With possible tiered data plans looming on Verizon, I'm now in the market for a smartphone. I want to get in with unlimited data. I'm in a 4G area, and want a 4G phone. I'm trying to decide which to get. Currently I'm leaning toward the Charge.
From those who actually own the LG Revolution, would you get it again, or would you go with something else? Are you happy with the dev work, or other phones are better? Sell me, one way or the other.
Based on the number of threads in the development forum, I'd venture a guess that the Charge has a lot more dev work.
Any other thoughts?
I am in the same boat as you and have read your other post. Not sure which way I will go yet, but I'm leaning towards the Charge. Although, I am hoping the Bionic comes out before the 6th of July (when the new pricing kicks off). I like the DX2, but would like 4G (even though it's not available in my area) and a Front Facing Camera (FFC). Tough choice.

I don't think I'd get another phone. After debinging this phone, etc, I am pretty happy with it. We are limited on developers right now, but the one that we have makes solid products, so what I have learned from this experience (witnessing a plethora of developers), is that it's not always the quantity of developers, but the attention to detail the developer you have has.
There are some things to consider for the negatives:
1. Battery life is OK, but like all smart phones these days, it isn't great.
2. On most standard charges (including the one this came with) charge time is crazy. I use HTC chargers now (1amp) and it will take about 4 hours to fully charge.
3. This phone takes some work to get things done - Expect to push recovery yourself using detailed instructions, and expect to do a little work to get a ROM installed (not really that hard). Things are getting better all the time.
4. The charge probably has a bigger development community because it came without the Bing crap and was open source.
If you want to compare it to the charge in a positive light:
1. I have heard the charge doesn't have notification lights.
2. IMHO, kind of ugly.
3. The Revo as it sits is pretty much completely unlocked and ready for devs to mess with it.
Someone did a complete right up on comparisons here: http://androidforums.com/lg-revolution/344309-lg-revolution-vs-charge-vs-incredible-2-a.html
First thing I noticed he complained about on the charge was 384Megs of RAM. You will find this with all 512M phones because of how it allocates the memory to processes prior to boot (video, etc).
I would say that out of the 4g phones out now i would still choose the revo.. i had the thunderbolt it was really not a bad device. I ran it with the leaked alpha GB software and was worlds better than the firmware that came loaded even better than the update they sent out a month or so after it was released. I havent owned the charge mainly for two reasons: 1. i think it's terribly ugly, and 2. i just dont that i could ever bring myself to own a samsung.. they feel so cheap to me. I know that it can be sped up, but the two i played with (one store demo, the other a vzw rep's personal phone) both were jumpy, laggy whatever ya wanna call it.. i also despise the touchwiz UI it looks like kiddie version of the iphone with all those stupid squares on the icons. Now to the revo. Battery isnt a lot better than the tbolt but seems a tad better. The screen isnt "showroom" impressive but seems a bit more true, not so blown out like the samsung. I also think the phone looks better than eiether the charge or the tbolt. Now a couple things i dont like about the revo.. LG removes the android power widget, and i use that widget all the time. So i either have to use LG home and their power widget or download a 3rd party app... also i really am not a big fan of the little cover over the charging port, especially since with 4G u charge a lot.. the one covering the hdmi port is ok with me as that wont get used to often. And it does seem like it takes a bit longer than normal to fully charge the battery. Overall the LG will most likley tide me over till the bionic comes out which is all i am really looking for at this point.

I'm 100% positive i'd buy the revo again.
For a 4G phone from current options... Revo
Honestly the INC2 would be my first choice but I wanted a 4G phone when it comes to my area in October.
If i could do it again i wouldn't buy verizon at all. Other carries just have much nicer options for phones.
I regret getting a Revolution. The bad part was that I traded the Thunderbolt in for it so I'm stuck with it. Currently trying to trade if for a Thunderbolt on Craigslist. While the Thunderbolt by itself isnt the best, but it has custom roms that fix its problems.
The Revolution seems to be backwards in some areas compared to other Androids that I have owned or used.

Did you install the Debloated ROM or do it yourself? I installed the ROM and swapped the ADW launcher with Go Launcher. The stock home system is gone and the whole phone is a lot snappier. I'm keeping it.

You should really load the ROM that Cubed has put together. It is really nice. gets rid of the crap and puts Google back where it belongs. The capacitive buttons are now linked to Google. No Bing to be found.
There are still a few LG widgets i'm freezing sine they don't work in Go Launcher and I think I can find suitable replacements.
I'm not familiar with launcher pro plus, but I like Go Launcher a lot. Didn't care for ADW launcher.
I'll have to check out launcher pro plus to see how it compares.
Only thing I'm not keen on about the phone is the battery life, but it is 4G and those are some of the things we have to live with. These are a lot more powerful than my old BB Storm.
It's like having a computer in the palm of your hand.
I really think I'd get the Thunderbolt if I did it over again. They are basically the same phone but the 4G on the bolt is way faster and it has incredible dev support. Although we have cubed developing which is awesome!
just saw a video of the charge running gingerbread -_-...

