Ambient Display time out/speed settings?

Is there a way to get Ambient Display to flash the notifications more rapidly or for a longer period of time? It is really easy to miss them at work. I know it doesn't look like it can be done stock but could a file be modified with root kind of like how we can get tethering on Sprint working by editing the build prop and another file?

Ambient display settings

There are no setting like that. Your best bet is to disable Ambient Display and install a 3rd party like Active Display

Ambient display isn't available on stock rom. Ambient display is designed for AMOLED display, the M7 is equipped with a LCD display. On an amoled display, each pixel can be turned on individually, so a black area on the screen won't consume battery power. On a LCD display, pixels can't be turned on individually so the entire display is turned on. So ambient display isn't battery friendly for LCD phone hence why its disabled on stock rom. Irc, there is a flashable zip somewhere on the forum the enable it, otherwise its enabled on some custom roms.

The xposed module Xtended Settings in play store can enable ambient display on M7. Been using it since it was released and works perfectly (other than the fact that it's not as effective as on an AMOLED screen)

Disable Light Sensor

Is there any good solution to disable that annoying ambient light sensor?
Turning off Adaptive and Bravia Engine does nothing, that sensor still switches my screen backlight on a whim.
I don't use Xposed and also do not want to. Best would be a solution such that I can use the brightness slider in the noticiation bar to control the display brightness. Other apps with widgets and what not are unhandy. :/
Dude you should try this
