Broken Screen, Need USB Debug mode on. - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo Q&A, Help & Troublesh

So this is for my dad's phone. He dropped it and the screen and the LCD panel part busted so the whole screen is all black. Can't see a single thing on it. He got a new (read:refurbished) one so that's not an issue. I'm trying to use a screen mirroring program to factory reset the phone before he sends it back to Motorola. Issue seems to be those programs require USB debugging mode to be turned on but since the screen is all black, I can't do that. I even tried doing multiple screenshots and guessing where things were but it didn't work (worried the top of the phone's touch digitizer is busted too but i'm hoping for the best lol). So I need a way to turn on USB debug mode, with a totally black screen (touch still works), NOT ROOTED, so I can then mirror it with the MirrorGo or Vysor mirroring software so I can factory reset the device. If you have any thoughts for a simpler fix then I'm open to suggestions. I'm not tech savvy enough to do anything with Rooting and i'm not confident enough to try doing that with a busted phone (if it's even possible), so that's an option that's out too. :/

You can go into recovery mode and do the factory reset there, it's probably the easiest way to do it.

Yea, i tried that with the bootloader/fastboot thing. It didn't seem to work. I can barely tell if the device is even ON, only indication it's on is the volume rocker makes a noise to indicate volume and the bottom buttons light up. So being able to tell if the device is even IN it's bootloader mode thing was a crapshoot. I'm gonna need either a way to screen mirror in real time without debugging mode on, or a way to enable debug mode remotely essentially.

how do i factory reset with a dead screen?

my damaged nexus one screen has progressed to the point of a black screen all the time... i didnt think of it before the screen died, but i am a bit stumped as to how i now reset to clear all my data? i cant see anything on the screen, but the phone still has my google account linked to it.
doh! :-(
reason i want it cleared: may send in for repair and i dont want others to get my info, or i may have to send to insurance company for payout (they said to hang on to phone for now) and i dont want them to see my info, or may sell damaged unit if insurance doesnt pay and i dont want those folks to get my info either.... see the problem?
You can try this. Did a google search.
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-general-discussions/28793-how-do-full-adb-wipe-help.html
thanks for the link...would work if id had debugging enabled before the screen died... adb wipes require debugging mode.
any other suggestions?
There's this:
http://code.google.com/p/androidscreencast/
But if you don't have Debugging enabled and can't get it to register when you hit "adb devices" you're probably effed. I don't know much about touch screen engineering, though. Does it still respond to touch as far as you can tell, or is the screen completely dead when the OLED display stops working?
This serves as a good warning for others, though. ALWAYS MAKE SURE USB DEBUGGING IN SETTINGS > APPLICATIONS > DEVELOPMENT IS CHECKED. There's really no good reason I can think of that would ever make you want to leave this unchecked, and this is an example of when it would come in very handy.
cant you use the clear storage function by booting while holding volume down, waiting 5 seconds, then pressing volume down 3 times followed by a press of the power button?

the digitizer still accepted touch input as screen beneath began to fail. colors bled from the cracks and the images began to imprint in the screen... within a few hours, it was completely illegible, and then the next morning, it appeared as a dysfunctional unit with a non working screen.
i will try and methods suggested, but i have no way to verify success... thanks for the sequence.
well when you boot by holding power, your given options FASTBOOT, RECOVERY, CLEAR STORAGE, SIMLOCK
Heres the exact key combination
Boot phone using Volume Dn + Power
Wait 5-10 seconds to be safe
Press Volumn Dn twice
Press Power Btn
Press Volume Up
Phone should reboot after 5 seconds
i will try that... confirmation of success will be the charging LED turning off and then back on again?

of the reboot? ya. i cant imagine doing this without the screen lol. Sorry i couldnt be more help
You could also probably flash a PASSIMG.zip from the bootloader. That will overwrite all partitions so it should make it 100% stock.
It might be harder to do without the screen than the clear storage function though.

tried the method... and i think it worked... i cant verify, but thanks for the help guys.
You can easily verify that by sending yourself an email and see if your phone can get the notification of that new email (by trachball or sound).

LG P880 hard brick can't reach internal memory

Hello,
I have an LG P880 and I had the Torch app with the flash on.
I accidentally dropped the phone and it fell with the screen down and the flash went off.
When I went so see what happened I noticed that the battery was still attached.
I tried to turn on the phone but to no avail. The power button seems to be working as I can hear it click, but the screen doesn't turn on.
Later tried to connect the phone to my PC to check if it connected in download mode, but it didn't. ADB doesn't recognize any devices either.
I don't know what else I can try.. I had some notes on the internal memory that I can't reach and I really needed them..
Does anyone know of a way to extract information from the internal memory?
The phone is still on warranty and I don't see any screws that have a void stamp. If needed I can disassemble it.
It was running CM 10.1 stable.
Thank you for your time

try removing the battery, plug a usb connected to a pc, whilst holding volume down, if it goes into software download mode, you can restore it by flashing the original firmware through kdz.