Switch to ADW, or something and poof, the LG Home and that big crap icons at the bottom are gone
I am currently using Go Launcher and LOVE it, sooo much faster, cooler looking, and 100% customizable home screens

Launcher Pro runs like a 1 legged dog on my phone. It was so laggy and slow... which really shocked me as it ran fine on my other old phone. I have been using adw ex and it runs fast and smooth. I also get better battery with adwex than I do with LG home.

Okay guys, I need some advice from all of you great folks here on XDA, as Im a daily surfer of this great forum & I value your opinions! Im trying to decide on a phone here & after TMOs CES flop, it looks like theres no hope or point in waiting on TMO to put out one I truley crave! I currently own the galaxy s2 or what tmo considers a gs2 anyway, & while I do like it, I still feel that theres a little left to be desired. My wife has the HTC Amaze, & again its a good phone, but Im tired of GOOD, I want GREAT! I want a phone that is PHENOMINAL, & you just LOVE to use it! Im as big an Android Fan as you can be, & honestly I guess I am realizing that most of the phones that make it to TMO are just watered down, & it seems to be the case for alot of the US phones. Im considering the Galaxy Nexus, because it is Google & pure, and the options available once its rooted since I am a rom flashing maniac, but hardware wise, it doesnt seem much better than my hercules. Im also considering the Galaxy Note, wich I do love, but is it worth it to pay for a hotspot, & have to carry the xtra weight of a hotspot as well, just for respectable data speeds? I know an unlocked device is the route I have to go, but besides the galaxy nexus, are there any other phones out there that I wouldnt have to pay the xtra every month for hotspot just to get decent data, & could be compatible with TMOs 3G or 4G speeds with the 1700 band? Man Guys, I would spend up to $1000 to have that device that Im gona fall in love with! I really wish TMO would add the note or the nexus to the line up. I would love some advice, opinions, ideas, & knowledge from you Guys here on my favorite forum! I also cant leave TMO right now as Im 3 months into another 2yr contract with 5 lines, & Im doing my best to stay loyal as Im a customer of 9yrs and they have always been pretty good to me, not to mention my rate plans are GREAT, & they would probably triple if I went any where else! Thanks in advance!

I think it's safe to say the community for the T-mobile Note is just about as empty as a legacy device from the old days. I don't really see much other then the Jedi Leader ICS and CM10 nightlies so i'm guessing people that aren't jumping up to the Note2 are sticking with some they consider stable.
So What are you running?
I'm running ParanoidAndroid 2.51. One of these days i need to sit down and learn how to properly build from source so I can keep myself somewhat amused.
I've been running liquid smooth rc9 for the past week and its been running nicely. I used paranoid also and really liked it, just not a big fan of the dual panel menu.
I've been messing around trying to learn to develop from source. I've been working on a kernel, but have been getting some errors when I go to compile. I haven't been able to figured out what I'm doing wrong yet.

I was just looking at this device... why so few using? My guess is that most people are on the phone rental plans so they opt to Note II or SGS3 or ???? on the Ebay market this one is still pulling a strong price . what is the base/stock rom for it anyway?

there is surely a lack of love for the Note but why? its specs are very close to the overpriced note 2...
they sell fairly well [usa] on ebay - go fast, and price at about half the price of a clean note 2 ...
I don't know if I can call $325 a BARGAIN per se, but its competitive with other thingies in that range
I'm running with pan droid 2.5.6 on my T-Mobile note one...

