XBMC App

I just bought a new HDTV along with a new HTPC. I dont want a full size keyboard and I didnt feel like paying $130 for a Logitech DiVino Mini. I did a little digging around and found this.
http://www.xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=43156
I just downloaded at work so I cant test it yet. Only version .1 is out so its still pretty early. Use at your own discretion
I have tried it and it works, though not flawlessly. A few quirks.
It's worth mentioning it's at this stage only a remote, you have to have the TV/monitor turned on to see what you're doing. Nothing is rendered locally on the G1/Android, so you can't start up a music playlist without having to turn the TV on, for example.
That said, it's pretty nice. I hope he keeps working on it, because XBMC is by far the best media center out there.

Actually when I got home, I couldnt get it to work. I'm having issues with XBMC and Win7 so maybe thats the problem. I noticed remotedroid is the same as this tho. Maybe in the future or later releases the author will add short cuts or a remote control feel for it.
I would like to see something where you flick your finger across the screen and it goes to a mouse touch pad and than flick across the screen again and its a remote control.
O well, Guess Ill just get the Logitech Mini DiNovo still.

LED Flashlight

Hello all,
Has anyone been able to access the LED flash on the Nexus one without rooting? I would like to create a flashlight app of my own to do this, but I have no idea where to begin.

I love incorrect information said with such confidence, lol.
n1 torch, as has been mentioned, is root only. Heck, if you go to download it, it SAYS it. Beyond that, unfortunately no, at this moment from my research, you'll need root access to gain control of the LED. Sorry
Re the N1 Torch, which i love btw, is anyone else having problems with the widget?
Most of the time its perfect, but sometimes it appears to lag by ALOT, ie you press it multiple times to try and turn it on, then a few minutes later in your pocket it starts flashing on and off while in your pocket.
i prefer the color flashlight one, i think thats what its called, it doesnt use the led it lights up the screen itself, much brighter and wider light imo
use it while sneaking up to bed after late night raids in warcraft so i dont wake the g/f
I used that one last night to read, I see what you mean about its much wider, but its definitely NOT brighter than the LED, although that only lasts for like a minute before it needs to cool down.

[APK] Official Thread for Keep The Lights On 1.3 (Free Version)

If you want to donate, or more features, check out Keep The Lights On Pro.
What does it do?
Keep The Lights On is a simple app that performs one function. It keeps the LEDs behind the buttons on a Captivate or similar phone on while the screen is on.
That seems stupid, why would anyone do that?
Well, try finding those buttons in the dark. While the stock ROM turns on the LEDs when you touch the screen, the i9000 based ROMs do not. In addition, most i9000 ROMs have a timeout of 3 seconds.
Doesn't that waste battery?
Depends on what you mean by waste. So first you have to understand the scale of battery consumption I'm talking about. LEDs, especially surface mount ones, draw very little power. How little? Assuming typical LEDs, we're talking 5 milliamps at 3.3 volts. Given that there are 4 LEDs, that means the total power consumption is 0.005 * 3.3 * 4 or 0.066 watts. The CPU consumes between 100 and 1000 milliamps, again at 3.3 volts meaning it uses between 0.33 and 3.3 watts. That's 5-50 times as much power, and that's before adding in the backlight, radio, etc. While yes, technically this uses a little more power, the scale is so small that for all intents and purposes it isn't going to make a difference in your life. Seeing the buttons clearly though, that takes frustration out of your life. Seems like a reasonable trade off.
Does it work with other BLN things like Blinky or BLN Pro?
Yes. This uses a different way to handle the BLN than both those apps. In fact it only requires a rooted ROM with these lights to work. So that means it should work for i9000, Fascinate, Captivate, Vibrant, etc. This should even work with the stock ROM given it is rooted.
If it works for all those phones, why is this just in the Captivate Section?
Well, I only have one phone right now to test with. That is my personal Captivate.
Why are you giving this away for free? Are you drunk? Does it use ads?
To answer the second question first, sometimes but not right now. This is free because I like making people's lives easier. I do not believe in advertisement based products, so you'll never see that from me. If you want to give something back, consider the donate button or buy the Pro version.
I installed it but didn't the app in my list of apps. Is it broken?
Short answer, no. This is a widget based app. Simply add the widget and click it to change the light behavior. You can even remove the widget and it'll remember your preference when you start up. That said if you uninstall the app you'll loose the behavior.
I just got an invalid signature error. What do I do?
This is my fault, there was an early version that I didn't sign correctly. Simply uninstall it manually before installing this version from the market.
What other issues exist?
Well there's a few:
I've had one report of the lights flashing instead of staying solid when turning the screen on. If this user hits one of the buttons the lights will stay on. I'm working on a way to fix this, I haven't found the cause as of yet.
There's a superuser notice every once in a while. This is easy to turn off in the superuser app, and will be fixed in the pro version.
There's been one report of clicking a link in andchat causes the lights to go out. I haven't been able to reproduce it yet.
If you find a problem not on this list, feel free to let me know.
What other features are in this app?
None; however, I'm always open to new ideas. Be warned though, they may go into the pro version.
How do I get this app?
From the market, or here:

Suggestion
I have not tried your app yet, but I have a suggestion.
If you could turn on or off each individual LED, rather than all on or all off, then you could consider using each button to indicate something different.
Home - new email
Menu - new text
Back - missed call
Maybe you can even make them blink?

What would be the point of that with this app.....it turns the lights on when the screen is on, if the screen is on then you have those same notifications at the top of the screen already.
Though I guess it might be useful for some if those additions were made to Guardian Bob's BLINKY APP.
Support for Galaxy Tablet
First off, thanks for your efforts!! This is exactly what I'm looking for.
Any chance you will be able to support this on the galaxy tablet? I am happy to help in any way I can - I am a developer (though I haven't done much android development). I have a rooted device with busy box... if there's anything I can do to help you figure out this device, please let me know!
Crazy me, I would honestly like to be able to DISABLE these lights. I watch movies and do other things a lot in the dark, and these bright white lights randomly popping up on my phone are very distracting. Since they can be turned ON manually, does that mean perhaps they can be turned OFF as well?

Lovin it. One of the pet peeves of this device was the short duration on the home keys.
How about this as as Pro suggestion (if possible):
Control brightness level when LEDs are on.
My cuz has a DINC and i absolutely LOVE the brightness of his home keys. Super easy to see. Possible?
works on Korean Galaxy S shw-m110s, maybe the least compatible of the SGS versions, cheers.
Working fine so far on my Vibrant running Nero v5.
Good job, but i was wondering if there's an opposite app, one that turns off the led buttons even when the screen is touched? What for? For reading ebooks in the dark, the led buttons hurt the eyes even when the screen has been adjusted to the lowest light level. Thank

FYI -
I'm working on tasker support for the pro version right now (well not right now, I'm taking a moment from that work to update people) but when I finish this I'll continue working on my beer, watching the Packers vs the Bears and keep working on adding tasker/locale support.
Mine stopped working, Not sure why. I have the widget and it will light up or un-light. But it will no longer keep the lights on. Any suggestions on figuring out why ?

[REVIEW] Motorola Xoom Bluetooth Keyboard

I just got my Xoom bluetooth keyboard in today for my nook, and I got to say... I couldn't be happier
Typing on this thing is so easy as it is a full size keyboard. The keys are nice and big, but not to big but just the right size. They have a nice spacing and the whole keyboard just seems to flow and it let's your fingerrs move fast across the keys.
It does have it down sides such as: not all the keys seem to work most do without a problem but caps lock does not work, as does the Tab button. Arrow keys work, but they seem to be swithed, the left arrow goes up, the right arrow down, the up arrow left, and the down arrow, right. I assume these keys work on a computer that can make use of a bluetooth keyboard but seeing as my computer does not have such functionailty, I cannot test it out.
Around the edges there is a glossy finish which leads to mucho fingerprints. The keys are matte, so the only time they ever seem to get nasty is when you are really greassy, or you are sweaty.
All in all, I'd have to give this keyboard an 8/10 It would get a 7, but seeing as how I got it from wal-mart for around $10-20 cheaper, it makes it a great deal
P.S. It's not AS sexy as the pictures make it look :/ but its very slim and is still pretty sexy in person
P.S.S The nook box makes a great "dock" when you are at a table at the library
P.S.S.S I just took a typing test on my nook and got 58 words per minute, which is just a little slower than my normal typing speed of 65 on my computers keyboard
LOOK FOR PICS BELOW
*Sorry if my grammer and punction are off, I did type this all from the keyboard and will edit it when I can get home.
Thanks for letting us know, it sure does look cool

