Okay so I'm not one to complain but I just got the note 4 about 5 hours ago and damn does this thing stutter, Like opening apps scrolling through the home screens and stuff is fine but no apps and I mean none run smooth, they all have the micro scrolling stutter and even after switching to art they still do it. And I'm coming from a nexus 4 so this phone shouldn't feel like a high end phone yet perform like a a low end phone I have not rooted but I am deciding to just Duke it out and wait for roms I already received the update that's supposed to help the lag and no difference I mean I kind of new what I was getting my self into when I got it considering it is a Samsung phone but still. Hoping for hyper drive or at least a debloated stock rom soon
I have no lag at all. Have you tried rebooting it and maybe a factory reset?
Even in power saving its pretty smooth i m an old nexus 4-5 user too i wouldnt expect this smoothness from a touchwiz phone
Yes the first thing I did was factory reset then I disabled a bunch of Samsung and Google Apps I didn't use and yea I'm giving it a week if nothing improves I'm swapping it out for another one
Is this snapdragon or exynos ? No lag here aswell (910c)

If you're planning to root, don't just yet. It could be a hardware fault somewhere, because as you said, it still stutters after a factory reset. Once you root, you lose all warranty, even if it turns out to be harware fault.
If you can try visit a store with Note 4 demo units, compare them to yours.
I already tried some days a couple of Note 4. 1 abit lag, stutter lag, but another much smoother. Pls return it and get another one
Run some benchmarks before you return it - if it's hardware reason it should result in lower benchamrk results.
I was messing around with my brother's Note 4 (Snapdragon) and noticed lag as well. Which is funny because I was exploring my friend's S5 and there was absolutely 100% no lag. My brother had a live wallpaper and a bunch of apps running in the background, so I assume that could be the reason. However, there shouldn't be any lag what-so-ever at this point. WTF is going on?
Maybe I'll wait for the Note 5. Lol.
I use exynos version and get no lag at all
My ram free never over 400mb but it still very smooth
Maybe you should try factory reset and make sure dont change your device to art

ok! thanks!
I have the t mobile snapdragon version and yea i will be testing it extensively for a week before I do anything because I mean even some of the display models at best buy were being smoother than mine haha but don't get me wrong guys I love this phone it is amazing I just can't take the stuttering and about the s5 yes that's weird my dad has the s5 and I was comparing it to my note and noticed no lag at all compared to my note :/
Or could it just be that the display is so clear that even the littlest things are noticeable? Lol
Mine is really laggy (snapdragon UK version) it takes 2-3 seconds to load up the open apps menu, 2-3 seconds to then open an app such as facebook, google, menu, gallery etc, I don't play many games but one I use quite often which the phone should smash through is Words with friends, it takes awhile to load and you can literally see it lagging as you move the tiles from one section to another.
You can see it lagging as you scroll through facebook and twitter also.
Got a SA Vodacom Snapdragon one and no lag.
Not really lag, but more like device throttling. Check out this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-sprint/help/camera-video-lagging-t2913392
Mine is N910C (Exynos Edition).
No lag as you mention.
I even test with my friend iPhone 6 Plus, 99% apps opening in Note 4 is ahead faster than iPhone 6 Plus.
The only slight delay is Recent Apps and also sometimes they is a little slight jittering animation.
Overall this Note 4 is pretty smooth. I rate it second smoother animation android after HTC One M8 but for speed, it is the most speedy android phone ever for the moment.
I've had the Moto X for about a month and a half and one thing that's always bothered me is the odd software lag. Let me point out where this is most noticeable:
- Twitter: with images enabled in the news feed, scrolling becomes extremely jittery. this issue is non-existent on the Galaxy S5 (I've tried them side by side and they have the same processor)
- Google Music: terrible experience all around when it comes to animations. when opening the app, the bar on the bottom that pops up with your last played track lags. when selecting your library the app lags when loading album artwork. everything about this app is laggy which is odd for the 801 + 320 chipset.
There are other areas where the phone stutters and I can't figure out why. It's been like this since day 1, and I don't have an excessive amount of apps running in the background (usually 850mb of RAM being used). Opening the app drawer and scrolling between home screens is smooth - it's just the graphics performance in apps can be utter crap. Anyone else notice this? I'm running 4.4.4 btw. I've been thinking of doing a software reset but don't want to go through the hassle. I don't have any out-of-the-ordinary apps installed so I'm baffled as to why an almost stock Android device behaves likes this.
This happens to me as well. For the hardware in the Moto X it sure doesn't perform like it. I actually made a post just like this the other day.
Are you rooted? I'm considering downgrading back to 4.4.4 I cannot stand it. I will probably end up returning the phone for a refund.
I'm honestly surprised to hear this, my moto X has been smoother than my nexus 5. I'd really try the master reset and load up apps a few at a time to see if/when you get lag again.
Something has got to be going on with your phone, the Moto X is hands down the smoothest Android phone I've ever owned which says a lot because I've owned upwards of 20, and most of them were flagships. I also have the N5 at the moment and the X is noticeably smoother when side by side, and that is a major feat considering how insanely smooth the N5 is. I'd do a reset and maybe even a reflash if you can. If that doesn't work, maybe you just got a bad device.
Me too especially chrome both on kitkat and lollipop and only on specific websites. Google books too to be honest but hardly noticeable.
I was surprised to see a bit of jitter considering the high praise it gets.
Now perhaps this is just how it should be, but the z3 compact with same specs felt faster albeit with a smaller res.
I've noticed it too. Can we find a common theme?
Mine is the pure edition with system version 22.21.11 lollipop
Build number LXE22.46-11
Moto additional features turned on
Not modified, not rooted