can someone check my assumption here: I need T-mo WIFI calling app to work with no issues - I'm dependent on it.
I am assuming that an AT&T version [unlocked] is a no-go, 'cause at&t really wants to defeat wifi so it will not have the app.
correct?
i'm 0 for 2 on unlocked at&t phone attempts with T-mo .... its enough of a challenge just finding ANY phone, including those T-mo pushes, that will handle wifi calling app smoothly.
luckily i have had several that do so
I just switched from Jedi 4 to Liquid Smooth rc 9. No complaints so far. Enjoying the liquid splasher options. I did take Gnote from the Paranoid rom and install it on this one though as I couldn't find an Snote substitute that I liked anywhere else.
Hi OP! I have an att note that I got by reupping my son's line- he hates smartphones and just recently started using a keyboard phone for easier texting- he's 26. I have had this phone for a year, didn't use it for the 1st 4 months since tmobile didn't work so well till the blaze modem was set up for this phone.
I tried the stock t-mo rom when it was available after tmobile released their note. Didn't work so well- had heat issues. So have been running ptmr3's padawan for i717 with blaze modem- on the monthly 4g plan for 6 months or so. Love that!
2 days ago I tried the tmo roms again. Stock still problematic, but tried ptmr3's Jedi4 with the new mixed modem of tmo and n7005. It's working really well with great data speeds- 10-14 mbps DL, and 1-3 mbps UL. Battery seems to be doing well and no heat issues with this modem.
I would love to get the note 2, but can't justify the $$ and no way do I want a contract with anybody. So, here I am with my note that I still love, and I flip back and forth between my GNex for a smaller phone when needed.
For the person who wants to flash the att roms, I read yesterday that all roms between the att and tmo notes are interchangeable with no flash problems.
I did it with Jedi 4 with no other prep. I wiped padawan rom and data, flashed Jedi, and then started testing modems after it settled in. So far, so good. There are still Note lovers here
I just upgraded to the note from my sgs4g. Currently I am running PA but I like to switch between that and CM 10. Don't be surprised if this phone gets a sudden push of users since Tmobile is offering it as a cheep upgrade phone, also Samsung's in general are safer to root and load custom roms on. Even though this is not a popular phone, it is gaining in ownership. ALSO I like how you can load all the 717(att note) roms if you want.

to me its a great device. I may start a Bloatware guide thread...it could help some. I would hope all of you pitch in.
hate to sound ignorant, but which is "PA" ?
for now I am sticking with leaning down the stocker, and looking out for a Jellybean push from samsung.
mine is pretty fast as it is with about half a dozen or more uninstallations of stock bloat. i have plenty of memory space.
I got to the Note 1 via Nexus 7. make sense? I was using a LG and, like you, SGS4G which we still have [need to REALLY skinny that one down], so I get the n7. after rooting and playing around with various mods and configs, I was thinking: I'd like to have this 720p but integrated with the handset since I can't figure out where the big tablet fits in with my habits... plus I wanted sd storage, wifi calling, etc. so the logical answer: Note! reading the specs, I don't see that the very hot-selling Note 2 [with apparently auto-cracking screens...] is worth nearly double what I paid for my note 1.
Pa is paranoid android.

Well Shane is correct it does stand for Paranoid Android. I agree that this phone is a bargain now. It us one of the few phones you can get for less then $400 with out an upgrade. Granted I used my upgrade. I used the upgrade, because the old galaxy s 4g was two years old she needs a new battery. It was time to pass her down to my son. So down graded her from JB (it wasn't quite stable yet) to ICS and gave her to the boy. I was able to catch this at Costco for $50 (with an upgrade) So I jumped on it.

I do the $30 monthly with t-mobile and rely on wifi calling a lot since my home office is in a dead zone. switching to the "unlimited" data plan [100min talk...i'm not a big talker] in a couple days - got the $30 window on that. [btw... the data allowance on the 30 talk-oriented monthly is very small, but I'm not sure they can calibrate it right via wifi because I have used data heavily but never come close to running over, and a lot of times when I spot-check it the meter shows Zero]
this is a good handset. keep it lean and its as fast as any non-gaming person can use.
and I see far fewer screen breakage reports on this one [knock on wood]. there are a lot of busted note 2's on ebay hunting a buyer.
I am thinking of upgrading from my S4, which gets middle of the raod battery life, like 4.5h On Screen time. I am looking for something that gets 6h On Screen time minimum. I am thinking either the Note 3 or One M8. I want better battery life #1, and a good screen for outdoor use #2, and just an overall speedier / faster phone. Which phone gives better battery life ? A rooted and ROM'd new One M8 ? Or a ROM'd Note 3 ?
But I am disappointed with the U.S. carriers + Samsung for being Nazis and locking this Note 3 down so tight, that sucks to see. I have my S4 rooted, with all the good tweaks that come with rooting, like removing all the garbage bloatware, and apps like AdAway, Greenify, etc... And Wanam Xposed.
Thank you.
P.S. I played with an S5 at the store, and really liked the revised looking Touchwiz, looks much much better flat now, and the Phone and Contacts apps seemed way faster, and just different in a good way, compared to my S4. Would love to see the Note 3 with the S5 .apk's.
I get 3 or 4 days battery life on my Note 3 I'm rooted,,,Htc is inferior to the Note,,,Go with the Note 3 .

