Storage Issue - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo Q&A, Help & Troublesh

So I have the "32GB" turbo. but when i look at storage it shows that total storage is only 24GB!!?? Do others phones only show as having 24 instead of 32? Where is the other 8GB?
Also, i show twrp as taking up 12GB. I have 2 backups. can they really be 6GB each? I was hoping to be able to have a stock backup, computerfreek backup, and a MM rom. but thats not possible (not enough space). I must be doing something wrong.

That 24 GB that you see is likely the userdata partition. When it says 32 GB, that means 32 GB in total. Some goes to the OS, some goes to system apps, etc. There's some overhead. It's like if you get a computer with a 128 GB SSD, you're only going to get about 88 since Windows takes up about 40 GB. As for the TWRP backups, yes. That's definitely a typical size for a backup. If I were you, I would move your backups off the phone. You can always put them back on while booted in TWRP if you need them.

I recommend you get a OTG flash drive. I have a sandisk 64GB otg drive that I store my backups on. TWRP has an option to backup straight to the OTG drive as long as its connected when you boot up TWRP. The 24GB free is right, The system on stock takes up almost 2 gigs alone, plus the extra userdata, apps, etc. Every phone from every manufacturer has the same thing. you will never get a full 32gb on a 32gb phone. its unrealistic

that makes sense. here is my issue with doing that. i cant find my nandroid backups outside of twrp. if i connect the phone to my pc and open the files they are nowhere to be found. twrp folder is empty, backup folder is empty. the only time i can see them is when im in twrp and click on restore.

That's why I went with 64GB storage for my Quark. With previous 32GB LG Nexus 5, it was like I was in a leaky boat always bailing water to stay afloat. I was always near my limit.

Try navigating to /data/media/0/TWRP using a root browser, and cut and paste the backups to your downloads folder. You should be able to find them there when you plug your phone in.

i have a 32gb moto x (original) and never ran into this problem. thought id be the same with the turbo. thought wrong. live and learn...

found the backup using root explorer (thank you). but after moving them to download folder. when i plug into pc everything in folder shows accept the backup. I never had this issue on previous phones

Weird. Try using the root browser to change the permissions of the folder so that everything is as public as possible. Another option is to try and upload the backups to a cloud drive.

CM7 SD card Users - How do you Backup?

Guys,
I have been using a micro SD based CM7.0.2 installation for quite a while now using verygreen's size agnostic SD image on a 16Gb card. I'm going to try 7.0.3 and an OC kernel but I want a backup since this uSD has become my main setup.
I figured I could image the disk win32diskimager (which is what I wrote the original image with) but unfortunately that tool seems to have a limit of 4Gb on the image file. So, what tool are 16Gb+ uSD card user using to back up your SD card? I want it to image the entire card with all partitions that way I can just backup the entire OS and all my data in one shot.
Any tips or pointers appreciated!

I've used win32diskimager multiple times to do just that with 16GB Sandisk cards. The image file in my case is 4.1G (as most of it is empty space anyway)
Every one of my SDs is archived this way whenever I update a new build/kernel.
I've never had more than 3G of files on any card so I can't speak to what happens if the actual content is 4G or greater.
My SD card is about 13 to 14Gb full.... my image is coming out @ exactly 4.0gb, I figured there might be some compression going on, but > 3 to 1 struck me as a little too good, so I'm not trusting win32diskimager.

What OS/File system are you using? I seem to recall FAT32 having a file size limit of 4GB. That could be what you are running into.

I'll take a look. It's a Windows Vista desktop PC so I'd expect HDDs to be formatted NTFS but I haven't explicitly checked.
EDIT: It's NTFS. So that's not the issue. Chokes on more than one computer.
If you can not back up the whole disk image,
how about backing up just all your data files with the USB connection onto your pc?
It seems that each app has their own directory for their data.
Those directories can be copied directly with the USB connection.
This way you can have a new build anytime and still have all your data available.
I'm not sure I understand the concept of backup. What exactly are we backing up? I was under the impression that you can go from one CM7 release to another without losing anything.
It is true that one can update the system with old data intact.
But somebody may feel better if they have their data saved somewhere so that if something happen to the system, they can have their data available to them.
This is espicially true if you are using one device and if you have all your data on that device.

