I am in the US. I received a Galaxy Note as a gift. Purchased off NewEgg, sometime in December, allegedly from Canada, but I think that was a lie.
Samsung USA and Samsung Canada both denied the existence of this model.

CSC: N7000OJVKK2
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-N7000XXKK9-CL725676 [email protected] #2
Build number: GINGERBREAD.XXKK9
My carrier is T-Mobile, with terrible, terrible data connection. (No 3G)
Will it be possible to receive OTA updates even though T-Mobile has never heard of it?
Kies says the device is unsupported. Is it possible to straighten that out?
Finally, if I need to use Odin, or some other tool to flash a ROM, how can I do a full backup first?

Thank you. That was a good start. Titanium Backup is running now. I'll check back tomorrow to see if anyone finds more information about my phone.

That's fascinating. Not the sketchiest place it could have come from, but definitely not Canada. It looks like the January update missed South Africa.
So, where does that leave me as far as updating my firmware?
Will it update on its own when S. African devices get the update? Is there any way I can connect it to Kies? Is there any benefit and/or risk to reflashing it to another region?

If you root your Note as mentioned above, you can forget about Kies (which is a piece of ****e, BTW), and flash any stock or custom Rom you like. Just check the Dev section and you'll find a wide choice of both.

Too many choices. :-/
Since I posted this thread, I have:
1. Learned a huge amount about my phone and how it works internally.
2. Rooted my phone using the ZergRush script.
3. Backed up everything on my phone using Titanium Backup.
4. Installed Odin Pro
Now, I have to decide which Firmware to install. I'd prefer a stock ROM, since I like the stock UI and apps.
It sounds like I have to change my CSC code to continue? Since there is only one ROM for my CSC. Will this step wipe my phone?
Are there any reasons to prefer one region's ROM over another? "Open" sounds like a good thing. Does it matter?
Don't worry about changing the csc. Its always an option, but entirely unnecessary unless you want to go full stock and remain unrooted. If your csc matches the csc of the official rom you have installed, you'll get kies/ota updates for that region (with dbt probably being the best one)
However, if you always want to flash the latest official firmware via mobile odin, regardless of region, and retain root, your csc is irrelevant.
It doesn't matter which rom you use from the list. I'm currently on the Germany lb1 rom, and the only difference is that the initial 'touch the Android to begin' screen was in German. There's a button on that screen to select your language from a list.

You were supposed to. Let me explain:
It's always a good practice to start clean when flashing new Roms (unless the Rom developer doesn't specify otherwise). So, the usual procedure before flashing new Roms is:
1. reboot to CWM recovery
2. factory reset
3. wipe cache
4. advanced/wipe dalvik cache
5. flash Rom zip
When you flash a Rom over another Rom without a full wipe (the little procedure above), you may face issues like FCs, old Rom components still present, random reboots and whatnot. I'm not saying these problems have to happen, but they may.
I actually just wiped mine. I switched the CSC to match the ROM I'm using. I was hoping this would get Kies to talk to it. I don't know why I'm so obsessed with making things work as the manufacturer intended!
Restoring stuff now.
Well there are no apparent benefits with KIES recognizing your device and force updates on them, coz doing so would "unroot" your phone.
So if you want to keep root, just download the stock ROM and use CWM manager to flash it. And this definitely is not how the manufacturer intends it to be, because he never wants you to be "root" in the first place.

Hello, I got a SAMSUNG G-NOTE (MODEL: GT-N7000 SSN: N7000GSMH FCC ID: A3LGTI9220 S/N: RV1C22T0xxx 12.0 2(I think this last number is the fabrication date)) it is not rooted, has stock ROM, and I don´t know what android version it has, but the first day I got it, I don’t know how, I don’t know why, may be my little son had did something, now when I turn it on it ask me for password, so I try going into recovery mode and I select “wipe data/factory reset” after confirm “YES. . .” it also ask me for a “Confirm password”, I Also tried: *2767*3855# . . . and “adb shell >> recovery --wipe_data” but almost all commands said access deny. . . I would like to upload a stock firmware may be it fixes it, I found a page (mobilecon.info/samsung-galaxy-note-firmware.html) with a lot of firmware for GT-N7000, but I don’t know what is the right for me, I am fear to brick my device, I had Google for a way to identify the device, but unsuccessfully, please anybody can help me, Thanks, Regards
first > download a GB rom (2.3.6) from samfirmware.com. extract the zip and you will get a tar.md5 file. The download Odin 1.85 and open it on pc. Put the phone in download mode (vol dwn+pwr+home and then vol up to continue) . you will get a downloading screen. at this stage. connect to pc. COM:X should come in yellow. (if not, drivers are missing on the pc. (install kies or samsung USB drivers) select the PDA tab in odin and select the tar.md5 file. donot change any other settings in odin. press start to flash
once done, phone will boot. bot into recovery and do a wipe data/factory reset.
Make sure not to do any wipes while on stock ICS kernels.
Thanks