Why do people even bother to say they get insane battery life, when they know they do not!? To get that kind of battery life, you must only send a few texts per day, and maybe make a call or two. I'd love to see those battery stats.
REAL usage only lets you get close to a day, and even less. Anything streaming, you can count on definitely less than a day. Just sayin!
battery life is pretty good. if you intend of get the note 3, get it on tmobile so its easier to flash roms and such. but keep in mind, the note 4 is around the corner. that being said, the m8 just came out. so yeah.

Hi all!
I've been an S3 user for a little over 1.5 years; been a native of the Sprint forums (although my Sprint S3 is flashed to Page Plus).
Now that VZW has made their prepaid plan a lot more competitive and included LTE, I'm planning on making the jump, and thinking of picking up an G2 in the process.
I've loved my S3 - I run a rooted stock 4.4.2 rom, debloated all the samsung & sprint crap via titanium, and a custom kernel that's been tweaked to work well with my phone - and it functions perfectly - still fast, great battery life for a ~2 year old phone, etc. Been around android for some time now (first phone was the OG incredible), so am perfectly comfortable tweaking and such, however I don't want to spend too much time doing so.
I'm reading about the G2 and curious if it's worth the upgrade. I've heard several people online (mainly on the vzw forums) complain about the verizon 4.4.2 update causing issues with the phone. If I root, debloat, and run a quality custom kernel, am I likely to have issues? Is this even possible?
I've been looking at the S4 too, but it appears verizon has locked down the phone so much it's not worth it. Also there appear to be a ton of issues with their kitkat update.
I only use my phone for web browsing, calendaring email, texting, and talking - no gaming. I'm mainly looking forward to having the nicer screen and camera, and the likely possibility of a few more Android updates (which the S3 is unlikely to get). Honestly I'd love to have the next Nexus or something that runs closer to stock, but don't have the luxury to wait around for that phone (and I want to stay on vzw's network).
I've been doing some reading around your forum and am just curious as to your thoughts on the jump S3 -> vzw G2. Pros & cons?
Thanks much,
-Dirk

I've read people having issues after the update as well, but I've had none. Came from a Sammy phone as well, and well, I'm not going back. Absolutely LOVE this phone. Super fast, amazing screen, and excellent battery.
I'm running stock kitkat, debloated, with Simple kernel and have zero complaints. There are two kernels that steal the show (imo): Simple (for those who just want a custom kernel that doesn't need tinkering with) and dorimanx (which has all the options you could ask for).
Should you switch? H*ll ya you should. But that's just my opinion. You won't be disappointed.

GPS seems to be phone specific. I haven't had GPS issues with stock or custom kernel.
The heating thing is a bit trickier. Both kernels have overheating throttle, which does protect the phone. The only time I feel heat is playing Sonic (yes, sonic the hedgehog, I had a genesis back in the day, what can I say), so if you don't game you won't experience it. If I'm not playing, zero heat. Since you're not a custom rom guy, don't have to worry about it there either.
The other issue that seems to be common is a dead spot where the sim card is all the way across the phone. I've never had it (nor has my wife) because I think it has to do with heat (don't quote me on that).
So that's my general idea when it comes to this phone. I really believe you'll be happy you switched.

Yeah, there's a chance I'll install a custom rom but I generally like things clean and neat (debloated of course) so would likely just stick with stock + a custom kernel.
What do you mean by dead spot? On the touch screen?

Correct. But there doesn't seem to be a real correlation with anything (at least what I've read). Some just suspect heat is the culprit.
The dead spot goes clear across. Warranty it if it happens. But it seems fairly rare.
All the "issues" are hardware related, so a warranty takes care of it. Like any phone, there's always something. But if you're like me and treat the phone like a baby (handle with care) you shouldn't have a single issue.
I did the custom rom thing on my old phone but got tired of things not quite being right. Personally, I feel lg did an excellent job on the stock stuff. De-bloat and all is just fine!

Dead spots on the screen which is part of the screen is bad...Plus there is an ongoing issue of the dreaded black lines. I have yet have any issues with the g2 and i traded my s5 for it. Yes I did a trade from a s5 to the g2. Its the best phone in my book still out on market. it was funny the sale rep looked at me funny and just wanted to laugh and say why. He claims its the best phone but I dont think so. the g2 looks great all around, fast as heck, and is flashable.
I went from s3 to g2 you can totally tell the difference in power.I havhad the black lines issue after flashing but return to stock and sent to replacement and has been fin ever since.but I had the option of upgrading to g3 or st and after using the g2 over the s3 I'm on board with LG I used to only own Samsung's since the fascinate but after using them and playing with them I think LG does good what I need it to do Samsung has been doing the gimmicky stuff lately and it's kinda made me meh about them.and I think having the Qhd screen is trying to future proof me so when I upgrade in another 2 years I'll still be happy and not dreading not having it