Or if you want to boot multiple OSes/mods and have a stable fall back point, or if you think a curious kid may pop your card out of your nook and lose it, or if the device is lost/stolen, or the new version of the OS your using is not so good/stable after all (happened to me w/ CM7 nightlies), or there's a hardware failure (SD cards are fragile and have a limited life), etc, etc, etc, etc.
Seriously, if you care about your data even in the slightest only an idiot would rely on everything working perfectly all the time, especially on a removable media, much less one that is tiny, and not ultra durable. Not mention the funky partitioning etc under windows, such that it is only readable when in the device and booted.
Anyway, winimage works but it p*sses me off since it's not free. Still dunno why the other tool chokes, it's gotta be some "32 bit" thing.
I could never get win32diskimager to image my 8gb or 32gb SD card it would die at about 90%...I may go for win image. I understand what you are trying to do. I use my 8gb as a default to boot into cm7 recovery when all else fails. Right now i just use titanium backup for my data.

Do you have to pay to create a virtual image? I downloaed it but cant do much in "test mode"

[Q] Backup Image Strategy

Previously I had a device w/ an external 64 gb SD card and I kept several backups - a image of a fresh and another with apps and tweaks - for a couple of different ROMS. If things got rough I could fall back on a fresh image, or just start over.
Now I have one back up and I feel like that takes up an unreasonable amount of space.
I've purchased a micro USB storage device but it is not recognized in TWRP by the restore command.
What do you all do about backup images, where do you keep them? How many do you have? is there some external storage solution?

I have one. The one I took after upgrading to 4.4.2....before I rooted and installed gravity box. Its the only one I need. So it really isn't much space gone.
I don't see the need for more. Not with the moto x anyway.
Can always transfer it to a PC if you wanted to. Or as many as you want.

Can't see internal storage from within Nexus 6 OS

I can no longer see anything in internal storage today from within the my phone OS. I was on Pure Nexus (5.1.1) and tried to upgrade to purenexus (6) today. After installing the ROM and Elite kernel the phone sat on the start animation for 30mins. At this point I turned it off and booted to recovery and restored from a back to 5.1.1.
I then noticed all my sounds were gone and Titanium backup couldn’t find any backups. When I used ES File Explorer, there was nothing in the internal storage. After a bit of a heart flutter, I went back into recover and I can see the internal storage there so backed it up via Toolkit. So all the files are there, but I can’t actually see anything when I go back into my phone OS. I could for a while see the directories but there were no files or sub directories, now ES File Explorer shows it as being empty.
Any ideas on a quick fix, or should I just do a complete wipe of EVERYTHING and start from scratch. Nothing appears to be have become excrypted.
Had you fix this issue? I've xperia SL with internal storage 27GB, no sdcard slot and i flashed mm aosp and didn't see my internal storage on OS. I can see it in recovery only.

have you checked to make sure that you are looking at the right storage location? sometimes, rarely, androd will create a "new" storage filesystem, but will leave the old one, if you have root you can search the whole filesystem for where its at, then just replace the new filesystem with the old one.

Changing internal SD to portable storage for root

I want to flash Xposed Framework and some other things to my phone, but I figured out that TWRP cannot find my zips in the internal SD card. I think I need to change my internal SD card back to portable storage in order to flash things. I backed up my data (Nandroid) so when I do change my SD card to portable, I can recover everything. Will changing my SD card affect SuperSU or anything on my phone?

I did that few days ago, I rooted 7 days ago , and find out that in MM you can format sd card as internal memory. Wasn't with android for the last 2 years and i am learning every day about new features that i missed.
I formatted sdcard to internal and coudn't flash enything, however if you copy that zip to /data folder you can see it. Huge problem is that nandroid cannot be performed, I usually have 2 backups always and with 5GB of availabole memory, and 2-3 gigs are already taken it is impossible to backup my system which takes around 3 GB of data, even more .
I was thinking about getting USB OTG cable and external flash for nandroid and dflashing things, but still I am looking for some news about TWRP support for internal memory in some new editions.
When I switched back to normal mode ( sdcard as portable storage ) I didn't lost anything, only thing that you want to take care of is that when you are ready to switch back your sdcard as a portable, to perform migrate option and leave phone to do it ( 5 minutes ), to free sdcard and move back data to internal ( if there is a space enoough on internal so that is one more problem to care about.
I also asked this question and got no answers, but I really do like to know how other members manage their free space with this MM stuff, which is good but very limiting so far.

So if I move the zip to the data folder, I can flash? If so, could you show me step by step, because I tried but it wouldn't let me copy or paste anything. If not, I could just backup my photos (all other data not important), redownload the apps from the playstore, then just use link2sd to move the apps to portable SD card.

Wll actually i found that here post #6, you have to use root explorer or similar app.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/internal-storage-twrp-external-sd-card-t3242540
You can save apks with titanium backup and restore it with update.zip option ( to save a lot of time of redownloading apps.
link2sd doesn't work with MM, requires that micro sd is formatted as internal.
There is workaround and I will maybe test this tonight and will let you know if it works.

Thanks, dejson! I figured out that I wasn't using a root explorer, so I downloaded Solid Explorer and moved the zip to data/media and it worked! Thanks a lot for helping me!