Thank you for your reply, but I have already tried that. The screen doesn't even turn on.
Another interesting thing that I found is that in complete darkness, I remove and insert the battery and try to turn it on. The lights on the touch buttons slightly blink and the phone doesn't do anything else.

If the phone does not turn on, something has probably broken inside the phone, due to you dropping it. You could try to get it repaired and hope the info will stay on it, or you could disassemble yourself and see if you can spot the problem and repair it yourself.

Thank you for your reply, I will send it to warranty tomorrow probably. I disassembled everything except the touch screen and it seems everything is in place, since I'm don't have the knowledge for anything else and don't want to break any seals if any exist
More information: I can turn it on to the APX mode apparently (volume up + volume down + power on), however Windows says it is an "Unknown device" and doesn't even provide a vendor/device ID so no driver can be installed for the device..
Hope they can salvage my data or I'll have a hard time trying to remember my notes lol

The APX mode is like recovery mode but on a deeper level. You use nvflash with it. If you can't get to this mode nothing else will work more info here
I sent it to warranty, they said they will contact me within 5 days

Factory reset and/or reflash firmware with rsd lite
If device is not rooted factory reset should work.
Or
There are some apps like lightflow that may help
Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk
Thanks a lot
Lightflow is for notifications?
I was referring to the backlight.
I think that it's a HW problem, poor connection between the screen and qwerty or something similar. I put a little carton between the keyboard and the screen and the lights on...
Hi again
My screen doesn't work anymore.
I dont know what happened with my phone, i think that in a reboot it entered to safestrap or other option and doesn't boot.
When I press vol keys, my D4 vibrates.
My pc shows 2 disk but I can't see the data (maybe it's unmount?).
I can't see the device via ADB.
PD: Fortunately, previously I made a backup of memory (8 GB) ... but I wanted made a full backup with safestrap D:

Your LCD or flex cable likely failed, fairly common with slide out droids
both can be replaced
you need to unlock you screen to see data on drives
Likely the Digitizer is still working, just need to guess where the unlock is

Device stuck in download mode

My wife Nokia 7 Plus was found in download mode (white screen with Android One logo) and is stuck in this mode. I've never done any unlock bootloader or root or anything on it (thus I did on other phones so I'm not totally stranger to it) and I'm 100% sure she didn't tried anything strange either. The phone is completely stock and probably with the last update as it went back new from repair a few months ago (for screen brightness issue) and I did update everything possible before she used it again.
The phone start automatically and immediately I see the white screen with AndroidOne logo and after a few ms it refresh and it's the same screen with the back text "Download mode" at the top.
I've tried to force shutdown and reboot by long pressing power. I cannot keep it shutdown, it goes back to Download Mode screen.
I've tried to restart start with power + vol up or power + vol down, power + vol up + vol down. Same.
I've tried to let it die on battery, charge it, and here it's a black screen with the large battery logo and a white text at the top saying: Download mode. After a few minute I try to boot and it's back to the white screen.
What can I tried next before I send it back for repair and it will be probably wiped again...
Side story, I've almost force her to switch from iPhone to Android because of price of the devices, and so far she is not converted at all with all the trouble we got with this Nokia.
As last before send to service try wipe in recovery, if not boot to recovery via buttons, try if your download mode is recognised by fastboot and reboot to recovery using: fastboot reboot AND IMMEDIATELY HOLD BUTTONS POWER and VOLUP until show "green android icon with no command

