wpa1, wpa2, or wpa2-enterprise.
PM me a pcap file of your wifi when the error occurs, and ill compare it to mine.
But in the end, the only way to truly fix it, is to replace whatever AP you have issues with. In my case, not even forcing 11g fixes it. nor 11b.
My solution was less elegant though. I just set up a repeater.
Hi all,
Is there anyone here using a Galaxy Note with Idea in Kerala (specifically Trivandrum)?
I am having real trouble connecting to Idea's GPRS net, with the Note insisting that it cannot connect to the network (data only - voice works perfectly).
This happens with both the E (GPRS?) and H (3G?) data indicators. The arrows either remain dark, or the down arrow remains orange (up arrow green). Is this normal?
I have downloaded and installed all the configuration messages sent to me by Idea when I first inserted my SIM.
I currently have four listed access points:
idea_gprs
idea_internet
idea_mobile
idea_mms
No matter which one I select to use, the Note keeps insisting there is a network error.
So I cannot use Google Maps for driving directions, or even Voice Talk in driving mode, because I keep getting the message:
"Cannot connect to server. Please check your network settings and try again" in a dialog box on the Voice Talk screen which takes me to the network settings.
This is especially true in Voice Talk.
Please help.
I've faced this issue a few times on idea kerala network usually between 11 30 pm and 2 am. It's a network issue. you simply have to wait it out , in a few hours it will start working again.
I think idea's apn is "internet" not "idea_internet"... change the settings and try again...
have you tried it with other networks providers? check if 3g is working to make sure this issue is not phone specific.
Thing is, the connectivity has been spotty at best, but since the past couple of days, I have not been able to connect at all.

Samsung Voice Talk
Right.
As far as I can see, Samsung Voice Talk is the only app that regularly has trouble with Idea's GPRS/3G.
Generally service is so poor and connectivity so slow that I initially thought it was a device issue.
However, on further investigation, I find that Voice Talk, while it works perfectly on WiFi, will not do so on GPRS/3G.
Everything else connects with blazing slowness, thanks to Idea.
The one constant is that whenever I try to use Voice Talk under Idea, it immediately throws the error:
"Unable to connect to server. Please check your connection settings and try again."
This dialog box has a button to the connectivity settings menu.
However, no matter what connection I choose out of idea_gprs, idea_internet and idea_mobile, Voice Talk continues to throw the same error.
Any ideas?
I am thinking maybe delete and re-install all the Idea APN's.
Anything else I should/could try?
Thanks in advance for all your help.

I seem to be having pretty severe wifi issues on networks that are composed of a large number of routers (i.e. campus/business networks) where going between routers will result in the phone believing it is connected, but not being able to send/receive data. This is evidenced both by the lack of notifications/apps working, as well as the wifi icon in the quick toggle panel being orange (which indicates no data being sent/recieved, I believe) despite having full signal. This means that without any external indication that anything is wrong, my phone essentially does not work anymore until I turn the wifi off and back on. Previous phones (galaxy nexus, droid) as well as computers did not have this issue on the same network.
Has anyone else noticed this problem, and if so, found any way to get around it other than remembering to reset the wifi power every time you move between areas?
It sounds like there are multiple WAPs all using the same SSID, and Android is not requesting a new IP address when it disconnects from one WAP and connects to another. You could probably work around the issue using Tasker, and have it toggle Wifi off and on again any time Wifi is disconnected. I you go that route I would recommend using the trial version available from the developer's site, or one of the many similar apps that are available in the Play Store for free.
There may be something more to this though. Hopefully someone else has another idea.

I'm having the same issues both out in public and at my home. This issue didn't seem to exist prior to 4.4 update. Now I'm constantly having to toggle my WiFi on and off or toggle airplane mode and also hitting the symbol down at the bottom left on my phone and on my router at the same time. If someone has any information to correct this would be great. Like I said I never had this problem prior to 4.4.

Thanks for the suggestion! One question though: does the wifi actually "disconnect" when there is a handover between two routers of the same network? Is a handover while constantly connected something tasker could detect?

As far as I know, Android doesn't "roam" seamlessly from one AP to another even when the SSIDs are the same. I'm pretty sure Tasker would see this as Wifi being disconnected (albeit briefly). You could then tell Tasker to turn off Wifi for 5 seconds and then turn it back on again.

I finally got around to making a tasker script to do this, and tried it out for a few days, but unfortunately it does not seem to detect the changing between the different routers on my institute network as having the wifi disconnected, and thus doesn't solve the issue. It was a good idea to try though!
I've cross-posted the issue at the link below in hope motorola will see this, but if anyone knows a better way to report this, please let me know.

At work, we have 2 WIFI networks. ????-WIFI and ????-Guest
I have NEVER connected to -Guest, and nobody here even knows what the password is. It's never used.
Randomly, my phone will disconnect from -WIFI and attempt to connect to -Guest, and it fails authentication every time.
I need to go into network settings and forget the network.
Nobody else has this issue.
This has happened on multiple roms, radios, etc.
Majority of the office runs Android. I'm the only one with a Nexus 6.
It's especially aggravating since I use Tasker to control my phones volume when connected to -WIFI
It's an IT company so we're not unfamiliar with technology. We're all out of ideas!
Anyone able to shed some light on this?
How many access points do you have in the office? Unplug each one, one by one, and see if one of them is broadcasting that signal. How close are you to other buildings or offices similar to yours? Could be receiving signal from near by.
There might be some apps in the play store that will give you signal strength readings so you can try and narrow it down to see the general directions of where it's coming from.
I've ran into that same issue at the company I work with and it does get annoying when you have multiple WiFi networks on your WAPs. This issue occurred more frequently when we had sonicpoints managing our WiFi. But when we switched to Ubiquiti WAPs, I still had the issue, but it was less frequent than a everyday thing. I've been looking online to see what can cause this problem because a lot of the people who work for the company I work with have iPhones and they never have this problem. Unfortunately I'm not entirely sure what could be causing this problem and I'm not sure if it's a issue specific to Lollipop, but hopefully this issue does get solved because it's frustrating and I definitely feel your pain on this...

Only one access point, broadcasting 2 SSIDs. It's an Aruba. We are near other offices, but rarely see other networks. Signal is too weak to see them consistently with my phone.
Quick note, both of the SSID's are WPA2, with different keys.
It's our network that this is happening on, just can't figure out WHY it's happening. Doesn't make any sense. I've never even attempted to connect to it.
May be irrelevant but turn off always scan for networks.
I did a full wipe on my phone today, go into WIFI settings, and -Guest had "Saved" under it.
Fresh wipe! Maybe 2 hours on the install. Google Connectivity Services is not installed.