Hello, Thanks for reply does that anwer was for me? if yes I am still worry about what rom should I download would any of those work?
Yes any GB rom for N7000 will work
lol, people
your on gn, first find product code, use the google search. The one that brings up sell code.
Now you have your pcode, that tels you what device
then dial and note your emei
*#06#
then with your emei
*#272*yourimei#
Now you have csc.
Whatever you do. If you root or plan to flash roms, backup your efs, on and off the phone.
Dont wipe on ics/jb because of brickbug. This includes changing csc, factory reset etc

Hello all,
During my travels in China, I picked up a GT-I9228G galaxy note.
Back in the UK now, and hoping I could change the rom to the english varient of GT-N7000? I am assuming GT-I9228G and GT-N7000 is the same device, just different regional roms(?).
The boot screen is chinese. It has chinese apps on it which I cant remove and no app store amongst other things. Ideally, would like to make the phone all english. Is this possible?
Just a bit of background on me:
I used to own a HTC PDA which I swap roms from developers here and very familair with jail breaking on apple products. Andriod however is new to me. I am a quick learner, so any pointers would be great please guys/gals.

I guess you could... Lots of other people bought their galaxy note from Hong Kong and also from china and they all changed their ROM for a same reason of yours.
Does not the 9220 using a snapdragons and not exynos? I not sure but I thing I have read it somewhere so carefully before flashing.

So, potentially I could just change to the one below?
N7000XXKKA ## 2.3.6 2011 November N7000CPWKK3 United Kingdom (Carphone Warehouse) Download
The box says 1.4 + <insert chinese characters here>
From wiki -A dual-core 1.4Ghz Exynos processor or a 1.5 Ghz Snapdragon S3 processor (AT&T, SK Telecom, KT, LG U+)
So my guess is Exynos. Anyway to double check?
ok, so I have downloaded the above rom and Odin3 v1.83 from sammobile.
I have opened Odin3 and specified the PIT file (Q1_20110914_16GB)
I have also ticket re-partition, auto reboot and F.reset timer.
I have loaded the rom under PDA (N7000XXKKA_N7000CPWKK3_N7000XXKK5_HOME.tar), everything else is unticked.
I have the phone in download mode ready.
I just need to know if the above is ok or am I missing anything before I click START and brick my phone?
Thanks,
Chris.
well I tried anyway.
That didnt work.
Now the phone says "software update fail"
I can still get into download mode, buts thats about it.
tried with and without the PIT file.
Anyone know what I should do now please?
I'd say you'll have to find a rom for that model
maybe http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-I9220&r=2#regiona
You might have bricked your phone by checking repartition in odin. You should not have. Now you probably need to find a pit file for your model.

If you could enter download mode then try these steps
1. Open Odin and flash Pit file only and Re-partition ticked. (do not attach any ROM)
2. After this again flash ROM without pit file and re-partition un-ticked
This should work.

Thanks,
The first part seemed to work ok, so then went onto flashing again without the PIT file. Failed
Back to square one (software update fail message).
Going to try the original ROM, but takes about 6 hours to download from china!.
Ideally, really dont want to use the original ROM though! I'm guessing the original ROM isnt going to work now anyway since ODIN3 has re-partitioned the device(?).

Oh, I forgot to mention. I read somewhere (forgot where) that I should root the device prior to changing the ROM. Is that true? If so, I dont think thats something I can do in current state

CWM is clockworkmod right? Dont I need a rooted phone in order to install it?
Or do I follow something like this? http://whatareandroidphones.net/root-samsung-galaxy-note.html
Yes... CWM recovery doesn't need root.
hello,
Didnt have the time to work out CWM, but was given a link to another rom which had three files for ODIN3 (http://hotfile.com/dl/149302861/1896440/N7000XXLA6_N7000XEULA1_XEU.rar.html).
So, loaded the above and the phone is back in action on a N7000 rom. Wohoo. Just glad it's working again more then anything else lol!
This rom is prerooted apparently too. know idea what I should be able to do now. What does one usually do when they have a rooted device?