Ahhh that does make sense... And I guess that also means if I was using the stock music player the music keys would work. I am using phirmod 5.1 and the music keys don't work, the menu key doesn't work, and the keyboard seems to disconnect... kinda a lot. And I wishI could fix the key mappings on the dpad but I'll get used to it I assume

I didn't use an app, there is a website called 10speedyfingers, or something, that will let you check you wpm online. Just Google it and you should find it
@DiscoPh3v3r: can you post a photo of nook and keyboard together for size comparison? Thanks.
you beat me on a review by one day! I also got it from wal-mart ship-to-store (expecting to get a text from them any minute saying it's there) and was surprised at the price difference even over Amazon! I figured man this is MADE for android, why not get it? the first BT keyboard I bought I had to take back (from Frys) bcuz not only was it broken, but also it was so small I don't know how they can consider it a full sized keyboard.
I'll be getting mine, as I said, today or tomorrow, so I'll write my thoughts on here as well (as long as the OP doesn't mind).
Quick question, does it come with a case or anything to protect it? If not, I'll be looking for something to do so since I usually carry my nook and such in my backpack...
Ill try to post a picture but camera isn't very good
And it doesnt really come with a case, but it does come with a nice little plastic sleeve it comes wrapped in, sure it will look cheap, but it works great for me.
Hey Disco, got mine today and it works great except for it going to sleep mid typing pretty often, any idea why and how to fix it? This would about ruin it for me if I can't get it fixed...

Yup, that was one of my mine gripes. I cant seem to get it to stay connected, I'm hoping it is nook related and not keyboard related, so that it can be fixed with a new nightly. As of late I have not been able to get to stay connected because sometimes it will last about 30minutes and then die, and other times it takes just a second or 2.

after talking to others, searching around the net, and frustrating attempt at fixes, I found a work-around. Download the app Bluetooth Keyboard JP, change the settings in settings > Language and Keyboard to that app, then connect the keyboard.
I went from a (max) of 45 seconds connected to not getting disconnected after writing a lengthy email, posting to facebook, and letting it sit for 10 minutes. I also didn't get that problem where the keyboard would seem connected, but all of a sudden hit the back button and exit out of the app/screen I was in.
It does have it's issues, though. One being that the faster you type the less responsive it is. I'm a very fast typer and it's hard for me to slow down, but it still was ok. Sometimes it will repeat a keystroke (i.e. we will turn into wwwwwwwwwwwwwwe), and sometimes the special character box will pop up while tying (although I think this, again, had to do with fast typing).
I'm going to try to get in contact with the CM7 devs and see what they think and if there is a fix in the works (or at least point it out to them and tell them about the app). Knowing those guys, they'll probably be able to fix the initial issue and eliminate the other problems with it!
Edit: Oh and with this app I was able to get tab to work on some apps, but not others (seems to work good with mobile websites), the back button works perfectly, as does the home key and search.

I have a different Bluetooth keyboard and it does the exact same thing on my nook, works fine on my desire. So i do believe that it is nook related and not the keyboard.
I posted in the thread below how to get arrow keys working in landscape mode and menu button to function correctly. I attempted to make other keys work as well. See link. Expand the single post to see additional details given by me in the next post.

HowTo: Wake car mounted Nexus 7 from sleep without power button (2002 Mustang)

I have looked high and low for a way to turn on my Nexus7 without using the power button while it is in sleep mode.
The reason is because i am putting my tablet in my 2002 Mustang GT to replace the stock radio. Once installed , the power, and volume buttons are no longer accessible. I have bought an AMP and use the remote volume knob to adjust the volume. Next my issue was getting the tablet to wake from sleep.
After some serious thinking, i have found a way.
This does not require flashing, hacking, taking the tablet apart to rewire ANYTHING.
What i am going to do is connect the charging cord to a secondary cigarette lighter, then plug in a USB adapter.
On the power side of the secondary cigarette lighter connect a toggle switch. (The secondary cigarette lighter will be hidden behind the tablet)
Mount the cool looking toggle switch somewhere in the car where it is easily accessible.
When you want to wake the table, and or charge it, turn on the toggle switch. (This SHOULD work with any tablet)
You may want to download an app to put the tablet to sleep for when getting out of your car.
If anyone else tries this please let me know how it worked out for you.
LOL
A great solution to a unique problem.
Let's see pics when you are done dash mounting your N7.
I still have to cut out a small piece of the dash to allow room for the charging cable. That will be done tomorrow, along with a better video. I just wanted to show my progress.
Copy and paste link.

