USB and SD card cover replacement - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a case on my phone, but I noticed recently the flap to the SD card and USB port isn't clicking shut. I mean, it'll click shut, but then it pushes itself out again. It's cheaper for me to replace the door than to get another $20 case that provides cover support to this port.
Which vendors sell the updated port cover that prevents this issue? I found one vendor, here: http://www.witrigs.com/oem-micro-sd-sim-usb-port-cover-flap-for-sony-xperia-z3-compact-black

Sony store sells it. In malaysia, it costs around us$7 for 1 flap

I've had to replace mine about 4 times now. The seal just doesn't cope if you open and close the flap a lot.
I get mine from Amazon. They're normally only a few bucks and come in a lot of different colours.

My z3c has the same issue. The rubber seal detached from the flap itself after some use and the loose piece (the rubber seal) prevented the cover from a complete close.
I blame Sony for not having a better design/quality considered it is the cover of the charging port. IMO, It should be able to sustain usage on a daily basis.
I'm looking into the possibility of gluing the rubber seal in place with rubber cement or contact cement. Replacement flaps cost around $5/pc. Would hate to replace flap every couple months.

I don't care for waterproofness anyway as I don't use it underwated, so I just peeled away the rubber seal from the flap and put the flap back in its place, the replacement costs here around 5€ if I'm right, but as of now, I don't need it.
If you need to use your phone underwater, then buy a replacement part, otherwise it can be used without seal.

You can buy them from eBay or Amazon at about 7 or 8 bucks a piece, of course don't expect it to hold up against water compared to the original one Sony put in it.

Case that fits with car dock?

I used to have a black rubberized one that broke, I bought another one (from what I thought was the same retailer on Amazon) and this one does not fit. Anyone want to recommend one?
The Qmadix case works well and is very cheap on amazon. Only problem is that you may break the little "fingers" on the "ring" part of the case that goes around the screen if you remove it which renders it useless. It happened to me. I was able to warranty it through the retailer since it was within 30 days. I tried to contact Qmadix first though but by the time they got back to me it had already been a week and a half which was putting me too close to the 30 day cut off. So I had warrantied it through the retailer. By the time I paid shipping to me the first time and shipping the broken one back I had almost $20 in the thing.
It'll fit with the extended battery from Motorola also if you leave off the back plate. It will go on with the back plate but the top right corner won't clip all the way on.
Comes with a protective sheath thing too that would be MUCH more useful if the belt clip could be removed without breaking it off..or if it somehow folded flush with the back of the sheath thing.

This may sound stupid, but did you remove the insert from the cardock? It comes with a shim installed to hold a naked phone, but it is removable to hold a cased phone.

Back Cover White Replacement?

Does anyone know where I could get a white back cover like the ones they had on the I/O Nexus 7 Devices? Off eBay or Amazon or wherever.
I'm looking for a replacement of the entire back cover, not something to go over it.
Thanks!
Doubt you'll see many third party rear covers, since the stock cover has all the wireless antennas mounted to it.

Nothing is attached to the back cover and it's not particularly complex. I popped mine off with a credit card - it's just a plastic cover, nothing special. Still, I suspect that the market for replacements would be pretty small, but who knows?

You didn't look very hard... it has at least the NFC antenna in it and if I recall other antenna connections as well. Look for the connectors that connect it to the back of the device.
Good lord, I'm a dumbass. You're right. But it doesn't seem like too much of a stretch to duplicate the antenna placements. I suspect, though, that there just wouldn't be enough demand.
It's like anything else, replacement parts are a narrow and usually expensive market. A replacement cover with the antennas would probably run double the coat of a regular replacement back. And that's once dealers get a demand big enough to warrant making them at all. -Ara

Hehe well it was worth a shot
I'd love to get it to match my white HTC One X on AT&T but I guess not
thanks anyway!
One option would be to "Paint" the cover. With the correct paint types, it should be easy to do... I've no clue what those proper paint types would be, but it would need to be something that covers well, stays on and doesn't impair the use of all the antennas.
My daughter who makes toys might know. I'll ask her tonight.
Use a vinyl paint such as duplicolor or sem. That's how I painted my gnex and how I plan on painting the n7