Thread accidentaly revived :S
Ok folks,
Forgive me if this is a panic post!
I successfully rooted my note this morning, I was on LA6 firmware, Downgraded and rooted without any problems.
I noticed that I only had "emergency calls only" after the reboot, so went into mobile network settings and managed to get a signal on my network (3uk) although it dropped again when I rebooted again?
Right after the Rooting was done, I backed up my EFS folder as stated is best practice, then backed up the stock rom.
I thought that maybe the old baseband version was giving me the issues (I presume the notes modem is similar to the HTC radio?) so I went ahead and gave Checkrom NoteHD V6 a shot. It all installed fine and as it should but I still have the no network issue. I dont think it corrupted the efs system as I can still use wifi and my IMEI number is still there.
Any ideas for a new note owner?
Edit:
-----------
I did make note that I was on Baseband XXLA4 before rooting or flashing anything, is it safe to go ahead and flash it from the modems thread via CWM? Should this help?
any pointers if doing so?

You may have already tried this but are your APN settings correct?
They may change or get deleted between ROM flashes
Also what modem do you have and baseband in the about phone menu right now?
Wow, that was quick!
My APN settings all seem fine. The preset for three.co.uk were still there and the settings inside seem intact.
Im currently running baseband XXLB2.

How did you root your note? I am on 3 in the UK with same firmware, have been looking around but not much progress.

First thing first...
- do the hard reset Vol Up + Menu + Power *or* CWM Wipe everything. Reboot...
- Still no go, go and download different radio HERE and flash it

i suggest, flash CheckRoom v6 (the most professional stock look-alike rom). If the problem still there, try flash another radio. After that if still no go... try CM9/AOSP ICS

No, no carrier lock, no branding, no nothing!
Just been racking my brains, after refering to a video link posted in the how to root galaxy note thread, I see a chap called cursed4eva created a video using ODDKL1 as the downgrade to root method. Just checked on samfirmware.com and that is Indian firmware, could this cause my network issue?
Im in the process of downloading the lastest Uk firmware now.
If it was the case that this indian firmware was causing the issue, wouldnt flashing checkrom fix it? I didnt seem to for me?
Anyway, rooting around on the samfirmware pages, ive found a directly rootable firmware package (KK3) that was a carphone warehouse UK one.
If I get network back from the latest firmware, im going to downgrade to the above mentioned carphone warehouse package, Root, and try again.
I will post back some results ASAP.

Hello everyone hoping someone can help me. I tried rooting my note 5 with odin and it now is softbricked. I've tried installing the stock firm ware but odin says failed, the rooting threw odin actually passed but when booting says that weird android enforcing message at top left and gets stuck at the us cellular LTE 4G screen and just sits there. Sucks I didn't do an android back up before I tried all this. I think it's a boot loader issue?? Also is us cellular same as sprint kernals?? There is not much for us cellular version it seems.
Us cellular and sprint are as close as you're gonna likely get. Us cellular due to a small customer base doesn't receive the aftermarket support on xda as the other carriers. A rooted kernel is what you need. Also before flashing anything in odin you need to enable developer mode and turn on oem unlock or you're odin flashes will fail....i would see if a sprint kernel will let you boot or try to find a stock usc rom image you can flash thru odin. Also check out teamuscellular.com forums, as they MIGHT have a rooted kernel available, but sprint and usc are relatively interchangeable. A sprint kernel might at least get you booted so you can enable developer mode and oem unlock to flash something else in odin. You have custom recovery? Download mode? Adb sideload? All those routes should be available to you to get a recovery and kernel into the system. I would first find a version of twrp to flash in odin if you haven't already, then look for a kernel you can flash in twrp. As a last resort flash a recovery then look for a sprint stock Deodexed rom- it MIGHT boot on your factory kernel (roms often do not include any kernel with the note 5's) and then with some likely apn modifications and maybe a few other things you could potentially get a working rom going on usc....but i would check teamuscellular before anything- google them i might have the address wrong I'm going off memory lol good luck! I used to have usc myself so i know your struggle and it's so frustrating when the dev support isn't there because your carrier is too small :/
Also as a side note you'll very likely need a pc with UP TO DATE SAMSUNG USB DRIVERS!
Here is a link to stock usc firmware. Flash in odin or twrp whichever is recommended and you should be back to running at least...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=62424205

A sprint note 5? What EXACTLY did you try to do? Because sprint is easy, flash twrp in odin then flash a rooted kernel, and you're basically done....what exactly happened?