Here is another video i made during the day, and after it was all mounted.

Here's a thought, couldn't you just wave a little magnet over the bottom right part of the nexus screen? This should wake it up just as if you were opening a cover.

While that is a good idea, that doesn't help with charging.
I personally would want the battery in the tablet to cycle threw its charges instead of always staying connected. (in case i ever wanted to take the tablet out)

Thanks RoumoredNow. Its still a work in progress.
1. Better mounting of the tablet.
2. Add DC 4 port USB hub.
3. Add front and rear cameras.
4. Add 2 Standard USB connections built into the dash. (for passengers to charge there phone or play threw the audio system)
5. Another AMP
6. Replace the stock 8 speakers.
7. Add Sub-woofer.
8. Anything else i may think of, or suggestions i may like.
This is just an update to anyone wanting to mount there tablet in a mustang.
I have found that a simple piece of plywood does the job well. the area to mount a tablet in a mustang (without cutting up the dash) is about the same thickness as the tablet.
So using a piece of plywood, you can screw it to the BACKSIDE of the stereo mounting bracket. A couple of pieces of Velcro added to the plywood and tablet will keep it centered and in place while putting the radio bezel back on.
The Velcro also added cushion and a space filler to snug the tablet up to the radio bezel.
See images.
Just remember that baking a tablet in a car all of the time _will_ destroy the battery, and rather fast. Maybe that's fine. Just warning you.
As for turning the device off. If you have bluetooth in the car or something, you could use Tasker to watch for the BT device. When it goes away, start a timer, maybe 30 minutes or something, then shut down. That way quick runs into the store or it's not powered off/rebooting etc. There are many posts on this exact same subject in this exact sub-forum... Nexus 7 seems to be popular for cooking in vehicles for some reason.
But yes, the "unplug it from the power" solution is always the solution. Using a "pretty" switch is one way to do it. Some cars have lighter ports which are only powered when the car is powered, but I know mine are hot all of the time and a lot of cars these days are.
Use mKernel and a ROM that supports it and you can use the double tap to wake function, works great on my tablet, just tap the screen twice to wake it up.
U can use timur's kernel, And a otg-y cable, so when power unplug nexus go on stand by, And when plug power nexus start.
That rom is created Just for car installation.

**EDIT: The ebay item i bought below does not fit well in the nexus7.
While it does fit, and does charge, it is loose and sometimes gives a bad connection then disables charging. I suggest to NOT buy it for a nexus7.
I just wanted to update that i have got my OTG cable for my nexus7 (2012) and it works great with timur's rom. Here is a link to the 1 i bought from a USA seller.
I have used a 16gig USB stick with it for testing till i get a larger 1.

A couple of things i wanted to point out about having a toggle switch connected to wake my tablet.
PROS:
1st. This will allow you to charge the tablet when your not in your car.
2nd. Your car does NOT have to be running or in accessory mode to charge your tablet.
3rd. Depending on how you wire your amp, you can still listen to music on your tablet when the accessory is off.
4th. You can still use ftp, AirDroid, ES File Explorer, ect.. (As im typing this, i'm transferring over 600 songs to my tablet in the car.)
CONS:
1st. Tablet does not wake when switch is moved to accessory mode. (toggle switch must be pressed)
There may be more cons, but i haven't found any related to my setup yet.
I'll add to this as i run across PROS and CONS.

I have 2 nexus7 (2012) models. My first one, i had timurs USB ROM for Nexus 7
I never could get it to fast charge even when fast charging was turned on. i was backing up my music and the rom went into a boot loop while it was backing up. So i tried to clear the cache and that didn't help. i then tried to revert back to factory (4.4.4) and i bricked it. It was hung at writing the bootloader. So i left it all nite while i went to bed and the battery died.
My 2nd tablet i left stock (i haven't even tried rooting it yet).
