Not sure this is the right subforum. I want to recover my photos after hardware reset. I hope, my photos are not erased physically, and I want to make the image of the data partition and then recover the files with usual data recovery tools for damaged HDDs.
A method like this may help me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...de-internal-memory-data-recovery-yes-t1994705
I have already unblocked the bootloader, but still not rooted.
I fear, that some rooting procederes can overwrite the whole internal memory of my smartphone _physically_. Do you have an advice for me how can I root my phone with minimal changes to internal memory?
It's HTC One X with Android 4.2.2.

Hey Guys, I just got the htc one (m7) from t mobile. I just unlocked my boot loader and flashed TWRP. I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to partition my 32 hard drive on the phone. I want to have 2 partitions. One with 5gb and one with 27gb. This will help me with flashing different roms on the 5gb partition and having it run on that instead of worrying about my pictures, video, and music from being deleted every time i do a wipe before flashing a rom. I know it can be done. Think of it as my 27gb partition acting as a sd card will since the phone does not come with sd card support. Please can some one help me with this issue.
Wiping your phone should only consist of deleting /data, /system, and /cache. None of these should have any effect on your media stored on the phone.
Not saying it can't be done, but I've never heard of anyone partitioning the internal memory.
You will need S-Off first before being able to partition the nand chip unless you want to brick your device.
partition not needed?
So you're saying that doing a full wipe on my phone and flashing a rom, wouldn't delete the data stored in the internal memory of the phone. Also will I be able to flash a rom on my without having S-off.
What does S-off mean any way. I previously had an htc sensation and I had S-off, but I never knew what that meant. I just took it as S-off means my phone is unlocked.
Hello, need some help here!
I unlocked the bootloader without backing up any of my files... I know I'm stupid... I was too carried away by the 4.4.2 improvements to think properly...
I tried this recovery method from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1994705&nocache=1
and another similar one
But in both cases I am stucked at the first step: adb saying device is offline in cygwin.
Adb in the android sdk works fine. I'm on 4.4.2 ota from stock 4.2.2 (rogers), managed to flash twrp and got root.
I've tried revoking usb authorization but no go.
Is there any mighty guru who can help me out? Is there some way of mounting the internal storage in windows so that i can image the whole internal storage?
Any help greatly appreciate! Don't want to lose precious photos of my family...

i have no idea what you are trying to do or what you have done.
so far this is what i have understood
you have unlocked your bootloader and install TWRP and SuperSU
so you have root access
now you are wanting to back you device up.
if this is what you are trying to do then just boot to TWRP and click on backup and make a nandroid back and move on.
with a nandroid back up if you ever install anything that stops your device from booting or cause FC all you do is boot back into TWRP and click restore and click on your nandroid back up and it will restore your phone just like it was when you created the backup.
Sorry for bad focus in writing, it was 5am+ and I was very desperate...
I had unlocked the bootloader without first doing a backup, thus the unlocking process wiped my data.
I had it unlocked so that I could flash twrp and root, which I then succeeded in doing so.
Now, I hope to recover the wiped data. As Moto X only has internal storage, I can't mount it as a drive in windows and do recovery that way.
The thread I found had a particular method of imaging the whole internal storage so that recovery could be done by loading the image in windows.
But by using that method, I can't get adb (of cygwin) to connect to my phone properly. It lists the phone but says device is offline.
Does anyone know how I can get adb (cygwin) to connect to my phone properly?
Or is there another method of recovering wiped data in internal storage?
Thanks for any help!