Flash in odin or twrp whichever is recommended and you should be back to running at least...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=62424205

hello, I'm also a USC Note 5 owner, looking to flash Sprint Nougat firmware in my phone, yesterday I flashed MOAR (a sprint based rom) with TWRP in my phone without any problems, but then I tried to flash QC5 Nougat Stock Deodexed Rom on it, and I softbricked it, then I tried to flash back to stock looking to fix it and I bricked it, I had to take it to a phone repair shop because I lost recovery and download mode access. it would say that I had to connect it Smart switch to restore, but smart switch was asking for my phone S/N, and I dont have it.
Now my phone is working again and I want to ask you : if i flash an sprint based Kernel in my USC phone, will I be able to install stock sprint 7.0 update?

Did you get it work out. You shouldn't have a problem flashing sprint custom roms.. im on USC and can flash all rom with little to no problem. I'm running teamspeak nugget 7.0 on a 6.0 firmware. Haven't done the 7.0 update yet. I'm also unlock on gsm network.. if you need any help just let me know .

I want to run a 7.0 based rom, or stock deoxeded rom in my device, but I have been struggling to get anything going.
Before we try anything else, can you please give me a link to an stock 6.0.1 for our USC Note 5, because every download that I find on the web are on 45kb/s-80kb/s download speed, and every sprint based rom that I find I can get download speeds up to 2mb/s .
thanks!

I got to into 7.0 system but it keeps rebooting, should I flash a different kernel to fix the issue?
so I had go back and flash MOAR 4.3 (6.0.1)
Hello everyone, I have what I hope to be a quick question. I'm pretty new to Samsung devices, I've had tons of rooting experience but mostly with Nexus phones and HTC, my last Samsung was my Galaxy S3. I just bought a N920I unlocked of swappa.com that I'm going to use on AT&T. The seller noted that it is already rooted with a custom ROM on it. When I get it I want to flash back to complete stock, but I'm not sure exactly what firmware to flash, I know how to use Odin, but there are tons of different firmware versions on sammobile here http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-N920I/ and I'm not sure which one to flash. After I go full stock I'm only really interested in rooting and running Xposed, maybe a custom kernel, at least until I get the hang of this device more, should I just flash the newest one? I've heard that I shouldn't flash one that has anything to do with a carrier, the newest one AOL2 but it says that is for Vodafone? I've tried looking around in the General and Q&A sections but can't seem to find a definite answer.
You can download from Sammobile if you like, but it will take awhile if you do not have their premium service. I recommend using Samsung Kies. I have a N920I that I use on ATT and this is what I did . . . .
Place the phone in download mode, open Samsung Kies 3 (ignore the not compatible popup), click Tools, then Firmware upgrade and initialization, Model : SM-N920I (include caps) , and then put in your serial. It will let you know that its going to restore the phone to factory and wipe the data, etc.
I don't have any issues with cell service, data, etc on OL2. I did not even need to manually set up the APN.

Awesome, thanks for the info. After that it'll be set back to factory right? With it already being rooted and on a custom ROM I have no idea what all the guy before me has done to it and I just wanna start fresh. Then after that, from what I've read, I can just use Odin to flash TWRP right?

Yes, you will be back to stock. You could even go the extra mile by booting into recovery and wiping the System, Data, Caches, and Internal storage before using Samsung Kies, but that isn't necessary (kinda overkill because kies should wipe it). I understand, I would wipe it and everything too.
When ready to root, follow @dr.ketan post here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/note5/general/how-to-root-note-5-t3205073
There is also a link for Xposed in there. If you want xposed, download the SDK22-ARM64
Check the baseband in the settings. That will tell which firmware to download, because there are a lot for the 920I. Sammobile is the fastest place I could find firmware available... 300 kb/s max speed unless a donor.