Just to follow up. I ended up unlocking the boot loader and rooting my phone, in the process essentially factory wiping it. Since then it's been noticibly faster.
I doubt it has anything to do with rooting it and everything to do with resetting it. I believe the OTA update to lollipop out of the box just left too much crap in the cache maybe? Who knows.
Now it's just like the nexus 5 in terms of fluidity
I noticed some terrible lag with the Telus 4.4.4 build. Even with a full reset it just never seemed to live up to the hardware standards. At absolutely everything my Nexus 7 2013 was faster(with both using the ART runtime).
One possibly significant thing I noticed with 4.4.4 is if I would ftp a file via wifi from a local machine the speed was incredibly slow, only 300kB/sec. Wifi however was super fast for nearly anything else, I also ran a flash benchmark test and it was quick. But when ftping and writing to flash it was always slow. I have since updated to the t-mobile lollipop build and the same ftp is now 2600kB/sec and the entire phone is quicker with no lag.
Lollipop runs like crap. Getting constant redraws all the time

That lower res makes all the difference in the world. It has the same SOC as all the current flagships, but because of the 720p display it'll outperform any of them. That's also one of the reasons why it gets such great battery life too. That phone is one seriously awesome piece of tech. And as much as I hate OEM skins, I actually like Sony's.
A lot of phones sometimes get lagged up after an OTA, even the iPhone can and has for ppm and myself. If clearing cache in recovery don't help try a factory reset. Its not a problem with just the moto x.

Clearing cache did not have an effect, but a factory reset seems to have completely alleviated the lag/stuttering issues. Thanks!
Just picked up the Note 5. I came from the iphone6. Needless to say its pretty bad. Many of the games I have tried to play on it have horrible lag. Couple examples would be Big Fish Casino, Clicker Heroes, Order and Chaos, and Hearthstone. I did some testing with my GF's phone, which is the S6 Edge+, her phone does the same thing with clicker heroes. Didn't go much further than that. I still have a few days left to return the phone but I am having trouble believing that both my phone and hers could be defective. My iphone6 didn't stumble a bit on any of these games.
Anyone know if the above games should cause FPS lag? Facebook does a number to it also, but only when trying to make me sync new photos. I may just end up going with the iphone6s because I had zero problems with it the last 2 years.
Thanks

Update the software if there is any updates. Then factory wipe(make sure to backup any data to your computer). Fixes most if not all problems with lag.