Uhm, there is a thank you button also available .
Glad you did it mate, I tested everything with sdcard formatted as internal, but losing option to perform nandroid is not the compromise that I am able to consider.
I was very tired last night and accidentally deleted a lot of things from sdcard which was formatted as internal, I forgot to migrate data, but luckily fresh nandroid backup was taken just before testing and saved to laptop.
I can confirm that after installing apps2sd from playstore, and after that I installed link2sd and boom, the app is working good. This kernel supposedly doesn't have init.d enabled [decypher] so I need to test even more because even when it was working every few minutes i was receiving message from system that sdcard is corrupted and some minor errors.
This idea about first installing apps2sd is something that I found somewhere, and it is not my invention. So I think that after some more testing I week find a way to finally utilize my big sdcard.

Deletet all folders from Zuk Z2 pro (128GB)

hey, I have accidentally deleted all the folders and subfolders from my Zuk Z2 pro Device with my Laptop. The reason was because I had some Trojans, I wanted to remove and no antivirus or security app did help. Now as I rebooted my Device, it stays with the Zuk Booting display and nothing happend unless it restarted and comes back to the same section every 20 minutes or something. What can I do to save my phone (to have the old version of my android just like it was) or to upgrade the android Version to the new one 7.1 . thanks for your helps. Please reply as fast as possible. I really need my phone
Thnaks in advance
Same problema and i have intsalled Custom recovery show NO OS and there are no ugt for install an other rom from utg can't monte. Some help pleass
How did you get trojans on your phone?! And what makes you think that's what it was?
Okay, well, the bad news is you probably trashed all your data and will be setting up a new install as though you had done a factory reset. If /system was mounted as read-write, you probably don't get to go back to your old android just as it was unless you made a nandroid backup (that's the backup/restore option available through TWRP or CWM recoveries) and copied it to your computer before wiping. So, y'know, take a minute, take a deep breath, pour a drink, take a sip, and let that reality sink in. Sorry it happened.
I'm going to assume you're using some version of TWRP for recovery, because that's pretty much all there is for the Z2 Pro. Hopefully the 3.1.0 version from zukfans.eu, although if you got the 3.1.0 from LR.Team on the Chinese site, I'd like a download link. So just to make sure you've got nothing left, restart the phone and in the unlocked bootloader menu, go into recovery instead, go into the "Mount" button and make sure MTP is enabled, and plug into your computer with a good USB 3 type-C cable directly into a motherboard port (the factory cable can actually be kinda sketchy). If you go to This PC, see the "ZUK Z2121" MTP device, and can see "Internal memory" or "Internal storage" directory inside of that, then your MTP drivers are working correctly... and if internal memory is empty, then it's empty.
Gone.
Sorry. Take another sip and reflect on doing a backup (System, Data, Boot, and probably Persist in case you're planning on jumping between android 6 & 7) and copying that backup folder to your computer in-between each attempt to fiddle with things or start trying to sideload hacked PoGo apps from Russian sites.
Anyway, if that's truly the case and you've wiped out all the internal memory, you'll be reinstalling from scratch and you're not going to get all your stuff back.
You should probably plan to go to Advanced Wipe and clear out System, Data, Cache, Dalvik, and Boot. Don't touch Persist. Then make a new folder on the phone's internal memory (Installers or something), copy over a new ROM + Gapps, install it, reboot once into recovery just so TWRP can secure itself, then reboot into system and sign back in and start reloading all your contacts & apps & accounts & stuff.
If you have a backup, then copy it to your computer before anything else, take a backup of the current state, then restore the old backup.
In order for OTG (if that's what "ugt" is supposed to mean) to work, the adapter or thumb drive needs to actually support USB-OTG mode, and the memory card/drive needs to be 32GB or less, and formatted FAT32 (no exFAT, no 64+ gig thumb drives, boo). Go ahead and reformat it, then create a folder and copy the ROM+Gapps you want to install to it, plug it into the phone while in TWRP, go into the "mount" button and check the "USB-OTG" box, then go to Install, Select Storage, and choose "USB-OTG". Then you should be able to see the folder and install zips from the USB-OTG drive.
Good luck, and remember to take a backup and copy it to your computer for safe keeping when things are working, before you start trying to do weird things. Now finish that drink.
Memory is in Read-only Mode.

thanks for your kind reply, but unfortanetly the phone Memory ,as it get known with my computer is in Read only Mode, so I CAN NOT CHANGE ANYTHING ON IT. I can not even copy or create any folder in it. I am getting really mad on it because there is not even a proper Zuk costumer serrvice in europe for this phone and as I have contacted the chinese-Site zuk.com for support, they could also not help me.
