Does anyone know if the Tmobile Note 7 will have or come with a built in FM radio? I read on the general specs that it did not, but the specs for the Galaxy Edge 7 also said that it did not have one either and from what I remember reading, it was added later through a software update. John Legere said all future Tmo devices would support this feature but I have not heard anything at all. Any info on this?

Not for T-Mobile version of Galaxy Note 7.
Internet based radio FM only with apps.
If it doesn't then that Samsung and not T-Mobile. If you already have it did you try and install a FM tuner app? That's what you had to do with the S7/E and it didn't support it initially.

The phone is not even out yet. I am considering buying it if it has an unlocked bootloader. It would be nice to have this feature.

All QUALCOMM chips have FM built in, carriers disable it by default because it's free and doesn't use data = no money for them. An update to the S7 Edge unlocked the FM capabilities. The Note 7 obviously has the same chipset.
That's not how it works. There is a licensing cost which in the US manufacturers charge for. Carriers don't pick it up and why it is disabled. If Samsung made it a standard feature for example and paid those fees then Verizon couldn't have it removed for example. Google search Blackberry, Bluetooth, and Verizon as another example. If manufacturers made it an option then by carriers not picking it up then it isn't on the carriers as far as the law is concerned. The manufacturer removed the feature.
HTC is an example of not paying the licensing fees and why the HTC 10 doesn't have FM no matter where you buy it from. It's more than just the radio. There is also how the radios are pinned to the logic board.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
The radio apps that use the Internet will work. The reason is that these apps are using the Internet to provide the service.
The real question is: Does the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 have a FM radio chip for International versions? If so: Can we activate that chip with T-Mobile version and be able to use with an app to enjoy FM radio with that chip?
-
They do not use the internet to provide service. They use the internet for the advanced features like the thumbnails for example, but the FM radio itself works. If it worked just on the internet alone it wouldn't require the FM radio being active.
As far as the international version. If it is there it is there. If not then it's up to Samsung, and you have to ask them.

Then I was wrong. That is cool that Samsung keep the FM chip. I will tryout NextRadio when I get my Note 7.
No worry about it. The only thing manufacturers did was not add their own App and allow users to decide what they want to use. I like that. I haven't found a tuner app I like yet. Next is the best so far I found.

the t-mo note 7 does indeed have fm radio. use next radio. you can tune stations with a headset plugged in. i havn't tryed any other tuners though as it's a pain finding one that isn't internet based.
Been using it all afternoon. It indeed is enabled and works. I do hate the fact you have to have a headphone cord plugged in as antenna, but I do have a broken pair with a "short" stub cable and route the audio to my BT headphones.
Ugly, but effective.

If you hate google you can always use a Bing, Yahoo or even altavista. If you think google controls you too much you should also consider getting a WP, Bada, IOS or WEBOS devices you know? I stick with my google devices, they rock .
At the end, its always the carriers fault. I am a dev and I have like 10 devices between phones and tablets, and buying devices that are bound to a carrier is always a pain, specially in the US. That is why now I am buying international versions of the phones.

FYI I bought my device unlocked and not through AT&T. My 9020a is unlocked and runs CM9. You can blame the carriers all you want, but Google decided that Wallet would be a carrier aligned thing. They could've said No. Wallet could've easily been non carrier aligned and like GPS it should be a free utility.
I find Google just at fault as the US carriers here. Let us use phone features as is.
And yes NFC has been horribly pushed by Google. They did a terrible rollout a year ago and even now I barely see anyone using it considering you're forced to use a Citi card, and using it on your Google PrePaid card is quite useless IMO.
TechCrunch wrote a great article about NFC: http://techcrunch.com/2012/06/30/nfc-is-great-but-mobile-payments-solve-a-problem-that-doesnt-exist/
Anyway, I may be unhappy with Google here, but don't tell me to jump to Bing or some other irrelevant alternative. You can't expect everyone to be 100% happy. How many iOS users have zero complaints?

The Google Wallet app is now updated to facilitate all the major credit cards; I got an earlier version from the link on this post. Can I get the latest from the forum like I did the former? I can't get it from the play store, and the update button in the GW settings on my Nexus s i9020a is not highlighting to allow for the present update. Or perhaps there is another way. I have version 1.1-R57v5. There is a version 1.1-r67-v12, which I believe may be the one before the 8/1/2012 update. Much thanks and appreciation for the support.

Using GrooveIP and attaching it to my Google Voice account, coupled with a bluetooth headset like you typically have paired with phones, I often DO use my Nexus 7 as a phone. :good:
I've made quite a few calls on my N7 over wifi with GrooveIP. Looks funny when I hold it up to my head though.
I tried using GrooveIP earlier and it crashed the first time I tried calling my N7, but worked fine the next time.
Is it possible to change the ringtone in use though?