Not sure if this is the right approach to this forum. When you say "needless to say" does it mean you were expecting it to be laggy ? Becasue I don't see this to be a common problem. Not even sure why you moved away from your iphone if you were so happy about it.
It would be useful , for anyone to chip in , to know what model and firmware you have.
As for the lag my simple answer is : I have a 920G , rooted with dr Ketan Fware and SkyHigh Kernel, and my N5 is screaming fast with no lag.

I apologize for the bad approach. Spoke out of frustration. The model is SM-920T and the build number is LMY47X.N920TUVS2COKC.
I also factory reset the phone and when I tested clicker heroes again its pretty much locks the phone up if there are too many coins flying along side clicking.

I have already talked to the service rep that sold me the phone. Of course hes like "Eh must be the sim card." He denied that the phone was locking up. I will probably go and get a new one tomorrow before my 14 days are up and they try to stick me with a refurb. I haven't had a rooted android device since the Droid X first came out. Is it a lot safer now days? Just don't wanna try to root a device that is having so many hicupps out of the box.
You don't need to root for great performance. I've been running stock for months and all is very smooth with great battery life.

So do you think I have a dud phone then? I think I will go get a new one anyways. It is probably the best thing to do if I am not happy with the current performance of my phone.
It's not a dud. Also, it's not lag, more like dropping frame rate or an inconsistent frame rate. The note 5 doesn't lag, it just can't produce a consistent frame rate in games I play. That's how android is.
I just got a note 5 as a business phone and I use a 6s plus as a main phone. On most games iOS is way smoother than android. It's because the games developed on iOS for very few devices. Android games on the other hand have to be made to run for many kinds of models. I love my note 5 but I just have to accept the fact that games run smoother on iOS because the game developers are able to optimize their apps. This is easily seen in hearthstone for iOS vs android.
My note 5 is my business phone, the iPhone is for gaming. I know I'm going to get a lot of hate for this but the truth is if you want a smooth gaming experience and can't have both operating systems like I do, just go back to iOS.

Yes. Dropped frame rate in games and in animations (scrolling through lists is the worst experience e.g. Youtube Facebook ...). Rooting and new kernel improves significantly, so it' a software issue, not hardware.

Is there any way to actually go against this and set a certain frame rate? Some guy developed an app that did it for the LG G3 but again they're very different devices so
Yes, there is a utility app from Samsung that allows you to adjust the frame rate and other settings as well. It is called Game Tuner, you can get it on the Google Play store. Enjoy!

So I'm fairly new to the Nexus 6, but I have had a Nexus 5 in the past (More recently coming from a Zenfone 2)..I've noticed that while applications open fairly quick on Marshmallow (Even the system UI is fairly smooth), I get a lot lag and jank in scrolling, and applications that work well on my girlfriend's 5x have poor performance on my 6.
Can anyone else relate to this? Apps like Pintrest, Instagram, Tumblr, Ebay, Amazon all aren't as smooth as they should be, and sometimes web browsing can be horrendous (Almost like a touch delay when scrolling).
I've tried clean wipes, flashed the stock images, tried non-stock roms, different kernels, everything I can think of, but to me, the phone just isnt as smooth as I thought it would be. I get that it's over a year old, but I still expected a bit more.
Am I alone here? Again, the UI itself is fine, its more application based \ scrolling based.
Well, the 6 and 5x have the same GPU, more or less. The 5x GPU is miniaturized, but otherwise identical.
The 5x has a 1920x1080 display, or roughly 2 million pixels.
The 6 has a 2560x1440 display..... 3.7 million pixels.
So, why would you possibly imagine that with the SAME GPU, but nearly TWICE the number of pixels, that the 6 would be able to produce the same graphical performance as the 5x?
*** UNREASONABLE EXPECTATIONS!!!

Have you tried turning off the encryption? When I came from the N5 I noticed the phone was not as smooth as the N5 until I turned the encryption off. Early on it made a big difference as they did not have NEON encryption optimizations enabled. Was that was enabled the difference was small but it is still noticeable to me between haveing the encryption running and not. It is not night and day but I think you will notice it.