ok i understand what you are trying to do but your not understanding how the moto x storage system works
there is 2 storage locations on are phone. Internal and emulated external(virtual SD card)
so when you do a factory reset or go into TWRP and click Wipe it wipes the internal storage only leaving the SD card files there
but the virtual sd card only contains your Pics/Downloads/and Some App Data but it dose not have your actual phone data like installed apps and setting so forth. so when you wipe your data there is no way to recovery your system you have to start over. the only thing left is going to be downloads some app data pics and other things you moved to your phone via your PC.
What i would do is rebuild your phone the way you want it and then do a nandroid backup via TWRP and then you wont have to deal with this issue again i normally make a new nandroid backup every week and delete the old one and then i make another backup via Titanium Backup.
Thanks dray_jr, for your detailed explanation.
I just found out the adb version in cygwin is outdated. I'll try to update it and see if it could work.
I don't want to give up hope yet
have Sony Xperia v - decided to unlocked bootloader by using method at developer.sonymobile. in order to install a custom ROM.
All went well, expect I have lost all my SMS, call logs and the tiny app draw (bottom of screen), and contacts
All photos are still on the phone, the only on thing I want to get back is my SMS's
Next thing i did was to search google for a data recovery for windows, most of them said they can recovery SMS, photos, etc, but requires a rooted phone.
So I rooted my phone, but the none of the software worked they can only can see the SD card, most of them need the SD card, or internal memory to be mapped to a letter drive.
Next option I tried, maybe I could try to create a image of the internal memory.
My questions are if someone can help
Are my SMS somewhere on the internal memory, but just hidden, and with root access I can view/copy them off to windows and then put them back to the phone?
Can I map internal rooted memory to windows?
Is there a easy way to take a image/backup on the whole (rooted) internal memory and dump this to windows, if so what software / flash program can read it?
any help is appreciated!
I'm hoping someone can help me.
My wife has a Note 8 (N950U) and she accidentally deleted her entire camera folder. I thought she was backing up to GPhotos but she wasn't. She had no cloud back up, and the photos were saved to internal memory not an SD. She has some photos that she is desperate to try to recover (including the last photos of her mother before she passed away). I'm fairly technically savvy, but I haven't messed under the hood of Android before. From what I've read, the only way to try to recover deleted files in this scenario is to be able to run a utility like DiskDigger as root (and I'm aware that there is only a small chance that the photos can be recovered).
So I think I need to root the phone and I don't plan to leave it rooted, just need to root it long enough to run the recovery utility and then put it back.
I see there is the SamFAIL method to root but... do I understand correctly that it will only work on Android 7? (her phone is on Oreo firmware version N950USQS5CRID)
So I read that if you are on Oreo and want to use SamFAIL, you could downgrade to Nougat first and then follow the SamFAIL process. But I have had zero success with getting a downgrade to work. Is this a possible path or does the firmware loaded on this phone completely prevent any process to get to root?
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks
No root for Snapdragon Oreo and you can't downgrade. And do check this Q&A section, threads like this already exist.
Once you upgrade to any firmware version that has a higher bootloader version, you can never go back to anything with a lower bootloader, even if it is the same (nougatt,, oreo) so,, any oreo firmware will always have higher bootloader versions than a nougatt one, besides,, once you root, samsung pay and secure folder will be gone forever,, there is no way to get them back, no workaround, no trick,, nothing will do
Try running Data Recovery software on it. If she has written over the sectors, which contain the photo's data then you won't be able to recover it.

Would that be possible even without root? I thought root would be required for recovery to work.

You don't need root access. If you connect the device to a computer and run the recovery software via that. You should be able to recover all the deleted data from your device that way. Using a data recovery app on your device requires root access.

There are a lot of scammy looking software out there when I search for this. Is there a recommended program for Windows that works for this type of recovery?

Its not possible to recover photos from android internal storage by using any kind of methods. There are various reasons for this.
The internal storage is encrypted and no third party software knows about the process. Even TWRP cant mount the storage with encryption.
The MTP protocol prohibits windows recovery tools to access the internal storage directly.
By now, the physical area might have been overwritten and data would have been lost already.
Sorry, but still, i suggest you to go to files, turn on show hidden files, navigate to dcim/.thumbnail. there might be some photos available either in internal or sdcard.
Good luck.

Firstly, rooting the device you will need to format the internal storage, anyway, to get rid of the encryption, so doing that your wife will lose everything on her device, anyway. This includes apps, music, videos, and anything else she might have on it. It's like doing a factory reset. So that wouldn't have helped your cause.
Second, apps like DiskDigger doesn't actually recover anything, either. I tried it before when I lost some photos. All it does is scour your device for thumbnails of images. Some apps save low resolution thumbnails, some save slightly higher resolution, but even if it finds thumbnails of the images you want to recover, it'll never be the same quality as the original ones. This is from my own experience of using this app and one or two others like it.
Thirdly, flash memory works a little different to hard drives and Android also works different to Windows. When you delete something off flash memory, it doesn't necessarily just mark the file as deleted or keep remnants or something, like Windows does. You can test this yourself by copying something onto an SD card, then deleting it and sticking the SD card in a computer or laptop and running data recovery software on that. Chances are high it won't pick up the deleted content.
Sadly, like sandeepkumar0153 said, your best and likely only bet is to look in the thumbnails directory to see if there's thumbnails of the images, but be prepared that those images will be very low resolution. It might really be worth it.
My advice is to make peace with what happened and start getting into the habit up backing up important files like that. I've lost many, many photos and other stuff due to the same issues or situations where I couldn't boot the device and had to do factory resets. It's sad and painful, but it happens.
Hello i format my note 9 and i want to get back my photo and voice recording pls help me to get my data and im ready to pay
There's no way if they were in the internal memory. Format = delete.
You could try one of the apps like Recuva etc see if anything left .
But as above you have deleted .
Or just restore your backup .
You could trying running data recovery software on your device. If you haven't written over those sectors in the internal storage on your device. Chances are you maybe able to recover the data.
As said above, data recovery software is your only hope. Even then, results may vary - you may get back partial images, or nothing at all.
It's 2020, people. Use cloud services gosh dang it!