When I had my Xperia X1, I bought entire replacement housings for $30 on ebay, buttons and metal bits included lol. Cant the actual antenna itself be removed from the back cover and mounted on a new cover?
I dont see why this would be such an impossible idea.
Interesting, in removed my back cover a few times to pull the battery. Didn't see any connections. Guess I didn't look hard enough. What kind of connections? Metal pins I'm assuming

I was wondering if you can hear a noise from the back casing when you hold the tablet from the right side with your fingers?
My white nexus 7 feels empty on that side, the rest of the tablet feels tight on all the other sides.
I appreciate it!

wireless charging mod (s4 ACTIVE)

Heres the backround on what i did to get wireless charging going...
1) get palm coil and touchstone. i bought this on ebay for 10$ (just search touchstone charging kit)
2) carefully remove the coil from the back cover of the palm phone. plastic cover first then the rest.
3) what worked easiest for me was to keep all the coil stuff stuck to the removable plastic piece holding everything together, then you can simply stick it in the back of our active covers. (make sure when moving the magnets all the positive sides are facing towards the dock)
4) Connecting it. I tried doing this a couple different ways and i eventually ended up pulling tiny copper wire out of computer speaker cable and used it like a twist tie on the phone terminals (then small amount of electrical tape to separate them...which worked out fine)*I attempted to do the same on the coil side of the connection but that was a bust so i ended up soldering it.. not my first choice but since its on the palm coil not my active I did it.*
5) you should be all good to go at this point
here are some pics too and of course if you some of mess your phone up...its not my fault

Use a multimeter...if you dont know how, you probably shouldn't attempt this hack and should wait for an aftermarket back plate to come out
Out of curiosity, how strong are these magnets? Am I going to have to make sure that my phone gets nowhere near my credit cards (and other magnetic cards, media, etc.)?

They are fairly strong but I have yet to have any issues with my cards...however I usually keep my phone in a separate pocket
Have you tested the phones waterproof capabilities since you did this mod? I love the idea, want to do it, but im on the fence, as it seems it would make it very easy to make the waterproofing gasket fail with a small wire.... on the other hand, you dont have to take the back off, or open the charging port, so if it doesn't void the waterproofing, it could be even better
Obviously, if any wire or any part of the wireless receiver protrudes over the seal, the water resistance will be compromised, but that's not the only issue.
In the back panel replacement sticker on the back of the S4A, it tells you to press under the camera LED. Pressing there engages the rubber seal. The issue is that any of these non-oem wireless receivers is going to slightly lift the central portion of the back away from the phone. Thus, even if no part of the seal-line is breached, I still wouldn't trust that the seal could engage fully.
Don't get me wrong... I'm going to do something similar, since I'd rather have wireless charging. Still... until an OEM wireless charging backplate comes from Samsung, I'd assume it's an either/or situation. Wireless charging OR water resistance.

I will fix the wire issue by using copper tape. I'm excited to try it...
I am doing this mod tonight and I thought I would share some information.
See below for the information I have gathered:
Yellow lines = Copper tape- as you can tell it gets very cramped around the end because of the gasket. I may need to use a different path or wires like the OP. The important stuff to gather from this is which is positive and which is negative on both the phone and the palm pre touchstone.
Nice idea, curious to see how this works out.
Update
My copper tape has not arrived but I installed everything else. It does appear that the coil makes the rear housing push out which leads me to believe it will not do well to repel water away from the seal during extended use but I would prefer wireless charging
If you plan on using a case I would recommend ordering stronger magnets from supermagnets.com part number Disc - D1046. These should work well with any case and it will fit more snug because they are a lot stronger. I will update with photos once the copper tape is installed and everything is working.
Am I missing something? Why doesn't the Samsung wireless charging kit work or the wireless receiver tags you can get for the S4 so you can use a Qi charger?

The battery door is different. In theory it will work but you would have to figure out a way to gut the back plate and that would be a lot harder than palm's touchstone mod. Or just wait for the active's wireless back plate to be released. This is a lot cheaper IMO $10 vs $30-150
Ya I just realized this. But still do you think the wireless charger receiver tag could work? If you search on Amazon or Ebay "Galaxy S4 wireless charging receiver tag" there's the component which is stuck inside the back cover Samsung is selling. Except it can be bought for $10-20 and most likely can fit in the Active. I don't know because I have the original S4 but just trying to throw out some ideas. In theory if the tag works you can get it for $15 then use any Qi charger and you're good. While not quite as cheap it's only a few bucks more and much easier and looks way better probably. That is if it works of course.