I don't think expecting a phone that's a little over a year old, (That was a flagship mind you), to run smoothly is unreasonable. While it's pushing more pixels than the 5x, the processor should be quite similar, along with an extra GB of ram.

I've had my Nexus for 13 months. (Purchased in February 2015). I've rooted and run various ROMs on the device over the last year. Since I have the Next plan with AT&T I've been planning on upgrading soon so a couple weeks ago I went back to unrooted stock. Since then I've been having the same issues you mention. I don't have a 5x to compare to, but it is definitely lagging a lot more than before. Last night I was trying to view something on Amazon, and it just sat there with a white screen. Many times my keyboard stays floating above the homescreen when I press the "home" softkey, or stays floating after I am done typing in Facebook, messenger etc. It just LAGS big time. Also the battery drain has been horrendous. I've been getting so PO'd at it I've been tempted to go get a Note (GASP!) Last night was the last straw I uninstalled swiftkey (been a avid user for years never an issue) and the CM Locker I had installed so I could have a different lock screen photo (since I'm no longer rooted). I'm giving it 24 hours, and if it is still acting up, I am either re-rooting or upgrading (although there's like NOTHING that I like right now for devices).

I just did that. Hopefully that helps with my issue too.
Well, mine is mostly related to the jank when scrolling through applications. The UI, keyboard, ect all works fine. However, The worst is browsing web sites with chrome - I can flick to scroll up and there almost seems to be a second delay sometimes. I've never experienced anything like that before. Also when when using apps such as twitter, amazon, ebay, ect, the scrolling is really bad - Worse than my Zenfone 2.
Again, I've fastboot flash'd the complete stock rom multiple times, tried various kernels\modded roms, ect. They all display this behavior, some worse than others.
I love the size, screen quality, and build of this phone, but for a phone that's last year's Google flagship, I find the performance horrible.
Try turn off animations anyway, you don't have to be rooted, unlocked, yust tap build number 7 times, back to settings/ developer options and put to 0 trazitions, animations,animator..and optionally reboot.

Have to say, I have none of those issues as someone else also stated. If it does the same on stock, it might be hardware related. How does the phone behave in recovery? Is scrolling as normal? What recovery are you using? And when you say you went back to stock, did you do a complete factory reset including deleting all your personal data? If so, you can also try re-locking your bootloader and unlocking it and then flash factory image from Google. That will also erase everything off your device, including personal data.
With thousands of people here on XDA using a Nexus 6, your issue seems to be specific to you and your device. Maybe it is a screen/digitizer issue.
Seemed to me the February build was slow and janky but the the March was back to normal performance for me, op didn't state what build you were on. Might be an option

I'm on the March build. I usually fastboot flash every img myself, then do a factory reset in recovery when trying to get back to stock..This time I just used the Flash-All.bat for the March image and I'll do some testing. I doubt this method is the difference, I'm grasping at straws. I'm semi concerned now if no one else is having these issues...Or maybe my expectations are just too high.
Perhaps I'll try a screen recording app and see if I can capture what I'm running into. It's not all apps, and it's not all the time, but its definitely noticeable.
you're not alone. i recently picked up a ZTE zmax 2 and did a side by side app load speed test. the ZTE zmax 2 loaded up youtube noticeably faster, had thumbnails faster, and played faster when clicking play. the zmax 2 is a midrange ATT phone with Snapdragon 410, 2gb ram, 720p screen. it costs $99 at best buy today..
I've noticed this too between my Nexus 6 (purchased 4/2015) and my wife's Nexus 6 (purchased 10/2015). Hers is noticeably smoother.
I do have occasional screen tearing on mine when I use certain kernel/ROMs, so maybe it's janky hardware.

I know the frustration, for me it is kernel related, but we cant do nothing, we need new device tree by google. I'm really disappointed that g3 has QHD screen with 801 and is smoother than nexus 6 with 805

My wifey has a G3 and I can't agree. When she is using my phone, she is always amazed how fluid it is.