I'm having the same problem. Exactly what you said. I didn't root my device or even attempt to do anything. I bought Nokia because they were purely stock and delivered some quality mobile phones. I've got only this phone as my daily driver. So tell me if you have got the issue fixed and how much did it cost and how long it took. It's been stuck with that 'android one' logo and a small message that reads 'Download mode' on top. I've tried everything. And what I'm worried about is, my phone's out of warranty and I'm a student. I hope you got it fixed for some reasonable cost. Please reply to me ASAP.
My wife's phone also has had this exact same problem.
I have tried all the tricks mentioned above including ADB mode (it could not find the phone).
The phone is supposed to be under warranty. So I took it back to the place of purchase.
However, the phone has a tiny crack in the corner of the screen which my wife and I were not aware of. So Nokia have indicated that unless I get the crack fixed, the warranty is voided and they will not fix the boot problem.
Because the broken crack is not covered by warranty, Nokia want $270 for a new screen before they will look at the software problem caused by the pie update.
I took it to a third party repair shop to see if there is a cheaper option. They cannot fix it either.
So the 5 month old Nokia phone is now useless.
But if anyone can comes across a solution for this, can they please post it here.
Thanks.
Same here. I told the guy on the phone about the crack. But he told me it should not be a problem. Now I got an email that I needed to pay 185 euro's to repair the screen.
Because of their FW-update, my phone became unuseful.
When I get it back (not repaired) I will try a OST on it.
I solved my issue via this procedure:
https://www.techmesto.com/possible-fix-nokia-smartphone-stuck-on-download-mode-after-ota-update/
I solved it via drivers: https://github.com/StollD/nokia-driver-installer/raw/master/out/Phone_Nokia_USB_Driver_v1.4.0.exe

My Nokia 7 Plus got stuck in download mode after accidently pressing all buttons simu
Yes I know that sounds like a weird title and maybe you are wondering why did I do that? notice the word accidently.
I was just trying to fly my newly bought drone x pro for the first time and the controller has a little pull out extendable cradle to hold the phone in
if you want to view what the FPV camera is viewing while in flight and because of the bad design with all buttons on the same side of the Nokia 7 plus, unbeknownst to me all 3 buttons were being pressed at the same time and before I knew it my phone was shutting down and rebooting to this ridiculous download mode and the rest is history!
So I just thought I would mention this to anyone who happened to or happens to land in the same situation as me to be aware that you should probably put a little bit of sponge taped to the side of your phone over the volume buttons to possibly prevent it from being pressed simultaneously when flying your fpv drone.
If all else fails you could always connect the drone to your phone and then just put your phone in your pocket and fly blind by simply walking with the drone or rather running since they are pretty nippy. I am a bit bummed as this would have been a very convenient way of checking how full my guttering is of leaves without having to climb a ladder every time to check!?
Anyway I also used the fix here: https://www.techmesto.com/possible-fix-nokia-smartphone-stuck-on-download-mode-after-ota-update/
after downloading the nokia phone drivers from github.
If you are on windows 10 pro you may get a screen protector warning not to proceed further?
Ignore it and continue installing the drivers!
So far I got the Nokia Logo back and then it just hung there for several minutes without being recognised by the pc.
So I simply disconnected the phone from the pc and suddenly got the familiar nokia tone start up but then black screen again.
I realised it had been on the download mode so long it had completely drained the battery so now I am charging it.
Fingers crossed when I power up again I will at least have my phone back, sadly minus the data. (I will of course at least have all my google notes and contacts etc backed up to google servers at least they are useful for something!!)
I can't recall the last time I used it but I am pretty sure I had the SD card set as the main download so hopefully fingers crossed that data should have remained untouched, not sure how Android sets this up anymore?
Long time since gingerbread when you could still install and run apps as a completely separate partition.
All became a bit confusing after that so rooting became something I did hesitantly and as a definite last resort!
Anyway I am rambling on. If I find the fix works I will let you know.
Thanks for reading and thanks in advance if the fix works !!:good::good:

Sadly my SD card was wiped too!!!!! super pissed off about this, many photos and notes and other files that I will never get back unless if I recall I may have made a manual backup of at least some of the earlier stuff I put on here a few months back on my pc?
Nokia will be hearing from me for sure!!!!! I want a 50% refund for messing with my life and my time. How can they send an update that essentially breaks a phone for a bit!???!!!!!!