I paid a little more because I wanted to get it this week. The cheaper ones come from China and may take a while. I now need a replacement back for my active, somehow with the palm mod one of my clips doesnt work any longer so under my volume rocker it is propped up. Excited to have wireless charging. Back cover replacing

About a month ago my N4 dropped down and broke the back cover glass, so I ordered this one on ebay from a german store (I live in Italy) for a total amount of €.53,90.
It is ready to be assembled onto the phone and includes NFC antenna and (I think) the Bluetooth one.
Today it is been delivered and I've just replaced.
This is a very easy operation, only require a n 4 torx screwdriver and a plastic pad (a guitar pad is optimal).
With only those tools and a little care everyone can replace it.
First unscrew the two screws on the bottom, then carefully insert the plastic pad between the top chrome frame and the plastic one starting from the bottom of the phone having care of the usb port frame, it is very thin and easy to be broken.
Once disassembled pull away the protective plastic protective stickers from the camera glass and the usb port frame and place on the new cover, having care to pair the two parts with your fingers, put back on the two screws, that's it, all done.
Oh, and I higly recommend to protect your N4 with a bumper case or something else.
That's a pretty expensive auction. I've seen full back covers with NFC go for almost half that price.

I've seen them on ebay and amazon for that price...ebay had international shipping, so its location doesn't play any part in price, imo. And afaik, amazon only ships within North America....so yeah, that one would make sense to have a lower price. But like I said, there are ebay sellers who ship internationally for half that price

Charging flap broke off

Under regular usage, my charging flap broke off. I went to T-Mobile and they said I would have to pay $175 to fix it! Anyone have an idea of how I can get it fixed, or will I just not be waterproof anymore

Did you lose the flap? Or do you still have it? If you have it, did you just rip it out of the hole? Or did the piece that goes between the flap and the whole break? I've caught mine and pulled it out like 3 or 4 times, but I've always been able to get it back in with some effort.

I've seen others have this issue and say that calling Sony got them to send them a free replacement, only for the Z1s (not the Z1) though...

tough luck there mate,
TBH i wouldn't call that a charging port either that would be the micro usb port,
ive used it all but 4 times myself when i first rooted my phone,
u use a maglock charger or use the dock, as the usb port isnt made for everyday use
thats why they put the charging dock in the box when you buy it
it also charges faster through the dock/maglock than via the usb
id just push the port back in and get a maglock charger or use your dock
Not everyone got a free dock with their phone.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Yup. I didn't get a dock with my Z1.
My flap also broke off. I bought the replacement for ~10$. Plastic part is still inside though. Since my glass on the back broke off I called service that is authorised by Sony (so I won't lose warranty for repair) and they put a reasonable price for back glass replacement. 250PLN. It's not crazy high, but isn't a 6pack. I asked how much will cost the replacing of the flap if I provide the replacement part along with the regular cost of the flap replacement and the woman on the phone said that that'll be free.
Ask about the price if you provide a replacement.

I guess I'm getting a dock now. I have tmobile as well and if they charge for this kind of stuff, I'd rather just pay the $10 and get a dock.
I broke my flap as well..feel asleep on the phone while it was charging. Got a replacement from witrigs website.
However, a small piece of plastic was left inside and I used a pin to take it out..wasn't as easy as I thought...the hole is really small...and my pin wasn't as thin as I'd like.
Putting the replacement was easy..used the same pin to just push it in lol

How long did it take you to receive it?
My flap just broke off tonight, I plan to call Sony in the morning to order a replacement.. Just trying to see how long of a wait I'm looking at. My phone looks ugly on that side now, ugh.
I had a piece stuck in there just like you, had my wife get it out with a sewing pin (thanks to your advice).
Lesson learned, once Sony confirms they're sending me a replacement flap I plan to order the official Sony charging doc for the Z1 (everyone I've heard talking about it says it does indeed fit the Z1s) from their site.