Is your wife g3 on 6.0 marshmellow?
Flashing stock over again really didn't do much for performance. I Did however root it, and increase the GPU clock (Actually set it to performance idles at 300mhz then shoots to 600hmz), and that does seem to help. I can sacrifice battery for better performance in this instance.
Have to agree, at around the end of the day (by 40% battery) my phone slows down. I went pure stock. A quick reboot fixes it. But a tad frustrating
Hello community,i had my nexus 6 for 3 years now, been through much Rom/kernel combos, and i never had this kind of lag that i have with all pie roms.Thing is i dont have much apps, maybe two non google apps and probably stock gapps package,so no bloat. With this kind of apps i never get a single hint of lag at lets say purenexus 7.1.2 and franco. Not a single stutter. And ui looks kinda same because i have pixel launchers.Dont get me wrong i know this device is old now,but if it can run 7.1.2 without lag i didnt expect it to lag this much in all pie roms, and i tryed them all,did all i could, even franco cant help eliminate lag,and i dont have encryption. And lag is serious,it happens when scrolling,i know nexus 6 is not oneplus 6t kind of device, and i know games do lag more now,but lagging in ui is just weird,my redmi 5 dont lag at all on android p custom rom,and redmi 5 is just lame compared to nexus. So my question is,do anyone else get lag?My friend also gets lag only on pie roms on his nexus 6.Is there something they did with pie to older devices,i really wish to find answer.I tryed lineage 16 and its really good,it gives new look to nexus, and thank developers from depth of my heart, but it would be soo good to eliminate this weird lag, just because i know this device is way more capable of running pie than most device that have it now.Weird thing is its sometimes very smooth and next moment it lags like hell,it seems like its running at 15 fps.
If you can help me any sort of way id be very grateful.Viva la nexus 6,my friends, lovers of shamu, best phone ever.:fingers-crossed:

I dont experience lag on Pie personally, buttery smooth for me. If you havent tried it yet, try rebooting your phone in safe mode and once its fully booted, do a boot into normal mode. I have had times with severe lag and this cleared it all up.

May i ask what rom/kernel combo do you run?My nexus lags and gets hot on all pie roms, and that dont happen at nougat or oreo roms.I tend to run phone as lean as podsible,so i dont have apps that i dont need, and i think that shouldnt be a problem, and i see when using phone that sometimes its smooth, and next second it lags when i scroll.I restored to purenexus 7.1.2 and i doesnt have a single hickup on it,battery lasts long, and it doesnt overheat at all.Problem is i like pie more, than nougat or oreo.

I was running Nitrogen for a couple months till 2 days ago and I was using its stock kernel most of that time. I am now running Revolution Remix Pie with Popcorn kernel. No lag at all. I use Apex Launcher and Brave Browser. Mostly use phone for calls , texts , and youtube. No issues at all. I dont use any backups that came from Nougat or Oreo. Try what I suggested.

Ok will try nitrogen, with its stock kernel,to see how it goes, hopefully it will be better than lineage or carbon. Ty,and i will try rr later if nitro lags .

Probably not as Nitrogen uses LineagOS's kernel and device repository

You were right,it was even worse, lagging even on 100% battery, with no additional apps installed other than some basic gapps, this is becoming frustrating for me,maybe its only my device, but it makes me sad that it cant work well with pie.Can it be because its 32bit cpu?I really cant beleive that my nexus 5 on pie works like 200% better, doesnt have a hint of lag.Its kinda unbeleivable.I did all i could time to go back to my old purenexus and franco,at least it was solid and not laggy.Maybe this phone just isnt strong enough .Thank you all,if anyone has any more ideas ill gladly listen to them. And thank you elektroshmock for caring about our device, keep the good work :fingers-crossed:
For how long have you tried each pie rom? I believe that the rom runs some background optimization after install, so I wouldn't judge speed until a few days have passed.
Does it run faster when connected to power?

The lags have to be from your personal phone or setup. Like I said, I dont experience lag because if I did and I thought the Nexus 6 in general was uncapable of running PIE smoothly, I would have replaced it by now. Did you reboot your phone in safe mode and then back in normal mode while using a PIE rom?