Question In New Zealand - Black screen of death and no support for Pixel 5a

I bought a 5a from the Google Store in the US back in Nov 2021. I have since moved to New Zealand.
So apparently the Pixel 5a was never released here, so support options are extremely limited. Google store support says I'd need to mail the phone back to the US to get warranty service done. I don't think so.
Here's what happened:
Phone was working fine. Was on a phone call. Screen froze. I could hear the person, but they couldn't hear me. I did a hard reset, and the screen went black and never came back on. The phone itself is working-- vibrations, bluetooth devices connecting, etc. But the screen remains black.
I inspected the screen for microfissures, just in case, but didn't see any. Because of how the BSOD happened, it seems very likely it's a software crash that borked my display.
I'd love to do a factory reset, but I cannot access the bootloader because the screen doesn't come on at all.
Is there a way I can access the bootloader via my laptop through USB cable without having to access the screen at all? I never rooted this phone, so I don't have an easy back door entry to the bootloader.
Thanks in advance for your help.
so, this is "funny", cause it just happened to mine, too. were you on the new 13 release? or did you use the app Repainter? cause I don't know what happened with mine. i was rooted, and thought it had something to do with that. first time it happened, i was able to use the flash tool available in the chrome browser. second time, it didn't work (couldn't reboot to fastbootd) and i had to send it in. anyways, not sure if you would have ever enabled usb debugging. enter fastboot by holding power and volume down. then do a flash with the flash tools. not sure if you'd have to wipe your data. google should receive my 5a tomorrow and hopefully they'll give me an update
so i saw 3 more posts on here about the same problem - one of em in the last week. can't be this common of a problem with other devices

No I'm running stock everything. Not rooted but I turned USB debugging on.
What's the flash tool available in the browser you are referring to? Were you able to factory reset even with a black screen? If so, I need to know details

yeah, the first time i was able to restore it. you should be able to tell the phone is still connected. connect the usb, hold the power and vol down buttons until you hear or see the alert it's connected. then select it on the the flash tool. choose the build to flash. i left all the options as default, but you probably don't have to relock the bootloader

no you don't. i don't think you have to have been connected to it before. like usually when you use adb, you have to approve it from your phone the first time. but i'm not sure
Just tried this.
At one point in connecting to the Android flash tool, you have to tap on the screen to accept a debugging prompt, which doesn't work as my screen is black.
So how did you get this working?
have to tried powering on with power + vol down to see if you can get to the bootloader?
have to tried to reflash the stock rom? from here https://developers.google.com/android/images#barbet
you must use chrome browser to do this.
you only need bootloader unlocked to reflash the stock rom.

So I'm guessing that I can get into the bootloader to attempt to unlock it, but i can't do anything with it because the screen remains black.
Is there a way that I can bypass the screen on the phone with some sort of tool that will display and let me interact with the phone on my windows laptop? If i can do that, I'll finally be able to do a factory reset without having to reflash anything.

Did you happen to have "Allow OEM unlocking" toggled on in Developer Options in Settings before the issue started happening?

I definitely have USB debugging enabled, but I didn't modify any other settings. It's pretty stock barbet. The problem is with the black screen I can't accept USB debugging on the phone after I initiate a request on the PC.

Does the screen stay black but still accept inputs, or is it completely unresponsive with no display?
Also, the problem with trying to flash a new rom is that:
1) my phone is locked, and I cannot unlock it with a black screen
2) I have to accept something on the screen of the phone (which is black) to allow the flash to initiate

I am 100% sure the phone is operating correctly behind the viel of black screen darkness.
The phone is completely responsive to button presses and paired bluetooth devices. I can tell this because the bluetooth devices tell me that they've connected, and I've also turned on the accessibility (hold vol up and down) so I get voice prompts that tell me the phone is locked, % battery left, charging status, etc. I am sure the phone is accepting inputs from the USB cable when I attempt to flash.
The first barrier is that the phone is locked, and the second barrier is that I can't accept any screen inputs/usb connections with a black screen.
If there were a way to initiate a factory reset only using physical buttons, I think I'd be fine.

Sorry, I was meaning does it accept touch inputs? If it does, you should be able to guess the location of the prompt on screen and accept it.

No touch inputs at all. That's the whole problem. The phone otherwise seems to be working fine.

so they do make hdmi casts. i had one for my htc one m9. basically it would mirror the screen to my tv by older android connector to hdmi. i am sure they make newer ones that are USB-C to hdmi. it is similar to the one in this video
. except with not being able to use the touch screen as well you would have to use a usb c splitter and then get cheap usb wired mouse to work with it all. not sure if wireless would work. i did use my bluetooth mouse but that was a long time ago on my htc one m9 and once again no touch input leaves you with not many options. it is not a free option. unless you buy it all then return it if it doesn't work or you manage to solve the problem.
you might also want to try the main general q&a forum on xda. https://forum.xda-developers.com/f/general-questions-and-answers.456/ maybe a recognized developer will read it and know of something. the pixel 5a forum isn't most active forum for development.

The Android flash tool site only requires USB debugging enabled. If your bootloader is not unlocked, the AFT will unlock it for you. ***unless it is a Verizon locked phone.

But that's the issue. They aren't able to accept the ADB debugging request if they can't use the screen.

The problem with AFT is that it requires a screen tap (and an unlocked screen) to accept the USB debugging connection.