But you don't NEED a BT headset/earpiece right? That's just so others can't hear the person on the other end correct? I ask because I purchased Groove IP a while back to make calls on an old HTC Hero that had no active cell service, so I may try it on the N7 someday when I'm bored. That way I can call my girlfriend without my wife seeing her number on our cell phone bill.
Could you really imagine standing in a busy street holding it to your ear?

The Nexus 7 doesn't support an external mic...it has been confirmed in another thread I believe.
Edit: External hardware mic isn't supported. Apparently a few people have been able to get a bluetooth headset mic to work but only with GrooveIP. It sounds like a driver issue with bluetooth. I definitely doesn't work with my Nexus 7 and Skype.

Talkatone vs Grooveip?
Hello!
Yesterday evening i managed to connect my external UMTS-Stick ( Huawei , free gift from Alice /O2 Provider in Germany ) via OTG Kabel
xxx.amazon.de/gp/product/B0090N2FBA/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i00
to my Nexus7.
Stock Rom, Android 4.1.1, rooted.
I used the app PPP Widget. ( xxx.draisberghof.de/android/pppwidget.html )
Everything worked like a charm.
I hardly found informations about Nexus7 working with this app, so i just wanted to spread the good news.
If someone needs information about the exact hardware version of this Huawei stick, i could post information later on.
As far as i tested, all applications got working internet connection.
Greetings.
Great news. Does the app need root or will it work on an unrooted device?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Root access is mandatory....
So far with the OTG USB cable i`m able to access my pictures directly on SD-Card in my EOS 1100d Canon Camera with Sticky Mount ( Play Market ), connect a USB 3.0 NTFS 32 Gig Stick and , as described, use an external UMTS modem.
So a few good reasons for Root.
Cheers.

two drawbacks, no pin support (don't like to have my sims unlocked, but meh), and disconnect doesn't work, but you can always just unplug it.

You are right about the umts but I think the latest version of Media Importer supports NTFS.
Another alternative to having a usb stick hanging off the device is to use a pocket wifi portable modem. Be useful for just a data card but 4 hour battery life in use might be an issue when on the go.

Unfortunately I am not rooted so i can't use the second link, which is the best option. The first link seems to defeat the purpose of automation. I guess I need to accept defeat that it is not possible on the S6. :crying: Thanks for trying to help.

What about the OEM interface? Can we make it work like the S7/8/note8 did?
I don't live in America and want the even frequencies to display as well as RDS.
What is the OEM interface. If you'll explain it to me, then I can try it and tell you.
#EDIT: I see your screenshots, I checked in my "package disabler pro" and there is not a stock radio app that comes with phone.

I remember the previous models didn't have it with the American variants as well.
The note 8 had it with the Hong Kong DS variant preinstalled and was posted here in XDA. I grabbed the .apk from there and made it work with rooted S7/8 T-mo variant by pushing the apk to system.
Someone who bought the HK variant, not sure how they name it this year, can shed some light and confirm?
@mynamemetallica There must be a snapdragon variant for China and Hong Kong. This one should do. I think SM-N9600 or 9608 but I'm not sure.

That's unfortunate. I always double check before I buy. In my country only the Exynous architecture is available thus buying from local retailer is not an option for me. Luckily there is credit card and Ebay\Amazon to buy anything I want from. Just need to verify about this Hong Kong variant, hope someone who has it will show up and confirm. If not, I guess I should be going with U.S.A.
I have the T-Mobile variant and I have confirmed that yes FM is working.
Same as the note 8, snapdragons worked but exynos didn't.

The question is which variant that has FM working is also rootable?
I can confirm that the AT&T variant has an FM radio. I tried it with the Next Radio app. You need wired headphones plugged in to be the antenna.
Verizon version has FM radio enabled, too. Confirmed for the 512 gb model and 128 gb
My Note 9 in Brazil (SM-N9600) comes with a preinstalled/oficial from Samsung FM Radio app. Snapdragon variant =)
My US unlocked has the FM enabled but it didn't come with the stock Samsung app and I'm unable to install it directly. Anybody else have any luck?

I have the US unlocked SM-N960U1, manufactured in Korea. FM radio is enabled and works great. I use the NextRadio app. (I don't ordinarily want FM radio rather than streaming, but it's good to have as an emergency option.)

Check out the WETA custom ROM for N9600 thread. It has the supposedly working stock FM experience. The .apk file should be located at /system/priv-app/HybridRadi/HybridRadi.apk
Now only left to figure out how to lay it there on N960Unrooted.
Yes, it has recording function (to SD card / internal) and timer. No RDS.