Well i cant allow myself to use laggy phone for more than few hours, lets say all nougat roms i tryed ever smoothed out in few minutes, and never had lag or stutter or overheating,it seems to be the last os that worked without any problem on my phone,as oreo did work ok,but not like nougat, nor did i ever get battery life like i get on nougat. But id say oreo was acceptable. On all pie roms except maybe carbon that i used for 3 months,id get all sort of problems, cracking top speaker on 40% battery, shuting off at 35%(battery is not bad as this never happens except on pie),and as i saw pie roms with different kernels,do have strange cpu behavior, shutting of cores, settings not sticking when applied in kernel manager apps,i disabled mpdecision, still same,i lock cpu on max,set governor to performance, gpu governor also performance,i did everything i knew(not to brag but i think i know a lot about this device)but i think my unit which was first batch even tho i bought it later as new,it has some weird electricity, power delivery issuses,it seems like it needs more power(voltage?)then the battery can provide. And this speaker electricity crackle annoys me.When it makes that sound i think its gonna burn or something, because that sort of sound is same like when you hear electrical sparkles and it starts to lag heavily, never ever i got this strange sound on any phone i had.And when using on my turbo charger it gets so hot i think i would be able to fry egg on it without any problem.
@Derrick
I did all you told me,started in safe mode on pie nitrogen, but even in safe mode it lagged heavily,i dont really know what happens with my shamu and on pie i think i got 58 celsius on battery and 87 celsius on cpu i thought thing is gonna burn to ashes.Same second i revert to pure nexus and franco it becames ultra smooth, and ultra cold now i have 23 celsius on battery, and 35 on cpu.Just very weird, because performance on nougat tells me my device is more then acceptable of running everything smoothly, but for some reason pie roms breaks it into half.I think i heard something about opengl(skia)render on pie making it lag.If someone knows how to force old opengl to use it on pie tell me,i think ill try that if i get any information on how to do it.
Thank you for trying to help me guys .

It probably would be good time if it was lagging on nougat, but i can keep it for some more time,i think i wont even sold it like i did with other phones i had(it will stay with me just like my nexus 5),it really is my favourite phone, even tho its not perfect by any means.I thought about possible new phone and i hate new trends of bezeless screens, and especially i hate 18+:9 screen ratios,it makes phone look like tv remote, and there isnt much phones that fall into these categories. And of all the good phones i think the one id get is probably pixel/pixel xl and pixel 2 but every one of them is plagued by its own set of hardware problems, and that makes me unsure about possible purchase.

I wonder what makes Carbon so special, because it's using LineageOS's Kernel and devicetree for shamu.
I don't know which Pie ROM you're using now, but at least LineageOS for shamu doesn't want you to fiddle with kernel settings.
If you choose to do so there is a very high chance your cpu freqs get stuck at very high levels, which causes your devices temperature to rise, which causes thermal deamon to kick in and limit your maximum freqs.
In general no matter how much you think you know about your device before you fiddle with any setting you should ask yourself "why didn't the device maintainer set it in the first place"

Truth be told,i surely know less than you do about this device, and i said it didnt cause me problems with mostly battery. At least thats how i remember it,it gave me less problems for some reason than all other pie roms. But after some time it started doing the same thing like all other roms and that made it unusable so i got back to nougat which im using today even tho i like pie more, design wise.Nougat has much better performance and much better battery life while also not overheating.Id really love that pie works like nougat, but if it isnt its not end of world for me,ill still happilly use shamu on nougat.Maybe lags are only on my device, but i cant find any reason that it happens,i tryed all i potentially know, and its not shame to accept that i dont know everything, thats why i asked people here that probably know way more than i do.I with my minimal knowledge suspect that shamus CPU is culprit here, being 32bit,and maybe new renderer in pie which cause system lag for me and some other guys.My friend lags on stock pie, stock kernel on his pixel 2 xl,thats just not acceptable.Google software+google phone(hardware) and it causes lag on snapdragon 835,its not weird that it lags on 6 year old, ancient 805 which is hardly any stronger that nexus 5 snap 800,but nexus 5 have 1080p and shamu 2k screen, and that probably causes problems for nex6.Being first batch of 2k screen devices i think system on chip that they put in it wasnt ready for what it needed to do.Just my thoughts.
